Old Rape DNA

From CNN:

Bartow, Florida — After more than three decades in prison, a Florida man was set free Thursday after a DNA test showed he did not kidnap and rape a 9-year-old boy in 1974.

“I’m not angry,” James Bain, 54, told reporters after a brief hearing in Bartow, Florida.’

Bain was 19 when he was convicted on charges of kidnapping, burglary and strong-arm rape. He received a life sentence. He’s going home for the first time in 35 years.

“I got God in my head,” said Bain, surrounded by supporters and wearing a T-shirt with “Not Guilty” across the front. “I knew one day he will reveal me.”

Of the 245 people in the United States whom DNA testing has exonerated, none has spent more time behind bars than Bain, according to the Innocence Project, a national organization dedicated to exonerating wrongfully convicted people through such testing.

i used to think the same thing…how can one not be angry after being cleared after serving 20+ yrs. but i figure their happiness outweighs any anger or bitterness; they’re so happy to be able to have a life and be able spend time w/ friends and family that they have no room to waste on negative enrgy. that’s the only way i can rationalize it.

too many of these we hear of. i always wonder how many innocent are there who aren’t as lucky

Man forgive those who do harm to others. This is sad and the worst part about it is that it’s many more out there incarcerated just like him, for no reason. To them dirty crooked a** cops, manipulative prosecutors and heartless judges that incarcerates innocent men like that… judgement day is coming and those badges will be dropping and degrees will not be counted

I don’t know about thaat not angry stuff either. I’d be happy that I was out and able to return to my life some kind of way, but I’d be angry, too. How could you not be angry? I’d be p*ssed! LOL. They all come out saying they weren’t angry. I haven’t heard one yet say they were hurt or something. I’d be talking sh*t as I walked out the door. I need to read this entire story.

Not angry! Going on with their life! Thirty-five years of your life and a person would say they were not angry. I shed a tear for the many that have been wrongfully convicted. Especially being a black man in the U.S, it shows it can happen to any of us. And now that the test for the DNA can be compromised, what do you think will happen. I am so afraid of our law enforcement and justice system it is just sad. Besides money, I really think much more should be done for wrongfully convicted people. Don’t get me wrong, money helps, but what about the life you missed out on. The family you would not ever see again, or watching your children grow up. If you agree, stand up.

Hmmm, you know i bet you he has had PLENTY of time to be angry, knowing what good it would do… being in jail for that long …knowing you are innocent, the next level would be saying to yourself everyday… “Let me out”. more than anything.
Kind of reminds me of “The Count of Monte Cristo”… James Bain IS… the new, Edmon Dantes. The best state apology on his behalf should be paying him a dollar for every hour he had to stay there.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Lucky_Jester777/ Lucky_Jester777

The world has changed 3 times over… what could he possibly do for himself career wise at the age of 54?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NtelligentlyInclined/ NtelligentlyInclined

Hmmm, a dollar for every hour? I’d take that!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MoneyMakerWes/ MoneyMakerWes

this is why unreasonable doubt should not be permitted. He was in jail for nothing… Society stripped this man of his life on earth.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/pionear/ pionear

Well, they said ppl wrongly convicted of crimes recieves $50,000 dollars for every year they have spent in jail. So he should be recieving $1.75 million dollars.

Hell, they need to move that decimal point a few spaces to the right, b/c he should get $175,000,000 million dollars, IMO.
