Please show up to support Black Radio!!

TO MY RADIO ONE FAMILY:

The Honorable John Conyers, our 80 year old African-American Congressman is the sponsor of a new bill that could put many black owned radio stations out of business. And force others to abandon their commitment to provide free music, entertainment, news, information, and money losing formats like gospel and black talk.

This is Cathy Hughes, founder and chairperson of Radio One with an urgent call to our Radio Family.

The John Conyers Performance Tax Bill is the brain child of the foreign owned record industry who would receive at least 50% of the revenue that would be charged to radio stations in order for them to play music. The music that you now receive free from us – we would have to pay millions of dollars for.

And in the midst of this economic depression, black radio stations simply do not have that financial ability.

There has been only one hearing on the bill and that hearing did not have any black ownership representation. Black radio owners and community leaders including Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al Sharpton, Dick Gregory, Tom Joyner, and myself have all begged Conyers to at least allow us the opportunity for a hearing. He has flatly refused.

We now ask you, our radio family, to assist us in saving the future of black radio. Please call or email or visit the offices of John Conyers today.

His phone numbers are 202-225-5126 and 313-961-5670 and his email address is john.conyers@mail.house.gov

TELL HIM that you oppose this bill that would murder Black owned radio and the free music that you now hear on all free radio stations. In the midst of an American economic recession, it is not the right time to send millions of dollars to foreign owned record companies that don’t even pay taxes like you and me in this country. This bill is not in the interest of Black people! Please help us save Black radio!

WANT TO LEARN MORE? See below why it is IMPERATIVE that we act to save Black radio:

1. The promotional value of free local radio airplay translates into significant revenues for artists and record labels:

  • According to the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), record sales in the United States in 2007 were approximately $10.4 billion;
  • Touring revenue in 2007 in the U.S. was approximately $5 billion;
  • The above figures exclude the several billion dollars derived annually from merchandise, songwriting royalties and licensing deals for commercials, films, etc.; and
  • Also excluded is the boost that U.S. popularity provides for foreign sales and concerts.

2. Local radio also actively promotes artists by:

  • Devoting considerable and valuable airtime to promoting artists’ concerts;
  • Featuring artist weekends
  • Providing opportunities for live in-studio performances; and
  • Creating buzz through on-air ticket and album giveaways, helping to drive concert and merchandising revenue.

Without doubt, the engine driving these billions of dollars into the pockets of the record labels and artists is free, local radio promotion.

Artist Examples of Increased Sales From Local Radio Airplay

Each of the next graphs details and compares the spins on over-the-air radio (highlighted in red on each graph) with the retail sales and downloads of the artists’ releases (highlighted in blue on each graph). The results are consistent in every artist example: Significant play on radio results in significant sales of the artist’s song, demonstrating the significant promotional and economic impact that free, local radio provides to the recording industry.

The recording industry suggests that the Internet and viral marketing is now the way to break a new artist.  However, despite numerous new methods for artists to showcase their music, such as MySpace.com, retail outlets, etc., radio’s promotional value in spiking and sustaining sales is clearly demonstrated by the information included below.

Kanye West

Kanye West is an American record producer and is a multiple Grammy Award-winning rapper and singer who rose to fame in the mid 2000s.

Albums

He released his debut album “The College Dropout” in 2004, his second album “Late Registration” in 2005 and his third album “Graduation” in 2007. His first three albums have received numerous awards (including nine Grammys), critical acclaim and commercial success. The first two singles from “Late Registration” sold over 860,000 copies in its first week, and earned him eight Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for the song “Gold Digger.” His first three albums have certified sales of three million, three million and two million copies respectively by the RIAA.

Tours

Kanye West headlined 190 concerts between 2004 and 2007, grossing an average of $244,669 and selling an average of 5,235 tickets per date. (Source: Pollstar Artist Profile Report, © 2007)

50 Cent

The lead single from “Get Rich or Die Tryin’,” “In da Club,” which The Source noted for its “blaring horns, funky organs, guitar riffs and sparse hand claps” broke a Billboard record as the most listened-to song in radio history within a week.

