Last weekend, a white sorority step team won first place in the Sprite Step Off competition, beating out black competitors from Divine Nine organizations. Several people are pretty bothered by this. Howard University’s student newspaper, The Hilltop, wrote an article rounding up people’s reactions to Zeta Tau Alpha sorority’s victory. While some were happy for the team, others were perplexed and upset: “Sprite didn’t do a good job explaining the show; they manipulated the crowd. I thought the Zetas were more of a showcase. I thought this was a Divine Nine event,” said one student.

“Sprite used the step off to exploit black culture,” said another.

And, finally, “How are you going to take something that’s ours, and give it away?”

That notion—that a particular form of cultural expression can be “ours,” for Black people only—is common, and isn’t entirely without merit.

Text continues after gallery …

After all, over the centuries, Black people in the U.S. have been the creators of many cultural institutions, trends, and activities. While white folks were busy banning us from … pretty much every single thing ever, we went off created our own legacy. So things like HBCUs, the Divine Nine, and hip-hop were all born. And at the outset, these things were very much ours—we were the primary participants and happy to remain as such, and people of other races weren’t clamoring to associate themselves with us anyway. But as American society has become less segregated, so too has American culture, creating opportunities for several awkward “white interloper” moments just like the step off.

Remember Joshua Packwood, the white Morehouse valedictorian from a few years back? What about the white woman who won this year’s Miss Hampton pageant? And surely no one could forget Eminem, white rapper extraordinaire. In each of these instances, the sense that white people were swooping in and “beating us at our own game” was keenly felt by some people, many of whom weren’t shy about expressing their ire.

RELATED: JUST CURIOUS: Is It Racist To Hate On The White Miss Hampton?

But understandable as that response may be, Black people simply can’t have it both ways. We can’t demand genuine respect for our music, our traditions, and our colleges and then expect people merely to worship from afar. It’s only natural that respect and admiration for historically Black cultural traditions would spawn a desire among people of all races to participate in them.

Even if that participation means competition—academic, musical, or otherwise—we should be confident enough in our own abilities that we aren’t compelled to practice exclusion. And in those moments when are out-stepped by a white group, out-rapped by a white emcee, or outperformed in the classroom by a white student, that isn’t a signal that the outsider needs to be thrown out. Rather it means we need to work harder and do better, the same as we would if someone of our own race had bested us.

That’s a tough one to answer. I saw their performance and thought they were great. On the other hand, it is a part of black heritage that perhaps Sprite could’ve done a better job acknowledging which left me with that feeling like maybe they didn’t belong there in the first place.

Then I would be a hypocrite because the competition seemed to be a free for all event. We should really let go of this sense of entitlement, ‘it’s a black thing’, ‘they are taking away everything’. Damn, accept the fact that everyone and anyone can break barriers. Do we not remember when we wanted equal opportunities?

It is to say someone does not belong when things do not go your way. Black people have been hearing this for centuries. Black people had to go in and not only prove they can compete with Whites, but beat them as well. We can complain about White people partaking in what is usually a predominately Black event and beating us, or we can be better than them and give the next one something to think about before then decide to stand up next to us. It is no longer about being better than your own, but being better than everyone. If you allow one to come in and beat you, then you leave the door open for the rest. If you do not want Whites to compete in step shows then you to beat them worse than Blacks. If you do not want Whites in HBCU’S then everyone should come together and make it so they graduate in the bottom 10-25% of the class. If you do not want Whites in hip hop then you have to start being more creative and making them feel inadequate. Just like we fit into their world because we have proven to be better than them. They will be able to fit into our world because they have proven to be better than us. Do not cry or complain. Black people strive so hard to be better than one another how about we come together and strive to be better than Whites.

Folks need to calm the hell down and SEE through the HATE!! Zeta Tau Alpha ripped it up like a paper shredder and DESERVED the TOP PRIZE for being the TOP PERFORMERS. Just because someone is black, doesnt ENTITLE them to a damn thing. The lesson for ALL to learn is to NEVER come unprepared; NEVER underestimate the competition & when one brings CREATIVITY, INNOVATION, FRESH & UNIQUE approaches to the table, you will go home THE WINNER!

