UPDATE: NAACP Responds to Murdock’s Apology

We welcome Rupert Murdoch’s statement that the New York Post will endeavor to be more sensitive to the communities it serves, but unfortunately his apology fails to answer how the Post will do so. Mr. Murdoch could resolve this unfortunate situation in 15 minutes by meeting to develop substantive measures to ensure that this type of incendiary incident does not happen again.

Mr. Murdoch’s apology comes only after almost a week of tens of thousands of expressions of outrage and disgust from people across the country. The offenders are still on staff and there are no measures being taken to increase diversity in its newsroom. The apology from Mr. Murdoch is sadly too little, too late and we call on Mr. Murdoch to take the steps needed to assure that the New York Post can practice more responsible journalism and truly be sensitive to its community, in the future.

The New York Post and Fox News have a history of racially insensitive reporting. With the support of the editor in chief, the cartoonist Sean Delonas has published numerous vile cartoons tinged with racism.   Fox News was widely criticized during the elections for calling Michelle Obama “Obama’s baby mama” and terming the affectionate and common fist bump between then-candidate Obama and his wife, a “terrorist fist jab” at a time when death threats against the candidate were at an all time high for any presidential candidate.

The New York Post stands alone from most daily newspapers in refusing to report its diversity numbers to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. One has to wonder how many Hispanic or African American reporters and editors are working at the New York Post? Clearly, with more diversity in its newsrooms, it’s likely the paper would have been able to understand the deeply offensive nature of the cartoon. Our guess is that the numbers are abysmally low for a newspaper serving a city with a population as diverse as New York.

It is hard not to interpret the cartoon, which was juxtaposed to a photo of President Obama, as an encouraging sign to those who would assassinate our 44th president because of the color of his skin.  The depiction of two police officers shooting down the primate is deeply troubling to communities who struggle daily with suspicious police killings. The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) has also condemned the cartoon calling it “despicable, insensitive and easily interpreted as racist.” Good police officers all around the country should be dismayed by this slur on their character. African Americans have historically been compared to primates as a way to dehumanize the entire group.  We were called monkeys while we were being brutally lynched and denied equal civil and human rights.  In fact,  a 2008 study published by the American Psychological Association found that an association between primates and African Americans still exists among many white Americans.

UPDATE: Rupert Murdoch Apologizes for Post Cartoon 2/24/09

Here is Rupert Murdoch’s statement on the Post Cartoon

As the Chairman of the New York Post, I am ultimately responsible for what is printed in its pages. The buck stops with me.

Last week, we made a mistake. We ran a cartoon that offended many people. Today I want to personally apologize to any reader who felt offended, and even insulted.

Over the past couple of days, I have spoken to a number of people and I now better understand the hurt this cartoon has caused. At the same time, I have had conversations with Post editors about the situation and I can assure you – without a doubt – that the only intent of that cartoon was to mock a badly written piece of legislation. It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such.

We all hold the readers of the New York Post in high regard and I promise you that we will seek to be more attuned to the sensitivities of our community.

Let the New York Post know how you feel about their cartoon!

UPDATE:  NEW YORK – The head of the NAACP on Saturday urged readers to boycott the New York Post, calling a cartoon that the newspaper published an invitation to assassinate President Barack Obama.

Benjamin Todd Jealous, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, called on the tabloid to remove editor-in-chief Col Allan, as well as longtime cartoonist Sean Delonas.

Earlier this week, the newspaper apologized to anyone who might have been offended by the image printed Wednesday, which some say likens Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police in Connecticut.

Jealous said the cartoon was “an invitation to assassination.”

On Thursday, after protests by notable figures including director Spike Lee, the paper posted an editorial on its Web site saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but “to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.”

A spokeswoman for the newspaper referred The Associated Press to the paper’s editorial when asked Saturday about the proposed NAACP boycott.

Jealous called the editorial “a half of an apology, without elaboration.”

The drawing, he said, “picks off the scabs of all the racial wounds.”

He spoke as the NAACP gathered for its annual meeting in New York, where it was founded a century ago.

NAACP officials said that if the Post does not take “serious disciplinary action,” they would reach out to organizations across the country to join them in their efforts against the tabloid.

NAACP Chairman Julian Bond called the publication of the cartoon “thoughtlessness taken to the extreme. … Anyone who is not offended by it does not have any sensitivity.”

UPDATE: NY Post Apologizes, Sort Of, Feb 20, 2009

After two days of protests, the New York Post apologized Thursday for a cartoon that some have interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee gunned down by police. But the newspaper also said its longtime antagonists exploited the image for revenge.

The qualified apology didn’t mollify at least some of the cartoon’s critics, who said they might continue protesting Friday.

The newspaper posted an editorial on its Web site Thursday evening saying the cartoon was meant to mock the federal economic stimulus bill, but “to those who were offended by the image, we apologize.”

The piece was posted hours after 200 picketers chanting “Boycott the Post! Shut it down!” marched in front of the paper’s office, saying the cartoon echoed racist stereotypes of blacks as monkeys.

The editorial said that “most certainly was not its intent,” adding that some media and public figures who have long-standing differences with the paper saw the cartoon “as an opportunity for payback.”

Calling them “opportunists,” the editorial said: “To them, no apology is due.”

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who helped lead the outcry over the cartoon, criticized what he called the paper’s “conditional statement” of regret.

“Though we think it is the right thing for them to apologize to those they offended, they seem to want to blame the offense on those (who) raised the issue, rather than take responsibility for what they did,” he said in a statement.

The tabloid, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp., is known for its feisty attitude, provocative headlines and conservative outlook — a mix that has garnered hundreds of thousands of readers, but also criticism over the years.