Tours

50 Cent headlined 199 concerts worldwide between 2002 and 2007, grossing an average of $632,272 and selling an average of 11,406 tickets per date between 2005 and 2007. (Source: Pollstar Artist Profile Report, © 2007)

Don’t think for a second that Conyers is pulling the strings on this. I knew of this for over a year now working for a research company. It’s going down whether we like it or not.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Genius_Alley/ Genius_Alley

This problem with this bill and along with the Senate version is it attempts to place the responsibility of paying performers on broadcasters instead of where it rightfully belongs. Record companies have consistently locked out performers that do not write lyrics or compose music from being justly paid. While the true aim of this bill might be admirable, this is not the right to go about it.

This is not a bill that would simply put money in the pockets of foreign owned record companies.

Characterizing this bill as one that would devastate black radio alone is not correct. This bill if passed would have consequences for any small stations that air popular music.

This bill should be opposed but not for the reasons stated in this article.

WOW NOW THAT IS FUNNY CAUSE HIS WIFE IS MUCKING UP THE CITY COUNCIL IN DETROIT. MAYBE HE NEEDS TO RETIRE BECAUSE HE IS LOSING IT. BUT AS FAR AS THE RADIO STATIONS PAYING I DONT CARE THEY NEED TO PAY FOR THE TRASH THEY PLAY! I DONT EVEN LISTEN TO THE RADIO TOO MANY COMMERCIALS.

Yes and no…What you DJ and whats popular in on the radios doesn’t interpet that there isn’t good radio out there…maybe you just dont listen to it….and maybe because it’s so unpopular to listen to good music it’s being slowly put to the back burner. But at the end of the day this is a complicated issue and it cant be looked at from jus one angle…If black owned radio stations lose control of the their stationS you’ll see more of THE one genre sound being imulated on the radio stations…I agree that music is starting to sound the same, but at the samte time we cant forget that music is going to change with the times…Money making corporations white and black only see green…wether the money is coming from the u.s or foriegn nations…We all have to wake up and take control of our lives and what goes on around us…ITS NOT COOL TO HEAR HOW YOUR GONA SMACK SUMBODYS MOTHER UP OR SHOOT EM UP BECAUSE YOU DONT KNOW ANY BETTA GIVE ME A FU$#KN BREAK…I REMEBER THE 90S RNB N I MISS IT,BUT Its a good thing to bring genres together it opens peoples mind up to diffrenet cultures….But when we all become apart of the machine and act like we’re robots with no diversity and intellect it goes too far…lets wake up and start a change in the music industry OBAMA CANT DO IT ALL ON HIS OWN…TAKE CARE YA’LL

It’s amazing how all of a sudden, things are changing they way they are. I mean, we are witnessing things that our eyes have not seen, nor ears have heard before. For instance, “the first black President, the big 3 facing bankruptcy, black folks not having urban radio.” This is just the tip of the iceberg. According to Biblical prophecies, we haven’t seen anything yet. Change is imminent and we are definitely living in the last days. People, wake up because it’s way deeper than what we think it is. Get to know the Jesus before it’s too late!

Let em’ sink! Mainstream radio sucks! It’s one sided and ruled by “Payola”!
I’ll support black radio when they start spinning all the music from conscience music with thought content to thug music choked full of non-sense! Give the people some balance!

this message has been brought to you by sneaky snaks! The salted unsalted snak treat!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/testpageBP/ testpageBP

you mean Mr. Obama didn’t set aside money from the $800 Billion stimulus package to keep independent black radio stations a float in this tough time?! I guess then he would have had to have someone cut out those AIG Bonuses loopholes. lol

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/RayBuckFifty/ RayBuckFifty

If you look at the graphs u can argue that when sales go up, people are calling in more to hear the songs so airpllay goes up, or that the stations look at the sales figures and determine their playlists based on it. Not everything that hurts a rich black woman like Ms Hughes is against us black people, maybe its just against RICH station owners that have been getting free music.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Kissmylyrics/ Kissmylyrics

I will definitely have to research the specific contents of the John Conyers Bill before I make any moves because to my knowledge radio stations have to pay for a license to use the music already, and that is one way the artist receives the royalties.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lauren-TRUE/ lauren-TRUE

I agree with Yorhinas, but at the same time I say let all those artist and big radio station owners do whatever they need to in order to save it. After all we aren’t making Jack butt s**te from any of it. With this recession I can’t afford to buy a radio anyway!

