From The Maroon Tiger:

In early October of this year, Morehouse College Administration will enact its new “Appropriate Attire Policy”. Based on Dr. Franklin’s conceptualization on the Renaissance Man, specifically his expectation of the “well-dressed” man of Morehouse, the policy will set a campus-wide standard for student’s attire.

The policy outlines 11 expectations pertaining to what students should not wear while on campus. Instead of requiring certain articles of clothing, as a typical dress code would, the policy details those articles of clothing deemed unacceptable for students. Some of the expectations discussed in the policy include to prohibit wearing “sagging” pants, women’s clothing, and headwear. The policy will be distributed to students electronically through Tigernet and the school website. The policy will also be outlined in the student handbook and discussed in Crown Forums for students.

While some students disagree with the policy, other students agree with purpose behind the policy.

“I would say that about 95% percent of the students on this campus feel that appearance matters to them,” Dr. William Bynum, Vice-President of the Office of Student Services, said. “We are not trying to isolate anyone that falls under a category, you can just look at it like it’s one out of eleven things being addressed.”

Dr. Bynum explained that students began voicing concerns to administration about attire on campus this semester. In turn administration partnered with the SGA to work with the student body on an attire policy. Some students feel that the anticipated policy lacks proper planning and investigation.

Safe Space, a gay/straight alliance student campus organization has been vocal about the issue.

Co-president Michael Edwards said, “Creating this policy was easy and quick. But the energy and effort put into something determines the greater result.”

I think its excellent. The expectation is that these young men will graduate from Morehouse to become professionals. There’s few corporations that would allow their employees to wear du rags or sagging jeans so why not let them get used to it from the beginning of their education. They need to learn to dress the part if they are going to carry themselves as professionals.
Plus underwear are meant to be worn UNDER your clothes…there is no reason why I should need to see your drawers!!!! Pull your pants up men!!

I agree with the purpose being the policy, but at the same time its kind of affecting individual rights.

I think all this s**t is too much….rags should be worn at home to do housework; grills are just plain tacky and can screw up your gumline and teeth, too(my late grandfather did that back in the day, and lost his teeth);and as far as the sagging pants. I DESPISE it! I wouldn’t hire a guy with sagging pants even if he has BA or a BS…why would a guy like to wear them like that in the first place????? I think they are inviting, if you know what I mean…You don’t see ladies doing that, because they WILL be APPROACHED, and not in a good way…..

The reason Morehouse’s number of new students have dropped tremendously over the last 10 years is due to the fact that it doesnt embrace the community around it! Im from and has lived in Atlanta my entire life, and when i say they truly isolate themselves from, the joke we like to say at Georgia State, ” The Peasants”. The message they preach, for the most part, does not match their actions. They point the finger and criticize, instead of embracing their fellow brothers and offering help and mentor-ship. In my hometown of Atlanta they have become a image of “BLACK Classicism” Instead of one of the communities strengths and great source of pride it once use to be. By the way my mother is a Spelman grad. and she agrees.

*If students don’t have sufficeint enough judgement skills to decipher when and where the sag their pants something should be done.

  • 10-21-2009 7:43 pm

What happened to individuals experssing themselves? I think this decision should be reconsidered. If you don’t like the way something looks turn your head-that’s what my mom always told me. I respect the reputation that Morehouse has earned for itself but, but this exclusionary decision does not sit well with me. This dress code needs to be reconsidered. If the students don’t sufficeint skills to know where and when to wear their pants low then I agree. What I mean is if students are graduating from Morehouse and then going on job interviews with their pants sagging then yeah something should be done. If students are sagging thier pants in school that is a little different. Morehouse should reconsider its ruling.

Sagging your pants DOES NOT HAVE HOMOSEXUAL PRISON ORIGINS!!!!!!! its a scare tactic that black preachers used to discourage young men from doing it once it became a fad. By tell us that its a symbol of being gay was a way to get men to stop. The reason alot of ppl think this is true is due to the fact that prison inmates are given pants with no draw string for fear they will commit suicide. They only have 4 sizes to choose from Small Medium Large Xlarge. Often they dont fit and since they have no way to hold there pants up they fell below their waist. Sagging your pants started in poor black neighborhoods because often mothers would buy their sons pants 2-3 sizes too big in order to insure that she wouldnt waste money buying clothes for a growing child. I dont wear my pants on my waist but, i do find it disrespectful to sag to the point you are showing your underwear.

You want “RESPECT”…you’ve got to start looking, dressing, and acting like MEN!…Sagging pant’s,a Fad that they can keep (In Prison)that is where it originated from. It’s meaning is …By wearing your pant’s half-way off your “A$$”you’re basically saying your(BUTT’S)available! Now why in the hell would someone want to adopt a fad, like that in the first place.

Finally!!!! It’s taken wayy too long! Someone has finally stood up and said that this type of dress is NOT a POSITIVE portrayal of Black people!! God knows how much I can’t stand a grown man (30+) trying to talk to me with sagging pants and a do-rag!!! Damn! :-@!

I think that it is a much needed step forward to redirecting our young men and women. I believe that the students may think that they are being treated like children but if someone has to tell that is not acceptable then they immature like children. I wish that more school would step up and help guide the young generation. I personally look out my window and work and wish that dress code was a law when it comes to saggy pants. The pants have gone from sitting below the waist to being completely below the behind. The only thing covering these guy’s behinds are the thin fabric of their boxer shorts. People’s pants are literally falling off in public. I don’t understand at what point we decided that was okay.

