This is truly a sad story. I feel so bad for our elderly (of any race). I don’t know why some people are turning this into a black or white issue. Most of the elderly American population is suffering due to lack of income. I use to work retail and the elderly customers would come in the store and steal so much stuff. I’m not talking about things they may have just wanted but things they needed to survive such as pain pills, depends, cups of noodles and cans of ensure. Most of them were white not black. So don’t make this a race issue. I know for a fact that me grandmother or mother wouldn’t do anything such as this. I’m not saying what she did was right but I can understand it. For all we know she could have been in and out of jail all her life. Young drug dealers become old drug dealers if the don’t change their ways, go to jail or die. If she did have kids and they knew of this then they need to sit in jail with her. If she was a hard working woman and she had to turn to a life of crime then my prayers are with her. This is just a wake up call to our American people.

In Canada and other countries, they make the children care for their parents. They should do that here in the US. I would never allow my mother to fail after having my back all my entire life. I would quit my job and sell for myself if it came to that, however, I wouldnt allow her to do that herself.

Suppose that guy was out to rob her and was to harm her? That guy could have been a drug addict or thief with no conscience.

It’s time for this generation to educate themselves on a level that they will have a better life than their parents did. It make no sense that this grandmother’s family couldn’t help her therefore she’s selling drugs.

In my family no elders are living in projects, on low incomes, food stamps whatsoever because MY generation pick ourselves up do the right thing and look out for each others. There’s no point in grandmother’s family having babies and they can’t even help themselves let alone her!

Which Canada was one respondent talking about. I lived there for a long perieod and there is no such as children being forced to take care of their parents. If they do it is out of their love or sense of obligation not because it is mandated or legislated. If the children do not then social services would step in. Maybe it is also because of the nature of the source countries from where communities that have populated Canada lately come from, those with very strong family ties and where children care for their elderly while the elderly too have a valued role in being there for the little ones.

As for other places, I am a southern African and for many there is an unwritten code that children take care of their parents to the death. That is why too you do not often hear of homes for the elderly. For the majority, that would be equivalent to abandonment. Our elderly age in place and even if it presents challenges of caring for theme, very few would have it any other way because the more they age, the more important they are for some of us as the cystalization of wisdom from their long lives and also as the equivalent of living spirits. Those who see little value in this and looks at them as an added burden would care very little.

Maybe she is a hustler and always been. But also maybe this could also stimulate a discussion on the reality and magnitude of elderly poverty that sees some resorting to these desperate activities to survive. This happens when there is little to no supports from the formal and informal institutions (families and governments).