He’s 80 why is he still serving in congress?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ebonyblazer251/ ebonyblazer251

I’m not necessarily in favor of the performance royalty (as it’s NOT a government collected ‘tax’ as this press release likes to tall it). However, I find it a little disingenuous that Radio One/Interactive One, the same corporation that owns many urban radio stations (and BlackPlanet itself), is only telling one side of the story.

Radio One’s problems are much bigger than any performance royalty they’d have to pay for music on their radio stations–the company is losing money and having a harder time managing corporate debt obligations. The performance royalty would mostly hurt small business station owners, and Radio One is far from a small business. They have no business crying poverty. If Radio One fails, it won’t be because of the performance royalties they might have to pay.

Just like the larger Clear Channel, Citadel, C**ulus, and CBS Radio outfits, Radio One wants to protect its old business model and nothing else. Just like those big boys, they’ve slashed operating costs with satellite programming and tight playlists to minimize salaried employees. They’ve adjusted before, and they can do it again.

For that matter, Radio One and the other companies can choose to limit the corporate label music it plays, and sign deals with indie labels and indie artists and sign separate contracts to feature their music. The radio folks only have to pay the royalties for music they want to feature. Considering the legal and illegal payola the corporate radio industry has taken for giving songs hundreds of ‘spins’, perhaps they’ll choose popularity, value, AND quality when deciding what to play.

Maybe when The Power (part of the Radio One family) bring back radio personalities like Mark Thompson, or Ambrose Lane, or Geoge Wilson, I might think about saving Black Radio. But when there are shows like The Two Stews, why bother?

Who listens to the radio any more? I am tired of hearing the same songs 3 times each hour and the same “artists”: chickenheads who think they can sing over a remixed old school track (that don’t even sound as good as the original), and country people who, in my opinion destroy whatever was good about rap music…. I’ll pass! And I will say good riddance.

The Black Artists Who R Supported By The Communities And Fans Don’t Contribute Anything To Improve The Conditions Of The Inner Communities…Kill Rap…Uplift Underground…For At Least Underground Provides Some Form Of Positive Motivation For The Mind. And This Is What The Real Deal Is. Why Should We Continue To Support An Entity That Does Not Support Us? Isn’t This A Principle Behind Us Having The First Black American President Of The United States? Let’s Change The Music As Well. OKAY! here is my take on this!!!
I am from D.C. where Mrs. Hughes started with WOL..and in my eyes that is great! But when artist can actually get paid for spins over seas and not in the USA, there is a problem..Yea its creating a “buzz” but for artist where is the pay?? Radio One for years plays the same thing over and over again…and some of these radio one dj’s take payola to play certain artist. Radio will never be the same point blank period! Record companies are so worried about the next Soulja boy or whats the next trend! Crazy in my eyes.. lets take radio back to when we actually had a choice of what we want to listen too.. Now I am not downing black radio..its needed! But please give the actual listener a change to hear what he or she wants to really listen too….I would rather pay for my radio and listen to sirius radio.. Radio One has almost came under the same umbrella as Viacom and others…So lets think about this really before we call or do something.

‘(1) Except in the case of a transmission to which paragraph (5) applies or a transmission licensed under a statutory license in accordance with subsection (f) of this section, the following shall apply:

‘(A) A featured recording artist who performs on a sound recording that has been licensed for public performance by means of a digital audio transmission shall be entitled to receive payments from the copyright owner of the sound recording in accordance with the terms of the artist’s contract.

