A federal judge says a Tennessee school’s ban on Confederate clothing was a reasonable attempt to prevent disruptions because of previous racial threats at the school.

U.S. District Judge Tom Varlan threw out a former student’s free speech lawsuit against the school dress code, ruling Tuesday that there would be no retrial.

Anderson County High School had banned Tommy Defoe from wearing a belt buckle and T-shirt bearing the Confederate flag.

A jury had failed to reach a verdict in Defoe’s case nearly a year ago.

Defoe’s lawyers say the ruling, which was based on a federal appeals decision in a similar case, will likely be appealed.

I agree with the decision to ban the Confederate flag at the high school. I understand the whole argument from people whow support the Confederate flag wwhen they say “Im not racist but my ancestors history and my right to appreciate my history shouald be just as much a right as a black person wearing African colors on their clothing” but the argument is much bigger than that, its abouat what the Confederate flag symbolizes. The Confederate flag symbolizes the period in American history when the South wanted to leave the United States just because they supported their “economic right” to own slaves for economic benefit. The Confederate flag is a hurtful symbol to many non-white citizens, not just blacks.
