Oakland’s Civil War: The People Vs The Police
By Davey D.
By now everyone is aware of the what went down in Oakland, Ca this weekend where 4 officers were gunned down by a parolee named Lovell Mixon. Not sure what to make of all this..meaning how and why did this happen. What I do know is that here in Austin, Texas at the SxSW Music festival when word came out about the shootings people from Philly to LA expressed feelings that suggested that some sort of justice was served. That was reflected in the loud cheers that were heard at two separate shows when it was announced what happened.
MAN KILLS 4 POLICE OFFICERS IN OAKLAND
Some may find it shocking, appalling, outrageous etc.. Others found it as understandable and even satisfactory.. In both instances the crowds were mixed racially and age wise. Why such a reaction when those who are charged with protecting and serving are gunned down? Why would people cheer for death? The answer may lie in the type of perceptions and actual day to day increasing amounts of people have with the police…
For many it was hard to separate yesterday’s killings from the image of an unarmed Oscar Grant being shot by a rogue cop. The image is still ingrained in folks minds. Here in Austin folks still can’t separate the thoughts of unarmed Daniel Rocha, Kevin Brown, Jesse Lee Owens and Sophie King being gunned down by police. The community was outraged here when these killings happened. Folks from Philly started naming off names of people killed in their city. Same with folks from Chicago. The New Yorkers talked about Sean Bell and Amadu Diallo and noted that they saw those vicious shootings play out in trials that left all the officers acquitted. Two unarmed men 91 shots and no convictions. It’s left many people feeling hopeless and cynical-Justice will not come from the courts.
We spoke with community activist and rap artist Truth Universal of New Orleans who still has the image of Adolph Grimes being gunned down in a hail of 12 bullets the same night Oscar Grant was killed. He stated that for many he can see how they would think that justice was served. He said its a case of chickens coming home to roost and that the reason why so many people may have appeared gleeful is that the police have for so long looked at various communities as less than human. Eventually the people on the receiving end would see the police in the same light. It’s no coincident that people from coast to coast all have the same distaste and distrust.
Yes, some will stop, take a moment and reflect and realize that the officers slain are sons, fathers, husbands and brothers and deserve a prayer. But the mood quickly changes when folks recall the day to day confrontations friends and family have had with the police. Many rationalize that the police have not shown any remorse for the thousand of people victimized by folks on the force. Were their flowers or cards of condolences sent to the families of Oscar Grant? Amadu Diallo? Sean Bell? etc?
When we spoke with Mistah Fab he noted how he raised similar questions around Oscar Grant to Oakland police officers who told him there was a lot of politics, so they had to keep quiet. He found the answer unacceptable. He noted that sort of behavior 1-Is what they tell the people in Oakland not to do..They want residents who feel unsafe to blow the whistle on wrong doings, but they as cops won’t do the same. He also noted that it shows how far apart many are from the community they serve.. How could one not speak when they see something so blatantly wrong?
KC Carter a former ACLU lawyer who heads up the organization Hip Hop Against Police Brutality here in Austin, notes that for many its not the Oscar Grants and Annete Garcias (unarmed mother of 3 shot by police in Riverside this year). Those are the ultimate manifestations of police brutality. He said its the day to day humiliations and brutality that people endure-much of which goes unreported. It might having to sit still and grit your teeth while an officer speaks rudely while issuing a citation. It might be someone having to endure an elder parent or grand parent get a verbal lashing from a cop who is bent on showing no respect to you and your people. It’s the thousands of folks who get tasered, pushed, punched and intimidated by police who work from a stand point of establishing fear to maintain control.
I recall doing a radio show earlier this year in Los Angeles at the beginning of the Oscar Grant situation. During the show some ’soon to be’ cop called in and said if any suspect gave him lip or insulted him he would take them out. Me and host Dominique Diprima were dumb-founded. Here’s a guy claiming to be in the academy and this is how he’s viewing the world? How many other cops are thinking this way?
Lucky for us during the show another officer called in and said that what he heard was unacceptable and said in no uncertain terms should a police officer behave in that manner. That was a good thing. The concern is that dude is still in the academy. How will he get weeded out? Sadly for many we don’t see officers standing up on the side of the citizens who feel they were unjustifiably brutalized. We don’t see those good cops, those hard working cops coming out and denouncing rogue and criminal behavior.