Hmmmm….I wonder if now we will see a all Korean, Japanese, Brazillian or Martian step team hit the stage next.

CONGRATULATIONS ZETA TAU ALPHA, 2010 SPRITE STEP OFF CHAMPIONS!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MsLee/ MsLee

has anyone here beento a real step competition????? the crowd picsk the winner by show of applause and sheer noise. they bring the groups on stage and ask people to cheer the loudest for the winner and the judges use that. honestly, if people at Howard were cheering loud enough Zeta Tau Alphs must have done something fierce. black or white it’s about the performance and my the best crew win. All kind of races have won an America’s Best Dance Crews why is this any different? If the a black greek org HAS to win the ste off, then no other ethinicity of greek org should be allowed to enter. and THAT would racist no?

    get it together

and califeeme23…. why are you always on these boards attacking people for their comment. everyone can post their opinion whether people find it stupid or not… even you ma. nobody knows are studpid you really are until you type your thoughts. slow down.

They “WON THAT”, no one gave anything away except; the young brothers and sisters of our precious Black Greek oraganizations. The spirit of our tradition of stepping has been long gone, every since we starting being part of the genre of how white culture does things

    A Sigma Man “Blu-Phi…”

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Sirron106/ Sirron106

That Zeta Tau brought the pain. Those sisters step for a straight 9 minutes no long pauses. They brought the pain. We all know that they stole some steps from other sororities and fraterneties but they were good. Bottom line is this you come to win. The other greek sororities didn’t bring it like they should have and ZTA won that paper. Stepping is stepping no matter what Frat or Sorority you represent. Qsi

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Babyface843/ Babyface843

ha they revised who won..that’s good…still sick and tired of people thinking we have to be the ones to give everyone props on imitating us. If it was made for and done by black people it should stay that way.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DN30001/ DN30001

Made for and done for black people?? Cmon Son! The AKAs shouldn’t have taught em how to step 15 5years ago…The elitism (Disguised as philanthropy) came back to bite them in the a$$. If Jazz, Rock, Hip Hop was prone to attack once it became a tool of capitalism, why don’t you think stepping wasn’t prone for infiltration once it “blew up”. Those girls practiced hard for that and they were on point. To ne, the AKA killed themselves by pulling that outdated Rhythm Nation stuff. They did it because its tradition???? So Sprite has to forget their ‘originality rule’ because that corny BS was tradition?? at least get the routine down first…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/babylovekat/ babylovekat

I agree wholeheartedly. I think some may share the same perspectives as some whites who felt the presidency of the United States only belong to white men. Should we hold the same perspective because of a white sorority won a competition that was won by blacks?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LATINQT24/ LATINQT24

I watched the video on youtube and grant it I did not see what the other teams did for their routine, but the Zeta Tau Alpha squad did a GREAT job. I don’t think that we need to continue to look at things as a black or white thing or a cultural thing because, although that may be true, things like that tend to keep us seperated when we are all God’s children and what difference does it really make. Bottom line should be the best team…white, black, hispanic, asian whoever should be the winner

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DameDivalicious/ DameDivalicious

I am a black woman and thought those white girls really done a great job in the competition and deserved to win first place. To whine about if they should have won because they’re white is ridiculous. It’s not as if white girls been winning stepping competition for years. Black people have been taking over in a lot of fields like basketball, football, boxing, golf, ice skating just to name a few things. Golf was mostly a sport white people do until Tiger came along and changed that. Now we seeing more black people doing things in the Olympics that mostly white people done.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ATL_Diamond1911/ ATL_Diamond1911

Clearly HBCUs and step shows came about because of racism, so why are Black people who actually may be in these Divine Nine orgs being told not to look at things Black and White. I think Black people who thinks they shouldn’t have won because they are White are wrong, but the people who are saying its NOT a race thing clearly aren’t Greek or have attended an HBCU. I am African American and belong to a Black greek organization. You wouldn’t believe how many of my sorors are happy to see sorors from a HBCU chapter visit them because of the exclusive (not inclusive) attitudes they get from White sororities. Its good to have an opinion, so to all of you who thinks its right to tell me I can’t can kiss it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/DN30001/ DN30001