‘(B)(i) In a case in which the copyright owner of a sound recording has licensed the sound recording for the public performance of the sound recording by means of a digital audio transmission, the copyright owner shall deposit 1 percent of the receipts from the license with the American Federation of Musicians and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists Intellectual Property Rights Distribution Fund (or any successor entity) (in this subparagraph referred to as the ‘Fund’) to be distributed to nonfeatured performers who have performed on sound recordings. The sound recording copyright owner shall make such deposits for receipts received during the first half of a calendar year by August 15 and for receipts received during the second half of a calendar year by February 15 of the following calendar year.

‘(ii) A sound recording copyright owner shall include with deposits under clause (i) information regarding the amount of such deposits attributable to each licensee and, subject to obtaining consent, if necessary, from such licensee, for each sound recording performed by means of a digital audio transmission by such licensee during the applicable time period, and to the extent included in the accounting reports provided by the licensee to the sound recording copyright owner–

    ‘(I) the identity of the artist;

    ‘(II) the International Standard Recording Code of the sound recording;

    ‘(III) the title of the sound recording;

‘(IV) the number of times the sound recording was transmitted; and

‘(V) the total amount of receipts collected from that licensee.

‘(iii) The Fund shall make the distributions described in clause (i) as follows: 50 percent shall be paid to nonfeatured musicians (whether or not members of the American Federation of Musicians) and 50 percent shall be paid to nonfeatured vocalists (whether or not members of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). The Fund may, prior to making such distributions, deduct the reasonable costs related to making such distributions.

‘(iv) The sound recording copyright owner shall not be required to provide any additional information to the Fund other than what is required under this subparagraph. Sound recording copyright owners shall use reasonable good faith efforts to include in all relevant licenses a requirement to report the information identified in subclauses (I) through (V) of clause (ii). Amounts required under clause (i) that are not paid by the date specified in such clause shall be subject to interest at the rate of 6 percent per annum for each day of nonpayment after the date the payment was due.’; and

    (2) by adding at the end the following new paragraph:

‘(5) Notwithstanding paragraph (1), to the extent that a license granted by the copyright owner of a sound recording to a terrestrial broadcast station extends to such station’s nonsubscription broadcast transmissions otherwise licensable under a statutory license in accordance with subsection (f), the station shall pay to the agent designated to distribute statutory licensing receipts from the licensing of transmissions in accordance with subsection (f), 50 percent of the total royalties that the station is required to pay for such transmissions under the applicable license agreement. That agent shall distribute such payments in proportion to the distributions provided in subparagraphs (B) through (D) of paragraph (2), and such payments shall be the sole payments to which featured and nonfeatured artists are entitled by virtue of such transmissions under the direct license with that station.’.

The biggest issue I have with “blanket” radio is it steals the character out of each region. I’ve lived all over this country and even though I don’t care for a lot of the music say the South or the West has to offer that’s what they have created and that’s what defines their experiences. If I move to NY I don’t want eh same musical expressions they have in the West. Keep our local stations alive and WE have to demand QUALITY out of them. Not just the music they play but involvement they have in our communities. This also applies to our artists, film makers, politicians, and TV producers. cause ALL I see is HOT GARBAGE and I’m ASHAMED.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/djkeyth3tymez/ djkeyth3tymez

Honesty, Black Radio has gone downhill over the years. The same music goes in rotation every hour. You have to pay the radio djs and personalities to play music. Honestly I think the broadcasting indusrty needs to be tore down and reconstructed. I live in the South, but damn it , Im tired of this “dance, crank that, everybody has a 2step to their song music”. Even though I am a dj in the south, I like real music. I remember the old WuTang Clan, Common Sense, Talib & Mos Def Rawkus days. The music now is pointless. When industry falls and the demand for this “so called” music isnt there anymore, we will see what happens. I mean Black owned stations in radio and television have went totally off the radar for offereing quality programming. I mean hear more gossip on the airways more than hearing anything positive. So maybe the passing of this bill will open eyes to do some self evaluations about what “Black” radio has to offer because its not much.

Damn that sucks getting rid of black radio stations now. YOU PEOPLE DO KNOW WHEN THEY GET RID OF THESE BLACK RADIO STATIONS YOU KNOW WHOS GONNA CONTROL THE MEDIA AIRWAYS NOW!! they ll have even more control over us.

