Why would I give up BHM because somebody at NBC made a crude joke about it? They are a network in decay these days. I wouldn’t give up BHM because somebody made a racially charged joke about it. White people eat just as much fried chicken as anybody else, so let the hypocrites have their laugh. Meanwhile, I am going to study about Bass Reeves, the first black Deputy US Marshal west of the Mississippi River.

@shenandoahOK the problem is, NBC wasn’t joking, they were dead serious. They really thought that’s what BHM was “truly” about. Obviously there is and has been a serious disconnect for a very long time. Next thing, why do you need to have a special month put aside for YOU to recognize your own history? Lastly, are you really studying black history, or the history of slaves within the context of American white history??

@Carlettoone…Not sure who you’re directing that to, but just in case you’re including me, I never once said anything about the sign being racist. I’m not even mad about it. You’re right, racism is still alive and well, and this is just a sign as to how prevalent it really is. To me, this is just an eye opener who is still under the influence of that post racial opiate, the media has been dealing!

This menu posted at NBC, yes is in ‘honor’ of BHM..AND it was a menu prepared by the BLACK EMPLOYEES at the station..Another thing is..how can this be racist when this is what black people eat?? I’m from the south and this is what the people there eat, im sure as well as other parts of the country. So if it was racist, then the black people that typed it up, copied the menu, passed it out, posted it and COOKED THE FOOD are..well…..racist…

If Blacks did put that up, then yes, they are the products of a whitewashing of the mind and to quote our brother Maatra are now part of the negropean culture. I have no issue with people eating fried chicken or collared greens (I personally don’t eat either because for one, I’m a vegetarian, and two, collard greens are notoriously difficult on the digestive system from what I have read) as a meal, but to somehow “reduce” what is supposed to be an awareness month, down to that level, to me is crazy. From the Pyramids to the projects! So instead of posting literature of our abundantly rich history (pre slavery), they chose to honor it with chicken and collared greens?.lol…I don’t know sister, something just seems real off with that to me.

All race of people eat what was on the menu as for the racist part I really don’t see it there but they left off alot of things that really went with the frid chicken like(HM) macaroni & cheese,green beans,fried corn,potato salad,corn bread,topped off with some home maded pies. Ok, I see where you are coming from, and I cant really speculate on their mindset for the menu. But black history to me entails EVERYTHING, from clothing style, to education, milestones, good points, bad points, the people throughout history as well as the food that is essentially associated with black people. I dont think the menu ‘reduced’ the culture as a whole and I dont think it that means we are feeding into the ‘negropean’ thing either (I mean really, who would white folks even be without US??). Bottomline it is a part of the culture and this menu was just a small, minute part of who we are as a whole, yet and still a part of. Personally I would have been a little like “WTF?!” If the menu would have showcased lobster tails, halibut, caviar, pickled beets and hawaiian rolls…

THAT’S IT RIGHT THERE CALIFEMME23! You know that, I know that and selected few of us know it as well but outside of us, you will be hard pressed to find others outside of our people who feel that way. Why is that?? Well for one thing, the focus is purposely skewed. For the most part, entertainers, athletes, politicians, Civil rights leaders and a few inventors sprinkled in here and there seems to be the primary focus. Little or no mention of the TRUTH of our story. WE are the fathers of Mathematics, Science and Medicine, not the Greeks, yet you tell that to any white person and many of our own people and they will laugh at you to your face. The thought of that is so foreign to the commonly and popular held views of us, that we don’t even teach it ourselves. So instead of those things being used “in honor of BHM” you get smoked turkey, collard greens, Mac&Cheese etc. Do we really have to wonder why Greek Letters are worn with such pride by these Frats. And you remember your epic battle a month ago with about 4 or 5 of them trying to go in on you (and you held your own magnificently might I add) who were not only trying to dismiss the hazing as isolated incidents, but were vigourously defending their use of Greek letters. See, they are trying to defend the indefensible. They have no idea what the mindset of those who started these organizations were. But the clues are glaring. For instance, can you imagine a Jewish frat getting started, using Chinese letters as their symbols? How about a Chinese group? What’s your guess on how many of them would use any African symbols to rep their group? What letters do the white groups use?? hmm… Who knows if the founder of these black frats were even black. How many of OUR people know that the founders of the NAACP (RIP) were NOT black, let alone white people? We just continue on the same destructive path, without ever breaking the cycle, it’s no wonder our community and the problems that exist NEVER seem to change. I said all of that to say that if we are going to take a month and call it black history, let’s make it count. The foods we eat are part of our culture, but history should be a full accounting of all our contributions to the onward progress of civilization anything less than that is lying by omission. A wise person recently said to me “(I mean really, who would white folks even be without US??). ” I say lets get that thought out there, we are much much much more, than Mac&cheese!