It seems that the Black greeks got out greeked by the greek greeks…

Bottom line…if the art of stepping was so sacred, it should have never been introduces by a BGLO to a white org in the first place…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Delta_Dream7/ Delta_Dream7

I’ve viewed all the You Tube videos for the Sprite Step Off and ZTA was probably the most precise in their steps and motions on stage. I didn’t see many errors in their routine, it was clean for the most part. However, there was no originality. I’ve seen all the steps they have done in routines from The Divine Nine. ZTA even “borrowed” steps that are synonymous with some of the African American sororities and fraternities. I don’t care what color these girls are… that aspect shouldn’t matter. They were precise in their steps but certainly not original. Sprite needs to be more concrete with how the judging is scored and define broad categories. I applaud all of the finalists for their hard work that they did to make it to the finals (much love to my Sorors for making it there, I’m proud of all of you).

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LACEDBBW/ LACEDBBW

honestly, white or not they rocked it…. they were on point and their lines were tight. excluding them because they’re white is racist! plain and simple. do white greeks allow black greeks to compete with majority whites? idk. and if they didn’t how many morning shows would al sharpton be on? the soluton: maybe the “divine 9″ should tighten up, polish up some steps and invade a few white greek step shows.
from what i saw, the best steppers won, now as far as sprite b***hing out and making it a 3 or 4way tie is a type of tail between the legs thing. again, if it were a all white greek step show and the black greeks won and then 2weeks later (after some uproar from the whites) they came back and tied it all up what would have been the black communitiy’s reaction?

p.s. they won! end of story, step ya game up and in the words of the white girls on tv BRING IT!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Msteacher1/ Msteacher1

I agree. Zeta Tau Alpha did their thing. They won it fair and square. I have to say I was extremely blown away by their performance. This is an example for my sistas to always bring their “A” game in everything, especially when its something concerning our traditions. Sistas dont you know how admired we are? How people are always trying to emulate us and what we do?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Daneegyrl/ Daneegyrl

I totally agree with this article. After watching the competition, those girls completely “out-stepped” the competition. We don’t want other groups to exclude us (to this point, men and women have sacrificed their lives), why is it ok for us to exclude them? Sprite should NOT have backed down. And yes, I am a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Travelling1/ Travelling1

Delta Dream,I hear no originality but nothing in the competition was original. ATLDIAMOND1911 you kind of confused me here. you speak of racism and HBCU’s, all the divine 9 are represented through out the country. Also why do you use ATL_Diamond1911 and speak of your Soror’s. C’mon son

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/scotian/ scotian

While we don’t have step competitions here in Canada, the biggest problem I see with this whole issue is the co-opting of another aspect of African American culture. Over time, the cultural and historical signifigance of the art of stepping will be lost in the crass commercialism of the European culture. We have seen it with hip hop. The sad aspect of this is that future generations of African American children will think that stepping is something that white people created and our participation in step competitions will become the novelty and not the norm.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ROCK42063/ ROCK42063

IS THIS ALL NEWSONE/BLACKPLANET..FIND THE DUMBEST/WEAKEST STORIES AND TRY TO MAKE THEM A RACIAL ISSUE. IF I’M NOT MISTAKEN THE THE SPRITE STEP OFF/DANCE COMPETITION WAS OPEN TO ALL COLLEGES AND NOT JUST HBCU’S, SO WHATS THE PROBLEM WITH A WHITE SORORITY WINNING A STEP OFF/DANCE COMPETITON. THIS JUST LIKE NEWSONE/BLACKPLANET TRYING TO MAKE A RACIAL ISSUE ABOUT MISS HAMPTON BEING WHITE, SHE WENT TO HAMPTON AND WAS VOTED MISS HAMPTON BY THE STUDENTS OF HAMPTON, SO WHERE IS THE PROBLEM.