The newspaper had stood by the cartoon, which its editor called “a clear parody” about the death of Travis, the chimp that Connecticut police killed Monday after it mauled a friend of its owner. Editor-in-chief Col Allan had said the intent was to ridicule Washington’s efforts to revive the economy.

The drawing by longtime Post cartoonist Sean Delonas, published Wednesday, shows a dead chimp and two police officers, one with a smoking gun. The caption reads, “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill.”

The Post was picketed and deluged with angry calls, with some of Thursday’s marchers carrying signs that said “Jail Billionaire N.Y. Post Owner Rupert Murdoch.”

“We make them and we break them with our money, and we should shut it down,” said protester Angela Brown, who carried a glossy photo of Obama.

Some protesters said the cartoon not only underscored racist tropes but even suggested that Obama should be shot.

“Since when can you call for the killing of the president of the United States?” demanded City Councilman Charles Barron.

Sharpton Rallies Against Cartoon At News Corp. Headquarters

Rev Al. Sharpton is speaking before a rally at News Corporation’s midtown-Manhattan headquarters, protesting the publication of a racist cartoon by News Corp’s newspaper, the New York Post.

Other Black public officials are attending in support of the protest. The diverse crowd of protesters, between 300-400 people, are holding signs that read, “Boycott Racist New York Post and Fox News” and “Racist Attacks are Crimes and Must Be Punished.”

A middle-aged white, male passer-by commented to a NewsOne correspondent, “They’ll march for anything.”

When pressed to describe who “they” were, the man explained: “All these Al Sharptons and racial arsonists.”

NEWS ONE CALL TO ACTION:

Reverend Al Sharpton and filmmaker Spike Lee have organized a protest against the New York Post newspaper for the paper’s “vile and shameful disrespect of President Barack Obama and the African-American community.”

Let us raise our voices on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 20TH, 5pm in front of the NY Post (1211 Avenue of the Americas, btw 46th & 47th streets) and be heard!

TOP 10 OFFENSIVE NEW YORK POST CARTOONS

Here is the New York Post’s Response to Al Sharpton

In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: “The cartoon is a clear parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy. Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity opportunist.”

Here is Al Sharpton’s response to the NY Post Cartoon from the National Action Network

New York, NY (February 18, 2009) –The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with monkeys. One has to question whether the cartoonist is making a less than casual inference to this form of racism when, in the cartoon, the police say after shooting a chimpanzee, “now they will have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill.”

Being that the stimulus bill has been the first legislative victory of President Barack Obama (the first African American president) and has become synonymous with him it is not a reach to wonder whether the Post cartoonist was inferring that a monkey wrote it? Given that the New York Post cartoonist has come under heavy fire in the past for racially tinged cartoons including the infamous cartoons depicting 2001 mayoral candidate Freddy Ferrer and me in very unflattering ways (that ultimately was used as a campaign tactic to inflame racial prejudices), one cannot ignore that history when looking at this morning’s cartoon.

The Post should at least clarify what point they were trying to make in this cartoon, and reprimand their cartoonist for making inferences that are offensive and divisive at a time the nation struggles to come together to stabilize the economy if, in fact, this was yet another racially charged cartoon.

From The Huffington Post:

A cartoon likening the author of the stimulus bill, perhaps President Barack Obama, with a rabid chimpanzee graced the pages of the New York Post on Wednesday.

The drawing, from famed cartoonist Sean Delonas, seems rife with racial and political sensitivities. In it, two befuddled-looking police officers holding guns look over the dead and bleeding chimpanzee that attacked a woman in Stamford, Connecticut.

I do not think it was an attack on the president. For those who do not know about the chimpanzee who mauled the woman the other day he is known to be able to write as one of his many talents. It was his most well known talent. I am going to have to agree with the paper that this one got twisted. We are so quick to think everything is racist that we chose to look pass the obvious. So many are quick to think they were calling Obama a monkey when in fact the cartoon was stating that the chimp was the brain behind the stimulus packet. We are going to have to stop making everything out of race. It is a cop out.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CocoaCarolina/ CocoaCarolina

It’s underlying racism that has been going on ever since and after the Civil Rights movement…just like people said racism was dead then, they said it would die with a black president. BUT no, it just becomes more abstract. People hate, dislike, discriminate and they will continue! H*** it goes on inside our own race, no diff! Never under estimate a cartoonist ability to try and slip a sutle hint of racism. I for one a cartoonist. Quit giving the media credit for what has been obvious for so many years. Of course it’s not totally the artist fault its the editor for not understanding the racism as well as the publisher for publishing such a degrading cartoon. Its also our fault for not seeing through their tactics as we continue to feed and digest the content of such racist journalism.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Reesha85/ Reesha85

No. It’s not racism…monkeys are historically looked at as stupid and primitive. Didn’t they make Bush look like a monkey/donkey the whole time he was in office…and they used his face! We need to stop being on the offensive sometimes…

i’m an artist and this is racist… if you guys are blind… then be blind… but this is racism… and trust me… i don’t agree with all al says, but this is definitely racism. They made fun of bush, yes… but 1 out of all of white america who has been compared in terms of looks, does not compare to the numerous blacks who have been compared as a result of them feeling that we are ignorant and primitive… in addition, it directly addresses the stimulus bill, which is in a strong attempt to be passed by obama, who is african american, so anyone denouncing this as racism is a fool… this is a clear attempt at subliminal messaging and a way to voice racism without directly taking the blunt of the criticism… this is racism with a scapegoat…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jazzy-KD/ Jazzy-KD

