the thing about this one is that emts are legally noted not to act on break they would loose there jobs and license. We have to look at this in a odd way what would you do loose your job and license break the law or save the girl me i would save the girl but you cant say the same for everyone

This is a really sad and tragic story. If your trained to assist someone in a life threatening situation why not try to assist. I am glad I am not the EMT’s because this is something they will have to live with for the rest of their lives. It will be on their conscious day and night knowing that they could have saved this woman’s life. Workers inside of the coffee shop said they called 911 and reported the emergency so again why couldn’t they have assisted. I think they should be punished for their behavior. As for the comment about everyone being entitled to a break you are right about that but when your job is to deal with the sick then your job is never ending. I want to hear you say that the next time you enter an ER for example and everyone in the ER is on break an unavailable to assist you or your loved one what would you say then or if you or somene you love is in that same coffee shop having a seizure then what would you say.

Yes, everyone is entitled to a break while they are at work.. BUT
EMTs, POLICE, MILITARY are some what of an exception to this… and its not the same EMTs doing the exact same thing everyday at the same time, with that said. They were already using their break, and I cant see how it would have killed them to buy what they came for and then helped her out instead of leaving the scene… they were already on location they didnt have to leave… they have band radios direct to their dispatcher… they could have easily called their location without using 911…
YES, they have ‘regulations’ not laws they abide by. (LAWS are statues for every citizen, regulations are governed by an institutions.) IF it was REALLY a LAW these services used, then you wouldnt hear about workers getting rewarded for going beyond their office of duty. (lol i said duty!! but seriously…)

That’s like me, as a nurse, passing someone up who is in dire need of assistance because I have something else to do or I’m not at a job or on somebody’s clock. Police, doctors, nurses, and the like are here to “protect the public” and any of these servants of the people who fail to render that service, whether on the clock or not, should be fined and prosecuted. I take my license seriously. I am from Louisiana and these EMTs had better be glad they are not there, nor in Texas or Florida ’cause none of these three state play those games!!!!

i am a paramedic and a nurse and i have seen both doctors and nurses let people die i dont know what really happened but in the city we dont get breaks you eat on the move. i dont believe they get breaks their either. so its something fishy going on. i know if i am off and i have no life saving equipment i would say call 911 cause you cant do much with out equipment but call 911.

its called Good Samaritan law…and if I’m not mistaken EMTALA…as employee’s of whichever hospital…if they were on the scene (break or not) they at that point made that hospital negligible for this poor woman and her infants death by failing to respond to her urgent needs…and they would be protected by the court if they were fired for acting while off duty…outside of that …it was just inhuman to watch her die and not attempt to do anything…even more so…why didn’t someone else attempt to take her to the E.R. or get another form of emergency assistance…I’ve said for the longest…the city of New York should be sued for it’s failure to provide an adequate infrastructure that provides for emergency vehicles to have 3 minute access to all areas of the city…

Well there is a lawsuit coming and it will more than likely be against the two EMT’s, The City of New York, and The FDNY. I say this because, it is this kind of mess that the City has allowed to fester or so long.
All these two cared about was the Bagel and Whatever beverage, now they have to worry about charges from the Family. They cannot deny what happen. Oh this is really great. Does police Officers who are on break stay on break when they received a broadcast in an emergency, no (at least I do not think so, but I could be incorrect).
The FDNY right now is more than likely interviewing and re interviewing those people that was in the Bagel establishment as well as the Police (now they may be looking into the background, too see if anyone is wanted or anything to try and save face for the FDNY).
Bloomberg has really messed up and he will try to distance himself (trust me people this is not a man for the African American Community stop believing in him)
Last but not the least, take a DAM CPR and Basic First Aid class, be observant of your co workers especially those that may be ill or pregnant. If you do not take care of yourselves, you can DAM well bet your bottom dollar, those EMT’s will not do it. you may think that this is a joke but, TRUST NO ONE, trust yourselves and start becoming STRONG again.

To play devil’s advocate, as it were, if they were off-duty, they have the right to do nothing–as despicable as it is. Of course this depends on the wording of the oath they took.

@FrenzyHunter…When you’re on break, your technically still on duty, that’s why you can’t drink alcohol or smoke weed on your break. I’m sure they are getting breaks throughout the day anyway, so what is this big thing about being on break, when someone is losing their life. I hope they do receive jail time for this, and send a clear message to others in the field.

One day I was on my way home from downtown Baltimore on the bus and I was every bit of seven months pregnant coming from my second job and the bus was packed with young men and women that were not willing to let me sit down even with the huge belly i had. I was the last person that was allowed on the bus and because another man wanted to get on the bus he pushed me into the machine that takes your money and i hit it belly first. i fell to the floor and all the bus operator said was that the guy that pushed me had to get off of the bus because it was still to packed. nobody the whole ride asked me if i was ok or anything except for a nice old jewish man that got on the bus way after this had happened he had just noticed me holding my belly with tears coming down my face. he said a jewish prayer for me and talked the bus driver into taking the detour to the emergency room. that nice little jewish man had a son that was a doctor at the hospital that the bus driver took me to and his son saved my baby.

from that mmoment on i have lost my faith in all peoples professional kindness because the bus driver did not demand that i got a seat or called an emt for me. i could hear peoples moans and groan when they realized that we had changed routes. the one person that did help me was very different then me and had no obligation to help me. i truely believe that the jewish man was an angel that was sent to me. all i can say is that people that turn their backs on people that need help will get it in the end and people that do help out of the kindness of your heart i really do believe that GOD will take care of them.

The one thing that most of the news stations aren’t mentioning is that they were simply dispatchers not practicing EMTs. The question is as dispatchers were they even legally allowed to do anything and if so would malpractice cover them if they were on their break? Their union probably ties their hands and limits what they can and cannot do if they wanted to keep their jobs. But why did the ambulance take almost an hour to get there with so many hospitals in the area???

@ _A_ I completely understand the emotional connection people have with this, seeing that it was a young pregnant mother and all. However, it is my right to not exercise my power, if I so choose.

If they didn’t want to save her, doesn’t mean they caused her death, or were responsible for it. It is not criminal to do nothing. If someone who knows CPR doesn’t attempt to resuscitate someone who was drowning, then that’s their right.

I don’t think anyone would take an oath to go to jail if they don’t save someone, given they have the ability to do so. bovine fecal matter.

Frenzy_Hunter…Im sorry but a coffee break isnt GOOD ENOUGH to not even TRY to check on the woman. I used to be a nurse and there were quite a few times that I was no where near the hospital I worked for, but when I saw someone in need or had an accident etc..I would try to help. They may have ONLY been dispatchers but everyone in the medical field has to learn basics for healthcare. I work in med finances, thats just paperwork BUT we ALL have to learn CPR, anatomy, physiology etc. And just as fellow humans they should have tried to help because they had knowledge that the average person on the scene didnt have. They should be ashamed for not helping.