I HAVE TO AGREE WITH 2byourlover…DO WE WANT INTEGRATION OR SEGREGATION, BECAUSE WE CANT HAVE INTEGRATION FOR SOMETHINGS AND SEGREGATION FOR OTHER THINGS.

I don’t usually become involved with matters of this sort but you must admit
one thing is true, the WFS came with proper game and in all fairness…Stepped all over our BFS and in proper fashion don’t hate but respect the game….after all, someone thought they should be invited and they knew in order to be there that they must bring the “A” game and that they did do!!
They cannot come in unless you invite them in….Ever heard that somewhere before?
The right thing to do is to give back the prize because they did earn it fair and square and with no doubt about it. Next time let this be the lesson you should not lose. I watched the Black Female Sorority, I love my sisters but they didn’t do as well they might have been able to do. Hate me if you will but you cannot hate the facts which in this case is the truth.

God created us all and when it’s all said and done black or white our hearts pump the same color red and our money is the same color green. So why in 2010 are we still making race an issue. I realize racism still exist however change has to start somewhere. Is there anywhere in the “step handbook” that says you have to be a certain color to step to the beat of your heart and soul? They ZETA girls tore it up hands down and earn their place in history. Let it go already!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cookies1972/ cookies1972

Those girls stepped their behinds off, a little weak towards the end but they were very good. I can’t see why race should be an issue in this situation. If we try to segregate different events what else will that lead to? Too many people died to end segregation so why try to bring it back. So, I guess the other sororities will have to bring their A-game next time.

WE CREATED STEPPING…I go to an PWI and at least they got respect..whites or latinos wont step out of respect for us. and if they do they ask the Black fraternities and sororities first.

Not only that…but whites and their social groups have access to funding that our social groups do not. That should have been an all Black competition.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/prpallen/ prpallen

From as far back as I can remember, step competitions have always been about who steps the best. Clearly, Zeta Tau out-stepped AKA and DST and it wasn’t even close to being a tie! I think they just wanted to do what was historically correct and that was wrong! How can we expect other races to have an open and accepting attitude if we don’t ourselves? You will never win everybody over but when there are constant cries of racism on our part, how can we try to hold other races to a higher standard than we operate at? If everyone would stop whining and bring their A-game whenever they are doing anything, we would be more successful as a whole!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/cherronw/ cherronw

If they were the best ones then they should have won. However, I will say that sometimes white people are given more accolades for doing things at a mediocre level or higher if it is something that black people usually do. For example dancing, singing r & b, or rapping. I mean is Eminem really the best rapper, or is eveyone just surprised he can rap well and be white? When it’s the other way around, black people have to go above and beyond to get recognition a lot of the time. Hopefully it was just a step towards equality and a fair competition.

It is truly sad, ZTA won, I watched the videos and they won simple and plain. Bring your A game or dont come at all. I am ashamed at the whining, and more ashamed of any perception that Coke was pressured into making it a tie. This is almost as bad as boxing. Big money involved typically begins abuses such as this and we have to do much better than this.

What would these same people say if someone jumped up tomorrow and said, we need to recount the vote, McCain is actually the President! Sheesh. Where is the pride our forefathers DIED for? You are NOT entitled to anything in this world. Things are not equal today BUT they are the BEST (as far as equal conditions) they have EVER been. If you cannot make it today, you could NEVER have made it in America.

    Nuff said!

I’ll make this plain and simple… If the white crew was Black there wouldn’t even be a question on the matter… They were the better crew hands down… Play the performances again without looking at them and LISTEN, the crowd response alone tells you who won…. Disregard the ignorance in people saying “White people always trying to take our style” I’d rather have those same white people appreciating and giving our tradition it’s proper respect and doing it on a highly respected level as they did (keep it real…)than to have those same white people repping the kkk and helping keep Black people from prosperity… What about the crew that came out doing the Rhythm Nation routine??? Are you kidding me? In my book they lost right then… Don’t take the stage doing someones routine, choreograph your own show and be respected for the full creativity…

YES! THE WHITE CREW SHOULD HAVE WON IT ALL! (BE REAL AND GIVE PROPS WHERE THEY ARE DUE…)

    -GONE-
