damn I was feeling that story too. I grew up on that age of Hip Hop and I always feel bad for those artists cause they got nothing while they paved the way for a lot of these youngings who are getting paid.

Roxanne Shante’ (or her management) was an opportunity hound even back in the day. UTFO’s “Roxanne, Roxanne” wasn’t even about Roxanne Shante…hence, the revelation of “The Real Roxanne”. Roxanne Shante insisted THEN that UTFO was talking about her. So, UTFO released “Roxanne’s a Man”.

Evidently, the behavior continues (20 years later) and truth is still a variable for Roxanne Shante’.

200,000 is nothing compared to all of the Money they made off of her.

She had to get something seeing how they robbed her on her contract.

It used to happen to all the artists in the 80s and 90s. Til’ the artists started getting smart.

Happened to TLC who all 3 were sharing a 300,000.00 house after selling millions of records. And barely could pay for that. Ended up loosing the house and going bankrupt.

The didn’t make any money until they got away from the original record label.

Now artists are getting their own record label.

Wow. I already liked Roxanne Shante and was very familiar with her and all the other “Roxannes” that had a rebuttal to UTFO’s Roxanne Roxanne. When my sister and I were kids, we used to try to see which one could keep up with both Roxanne Shante and The Real Roxanne’s versions without messing up. lol good memories…

Anyway, I remember seeing a few Roxanne Shante interviews on BET and VH1. She said she started out doing the rap to UTFO out of resentment for the way the group dissed this Roxanne character in their song. So she did a rap to get back at UTFO. It was recorded, landed in the hands of record executives, the song blew up and the rest was history. In the interview Roxanne Shante said “they” (perhaps meaning the record executives) were so impressed by a 14 year old girl and her lyrical and creative talent that they offered her money for her college education. This was the same story Roxanne Shante spoke about in each show she appeared in before this article came out. Until now I thought this was how she succeeded from ghetto life to scholar life. I really admired her because of that.

I also saw her make appearances on a few shows and events as “Dr.” Roxanne Shante. She walked in that whole character on the BET miniseries Beef and VH1′s Miss Rap Supreme. The whole story is fake? Shocking. Although what I heard is quite different from this article, it’s still a let down to anyone, especially the teens she mentors through her motivational speaking events. You’re teaching the youth how to succeed in something you haven’t truthfully accomplished yourself. Not to throw stones at her, but she could have just came clean with everything from the beginning… at least before she launched any campaign of preaching education, hard work, and success to inner city kids.

However…It’s never too late to practice what you preach, Roxanne Shante. You can still make a move to get a college education on your own. Not only for the sake of the youth you are a role model to, but for the sake of empowering yourself.

Well I remember her raps along with at least two others version of Roxanne, she was known in the rap game back then. She made some dollar$ hopefully from it all. As to her story being a lie, class credits and school transcripts are proof enough.
P.S. It took me 3 attempts to get my A.A.S finally I have it, so to all who are working on get their HS Diploma, Certificate, GED, College Degree, B.of A., MA, P.h d go for it, get yours. There are Pell grants, scholarships, student loans. work study programs availible to achieve your goals. Some are free and can be taken online at the library.

There is something really bizarre about this story. She has been saying she had a PHD in psychology since at least 1996. Now all the sudden in 2009 somebody does a news story about it and it’s immediately disproved by Slate. Why didn’t somebody disprove it the other 750 times she said it. I wonder if she pissed off some influential person and they deliberately brought attention to this old story just to humiliate her. She attended an event at Cornell just last year. Notice how in this link the story was written in november of 2008 and modified september 2009. I wonder if the original story said that Roxanne was a Cornell Alumni.

Doesnt make sense why lie like this? Its just hard to beleive she would make up all this. I mean it does sound strange that all of the sudden this is a lie. She said she was DR. numerous times and told the story about Warner paying for her education and nobody contested it before now.

I find it hard to believe that any record company would promise to pay a gifted 14 year old pioneer rapper’s education for life. The people at Warner had to be ignorant and retarded to put that clause in someone’s recond contract. I believe Roxanne Shante always had a lot of potential. That’s why I was never impressed with the from projects to Phd story!
