I was watching MSNBC when he made the statement.All he was saying was during the time the president was speaking, it didn’t come to mind that this was a black man speaking, he was seen simply as THE PRESIDENT. In other words, for about 70 minutes President Obama was not seen through the lens of race.

After listening to Chris Matthews statements I don’t believe that they were racist at all. I think that he’s stating that this is a historic moment in time, when a black man can stand in front of some of the most powerful people in the world who just so happen to be white, tell them “this is how we need to run our country” and not be viewed as “just another black man.” Chris Matthews is a cool cat and I really don’t think that he meant any harm. I think that he is just as amazed as a lot of black people are that a black man is running a country that has a long history of racism, racial injustice, racial profiling and so many other racial issues.

My pastor is a black man and he brought up a very good point, If he lives his life focused on being black then becomes an expert at “Black issues” and finds excuses on why he cannot relate to other people or why he cannot do something. Barrack Obama obviously didn’t live his life according to race and he can relate to just about everyone. Actually I look at Chris Matthews Hardball at least 3-4 nights a week and this man doesn’t have a suspect (racial) bone in his body. I heard exactly when he said this and didn’t think much of it, it was kind of like a compliment to Obama. This isn’t racist! When you look at someone who is not your race, you identify them by their race. Every race does it, when someone isn’t the same race as them, even if they don’t say it out loud, they think it. But what he is saying is that Obama crossed the colorline last night and captivated the audience and therefore, he was no longer identifying him by his race, but by what he was saying. You have to interpret these things right b/c one person will get the wrong idea and scream RACISM… kind of like with this article. It’s not that he was talking so eloquently that he didn’t sound Black, it’s that he grasped the audience & they no longer payed attention to his race, but to what he was saying.

My question for him is this: How does a black person sound like and how does Obama sound? To me Obama sounds like a professional who speaks proper English and is eloquent. Black people or people of any other race can speak proper and improper English. So Mr. Matthews how do Black people sound and why is it necessary for you to even bring all this up. I mean Obama’s speech was about so many other important things and that’s the point you bring up?

For folks who watched Obama’s speech, you may remember an excerpt Obama in which he chided those politicians who “play it safe” for their own short-term interests and ambitions instead of heeding what’s over the horizon with a “hands-on” approach.

Matthews – regardless of his partisanship – is older and white which automatically leaves open to intense scrutiny anything he has to say about race. The old ghosts are always there. He could very well be an “old dog trying to learn new tricks” – attempting to break out of a life-long cultural conditioning. It is tempting to take his words out of context if you don’t read the actual quote, and attribute his statement to stereotypical white amazement about Obama’s intelligence, articulation, etc. Discerning readers will of course have also noted his reasoning: “It was so broad-ranging, so in tune with so many problems, of aspects, and aspects of American life that you don’t think in terms of the old tribalism, the old ethnicity”. More striking however was this quote: “It’s so hard to talk about. Maybe I shouldn’t talk about it, but I am. I thought it was profound that way.”. I don’t watch Hardball, but that quote definitely doesn’t sound very “hardball” to me. If anything it rings with a very inspired degree of humility.

I’m not one to speak for anyone else’s personal experiences or opinions with race, but to extrapolate on Obama’s vicarious plea to the GOP (rhyme unintended) – Matthews appears to be speaking plainly to the public. He is laying aside his network rating concerns [personal ambitions] and speaking very plainly to everyone about how he actually feels about the race issue [attacking it hands-on].

