these kids are 9 to 14 and the girl was 8. These are children. And it is not ok to throw them in a prison with adult murders, adult rapist, and such. No one knows the mindset of these kids. ok I agree with ya’ll saying the boys should be punished for rape and whatever, but look back at the facts and ask yourselves this question…what the hell was she doing going with those boys, and if she ran out half nude what part of her was nude? if the top half of her was nude than how can you say its rape? sexual assalt most definately, but not rape. Bottom line-an 8 yr old cannot legally consent to any type of sexual conduct with anyone-regardless of the age. As a mother of a 7 yr old, I cannot fathom placing blame on the victim for an act of violence committed against them. At 8, even if the victim was acting overting sexualized, she would have had to have learned if from somewhere, someone. Secondly, I have to say that I am appalled at the number of people actually questioning the fault of an 8 yr old child, if she is a tru victim.I understand that the facts still need to be uncovered, but if the reported account of the assault are correct,, then we have a responsibility to support her in her recovery; not place here on the chopping block as “the cause” in her assault. I believe that once we as a people get to a point where we begin can actually beleive that any true victim “caused” a a sex crime to be committed against them we have lost a bit of our humanity.

Additionally, the response of the parents is nothing new. There are other countries that also view anyone of the female gender as expendable, especially when a reason can be found (like in this story-shame to family by being sexually assaulted). This is not something that we can argue as it is cultural and has significant weight among the country men that share that belief. But, we can achnowledge our disagreement with that beleif, and show our support for to girls and women who become victims over and over because of this belief.

Lastly, the young men involved must be accountable for their actions, but again I wonder at ages 9-14, why did they beleive that such behaviour was acceptable enough to risk dong it? What about how they view what is right and wrong? With children there is always a beacon of guidance, good or bad. CHildren arent born having ideas about the world,its the parents the are supposed to do their best to teach them.

I feel a sense of sadness for all the children involved in this situation, and pray for all of them and their families.

There is never a need to blame the victim in a case such as this. Even if the lil girl went with the boys willingly, I am almost sure that being sexually assaulted did not cross her mind. I am aware of the cultural differences, but that is still no excuse to blame the victim. All I can do is pray for her and her family. Also for the boys involved. You have to think about what they had been subjected to at ages 9-14 to make them act out in that way. They too are victims of their enviornments.

I have worked in a perfoming group and panelist to inform the public how often sexual assault occurs in our US of A. Statistic shows a high rate of abuse in general like 1 out 4 females get sexually abuse in this country.Here’s the tricky part, we all know in the BLACK and BROWN communities we teach our kids not to snitch even when theyve been raped, molested, etc.Since we know 75-80% of the time the perpetrator are the ones close to them FAMILY and FRIENDS. Even though these people have fled their countries these children and their parents are still bound by their religious and social ideals that shaped them as people. Those just don’t disappear with a plane ride across an ocean. I don’t think their parent’s should be punished, but I do think the four boys should not only go to jail but be mandated to receive intensive counseling to address deeper issues that might have contributed to this assault. In turn, the parents, from this point on need to understand what is and what is not tolerated in the country they are currently in. And if they refuse to adhere to those regulations then we should not grant asylum to refugees or anyone else for that matter who refuse to peacefully integrate into our society.

What a real shame. Unfortunately, when women get raped in Nigeria, their cries for help often fall on deaf ears, and many are even threatened with their lives if they dare snitch out the rapists. I have noticed disturbing behaviors from Nigerian men, and young Nigerian boys in this country. They often don’t like being rejected, and they certainly can’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Nigerian men are persistent, and often stalk women they are going after. They are obssessed with sex, and many come to this country thinking they can treat women the same way they do on their home soil, and have their way with them. The fact that these boys are young, and displaying this behavior is really disturbing. I mean no offense to any honest upstanding citizens from Nigeria. But, I gotta tell you. The reputation they have in regards to women is just insane!

Mrs BLD, you made a very ignorant comment. There were people living in the land that is known as Liberia long before Europeans went to Africa, enslaved people and those slaves were able to return. Why do people seem to believe that they discovered/found a country? Was it lost? It may not have had a formal name or boundaries, but the dictation of land lines resulted in the split of many tribes in Africa. You are right though, there is no excuse for this behaviour.

I think that people have to realize that these children are victims too. The young men that is.