Lets sidetrack 2 growing up during our lives and gettin the same old repetitive BHM TV shows, Radio (Music), Educational Curriculum & I will go back 2 the TV shows that are re-rerunned OVER & OVER & OVER….I mean, what kind of young mind would become either fearful or angry when they rerun the Civil Rights programs they flood the stations with…I was and still am angered at what I viewed…I never considered that I would/can become a victim 2 the sensationalized syndrome that people always recite “well, what else can you do? this is a white mans world” or other insensitive ideaological repressive quotes we have heard while growin up around our people. It cast doubt 2 be submissive within the constrains of this Society, and this was done by my OWN PEOPLE the damage is xtroardinary 2 say the least.

WE MUST REKINDLE OUR CULTURE!! the children now-a-days are being led into the abyss by their own! “you either slang rocks or got a wicked jump shot” or Dance!! this dance phenomenom is counter-productive and we are not generating OUR youth on a global scale 2 encompass the Business/Social/Economical scheme of things(Economical more than others)…..BHM is somewhat complacent but it has always been and so many other fields of growth are 2.
We do not have a Majority of OUR folk becoming more than “WHAT IS” we have much work 2 do. I pray we all get an alarm so that we can share our awakening wholeheartedly

Interesting points Mr_Nanastroker. I agree wholeheartedly about these various doc**entaries that do nothing but breed anger or in some cases, sadness. Where is the inspiration? I guess some people can derive inspiration from these emotions, but to me it just keeps us in this perpetual state of trying to be accepted. Not talking about our truly great history is intentional. It goes back to the first slaves that were brought here, and having their children taken away, so they weren’t able to tell the tales of their true history. The slave master was then able to control what that child saw and heard, which would forever influence his thinking and behavior. This is still in full effect! We get spoon fed hours of Marching on Selma, or boycotts in Montgomery, or sit ins at Woolworth’s etc. Your minds parameters are subliminally tagged (good definition) with a spirit of constant struggle, and a “keep your eye on the prize” and “a change gon come” mentality. I have no problem with those thoughts, as long as the “prize” and the “change” are truly constructive. If the desired result is to just be accepted, or treated fairly and equally then its a waste of time, because right now an overwhelming majority of white people feel as if these things already happen, and some think the pendelum has swung too much in our favor. But in actuality, the line of thinking is so limited if you understand what we are truly capable of. I used to be one of these “keep hope alive” “I have a dream” guys back in HS because I had no knowledge of who we once were. When I began to find out, the thought naturally occurred to me, that we don’t have to settle for mere acceptance. Our history beyond these shores are filled with people who have shaped all these things that we marvel at today from space travel, to architecture, to navigation, flying etc. The same spirit that contributed to that, runs through us. We need to understand this, then tap into it, or we will always be wondering, when is this change actually “gon come” That change will only come from within, not through some new Bill, law or amendment. A paradigm shift with respect to how we view ourselves, our history and our culture is needed more so today in this so called post racial era, than at any other time.

I must say I agree. BHM should be more than the ‘same ole stuff’ WE have been seeing for ages. The big question is…Why dont WE ‘praise’ or teach about ourselves during the other LONGER 11 months out the year? We only seem to ‘getty up’ during this one month when one month can not encompass our entire history especially when the ONLY thing our children learn about is MLK,R Parks and Malcolm-X. Talking to my daughters (elem school aged), the schools ONLY push the ‘struggle,civil rights era/slavery’ days. They dont teach them about our true beginnings. (I digress, that is solely MY job I see). I am personally disgusted by the ‘holiday box’ way in which we are respresented. (You know the holiday box with those decorations you only pull out for that day and they are the SAME old decorations every year!). Im sorry but MY history means more to me than that of ‘jesus’ birthday’…

i think the problem is some black people are ashamed of what they eat. you should be happy to share a small aspect of our culture to other people. i dont think mexican americans would be upset their food is being represented . all of black culture dont have to repond around music or activism.

Yes Miss Femme23…I knew we were on the same wave length here. I probably did a bad job articulating the point properly, but deep down, I KNEW you understood what I was “trying” to say. And all these people talking about “racism” this and what we should be doing etc. fail to realize, that the reason why we have so many young black boys dropping out of schools and joining gangs is because the system is actually working. They don’t realize that they are acting in accord with their programming. Listen people, you have to understand, in order for a system like capitalism to function properly, you need a permanent underclass. There are people who don’t want to do the heavy lifting or get their hands dirty, therefore many have to be “steered” into the unskilled labor pool. What do you think would happen if every black person in this country were to obtain a Masters degree in something meaningful? You would have a bunch of Master degree’d employees at McDonald’s, KFC and BK. The system isn’t designed to accomodate everyone, and with those on the top being hell bent on owning abundantly more than they need, it makes the underclass population, that more plentiful. Look at how many degree’d folks are unemployment now during this time of recession, or as economists like to call, a correction. We just had the housing bubble burst, which led to the credit bubble bursting as well after years of unheard of, rapid growth. The question is, is this corrective period actually the norm? In other words, is 20% of the people unemployed really all this current system can handle? With no innovative sectors of the economy on the horizon, it looks that way!

Ok Back in the days the “White People” ate the same food because it was prepared by the “Negros” There are more important things to focus on instead of something like food. There is no label that says only one race can eat this food.
