From the New York Times

The achievement gap between white and minority students has not narrowed in recent years, despite the focus of the No Child Left Behind law on improving the scores of blacks and Hispanics, according to results of a federal test considered to be the nation’s best measure of long-term trends in math and reading proficiency.

Between 2004 and last year, scores for young minority students increased, but so did those of white students, leaving the achievement gap stubbornly wide, despite President Bush’s frequent assertions that the No Child law was having a dramatic effect.

Although Black and Hispanic elementary, middle and high school students all scored much higher on the federal test than they did three decades ago, most of those gains were not made in recent years, but during the desegregation efforts of the 1970s and 1980s. That was well before the 2001 passage of the No Child law, the official description of which is “An Act to Close the Achievement Gap.”

Look at the classrooms, books, lack of computers, crumbling schools and lack of good teachers for blacks and white schools. Now who is left behind?

well ya gotta look at it fo wut it iz: it wuz actually intended ta increase da overall achievement of students, not keep white students where they are and only improve scores of non-whites. da other way bein “leave all whites behind an run like hell”. now datta close da gap! but then white parents wud prolly cry foul cuzza “reverse” discrimination. well ya cant win em all rite? da other iz y dont da white students tutor black or latino students? did dey like cancel da tutor program when dey made “evra non-white child left behind”? datz wut it shud b called cuz datz wutz been happnin so far. an dey say segregation iz over. HA! dey cudnt b mo wrong if dey tryed. only insteda skoolz bein 1 race per buildin itz segregation of lernin thru minorityz not gettin da help dey need like da whites do. s**t, itz bad enuff studentz only wanna b frendz wit dey own race. it wuz like big blotchez a kulluhz away from 1 anotha like a big prejudice paintin canvas. i donno if dat got s**t ta wit po skorez or not but it mite.

why do we blacks blame our problems on other’s? why do black parents blame they child’s failure on schools? if u don’t teach ur child home training and moral instructions, don’t expect the govt to come to ur rescue. am black, an volunteer soccer coach and trust me, there’s a great difference in morals and attitude between white kids and black. i feel disappointed most times cause u see these blacks kids, they will not listen, will have stupid attitude and there parents will be there looking, and to be honest that’s totally opposite of white kids and parents.

I would rather be left behind than pushed on thru with failing grades, teach my youth…..teachers these days are young, stupid, and just more elaborate babysitters.

In my city our hispanic/black high school, students are not allowed to have books to take home, or lockers to put books in anymore!! Books are to be used in classrooms only. WTF??? How do they expect students to learn if they can’t refer to their books after school or on weekends? I’m fighting a battle that not every parent has caught onto yet, and its gonna take more than just me to get the message out there. But get this, my nephew goes to a prodominately white school, and all the kids get books, and lockers to put them in too. I guess living in Texas we’re still being “Left Behind”.

wow, i like the different viewpoint on this topic. i can see the argument behind most of the comments on here and agree with some of them but at the end of the day i don’t believe we should be blaming our problems on others, i think we should work collectively towards solving them. i went to “D” level schools up until my senior year of high school before transferring to an “A” level (majority white)high school. there was a significant difference in the approach to education, standards, and quality of teachers. People like to complain about schools and teachers but how many of those complaining ass people pursue jobs in that field?(education or education administration) not many, so the problem continues to grow and all we do is complain and blame.

My son was pushed thru elementary. I went to school got my license for teaching. Got him to the 7th grade level. put him back in school. They passed him with D’s He said the work was too easy so Imade him repeat the grade. the teacher was mad at me. When he got to another school, They told him he would have to repeat the 11th grade, Because he was homeschooled and they needed proof that he could do the work. He went up to the board and showed the teacher how to do a problem in Algebraic equasions and showed her the 5 step and 3 step way. She said he was disrupting the class… She didn’t think he knew. But someone up there said something i been saying all along for years, I have been upsetting teachers for calling them glorified babysitters and daycare workers. I can sit on my kids my self. And I can Teach them, I am Oklahoma Certified. But Homeschooling when you are the only breadwinner is hard. U do 7 hours in the class room and 8 hours on the job. Do you really feel like anything else except sleep the last 9 hours? Where do u spend friendship time with ur kids, or go on a date? especially if you work another job on the weekend? u dont, or u send the kids back into public school just to hear them tell you o that child has to repeat this grade because u dont feel he is qualified?
