From LIFE.com:

On April 4, 1968, LIFE photographer Henry Groskinsky and writer Mike Silva, on assignment in Alabama, learned that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., had been shot at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis. They raced to the scene and there, incredibly, had unfettered access to the hotel grounds, Dr. King’s room, and the surrounding area. For reasons that have been lost in the intervening years, the photographs taken that night and the next day were never published. Until now.

i see so many folks post comments about so many other topics that really dont seem to have any importance at all and yet something like this has no comments. this is a intriguing piece and even after 41 years the pictures seems to take you back to that very sad day and its puts you in a somber mood as if you go back in time and your standing in that same spot and seeing this should really mke folks want to change for the better so his dream can come true and he havent lost his life in vain .

I want to know why this pic is just now being published. I don’t blame people for not posting it, but he had about 40 anniversaries since this went down and at times, more seemed more significant than others, but they never thought to post it? Why does it seem important now; because we have a black prez? No one else wouldn’t have cared right?

how can people comment 1000+ times on garbage that doesnt even deserve to be recognized? despite the circ**stances these pictures should resurface all the struggles we had to endure to get to where we are now

The reason these photos should be released is simple: It just “slapped me across the damn face with reality”

Since his death nearly 81,000,000 people have been born in the U.S. which means they only know of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. via history books.

My 5th history teacher just happened to be black and when discussing MLK you could see the passion/pain in the discussion. (He re-lived those moments)

People who say why just now release those photos…imagine the impact if new JFK photos in Dallas were to pop-up it would dominate tv coverage for CNN, MSNBC, FOXNews etc.. for atleast a entire week.

Yes I do think that he purposely timed these photos to be released in correlation to a BLACK PRESIDENT in office. Ironically Dr. King was only a few years off in his prediction of one… (cold shivers)

Well, i think lots of black athletes who are making money should look at this picture and think what if “I wasnt allow to be”.
the best way to hear such stories is through the mouth of those who did walk can talk the issue. I had the opportunity to talk to someone who was 17 at the time and in his word, he would never go back to the south. Let me say that he was living in brooklyn, New york.

Some of us are lucky. This picture should remind us what was then, what is it today and what we need to do in times to come

It is a shame more has not commented on this as opposed to the other worthless articles that have numerous of comments. Pictures of King will never be outdated and are as welcomed by the public if permission is given by the family. More education of this type is needed, because blacks nowadays have forgotten that the blessings that we have today were not given easily and she be glorified and appreciated. To God Be The Glory.

Reparations, Reparations, Reparations…Reparations should not just be for the times that black people were in slaved but also for slavery under a different name , genocide, racism etc..that the picture of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. represents today. That Turkish reporter doing black face in this day and age and the other countries even America that won’t let us heal and move forward ever time we want to change and move to the future they pull out these picture and the black face to remind us of how they see things.

My Dad was the bodyguard (police escort) of Coretta Scott King when she came to Maryland years ago. He said she even took the time to eat dinner with him over his house afterwards. He has the picture on the wall of his house to prove it. It’s really good that people want to see picture from the passed but why would they have the time of when he was killed and not pictures of the journey that led up to that day also. I think it’s to keep hatred in our hearts but remember he marched with white people that believed in the same dream and I believe there were other races in that march and movement as well don’t forget that. The dream is for the entire human race and there for we should move forward as a people to make sure that even if we don’t live to see that dream come true (Martin Luther King Jr. didn’t) it would one day is reality. As for those racist people all across the globe yes we should be rewarded some monetary value for the damages that you’ve don’t to the black race. Especial that black face of today. Call it reparations or another name but just like you paid the Jews pay us!
If Obama and any other President doesn’t see that these acts of hatred is for a race that was enslaved and decades after slavery was over is still being mad to feel ashamed because of their hair texture and skin and that our hair is different then other races then he and other leaders shouldn’t be getting involved with other country issues of genocide.