This is about representing your school & yourself well. Morehouse is one of the most prestigious universities in the country, and it looks bad to prospective students and their parents, if the campus looks like a Gucci Mane video. You’re conditioning yourself to be an adult…a man no less, so what good comes of you wearing your clothes damn near at your knees, or a wave cap outside of the house? If you wouldn’t show up to work @ Goldman Sachs, or Morgan Stanley Dean Witter like that…why would you come out in public like that? Oh…and one more thing…it’s an all-male school…..why are you showing your ass to a bunch of men???

  • 10-19-2009 10:56 am

Definitely a good idea…REAL thugs dont go to college so why are they being portrayed walking around campus?…I mean whose really gonna take you seriously with your pants hanging off your a** This is definitely a step in the right direction..I get so disgusted when I see a brotha with his DIRTY underwear showing…Do you plan on going to an interview like that? or do you think I’m gonna take you to meet my father with your pants hanging down…I dont think so…Its about time someone took a stand against this f*ckery…

Some of these comments are really disturbing for such young minds to be in the gutter about these wearing of sagging pants-thugs now and thugs forever thuggish minds do thuggish things-nothing mindful to do but look stupid both black and whites & others are just as bad,I hope they do away with this style of dressing-no need for it-time to let go now and dress appropriately for once let this style go away and never return.don’t need to know what’s under your pants or what color your briefs are some are truely dirty and dengie, need to take them off and wash your butt, put some clean ones on and pull your pants up who wants to see that disgussing site, pitiful.

  • 10-18-2009 3:29 pm

I hope this is the pass I get so tired of looking at these guys butts and briefs while walking all out in the street-no college and no where is permissable to me for these everywhere no respect for yourself how can anyone else respect you, where the respect for yourselves-no one is going to hire you with your pants hanging down under your butt-this maybe a style which I wish would have never happened-it’s ridiculous looks nasty and very dirty-who wants to look at your butt when walking behind someone,it should be unlawful to wear such mess, what does it mean-prison look well then that’s where it should stay in prison unless you are thinking of goint there, it’s demeaning on both sides-I wish they would arrest everyone who wears these pants below the buttom of your butt, please raise your pants up and wear a belt that fits and look presentable for others as well as yourself because it does not look cute at all, to me it’s not a style it’s a “hot mess” that needs to be corrected-glad my son has never submitted to this style of attire and never will and he is a college graduate & got a job for his appearance and knowledge do u think anyone would have hired him if he went in their office with his pants under his butt-”hell no” so let this style die and die forever.NO MORE BOTTOM’S UNDER BUTT WEARING PANTS VERY DISGRACEFUL.

This is great, that some major group of black people have stood up and said
no to this ignorant, updated minstrel, coonery, buck show behavior.
Maybe, just maybe it might help black america wake up from the bad effects
of all this dumbing down that is been in full effect under the racist
republikkklan. These images and the behavior overall is ignorant, self hating
and self destructive to the afrikan/black race.
Now something needs to be done about all these slave plantation type
talk shows and these trashy, urban ghetto hood rat type books.
Maybe we can get back to being an intelligent race of people again on a large scale and ignorance will finally play out among black poor people
    in this country.

Very good point lstfadienbreed…College is also a place to teach you how to present yourself when you leave college. We are evaluated in so many different ways while we are in college. If you did not take yourself very serious in college, how effective are you going to do it after you graduate? And then on the other hand, what college wants that kind of poor representation when you go for a job interview and that colleges’ name is on your resume. These colleges have reputations to upkeep. Just like in the Hampton Report, that caucasian female got upset and reacted too quickly to the stereotype and had to go back and make a formal apology to the school and the media for her sudden reaction. Now Hampton goes down in history for not only her win but also for the way that she as the winner reacted and behaved nationally. Simply put, people we need to start living for others and not just ourselves (especially) if it not YOUR house, business or where YOU sign the check there to exist or co-exist.

I think it’s a good idea. In this world you have to live by rules and regulations. You should want to carry yourself as a “well-presentable” individual. I want to know why would you want to walk around with your pants hanging off your a..? I read the comment by jazzpast. Funny, but, you do know that in jail, a person who saggs his pants might as well wear dresses and heels. People are in such a search to individualize therselves that they are all the same. Being raised by t.v. instead of someone real, concreate. I remember the day I attempted to sag my pants. I walked in front of my mother and she said” unh unh, I don’t like that.” At that point, I knew that any real woman would not find that attractive. Let’s face it people, stereotyping is real and will always be. We all do it. So lets not get mad when it happens to you. If you carry yourself as a well presentable person, then you will be treated like one. If you want to look like a thug, or whatever title you wnat to give it, then you must be willing to except all that comes with the image. Everything causes a sub-conscience effect on a person. Of course you’re not suppose to judge a book by it’s cover, but, you can tell what type of person someone is by their choice of attire. So even if you start out as this person, being in this state for so long will cause a change, and overall, effect the way one functions.
Besides, I want to know from somebody, what does this image in return tell one about one’s self? Before answering, please think about it…

College is supposed to be a place where you start to transform into adult-hood right? Then why tell people how and what to wear like they are in kindergarten. Worry about you and move on with life. This shouldn’t be a big deal.