Although they did make bush look like a monkey using his face while he was in office… thats because he had big ears and he did look like a monkey (no offense)… I dont look at everything as racist… However although we could look deeper at this, this cartoon speaks high volumes of racism and prejudice… Two white cops killing a monkey is a symbol of civil rights when cops called blacks monkeys and killed them… a thing called lynching (killing without trial)…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/LIIthium/ LIIthium

Wow. I think anyone who agrees with this as not being racist has to look at the big picture. If A noose is now a clear symbol of racism due to the hanging of thousands of black people in the U.S, how is the comparison of a monkey and Obama not? Just like the swatstika is a no no when used to mention Jews. Everyone knows you have to be responsible when mentioning monkeys and Black people ever since the Warner Brother and other dehumanizing themes in the 1930s and up. Artists have to be more responsible too especially when creating racist comparisons in Newspapers. “The New York Post” people!!!!

I believe that this was a tasteless act as well as disrespectful. However, let’s not give ignorance attention by being upset. I have learned the best way to shut people up is to not act out and give them attention. Just ignore it. Now, if Barack wants to be upset that is one thing, because it was clearly about him and that is personal. Someone being disrespectful and racist is never right but unfortunately people will be who they are. No matter how terrible.

Well my folks after speaking with some other people I kinda believe this was a ill attempt to make fun of the lady who recently got attacked by her chimpanzee. Now what that has to do with the stimulus bill, I’m not sure.

But on another note. If we don’t feed into this stuff, they have nothing to go on. Do you get my point? The more we act like this stuff doesn’t bother us and we are better than this the more frustrated they will get. I’m not saying don’t speak on racism or injustice. But learn to pick your battles.

A cartoon such as this is nothing more than the trend of ignorance plaguing our nation. Sometimes things such as the cartoons are designed (in my opinion) to see how far they can go in causing strife and confusion. You can see the artists beliefs and stereotypes throughout the cartoon: (1) he has no respect for the Government and the highest position in our United States; (2) He has no concerned of the welfare for the millions of suffering Americans (of all ethnicities) which the Stimulus Bill will eventually assist; (3) He views white policemen as legalized murders, racists, and animal rights violators; and (4) He has no respect for the New York Post, one of the leading and most popular read items in the United States. I also question the individual(s) who permitted such a cartoon to be posted.

To portray a killed chimpanzee is a mockery in itself, even if the artist somehow attempts to evade the cartoon’s true intent. The Chimpanzee had to be killed because he mauled a human being. What the artist failed to realize in his cartoon is that he also portrays white police as “legalized” killers and racists, so my fellow readers, let’s look past the ignorance of cartoonist such as this and ask the New York Post are they condoning contempt for the Government, racial, and inhumane animal treatment?

Maybe the N.Y. Post should terminate the artists’ employment and let him feel the effects of those who the stimulus bill will eventually aid; at least he’ll have a better appreciation for President Obama. Let him stroll the streets of New York or the city he lives in, searching and eating discarded food like a stray animal (Chimpanzee) and treated like such by those passing and mocking him. Let’s see if he gets harassed by white cops while he strolls on the streets. Maybe then he’ll learn to appreciate the things we so enjoy here in America, and even learn a bit more about the freedom of speech we enjoy which shouldn’t be taken for granted or exploited.

The artists and others like him need to get over the fact we have a black President; that it’s a done deal, and they need to move on with their lives and stop pouting like spoiled brats. The country has proven itself; we are better than racism and can look beyond those idiotic beliefs. To all those who choose to embrace racism, remember this, African-Americans did not voluntarily come to this country, it was Caucasians who exploited my forefathers and took them against their will to this nation. You should be upset with your ancestors. Now that we’re here, we have just as much right to this land that your ancestors exploited and stole from the Native Americans. You are the problem here in America, not those you hate and exploit.

    LOVE,

    T. J.

This is a pretty strong statement and I think that it’s very naive of people to say “ignore it” and it will go away…

yeah that’s how we as a people got freedom…. by just ignoring the oppression. No! We’ve come as far as we have by not ignoring problems and by facing them head on and calling people out.

I think that’s it good that the Post got called out for this ad. They simply used the whole chimapanzee shooting as a free pass to make a racist cartoon.

    I think it’s horrible.

The symbolism of it all relates to the 1940′s degrading of blacks as primates(we were called apes, gorillas and baboons in an open manner those days) and the cops making the statement of having someone else write the next stimulus bill is a blatant attack on president obama and nothing else. I was totally shocked and appalled by this degrading illustration that really shows how we are looked at as a people. It just laid back a little to see how far we could climb up the ladder before they either shoot us down or use the media to do it. As long as the non Black ma has the largest part of power and wealth in this country there will always be racism. But the guy counters a rebuttal against his assumption that President Obama was elected by Whites’ and non Whites who got him where he is now. It was all nations that got Obama where he is now. I don’t understand the shock and disbelief of some on this post. Do you not know the depraved nature of these people? Read history….they mistreated each other. Do you not understand it has nothing to do with you being “black”? It is because you are a “human”(man with a hue). They are “humankind” or “mankind”(kinda like a man). Understand this and pay attention to words. You will not take it personaly. All of thier depraved actions are not directed at “people of color”. Look at how they cannot live in harmony with nature. Look at how they treat the earth. You think your mad? How do you think God feels?? Never forget that these people come from caves. That is the beginning of thier history. Read history. Once you do, you will not take it personally. Don’t be offended by “monkey” comments from them. A monkey has big ears, thin lips, hairy, pale skin, flat azz and very close eyes. Between you and them….they look just like a damn monkey. Don’t forget the red dot in thier eyes. The same red dot you see in dogs, monkeys and other animals. Don’t get upset about this mess. Remember you are dealing with an angry race of people. Angry with God. Angry with everyone and everything. They feel slighted. How would you feel if everything in the world had color but you?