As word seaped out about the 4 police sergeants being shot in Oakland, while some expressed glee other expressed concern that the police would be retaliating. They said the block would be hot and everybody would be subjected to a police force bent on seeking revenge.
KC Carter noted that it will be important for the police to re-establish their position where fear is a main component. In fact, he noted this shooting may have harsh effects all across the country, because police in Texas, police in New York, police in Oakland and everywhere in between do not want people in communities they patrol to get in their heads its ok to shoot cops with no push back. He said expect to state to push back in Black and Brown communities where folks are likely to not be so sympathetic to these officers being gunned down in Oakland.
West Oakland artist Jern-Eye of the group Lunar Heights cautioned folks to not see the slaying of these officers of some sort of victory. He recounted the types of challenges West Oakland residents went through last time an officer was killed. He stated that everyone caught hell. He added that it would be important for the community to use this tragedy to come together and rise above the fray. he said it was important for us to build up the community and make it a safe productive place for the youth. A tit for tat battle with the police will not be constructive in the long run.
Lastly, in closing a few things to keep in mind. First, none of the officers slain lived in Oakland. They all live in the suburbs miles away from Oakland. This has long been a concern. Folks from outside the city they patrol come in and don’t show the type of respect one feels is deserved. Many feel they don’t truly understand the people. Not sure if this was the case with the officers who were slain. They were all veterans on the police force and one would hope they saw and cherished the community they served.
Second, police brutality still continues. They day of the shooting in Oakland we saw 15 Arab students across the Bay in San Francisco get beat down by police at an anti-war March as they tried to prevent police from arresting a 10 year old child.
http://globalcomment.com/2009/police-brutality-in-san-francisco-takes-over-anti-war-rally-march-21-2009/
Third we also have police on a mission to hem up Bay Area journalist Minister of Information JR of Block Report Radio SF Bayview who actually broke this story to us before the local newspapers and Tv station had gotten the word out. He’s being railroaded charged with felony arson (lighting a garbage can on fire) as he was taking pictures and covering the first Oscar Grant rallies. His court date is today March 23rd
As this case unfold we will watch carefully to see how both the community and police departments ultimately rise to the occasion.

In this Breakdown FM show we talk to a number of people who explain what’s going on and in many ways capture the mood of the city and many people.
They include rap artists Truth Universal, Mistah FAB, and former ACLU lawyer KC Carter who heads up Hip Hop Against Police Brutality. We also talk to Oakland residents and members of the group Lunar Heights who expressed a variety of emotions and opinions about how one should feel and do about the situation. I think the discussion amongst that crew of folks showed how complicated this all gets.. One says ‘F the Police’ while another one says lets move to higher ground and beyond violence..On many levels its an age old debate..
The interview with Mistah Fab found half way through this show is incredible as breaks alot of things down including the type of distrust we have come to have with one another..He describes the situation in Oakland as a Civil War and notes that very little has changed since the 60s and 70s when it comes to police, community relations. He notes that not all cops are bad but far too many remain silent while the bad apples cut loose and leave long lasting bad impressions with the community
Music includes cuts from dead prez, Truth Universal, Beeda Weeda & J Stalin, Mistah FAB & Jennifer Johns

There was NEVER a confirmation that DNA evidence confirmed he was a rapist. I dont know what your media there told you, but here that story has DIED OFF and they have not said anything about it. So whatever reports you heard about DNA are not true, becuase if they were we here in Oakland would have been notified before anyone. You need to watch the media, which has a long history of crucifying black men before even proving them guilty. In this case, I am speaking of the rape charge. I wonder how many of you were blogging and outraged when that white man murdered that young man in cold blood on camera.
oakland is my Hometown. right now i stay in fresno,ca i think its all cops across the country policed is hella crooked… and they label people as criminals but realistically speaking what makes people kill cops?? that’s a easy question. cops isn’t angels they have guns tasers and hand cuffs and tasers/Mace
Justice is blind…it does not know color and one injustice does not justify another. This pre-school principle that we all learned as children IS still relevant today. That two wrongs do not make a right. I am outraged at the sensless killing of our brothers and sisters, I am further outraged by recent evidence that suggests that based on upbringing latent racial feelings may be making the difference from when an officer pulls the trigger, or talks through a situation. I’m not talking about overt racists, I’m talking about even black officers, and officers that have many diverse friends. The sensless killing of these officers should not be celebrated under any circ**stance as all life is precious, ours and theirs. Justice could only be said to have been served if these officers were themselves perpetrators of racially motivated executions. No one is above the law.