Regardless, we have given up so many things instead of working to make them better. The end results other races pick them up and get rich off of them. Think about this, not all of us can afford to pay to listen to music. I agree they do need to improve, but please do not vote to get rid of them, please call or do something.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/smack_u_silly/ smack_u_silly

    1) don’t listen to the radio unless i’m in a car; i don’t own a car;

    2) black radio station owners have to compete for listeners just like everybody else; them being ‘not able to afford’ the new costs ain’t my problem.

that’s why they call business owners ‘entrepreneurs’…’risk takers’.

them’s the breaks…either roll with the punches, or go out of business.

Frankly speaking! i’ve been a musician/song writer/artist/E.t.c. faithfully for twenty years, with lovely inspiring R&b music to offer, watching acts over & over again, born wet behind the ears’ moving ahead of me, being bucked by radio stations, & to this day have quality hit recordings they choose not to vet.
While i symphathize with the situation, from a muscian’s standpoint it’s hard for me to support a cause that have constantly turned it’s back on viable artist’s such as myself.
Sure 50 cent, Little wayne & the rest have gotten rich! but what about the rest of us who’ve sweated blood & tears to be recognized to no avail.
I understand it’s mainly radio owners & programmers who call play shots! but i also understand that radio jocks never do nearly enough!! to gain the ears of these sources to say, look! support all artist’s major or independent!
I mean really! if it’s about uplifting blacks & enriching our communities, stations & jocks might want to change their “repetional song formats plays” to include all quality artist to make money to send back into our communities for growth & stop playing the same redundant music that raise our kids on a lot of levels to what it seems like retardation.
In the past twenty years or so, had they supported all independents, the world in which we now live no doubt would have better meaning.
Instead the jocks tend to jock! the few at the top who constantly flaunt crazy music that kill off our folks, in turn causing a lot of dedicated muscian’s who’ve sacrificed a lifetime to go unheard! many dollars wasted! & not least’ missed opportunities to feed our families! because of our believed sacrifices that our black radio communities would have our backs, & don’t tell me it’s because the music & artist’s aren’t good enough! I hear & see ten’s of artist per month five times better then what i hear on the radio these days.
I guess the bottom line is, if “Black radio” want our support they need to support us.
You know! people like! my little couzen pookie! my lovely niece ashley! with stars in her eyes to become a artist in the field of music, & many others who have what it takes to be successful. There’s just one entity missing to make dreams come true. Guess who!
I suppose they’ve said Fuc!! us because we’ve only been complaining about hearing the same tired music for what!! Ten! fifthteen years! or more?
Tell you what “Black Radio” all of us have brothers, nephews or someone in the music game & we’re tired of being shuned by the very same people asking for our help..
Support us & we’ll support you!
P.s. Why haven’t you all fought tooth & nail to promote music of substance along side hype music? Don’t you want your sons & daughters growing up to music that gets inside you & grow you like the music of the ninties & back?
If i wasn’t an artist & instead worked for a radio station even if my boss & or bosses were white i would make them see & understand that black quality music needs to be heard to grow our communities.
Jocks! you fail us over & over again! Grow balls! & tell these owners! & such what time it is & what they really need to be doing… After all that’s one of your first gifts..(Personality) use it to influence the higher ups.
Perhaps this is why their trying to do away with black radio!! all the mentions above!
    Ever thought of that?
    Represent! right & fair!

Ms. Hughes can’t get any support from me as she bought and closed the only black radio station in Boston. Left us with no job and no warning. My bad the warning came that Monday at 11:30A.M. that at 4:30P.M. the white rock station would be broadcasting and we were not to interfere with their engineers. Also, [today] was our last day. I don’t see Clearchanel tripping. And I don’t see her posting the HR number of the bill so we can see for ourselves what is going on.

I personally like the radio but I think that Black radio stations should step their game up to more than just local and try getting out around the world to be heard if they want to survive and this goes for country music as well. I personally think they should take over or be in control of 94.1 on Sundays here in Baton Rouge because of the ignorant bulls**t they spew on the airwaves. I think everything should go except the SLIKY SLIM SHOW! My Opinion.