The only thing that white folks understand is the power of the dollar. It has long been my position that we have lost the discipline of our fathers and grandfathers. We have forgotten the lessons they have taught us. the bus boycotts of Alabama worked because the powers that be were losing money. they didn’t cave in because it was the right thing to do. It was an economic reason that drove their decision to change their policy on blacks on buses. Now here we are again the NY Post is basically saying, hey lighten up it was a joke we didn’t mean anything by it.
Here in Philly these young cats don’t respect police. Brotha’s have killed at least 6 officers in the last year alone. They realize that they are not respected by our police officers and fire back without hesitation. I say that to say this. If I drew a cartoon that showed a police officer splayed out with bullet wounds, and the caption read “I guess they will have to get someone else to arass the neighborhood.” (Remember Ice-T’s Cop Killer)I would recieve death threats and worse, true harassment, lose my job, have trouble finding another. The National media would get to it and I would be vilified from coast to coast (by white folks and docile blacks). But that is not my way I will speak with my dollar. I am not sure who the publisher is for the NY post but I am sure that they have an affiliated news paper here in the Philadelphia area and I will let my dollar speak for me. I will not spend my money on any affiliated newspaper or affiliated newsgroup.
My name is Fred Hallmon and I approve this rant

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Blackdogg6/ Blackdogg6

I have to agree with BlaQue-Eye.
As a fellow Philadelphian, I too will speak with my dollar. That cartoon was just down right degrading. And yes, with all of the cop killings in our beloved city. If we were to post something like that on a newspaper, magazine or even on youtube. The backlash would be endless. We as a race of people need to fight this thing with dignity and keep in mind that the only thing that can effect this organization or company is to hit them in the wallet. It work for my parents , with the late Dr. King. Some old tactics still have an impact.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/A_Champ/ A_Champ

This is the bitter “Irony” of the black people. It’s totally ok for black people to say “cracka this and cracka that”; its ok for Dave Chapelle to dawn a white man costume and stereotype; or when every black comedian has a joke a about a white family and how they live their day to day lives. But then a cartoon is drawn and it’s complete mayhem. This is why we can’t propel forward, its a very childish way of thinking that we as blacks hold on to. We make fun of other races and their mannerisms but we can’t take it ourselves. all of a sudden everyone is part of the NAACP.This is a traditional problem with black people, we can’t take what we dish out. now we are all in an uproar. Was the cartoon racist? I’m inclined to say yes since obama is the president. But we along with many other take the power away form his title as president. why must we say the first black president all the time. At the end of the day he is the President of the united States. Not just a black president. in the end there will be no separate column in our countries history for black presidents unless we make it.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ROCKASAVO/ ROCKASAVO

“It broadly mocks Washington’s efforts to revive the economy.”
Is that their answer? What’s their answer to the innuendo that the cop in the cartoon thought the chimpanzee was Barack Obama? It wasn’t a group of chimpanzee’s to signify it was congress.. It was one.. Why would they even put something that would remotely suggest that?.. BAN The NEW YORK POST!!!!!

I agree that this cartoon was blatantly racist and deserves a call to action against an obviously low class news outlet like the NY Post. I just this morning gave my last few dollars to a caucasion vietnam vet who is homeless and out of work and then I read this nonsense about our president. As I’ve said time and time again when they take the time to degrade and disrespect an intelligent person like President Obama, they should look back over the last eight years and realize a chimpanzee could have probably done as good a job as “not to curious George Bush and his administration. The folks at the ny post are idiots and should be boycotted until the issue a formal apology.

I just can’t believe what i saw when I first saw this. Any one that does not think that this is racism and lets a person print this is an idiot, they need to be thrown under the bus. Is this what society has to deal with for the rest of our lives, what is this teaching our children? Nothing but more racism. The newsmaper or magazine that printed this need to be put out of business if possible. If not them we as a ppl need not but their product.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Idratherbeme/ Idratherbeme

Any conversation debating whether or not this cartoon is racist is ridiculous. OF COURSE it’s racist…that’s not the issue. The issue is whether or not, as black people, we are being overly sensitive by responding the way most of us have. I don’t think we’re being sensitive at all. Calling us sensitive about things of this nature is the same thing as calling us “uppity” 50 years ago. Not only should we not accept this type of mockery but white, brown and all people should speak out about it as well. After electing the first African American President, this type of insult under the guise of journalism or harmless topical humor is simply unacceptable and the minute we’re not sensitive (or “uppity”) to this callous behavior, we give permission to racially charged insults and demeaning “harmless” humor. We take a step back in that case, not a leap forward which is what Obama’s election should symbolize globally for race relations. And to those who compare this cartoon to black comedians making fun of stereotypes….c’maaaaaan! You sound way to intelligent for that type of comment. I never ONCE heard ANY black comedian compare anyone of a different race to what they deemed was a dirty, violent, disgusting animal!

Classic Example of RACISIM, but against “The President of the United States”.

