A newborn is in a hospital, but healthy, after being found abandoned in a shoebox in the lobby of a Long Island apartment building.

A resident discovered the baby girl Sunday night.

Nassau County Police medic Timothy Jaccard (Jah-KAHRD’) says he fed the baby and took her to Nassau University Medical Center. He says she’s “in very good shape.”

The Hempstead building lobby is not a safe haven. The city’s safe haven law allows babies to be left within five days of birth at a police station, firehouse or hospital.

Jaccard is president of the AMT Children of Hope Foundation/Baby Safe Haven Program.

He says the baby is Hispanic and weighs about 5.7 pounds. She was wearing a “onesie” and was wrapped in a blanket and shirt.

Sign of the times; this child’s mother is probably somewhere regretting her decision right now. She’s probably a frightened teen, or suffers from post-partum depression(baby blues). She may have even panicked, because she’s wondering how she’ll afford to care for the child. Not everyone has a kid for a check. I have kids, and I know how scary it can be to think of having to raise them on your own. The father is probably LONG gone, and doesn’t care about his child or the mother, so there’s no hope of any kind of support, financial or otherwise. Sad that everyone here posted comments attacking this child’s mother without knowing her side, at least. I notice that about this society, though. We tend to be harsher on females than we are on males; even if we come down on men for their shortcomings, we try to justify the wrong at the same time. We have to teach our men how to be men, by first teaching them to accept responsibility for their actions. This child has a father too; his lack of support probably played a pivotal role in determining the fate of his baby. He’s as much to blame as the mother. He abandoned his kid, just like she did.

There was only one intelligent comment on here today other than mine and for those of you that continue reading this you will know which person left it. First of all the safe haven law allows a child be left at a church, hospital, or firehouse within five days in the hopes that they can prevent a child dying needlessly. In the past and still today a lot of babies are left to die in garbage cans, wooded areas, etcetera. The safe haven law prevents these needless deaths and allows for a baby to be available for adoption to someone who really wants it. Secondly why are people attacking the mom. You dont know if her or the dad left the baby. You dont know that she is a dirty hoe as someone put it or what were the circ**stances behind her becoming pregnant. she could be a young girl of 11 who was raped for all you know. Society is so harsh on women and lax on these men. I am quite certain as a mommy to be in a few days that it was not easy for this girl or woman if it was the mom to abandon her child. It is really hard not to love someone who grows in you for 40 weeks. As for te person leaving the baby in a shoe box maybe they had no carrier or anything better to put the baby in, and true they did leave the baby but she was left where she could be found. I actually feel the safe haven law should state that a child should be left where they can be quickly found within 7 days of birth. Also to the person who feels marriage can solve all the issues of having a baby. Go get married and then tell me how a married man can react just as bad as a boyfriend or 1 night stand to a pregnancy. Marriage does not guarantee security boo.

It is sad to see that today times warrant such actions! Embrase this situation positively! The child was left in a place whwlere she could be found immediately, and is now safe. After all who are we as a society to cast the first stone at this woman? Ask your self have you ever made a hard or harsh decision in your life that could be looked at by others as something simple? Let’s try to keep this in perspective my people! Thank God for that childs safety at this point…. The rest of the speculating can and should be left to athorities! Y’all take care!

i am glad that the baby survived. it is a shame that this is what our world is coming to. i am a mother and i could never imagine doing that to my child no matter how tough
times got, and trust me when i say i have been through a lot. hopefully the mother will be able to get her life together and claim her child. someone in the world has to know who the mother is. i cant understand how you can carry a baby for 9 mths and this is the only choice that you think you have. there are so many women that can not have children for whatever reasons and i am pretty sure they would have loved to have been able to adopt that child. LORD BLESS US ALL!!!!!!!