Unfortunately this is a no win situation!! Frist John Conyers is being used by the Caucasian system to destroy the music they have been trying to silence since the dawn of so called “RAP MUSIC” Hip hop has been blamed for so much for so long that now the move is being made to silence the outlet that allows all types of Black music to be heard.

If Rep. John Conyers is in fact sponsering a bill that would truly hurt Black radio stations then either he owes this Caucasian a big favor and now he has to pay up!!!!

Ironic as it seems a few post respondants seems to feel that Black radio has forsaken R&B and soul for nonsence degrading sexually laced filthy music disguised as hip hop. Judging by a fewpost here they feel that Black radio is need of a shake up to wake up!!!! Sadly the loosers are millions of Black people who depend on Black radio to get through their day or night.

For Rep. Conyers to be a Blackman and allow Caucasian people to push him in this direction tells you that something is up with that. does he not know how important Black radio is to the Black community.

On the other hand Black radio has made some enemies from within the Black community because IT HAS ALLOWED COMERICAL SALES TO DICTATE WHAT THEY PLAY AND HOW THEY RELATE TO THE BLACK COMMUNITY.

The Black community has grown a little tired of repetitious BS being played over Black radio airwaves. Thus as a result many Black people could careless what REALLY happens to Black radio at this point.

And this is the critical issue because The Hon. Minister Louis Farrakhan has often said once our people become dissatisfied with something that goes on in our own community it is easier for those who do not have our best interest at heart to do away with something that we may need but out of ignorance no longer wants!!

    Peace

Kill “Black radio”..I cant believe they calling it “Black radio”….Hey Radio one chose to limit themselves over the years and play the same repetitive bulls**t…now they crying wolf?!?! F**k them!!! F**k Radio One and Old Conyers!! The bill will pass regardless then Conyers will die happy in his grave. If “black radio” would give up and coming artist a chance to shine as well when REAL talent needed to be heard, then this is karma for RADIO ONE!…Im puertorican and Im disgusted at all angles of this…Remember “Black Radio”…Latinos were in this just as much as yall were when the music for the oppressed and the ghetto was being built for this lifestyle back in the 70′s…Sucks that “Black Radio” limited themselves to that instead of reaching all Urban Demographics like The LATINOS AS WELL!!!!!…But again too bad….It was nice knowing you radio one….

Everyone who said Karma was a b***h is right. 99.999999995% of Radio One stations play the same s**t over and over again. And I wouldn’t be the slightest surprised if they(Radio One stations) were getting PAID to PLAY the same s**t over and over again. Radio in general was create as a means for getting new musical talent discovered. In fact, It was THE DJ at the club who influenced people to request songs they heard in the club to be played on the radio. What happened to that? Now it’s the other way around? I remember reading an article not long ago about artists wanting to be paid to get played. So this ain’t new…..Thank God for the internet.

People I am surprised at all of you. Radio has changed from how it was back in the day due to us keeping our mouths shut. This bill is just another way the govermant and those with paper are trying to control us. Instead of complaining about the same songs getting played, and the sh#t that do get played. Speak up. Believe it or not but the only waste is doing nothing. Let’s first voice our opposition to this bill, then lets work on getting the radio back to how it used to be. I know for me I would love if they would start playing the hot stuff they play in the club on the radio. Most up and comers in my area actually debut their music in the club an their is a small segment 1 night a week on 1 station in my area. I would like more.

This is as much deplorable as it is sad…80yrs.old an selling out to the recording industry.I just got off the phone with someone at Rep.Conyers D.C.office who tried to sell me the notion that the idea here is to compensate artists for radio airplay, much in the same manner actors are receive compensation from television re-runs.Be real, that’s not the same medium, not the same dynamic.Firstly, there are X to the tenth power many more radio stations than television stations.Secondly,a four minute radio spin can be “repeated” seven times within the 30 minute slot that an old episode of a sitcom could be aired in.Comparable? Hardly!Thirdly, consider how many aspiring musicians, singers and producers who’d give practicully anything for just ONE radio spin! From 88.1 to 107.9Mhz,FM means FREE MUSIC!!!