Two white officers (Probably NYP) talking after shooting President Barack Obama, oh it wasn’t him it was the dead monkey they were depicting in that charature that did the stimulus bill. “Bulls**t”!!! White run media, in a white owned country assasinating the President, not his physical but his character. How Is IT Possible? We as black planet, which has more than black people on it, and other non bias media need to put an end to this. That’s one of the issues that the emblem on my default pic is about. Jackson and Lee are on the right page, I plan to attend

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jasemmie/ Jasemmie

The cartoonist Sean Delonas is wrong for this offensive cartoon and the New York Post for not reiterating or giving a clear explaination or apology for this cartoon, but, what we have to remember is that since we do have a black president there are a lot of people that do not agree or like that fact, so they feel like they have the right to express their freedom of speech to let out there racial agression’s, and like it or not, they have that right. Sean Delonas won’t loose his job for this because this isn’t the first racial cartoon that he has posted. America likes controversy, and I think that Mr. Delonas did this cartoon because he is a journalist and controversy is what makes the news.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/scaredoflove2/ scaredoflove2

Well i’m surprised that many people would refer to the cartoon as a racist picture. I mean media chooses it’s pictures very carefully to cause conflict in our society especially the post. Who really reads that high school drop out paper anyway. Only the dumming down american population. My comment on it is out of the box thinking I’m not falling for the “think the way I want you to think american mess” If the jouralist who choose that cartoon to mean something like black people come from chimps, monkeys or what ever cool atleast these primates think. they have been proven to be smarter then most humans. So if Obama was depicted as a chimp well a chimp is much smarter then an azz. and president bush was exactly that a azz didn’t they have bush as a jackass in the post. so the way i see it i take the chimp for 2 thousand alex because the only thing that comes out of a ass is s**t that is worthless. that was George Bush alright.

00 cracker, a licence to steal!

Why any black would be shocked by this is more amusing than the creators denying its racial intent.

The real question we should be asking, is why aren’t any of those stealing white males,in jail or been shot to death by white officers while attempting an arrest, thought they had a gun or being chased down by 900 cops on national TV and having the crap kicked out them when caught. The kind of things that would happen to you, if you’re caught stealing a loaf of bread to feed your family.

I say that the cartoon was not the proper thing to do. However, let’s not be quick to throw up the racist card. The same type of things were done to Bush. True, the cartoon is a terrible thing to put out but it would be the feeling about the article should be the same regardless of whether the president is black or white. I’m not unaware of the historical denigration of blacks as being monkeys. Nor was I unaware of the historical significance of the first legislation put forth by the first Black president. But I did NOT put that together in that cartoon. My first thought was that it referred to that tragic incident in Connecticut. The cartoon itself was actually kind of forgettable otherwise, in that the metaphor it presented was something of a stretch: did the monkey snap BECAUSE of having to write the stimulus bill? This is a case where we all lose by giving a lame joke much more clout and exposure than it deserves.

i’m getting sick and tired of people-white and black-pretending that racism doesn’t exist or that protesting is a waste of time. last time i checked, it was protesting that gave blacks the right to vote, it gave blacks the right to ride the bus and sit ANYWHERE, it gave blacks the right to equal education and we have a black president.. when black ppl like that ghetto chick at the bottom, say that they are tired of ppl protesting everything, it shows their lack of maturity and the fact that they think things are just given out to them… you have to work hard for respect in this country and considering that our ppl helped build this country, we have to work just that much harder.. dont take this lightly.. be pissed.. be mad.. make change and demand respect… but to blow it off and act like protesting will not help, you are not apart of the solution but apart of the problem.. and we will not have any of that.. protest anything that involves the NY Post.. its not right and i for one will not take it..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Jaahson1/ Jaahson1

Am I surprised by the cartoon? No. Surprised by some of our apathy towards or unwillingness to be angry about the racist depiction? No. Some of us are just afraid of a fight. Why shouldn’t we be upset? Why shouldn’t we protest and more importantly, boycott the Post and any of its affiliates? It’s time out for being just upset at a blatant disrespect of Us as people for a short while and then going back to sleep.

When the Jews felt that William Clay Ford’s book, “The International Jew”, was disrespectful of them, they united and did not buy another Ford until he made an apology. The dynamics of this attack on President Obama in particular, and Black people in general should not go unchallenged, and I support Al Sharpton and those with him.

In closing, remember the cartoon depicts the monkey AS Obama, so logically and mathematically: monkey = Obama. The monkey is killed in the cartoon and there are those who hate the fact that this Brother is the President of the U.S.A. Don’t go to sleep to the evil that lurks in a racist mind. You may say it’s a stretch, but I say history should not be thrown to side just because our Brother is now President. Peace.

Even though the NY Post has the right to have freedom of speech, the cartoon is excessive and they should have more sensitivity to know how to lessen racial stereotypes and issues in the country instead of heightening them.

black people listen to me family.i’ll make this some what short but i can write a book about these racist white people throughout the world especially here at home in america.white people see their days coming to an end with ruling and holding all of the power that is why they are so angry.most of them are uneducated and are use to favors giving to them with jobs, bank loans etc…. and the average white folks can not survive out here without playing their white color card and looking for a favor due to they can’t straight up get that high paying job,or they do not have that good credit to walk into the bank or should i say any bank and get a 100,000 loan so they go to a friend that has a friend that happens to be the underwriter of that bank and that is how these people survived for decades.well brothers and sisters the party is over and the rich white folks that own businesses want to make serious money and is’nt in the business to do anymore favors as they once did in the 70′s,80′s and 90′s because the 2000′s is no joke and they can not afford to lose money on hiring uneducated white folks as a favor to your mommy and daddy, they are’nt willing to take that lost anymore so who’s getting the top positions now the black man and the black educated women that will bring major endoursements to the company and they know that the black family will not embessle money from the firm if we are paid because we will not want to mess with an oppertunity that was given to us.they no longer have that friendly underwriter that was so honorable to them in giving them loans on a hand shake rather than the conventional way of applying for a loan as we have to because the goverment shut that down due to lack of repayment on those loans and heads rolled and some went to jail so that’s a wrap no more of that.so these lazy white trash white folks that always had the hookups are assed out now and on their own just like the black family and what do they do.first for the weakest white folks they just put shot guns to their heads and blow their heads off i have been seeing this in the news lately and the others have been leaving their families and getting hooked on drugs and you see them hanging in the hoods across america looking like trash standing at stoplights with their signs begging for money pretending to be army vets,

