House of Payne Star Will Graduate From Spelman

Cassi Davis, known to most as Ella Payne on “Tyler Perry’s House of Payne,” has been a Spelman College senior for 21 years.

All of that changes Sunday for the Holly Springs, Mississippi native. Davis will finally get her bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the historic women’s college in Atlanta.

“I was a senior 21 years, and I only needed to remove one ‘I,’ just one incomplete to get my diploma,” Davis told BlackAmericaWeb.com. “I am so excited. You just don’t know. I am excited!”

What’s more, is that if she had waited any longer to restart her effort, she said she would have lost all of the other credits she had gained toward a degree when she first attended Spelman.

“God just ordered everything so it would work out,” she said.

When she left Spelman after four years in the 1980s, Davis went on to pursue her career as a singer and actor. She entered Spelman with the dream of becoming a professional gospel singer.

    21 YEARS! Spelmen allows 21 years to grant a BA? Did she have to put in appeals to extend her time? It was just one class you say? C’mon, who sent out this press release? I could understand if it was an honorary degree. Spelman degrees are TOUGH! Who does all that work, gets down to one ‘I’, then quits? Naaah, something ain’t right about this story.