It is ashame that there is so much self hatred amongst black people that it is appalling. While some of yall uppity tight azz negreoes are complaining about what the type of music and entertainment that black radio plays but yall fail to realize that it is all about black empowerment especially when we still have a very racist and bias media out there who dont always talk about the injustices that black people have gone through by the system but let it be some blonde little white girl it would be on every station. And yet some of these tight azz uppity negroes are out here dissing black radio and dont get me wrong Im not a big fan of some of the rap music they put out today but you have to look at it for some young black males it is a way out of poverty because everybody dont have the smarts for college . Those who claims that rap is not a form of music are the ones who hate it the most but fail to remember back in the days when rap first took off the country was fealing the same way about rap until they found out that it was white kids that was buying all the rap music and industry was making huge propfits in sales from those white kids. For some of yall who are old enough to remember the pre B.E.T. days when you had no choice but to watch MTV with their VanHalen or Twisted Sister videos should how how it would be not to have entertainment that you cant relate to because in those days they didnt play hardly any black music. I think this Conyers guy is a prime example of self hatred black culture and music when you are in position of power and you forget where you come from and chose to bring your own people way of life down instead of uplifting the your people.

It is crazy situation overall. The ‘small’ black radio stations will probably suffer the most – sign off altogether. The corporate stations may not be affected to that extent. They talk about “black radio” – what about the ‘white owned’ stations….they listen to Kanye, 50, TI, Kirk Franklin & Mary Mary too.

On one hand I think this is a smoke-screen. I believe that there was a spark, an interest in politics/media/journalism and this is a way of deterring upcoming young afro-americans political science majors, community leaders and activists [who use radio to discuss issues facing their communities and providing political analysis]. I’m not all that familiar with political analysts, I know there are hundreds of afro-american broadcasters giving insight, opinion on today’s politics, but none are receiving the viewer/listenership as white broadcasters. I see are Hannity/Colmes, Keith Olberman, etc.

On the other hand, it’s a little difficult to show support for ‘black radio’ in this
situation. In the Philadelphia radio market Radio One launched Praise 103.9FM
on Feb 27, 2005. I had spent seven years as music director. In 2004, I had been
out of work and was looking to get back in to radio. I was interested in employment
as on air announcer, submitted resume after resume and did not receive a phone call nor
interview. There are too many ill-facts and two-sided stories to mention here and
I’ll leave it at that. Simply put, ‘black radio’ did not employ me. I was qualified
for the job. Thank God I was able to find employment elsewhere, music and
broadcasting are my 2 passions – I’m gifted in those fields, unfortunately I worked
    type of jobs.

Whatever happens, we’ll have to accept what God allows and if granted a ‘next time’
We’ll have our stuff together and be prepared and better organized – stop showboating and handle business the right way!

Alright my people, listen up. I understand everyone’s criticisms as well as some of the anger but, if you are so upset with the way that “black radio” presents itself, then why would you allow your comments about it sound like the music that you hate to hear come from it? You might not like who “black radio” has become, but I have yet to hear anyone explain anything they have done to help change it’s format for the better. Has anyone sent a letter or called anyone? Has anyone banded together to form a protest? Just wondering. I know that there are a number of talented artists out there that deserve a chance to be heard… through RADIO! Radio is an engine for artists to promote themselves. People, understand that if “black radio” is taken away, you are taking away another opportunity for great artists to express themselves and show who they really are. Understand that this is something that we need. I hear black people complain all the time that no one hears them and no one gives them a chance to speak. This is our chance to be heard… this is our chance to speak. If this is taken away, we will regret not fighting for it. Yes… a lot could be changed about the format, but fight for it first and then change it. Don’t lose it and not be able to have a voice. A crowd can’t hear you without a microphone. Why are black people so ready to give up? We complain and give up. We talk trash and do nothing. We hate on each other and fight each other. What happened to fighting for a cause? We all know we don’t prefer the music that is played, but we all know the bottom line is that it is necessary for us to have a voice. FIGHT FOR THE VOICE!!! Fight for the voice and then fight for the music.
If it’s gone…. then so are we.