I thought Rev. Sharpton did this for publicity cause some of things he does are, but after reading what was said that s**t was definitely racist… WTF??? I hope they ass don’t get any stimulus money…

This is just another form of AmeriKKKa’s subliminal racism. Like Kanye said its still alive they just be concealing. C’mon a chimp getting shot by police while they are joking about stimulus bills the message is plain as day. I bet whoever published this is hating the fact that they have to be the public scape goat, but then again them it may be very well worth it! Shows anything can happen in America, where we have a system that can be bent at will, to suit ones needs! When it, Eye dont sweat it because at the end of the day I relsih in faact theat this country was built off our ingeniousness, our blood, sweat, and tears no amount of racism can take away that. Thats the bitter pill that blind Americans have to swallow everyday, so let them be mad and shallow. Thats a huge and bitter pill to swallow! We here, “Our-story” is made again and we arent going Noooo Wheeeeere!

i’m sorry black family i got cut off by mistakingly hitting the post button without finishing.so i will close with saying the time has come the black family has arrived however we still have alot of work that needs to be done but i’ll tell you family they see us coming and they hear us marching to our own beat! and that’s why they make these silly comments and hbo puts out that silly racist mccain palin campaign special with these white trash hillbillies making these remarks about obama.they are scared people and we should be happy that they are scared because that tells us that we are close to taking over the country, but we will just live fairly that is all we ever wanted they want to rule and that is all they know so they are expressing their fear when they react like this it’s their devil ways they can’t help themselves pray for them devils they need it.may allah god bless the whole black race and love it when others hate on us because it tells us we are felt and we are in the game strong,it’s when they do not talk about us then we should worry because that means we are not a threat and the devil is happy with the position that we are in.WE GOT UM ON THE ROPES SO LIKE MUHAMMED ALI LETS USE THE ROPE A DOPE AND PUT THAT DEVIL TO SLEEP.

(You know what, I agree with BKNY. This cartoonist is racist and hateful, but it says more about our culture that we only react when his post is offensive to black people.)
That’s not necessarily true. People react to every offensive post, but the outright racist nature of THIS cartoon is just completely uncalled for. It’s one thing to try and shock people to sell papers, it takes a really screwed up head to take 2 things that have absolutely nothing in common, the shooting of a monkey, and the first black president, and put them together. What does one have to do with the other, nothing. I’m not a big fan of Rev. Sharpton but he’s absolutly right. If you have the right to be racist, we have the obligation to protest, and protest what offends US as indiviuals. So what if we only protest things that concern us, we’re not all activists, and there’s not enough time in the day to adddress everything.

This is not fair at all… i did not see the new york post mocking bush and his bone head decisions.. anysways Obama is damned if he does and damned if he deosnt which is not fair, because we had a dumb ass before Obama who just killed the economy and we didnt impeach this guy but we wanted to impeach Clinton for having Sex but we wont impeach bush for killing people, i think our priorities arent straight…..

here’s what i see when i look at that cartoon:

    1) the rear tire of the first car and the front tire of the second car suggest ”ears” to me and are spaced apart appropriately so. what drew my attention to that was the smoke from the gun and the second car’s tire form an ear shape. Obama is known for his ears.

    2) the shadows and their angles under the bumpers of the first and second cars suggest eyes.

    3) the pavement is black/dark all over that area

    4) take a look at this famous obama poster which is skewed the same way:
    http://www.obamawalldecor.com/

    5) the ”nose” triangle formed by the post, gun and pavement line in front of the second car.

to me the references are pretty obvious at a subliminal level. I know some will think it paranoia…just my two cents

As much as I try not to like white people and to say of them are bad. Even they took one look at this cartoon and knew it was a racist slam at our President’s race. They didn’t say anything about Bush’s race when he and all his predecessor’s got us in this mess but they will call Barack a monkey for trying to fix it. Well ain’t that a Bit–!!!Let me tell you something when this intelligent man starts turning things around these same a-holes well be trying to kiss his butt like he is the second coming or that this cartoon never happened. I believe that part of the problem is people who have trouble letting go and admitting the world is less racist than it once was and looking too hard to find racism. First thing I thought of when I saw this was the monkey shot by police, and the fact that he probably could’ve written a stimulus package at least as good as the one that finally made it through the house and senate (no dis on the president). Really, don’t we all need to quit being just a bit oversensitive about the racism thing?

This is just a distraction. While every ones focusing on this cartoon-noone is focusing on the real human being(who they see as non-human) who got shot in the back execution style. Oscar Grant. Why no posts about that-but so many about this b.s.?

Because they want to distract you-meaning the media/newspapers etc. from a more serious incident. They play this strategy on you all the time-but most are 2 dumb 2 notice.

If they were really serious they would have sued the Post by now-screw a march. They’re playing media games with you all. They are making it seem like this cartoon is more important somehow…….???

