From NYTimes.com:

For more than three decades, they sang Mozart in Latin, Bach in German, and Cole Porter and Stevie Wonder in English, from Alice Tully Hall in New York to Royal Albert Hall in London.

For the audiences that marveled at the Boys Choir of Harlem, it was an additional wonder that the young performers with world-class voices had emerged from some of the most difficult neighborhoods of New York. December was always a busy month, as the choir toured the country’s premier concert halls and appeared on television Christmas specials.

But this year, the boys are nowhere to be found. Last week, Terrance Wright, a 39-year-old choir alumnus, picked up a microphone in front of the altar of Metropolitan Community United Methodist Church in Harlem, the choir’s last home, and delivered news that surprised few people but saddened many.

“Tell the people. Let it be known,” Mr. Wright said, glistening and exhausted after leading a Christmas concert by former singers in the choir. “There is no Boys and Girls Choir of Harlem.”

This is a shocker and all the church tithes and donations where did it all go it should have been left in a trust fund account to keep this going and help those in the community to keep being involved in positive activities dang.

I personally know the Turnbulls..Rip Walter, thank you for inventing the Harlem Boys Choir and RIP to Sammie aka Fatty X,his nephew who I was close with and who taught me how to use music equipment and letting me run with the guys in the studios to make music.I remember those days on the ASR 10,mpc 3000 at Daves studio.Turnbulls are a very musical family. They know music. And to Fattys little brother Jason, aka,Sire, watch out world,,He is one of the sickest producing music.Window Shopper,50,yeah,that was him.Very talented family and miss Fatty till this day.32 to young to die.Perhaps hes with his uncle Walter keeping in company and finding new talent in heaven.

The Turnbulls are the reason this group lost its funding. You can’t protect a child molestor and expect the people paying you to find it ok. I would have liked to see the program continue without them, but I haven’t read anything that says an atttempt was made to do so. I bet the choir could be brought back under the proper leadership.

Why is this on the shoulders of black people on the east coast. HBC was a Black American cultural institution that traveled the world. It looks to me like mismanagement of charitable donations, they were raking in the dough until the molestation charges came up and they had to pay out depleted their funding.