We must take control of our Economic Voice by spending our money with black owned businesses. We as a people spend more in the United States than any other race of people 97% of it goes to other cultures besides the Black Race. We spent $965,000,000.00 Thats Billions with a capital B.-Last year alone. By the year of 2012 we are projected to spend 1.1 trillion dollars according to the Sacramento Observer researched by the Selig Center For Economic Growth. This is not a call to for a racial divide, anyone that thinks that this is my objective, will be sadly mistaken. Blacks in this Country is given a very negative image same as the poor whites. Black Radio can not only be saved by Black People we can become a media magnet.

After reading the racist / negative generalizations and stereotypes Eminem wrote about black women, now; I change the radio to a different station every time I hear one of his songs.

Each and every black Woman and Man needs to copy and paste this link into their web browsers and sign this petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/ebony/petition.html ; to put a stop to this, since Eminem seems to think that there are not enough black women to hurt his career. He stated that he has never dated or respected a black woman but he has had sex with one.

“Petition Against Eminem for His Racist Comments Against Black Women”

    To: Interscope Records

As young African American women and hip hop aficionados, we would like to take the time to express our outrage against rapper Eminem (aka Marshall Mathers) for his racist, slanderous statements and sweeping generalizations against Black women on a recently surfaced audio recording that he has admitted to making. The opinions expressed by Eminem on the said tape are vile, unfounded and especially shocking coming from a man who has built his fortune by imitating an art form that was created by and has been traditionally dominated by African Americans.

    As Mr. Mathers eloquently states:

“All the girls I like to bone have big butts/ No they don’t, ’cause I don’t like that n—– sh–/ I’m just here to make a bigger hit.”

    And even more profound:

“Blacks and whites, they sometimes mix/ But black girls only want your money, ’cause they’re dumb chicks…Never date a black girl, because blacks only want your money/ And that sh– ain’t funny.”

Eminem goes on to describe in detail why he firmly believes that white women are superior to black women.

His response to the resurgence of this ten-year old tape has been hurried and haphazard:

“The tape they played today was something I made out of anger, stupidity and frustration when I was a teenager. I’d just broken up with my girlfriend, who was African-American…”

I ask you, would it be acceptable for an African American man to make the same sweeping statements against Caucasian women? I happen to believe that if this were the case, his career would be over.

Unfortunately, this issue is larger than just Eminem. Although we recognize his blatantly racist lyrics, we must also address the numerous hip-hop artists who feel the need to degrade women, Black women in particular, as well as degrade themselves and our community as a whole by their incessant use of the terms ‘n****r’, ‘b***h, ‘hoe’ and the likes:

WE WILL NO LONGER SUPPORT ARTISTS WHO PROMOTE STEREOTYPICALLY DEMEANING IMAGES OF BLACK WOMEN.

WE WILL NO LONGER PURCHASE MUSIC THAT CATEGORICALLY INSULTS US.

WE WILL BOYCOTT EMINEM AND ANY OTHER ARTIST WHO MALIGNS, DEBASES, AND OTHERWISE DISRESPECTS BLACK WOMEN.

In the great tradition of our ancestors who began the Birmingham bus boycott, we will not financially patronize or support any entity that discriminates against us and/or disrespects our people.

It is interesting to note that Eminem has stated that the tape was brought to light because of the Source Magazine co-owner Ray Benzino’s long-standing ‘vendetta’ against him. I urge you not to let that be a deterrent to the real issue at hand: Eminem’s blatantly racist comments specifically directed toward Black women. We should never lose sight of this. We should never forget. We should not allow this man to come out of this unscathed. Let this be our wake-up call. Regardless of the reasons behind why this tape has been presented to the public, we now must face the fact that we have before us a recording artist, an entrepreneur, a film star, and to some even a role model, who at one point believed, and quite possibly still does…that he: “don’t like that n—– s—t”.

    Sincerely,