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/bigteddykb/ bigteddykb

Ok, could there be some over reaction in all this? Opponents if the stimulus package have said it looks like it was written by a bunch of monkeys. They say that because there is alot in it that do nothing to “stimulate” the economy:
$650 million for Digital TV converter box program
$400 million in operations budget money for NASA
$415 million for Indian Health Facilities construction projects etc. As we all know President Obama did NOT WRITE ONE WORD OF THAT BILL! It was written and submitted by Nancy Polosi and Harry Reid (two WHITE people). The cartoon states “They’ll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus bill”. If Obama didn’t write the first two bills, isn’t it a stretch to assume he’ll write the next one? The cartoon was calling the author of the bill a monkey. President Obama was not the author!

Commentary: Until White America ‘Gets It,’ Racial and Class Divisions Will Continue
    Date: Thursday, September 15, 2005
By: Judge Greg Mathis, Special to BlackAmericaWeb.com
Every so often, something in America happens that reminds the general population that white and black Americans are reading different pages in very different books. In the 1990s, the L.A. riots and the O.J. Simpson “not guilty” verdict proved that this country’s race problem didn’t go away post-integration, but was merely swept under the rug. In this decade, the Hurricane Katrina disaster or, more appropriately, it’s handling, is our wake up call.
A recent USA TODAY/CNN Gallop Poll reveals the races are sharply divided on the subject of the victims themselves, President Bush’s handling of the situation and the reasons the government was so slow to respond. According to the poll, six in 10 blacks say that the government responded slowly because the majority of the victims were poor and black, while nearly nine in 10 whites say race and class were not a factor. Even more mind-boggling is the reality that 71 percent of blacks said the disaster response strengthened their belief that racial bias is still a problem in the U.S. Only 32 percent of whites agreed.
There is no doubt that the reasons for this difference in perception can be attributed to the disparity in the historical and current realities of black and white Americans.
America’s historical reality is that blacks were once considered chattel and were bought and sold as such. When we were counted as human beings, we weren’t considered whole; instead, we were thought to be only 3/5ths of a person. Throughout all this, many whites were able to gain money, prestige and power — often on the backs of our people. Fast-forward to modern times and blacks continue to face discrimination. American apartheid, racial bias in hiring, housing, education, lending practices and the courts have reinforced the idea that African-Americans are not fully valued in this country.
Exasperating the differences in perception is the fact that many whites are removed from the reality of race in this country. If whites choose to do so, they can go their entire lives and have limited contacts with blacks and other minorities. They don’t have to learn our history in school, they don’t have to live amongst us, and they don’t have to see us in the workplace. Blacks, on the other hand, don’t have that luxury. From very early on, we are assimilated into an American culture that has oppressed us.
President Bush says that race did not play a role in the way the massive flooding in New Orleans was handled. Nevertheless, the majority of the suffering, despondent faces on television and in newspapers and magazines belonged to our brothers and sisters. The president’s own mother, during an interview on National Public Radio’s Marketplace commented that many of the displaced individuals were already underprivileged, so living in the Houston Astrodome where they were evacuated was “working very well for them.”
This statement lacks compassion and shows a lack of understanding of the pervasive problems of race and class in this country. President Bush is not his mother, but the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
We can no longer accept that some things will always be different for us, that we will always see things differently than whites. White America must understand how race and class divisions affect our communities. Until they “get it,” the bias that thwarts our progress will continue.
Judge Greg Mathis is Chairman of the Rainbow PUSH-Excel Board and a National Board Member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

Its about time white america stop refering to us as monkeys we are human beings just like them only a shade darker we all sit and lay down the same way we dont hang from trees or pick flees off each other. when will we as a black nation stop being offended by the ignorance of the white america cause all their doing now is chain pulling and laughing at us all over a picture lets fight infalation lets fight proverty and homelessness in our communities lets protest the closures of our schools and how our children are being sensely gunned down in the streets lets stop focusing on chain pulling thats all this is the monkeys got offended and their protesting get the picture think about it focus on us and not on what white america thinks about us their picking at our intelect. in my opinion this aint nothin but chain pulling .they can kiss my monkey ass for all I care.

The racist people of America which includes all colors and backgrounds continue to ignore the damage that racism is doing to the country.
I hate to be pessimistic at a time like this but I cannot see the light of day or have the confidence that America will recover from it’s economic, health care, jobless and other problems until it can learn that racism destroys all countries that harbor it.
Barack Obama is a man to be respected at times like this for even taking on such a job like the President of the U.S.
We have so many prejudice and uneducated people in this country and that’s what’s keeping from moving forward.
All other issues can be fixed but the issue of racism is the hardest one.
Let’s focus on racism and all the others will fall in line.

I read all the comments that are posted here and everybody is right we should get offended but. At the same time lets get moving Black like SEXYBIGNSWEET said ” We as a black nation should stop being offended by the ignorance of a few whites in america.” Not exactly her words but we have to move past that we as a black race have to quit worrying about the few haters/racist groups and individuals. Black people we have come along way and we have father to go.We have a black president now more of us going to school graduating. We have more actors a poll was taken and believe it or not we have more big time actors more influential actors more and more black millionaires and even billionaires we need to work on the problems we can fix within our community within our race Like that old saying “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” So lets remember the hate us cause the can’t be like us let’s continue to improve us BLACK PEOPLE