This is extremely refreshing next to the usual rancourous ignorance, envy, resentment, fear, etc which routinely drifts from the Christian Neo-Conservative media, AIPAC, and the other less-represented fumble-tongued bigots. Matthews also did it without being politically correct. I think that he is speaking in terms of the idea that for just an hour, there was a man who happens to be President of the United States, speaking to a room full of people who just happen to be Americans. I loved Chris Matthew’s statements on Obama and I agreed with them. Basically he was saying that he was witnessing history right before his eyes and that even he had to take a step back and let it sink in. Yo, i swear, sometimes we as a people really take s*** too far. The man got on T.V. and said something that hardcore white racists would hang him for, and now Media One is trying to start a controversy with it. No that wasn’t racist. That was the closest thing to a compliment that i heard in a long while from a white person publicly about the black community. This is just as bad as when everyone tried to get Resident Evil 5 pulled off the shelves cause the zombies were black. What about the first 6 games where all the zombies were white and Spanish. I’m not naive enough to say racism doesn’t exist anymore, but i sure as hell am not trying to fuel the fire when something is blatantly not racist.

There is nothing wrong with his comments. If Chris meant it then it is a good thing that he saw Obama as his president and not a black president. The man has become president at during one of America’s darkest hours, it wont take long before the world starts to blame him for all their problems, but he has done a good job. Too bad MA. senate race killed health care, but Obama will make his mark on the presidency and our nation. He is too arrogant not to.

I’m with you Frantz851, to say that he was looking at the Man and not the pigment of his skin is really saying something that is not racial. I’m tired of people saying that Obama is not doing his job, there is no way unless he was god himself to be able to fix everything that was broken over an 8 year period of time, for one, if Obama had not come into office, we would have kept spiraling down into another Great Depression, he was able to put a halt on alot of things in order to keep our economy from getting worse, no it is not where we want it to be now, but by now if he didn’t come in and handle things the way he did, we would be waaaaaaay worse off, second of all, he has been goin in on the health issues that we were allll concerned about during the Bush years, and the national security which we were allll concerned about during the Bush years, and Obama may be our Cheif Executive, but if he doesn’t have the back up that he needs, he can’t make things happen on his own, he still has people he needs to answer to and get on his side, and the republicans have been trying everything they can to make sure that Obama is not succesful during his term. If we all start doubting our votes for him and stop believing in him now, then we are just like those republicans who are trying to keep him down.

The problem with blacks in particular is, they have been conditioned to believe that everything that is racist is also mean spirited or hateful. We realize he didn’t mean to be mean spirited, but listen to what those words really imply. He forgot he was a black man? How is that? Because 99.9% of the Blacks you see on TV are either dribbling a basketball, running with a football, singing, dancing or doing the perp walk. The underlying message he is saying is, he doesn’t usually associate intelligence and articulation with Black men, so for a fleeting moment, he didn’t even see a “black man” or his vision of one. This is nothing new, these types have always been separated from the community at large and made to feel special and somewhat superior to the others.

Why can’t we just see something for what it is and not add to it!!! This is ridiculous and honestly very annoying…

Wait a dam minute, let me put my 2 cents up in here. First of all, Obama is the most articulate president the U.S. has ever seen so it’s no surprise that some folk to forget he’s black. Remember this same thing happened with Colin Powell. Second of all, Obama can’t just wave his hand and make all his promises take shape. Stop blaming him for the people who lost jobs, homes, etc. He tries reaching out to republicans but they spit in his face. His most difficult challenge is getting republicans to come on board, but they fight him tooth and nail because they don’t want him taking credit for fixing the mess they’re hero George W. created such as the 13 trillion dollar deficit.

As for Chris Matthews, he’s very intelligent and well spoken re: politics and often praises Obama’s accomplishments which is more than any republican has done to date. What’s more alarming is to see Dems adopting the mindset of conservatives and jumping on the “bash Obama” band wagon. If we had another conservative administration right now, all you Judas Iscariot democrats would really have something to complain about. Obama tries to avoid signing Executive Orders so as not to look like the dictator that just left the oval office. However, just recently the five conservative Supreme Court justices just gave corporations (even foreign ones) the right to influence the outcome of U.S. elections by putting gobs of money into the hands of crooked politicians. Now Obama has to try and undo what our crooked conservative side of the Supreme Court just did.

