How Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab Became A Terrorist

A young man checks in at the airport in Nigeria with a ticket to America bought with cash, and only carry-on luggage. More than a month before, his father, a wealthy banker, has visited the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, worried that his son has gone missing and may be hanging around with Yemeni-based extremists. The National Security Agency has picked up intelligence that Al Qaeda in Yemen is planning to use an unnamed Nigerian for a terror attack on the United States. The man has been denied a visa to enter Britain, but he has a valid multiple-entry visa for the United States.

In the movie version, lights would be flashing on computer screens in a darkened room in a nondescript building in the suburbs of northern Virginia, and intelligence officials would be on the phone asking urgent questions about the young man. In real life, nothing of the sort happened. There is, indeed, a plain, unmarked building outside of Washington where analysts of the National Counterterrorism Center (NCTC) sift through intelligence, looking for threatening signs and patterns. Their operations room even looks like something out of the movies. It was designed with help from the Walt Disney Co., according to intelligence officials involved with the planning. But when Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, boarded Northwest Airlines Flight 253 on Christmas morning with a bomb sewn into his underpants, the U.S. government did nothing to stop him. Possibly the worst terrorist strike against the U.S. since 9/11 was averted only by luck and the bravery of other passengers and the airplane’s crew.

    What does organized religion have to do with anything? Tim Mc Veigh, The Unibomber, and Mr. Cherry (the one who placed the bomb in the church in Alabama back in the 60′s) weren’t part of an organized religion were they?

    beauty456, McVeigh and the unibomber were raised catholic, The ‘men’ responsible for the church bombings attended church every sunday with their families while attending KKK rallies in the meantime…Organized religion has A LOT to do with some peoples actions negative and positive. I am not a part of an organized herd of sheep, oops! Church I meant to say…BUT because of that fact I am told daily that I am going to ‘hell’ (whatever that place is), By christians and Jehova’s witnesses alike..ya know, those people that say God doesnt judge while they call me a hellbound sinner?

    Hello Califemme, McVeigh as you say, was raised Catholic, but at the time, he was not practicing anything that was religious, and so with the Unibomber. The Unibomber was a genius who lived alone. As for Mr. Cherry, I can believe that about him. I to am part of an organized religion, and proud of that. I have no interest of killing anyone, unless in self-defense of course. Everyone has the right to protect themselves. I make no judgement calls about things that I do not know about. I tend to use what God has given to me, which is my own Brain, I tend not to let anyone brainwash me at all. I think for myself, I remember Jim Jones very WELL!

    People can turn anything into extremism. There are extremist Muslims who kill “infidels”, extremist Christians who declare war on Gays and ProChoice people and extremist Atheists who relentlessly mock the religious. I dont belong to any religion, but I do believe in a God of some sort. I think religion is nothing but good intentions, and its people who pervert it into a weapon. Cause of this, I dont blame religion for any of the wars going on now, or that have happened, or that will happen later. I do blame people for their actions.