I am so shocked by that cartoon. I know racism is still out there but for it to be put up in a popular newspaper and for everyone to read i am so upset. They can not justify that cartoon, It was disrespectful to the world, Barack Obama, his family, and all the African Americans in the world. We never were monkeys but we were categorized at such but we have come out of that image and shown that we are brighter, outgoing and independent individuals. I think the fact that Racist messages can be displayed on TV shows and newspapers is so wrong. There hast to be a change. The things Reverend Al Sharpton, Jessie Jackson, Spike Lee , Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks,Malcolm X , Harriet Tubman and all the other African American Leaders have fought for is being Disregarded and Laughed at It makes me want to fight harder for whats good for us and our country. I hope that all of us as African American and justified people just fight for our rights, respect and whats just. Also I would like to say for us to Lend a helping hand to our President Barack Obama and help him work on all the issues we need help to change especially i failing economy cause we all need money to take care of ourselves and our family. I don’t agree that this is sufficient. They should be firing the cartoonist and the editor who let it go to print. Unless they just got to America yesterday, they are very well aware of the racist undertones and references to monkeys. They mentioned the stimulus bill on purpose to connect it to Obama and if the law can tear a piece out of Eminem’s ass for saying that he’d rather be dead than not have any dead presidents and loosely refer that to Bush when it clearly was referring to money, they should be doing the same for a nationally available newsletter like that. At the very least they should be fined and publicly admonished by the journalists’ associations or whoever looks over the print media. This is b.s. and their fake apology is neither accepted nor sufficient.

Americans and us African Americans included , should feel embarrassed. We are so uneducated about our own Nation’s Civic’s procedures, that we didn’t understand that the cartoon had 0 , nothing, nada to do with Obama or black people.

Congress and a commitee, spearheaded and wrote the damned stimilus package. And thats who the article was Lampooning.

Learn about Civic’s and CONTEXT. This made Americans, and African Americans look ignorant and oppertunistic and like a crazed mob.

Thats worth 50 racist cartoons all by its self.

not to mention it was only mirroring current events.

wow..what a Tom..But the disgusting part of it all is that they get this black man to explain it all (talk about adding insult to injury)..Why didn’t the writer, himself, come forward?? My uncle who happens to be an elderly white Jewish man told me NEVER to buy this paper..and I never did. Any person of color that reads the NY Post is crazy. point blank.

Hmmm….Is it me?? or does this Black Planet news and media only cover black negativity?????
Hey writers and journalists of BP, there are lots and lots of great black news stories to cover ya’know?!

To: Blacktino: YOu should be ashamed of yourself. Hopefully, your children, or parents don’t get to read what you wrote. Two police officers just slayed a monkey. And In the Editors on words, he says, “They’ll have to find SOMEBODY else to write the next stimulus bill”. Now who is that somebody, that they need somebody to replace. OBAMA! How do you say that has nothing to do with Obama? They clearly just said it, in their own words. Wake up! Its a shame to see Black Men so blind and ignorate. Quick to take the Masters side. Some people will never stop shuffling. Yessa Boss

The cartoon WAS NOT, I repeat, NOT targeting or “lampooning” Congress and the committee out of which the bill came. That is the saddest, most cowardice attempt by anyone to defend the indefensible, for it fails to deal with what most people have in their minds when they think of the stimulus deal. There is a face, or an individual that is immediately associated with the stimulus package subconsciously, irregardless to the process through which it came, and that is President Obama; period!! The cartoonist knew it, the editor knew it, Rupert Murdoch knew it, and all of the coward a** Black people trying to defend this bullsh*t know it!!

And because they knew it, the apology is nothing more than politics, made in order to not lose favor(money). It is not genuine, there is no sincerity; for it still plays us to the left by saying, “It was not meant to be racist, but unfortunately, it was interpreted by many as such.” This was not a mistake, it was an error and an error is a willful departure from right! So, some of you can buy that lame a** “apology” if you want to, but I won’t. But then again, what the hell can you expect from a “devil”, but more devilishment. Peace.

In the future, this should be expected from anyone connected to Rupert Murdoch or anyone with the New York Post. N.Y.P. was the target of anti-racist roasting by the 90s rap group Public Enemy. And Murdoch ? The bastard has been known in the past to be a general racist. He’s not to be supported at all. Boycott everything he stands for !

I dont get it. Was this “political apology” supposed to fix the problem? HELL NAWL! Im pissed now. Before i was just angry, now im pissed. This just goes to show that as long as we strive as a people to do better, “they” will always find something else to do so we feel as if we havent progressed at all. like my granny used to say- ” we take 2 step forward, then they come and snatch us 10 steps back”.

the one line that pissed me off most was- “In fact, a 2008 study published by the American Psychological Association found that an association between primates and African Americans still exists among many white Americans.”

    Are You F**kin Serious?

    CANT BE!

This is insane. If thats the case, we might as well just go back to picking cotton and getting lynched….wtf…

and last but not least- BP NEEDS TO STOP PUTTING THESE RACIST ASS REPORTS UP, i havent seen ANY positive black reporting yet. its about time for a change. change we can believe in. All Is One!

Im really curious to here what Obama will say about this

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/twofyne2sexi/ twofyne2sexi

That wasn’t an apology, that statement (in the form of an apology) came after a protest and a petition…and yes, they are afraid of a boycott and the boycott of their advertisers in the newspaper. You see my fellow black people we are a force to be heard if we only stick together, and demand that our voices be heard. But what i thought was interesting, is that Rupert Murdock, is waiting on a decision from Obama as to whether he will be able to run his mega industry here…so he had no choice but to bow down, but if he doesn’t get it he stands to loose millions. I heard it on the Warren Ballentyne show. Also what is being done about the editor and the racist bigot that drew the cartoon???..they should be allowed to get away with it, they need to be fired, and criminal charges brought against them for insighting racism!!!

I think that if the black community boycotts the new york post their circulation won’t be effected by that. And apologizing for the cartoon is not enough. I think that legal action should be taken. Why not, if it was a black newspaper criticizing a white president with something that was as offensive as that cartoon, the paper would be getting sued for libel and for pain and suffering.