Anybody claiming to be a Democrat needs to know the difference between the two parties as stated: The Democrats want to give money to people who need it, while the Republicans want to give money to people who don’t. Every time one dem bashes Obama, it makes it that much more difficult for all other dems to get things accomplished. So all you dems running around whining about what Obama has not done need to shut up and take a good look at your options because the fact is with a conservative admin running things you don’t have any options. Loyal and intelligent dems have worked too hard to have simple minded dems trying to crash our party. If your not happy with how Obama is trying to handle things then take your happy A** over to the other side so they can screw you without the vaseline, and don’t come running back to us complaining about how the republicans dissed your sorry butts. It was Martin Luther King Jr. who said “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character”. And, now when we have an instance when a “black person” is not looked at as being a “black person”, but just a “person” now we have a problem! Now I watch Chris Matthews frequently, and I know for a fact that he is NOT a racist person. Him saying that he forgot that President Obama was African American is no insult at all, and shame on those people that look at it as such. Why does everything have to be so black, and white with us? We are all PEOPLE and it shouldn’t matter if were black or white! And, to you people who are blaming the President for “YOUR” financial woes, GET A DAMN GRIP! You were broke before he became President! The man has been in office for A YEAR! So stop blaming everybody else for the wrong choices that YOU made, and be accountable for your own actions! I think Matthews was saying Obama sounded like every other white politicians, saying what he thinks people want to hear with no clear delineated plan on bringing it about. The last time I heard that line, it was supposed to be compliment, before it crashed and burned{lol:} It was used to persuade a crossing of the cultural divide for reasons being mostly benifiting the other person. Everybody who’s dated cross cultures will have heard this line before. Why is this supposed to be a compliment?

He meant it as he explained it and you did it too, or said the same things before. You want to see Obama not as that black guy who is different, and it’s rare that a black can make it, you want to see him without a label, just his title- PRESIDENT. You don’t want to say “oh that’s the black president”. So while so many are focused on race, he’s saying race is the last thing on his mind. Coming from a white man, it sounds bad, but I understood the intention when he first said it. He’s a white man who can look past race is all and doesn’t need to go by the white people propaganda that is shoved in his face about blacks. He can turn that off is all he’s saying.

I have an X who’s mother feel’s the same WAY with her 3 Colored Son’s & she wishes they were all born to be WHITE MEN & Won’t accept Any Thing and/or Any Body Less than A WHITE WOMEN FOR ALL 3 OF THEM! Have you ever heard someone say, “wow, I forgot he was white for an hour” If you have, the white person was probably speaking slang, wearing his hat backwards, trying to rap (i.e. Eminem). Why would someone say something like that? well, because it breaks the mold of what you’re used to seeing. If you saw Kobe Bryant out somewhere break dancing on a box on a corner, you wouldn’t say “wow, I forgot Kobe was black”, but if you saw Kobe speaking to a group of engineers, or to a group of mathematicians, and speaking intelligently and articulately, you just might. What the hell is post racial mean anyway? Try to keep up silky, it’s not that difficult a concept to grasp!

Just to add. To me, this is along the same lines as the Martin Luther Coon comment. It’s about how were perceived. Honestly, it doesn’t bother me. I’m too busy trying to get us to perceive us better, to be worried about how Chris M, Mike Greenberg or the media in general does.

Considering the era that the journalist was born in and the fact that I actually watch him on a regular basis, I feel this was taken way out of proportion. From what I have seen over the past few years CM has always been upfront and had no quams about appologizing for anything that may have offended or misrepresented anyone. He has been fascinated openly with the politics during the elction process and layed all the cards out frankly about who would and would not vote for Obama. He who listens to sound bites without finding out the truth will fall for anything– acting like republicans I think.

He didnt say anything wrong..I understand what he was saying just by reading the comment..everyone is so focused that Obama is black..That we have a black president..but as he stood there and gave the State of the Union address he had no label.. He was not just a BLACK man..he was not just a WHITE man..he is our PRESIDENT. Point blank.
