coach

From CNN:

A high school in Washington, D.C., on Friday named a former women’s professional football player as its head varsity football coach, a move that a national women’s sports advocacy group calls historic.

Natalie Randolph, 29, a science teacher at Calvin Coolidge Senior High School, was introduced as the school’s head football coach Friday in a press conference.

“We needed to find the best leader, role model, coordinator and instructor for our young men,” Coolidge principal Thelma Jarrett said. “Natalie passed our first test — she’s proven herself as a great organizer, a leader who is knowledgeable about the sport as a player and a coach.”

Students and faculty, along with Randolph’s loved ones and former D.C. Diva teammates were on hand for the announcement as Mayor Adrian Fenty decreed March 12, 2010, “Natalie Randolph Day” in Washington.

Women’s rights? Great. But is this really an intelligent and common sense choice? I do not know many coaches who stay away from the locker rooms. They’re in there giving orders, going over plays, and ramping the team up. In fact, my high school coaches had offices right in the Husky Hut, the Varsity Locker Room. In some areas diversity is something that does not need to be overly applied. If you are a woman think of something that you do that you really don’t want a man being there with you. It’s like that. Is it because you hate men? Maybe you do but no it doesn’t. It’s just something that if a man was there staring at you with his hands all over the place you’d be extremely uncomfortable.

@Das_Blaq, so there shouldn’t be any male coaches in the WNBA or any other women’s sports for that matter? What about the UConn coach who has led his ladies to a 70+ game winning streak or the Houston Comets coach who led them to a 4-peat to start of the WNBA’s history. I feel you on the fact that it might make some guys uncomfortable to have a woman in the locker room, but there are obviously ways to deal with that

Oh yeah, congrats to the coach!

If she actually knows the sport then its cool, but I’m not so sure she does. I know she play semi pro ladies ball but I’m wondering if they had simplified plays and game plans. IF that’s the case then she may no know a lot about of ins and outs of play calling and game management.

Factor in the recruiting. although its illegal in HS sports, many high schools talk parents into letting players live with coaches or relatives in other school areas so they can play at certain schools, players might not want to do that for an unknown woman coach.

Then there are also the players. When you play football you get used to the coach being tough, loud and slightly abusive, its the football culture. IDK if players are going to put up with that from a woman who is seen as the weaker sex.

This young lady is extraordinary. Jim Vance, the evening news anchor on WRC NBC4 here in DC said that she spoke to the selection committee about making the experience a memorable one for each player, that academics came first, along with good sportsmanship. She scontinued in that vein for sometime before she ever got down to her football knowledge, Xs and 0s. The chairman of the committee said at a news conference to introduce her, that the committee was hooked before she was five minutes into her presentation, that no other candidate was even close. She’s delightful to hear speak, very engaging, but when she speaks of discipline on the field nd in games, as well as all other parts of the student-athlete’s life, you can hear the snap in her voice and see the steel in her eyes. She said the only thing she was not happy with was coaching against her fiancee who is at another school.