I’m out of Orlando and this story is now nation wide. But what is being reported is the protest-march in support of the murderer. And chanting ‘hero, hero’ over and over. This video is quickly followed with a note that DNA evidence shows he raped a 12 yr old girl. And the community is supporting this rapist? For killing?
I honestly don’t know what the objective of this is other than feeling good for killing 4 men – but anyone who sees this story is disgusted and has a lesser feeling to help the community and support them with their issues with the police. And do you think these killings and support of this rapist will make the police – nice? Or even meaner?
I’m an Oakland resident and I’m well aware of the perception that the police are always hemming up some brotha’. Well people of the planet, don’t believe the hype. I grew up in Oakland, still live there now, and am raising a teenager daughter. I’ve never been arrested by the police, but have had interactions with them, and frankly, I would never cheer hearing that an officer was killed by a punk that didn’t want to go back to jail for violating his parole. Hell, if he wasn’t talking on his cell phone, they would have never even pulled his a** over in the first place. And about a march to glorify and memorialize a monster that killed four police officers because his selfish a** didn’t want to pay for his crimes. (The Uhuru Group did our city a great disservice) I disagree there’s a civil war, and in fact Oakland’s acting Police Chief is black. I agree that some rouge cops (Yes the Riders were rouge cops) do violate the civil rights of others, but in a city with such high crime, impoverishment, unemployment and a disproportionate amount of ex-convicts, the police are needed to maintain order or these lawless thugs will overrun the good citizens.
Oakland police are NOTORIOUS 4 brutality, planting evidence, and murdering black men. I dont see any of our black “bloggers” kicking up dust when this happens, in every city, every day in this country. Google the Oakland riders case. Why didnt u get upset when the black in New Orleans tried to cross a bridge out of N O and got shot, point blank by military and white civilians. 11 total. Why werent u disgusted then? Did u even know about that? I dont condone violence, especially when it ends with a young brother dead. But my efforts r 2 make our communities better 2 keep our youngsters out of jail and a coffin. The question we should be asking, is what is so bad about our prison system that would make a man commit suicide, rather than go back?
If I were u, especially if I were black, I would b real skeptical of the media and anything they say pertaining this case / man. I live in Oakland, born and raised, and I can assure you that the police chief (that brother) has no real power in this city. Neither does the black mayor. Funny how they say he raped a 12 yr old girl and they identified him by his DNA, but there was no APB out 4 him at time of incident. Y NOT? Was the little girl black? I havnt heard anything in the news abt a 12 yr old girl being raped. Now all of a sudden its front page news. They say he walkd up 2 the officers and shot them point blank after he shot them initially. The news reports showed they were shot, but not dead. How were they not dead if he shot them at point blank range? Go to Youtube and research urban warfare. There is a big plan 4 the inner cities (black communities) and it is underway. Situations like this push them 2 the forefront.
Protect the community?? what community your suburbial community?..frome what i see in the black neighborhoods they stalk the community, and with the help of racist legislature, they pass dubious laws to allow cops to routinely violate the peoples constitutional rights,so the next time a cop shoots a youn g black man in the back for no appearent reason i’d like to see the outrage that i’m seeing now with regards to this situation, otherwise have a coke, and a smile and shut the %%%% up!
In this foul world you reap what you sew..don’t blame me, blame the creator..Bad teachers, clergy, etc don’t assault, and murder innocent people on a regular basis..When an unarmed young black male is gunned down for no appearant reason or because he may have running away from a cop in which case posing no threat to the cop, he is still gunned down in the streets. In light of this,i can understand why there is no tears being shed in the poor black community for their oppressors..one can express your concealed racism all you want, but the fact remains that cops place no moral value on the life of particularly young black males, and even females in the majority black comunities..The GodFather has spoken,so you can continue to hate or change your ways..either way the truth will prevail.. Love you haters!!!
There is no excuse for these people acting this way! These men/officers protected this community and risked their lives while doing so. They gave their lives ultimately. They were good men. Which is more than I can say for you cowards who are celebrating the death of these heros. They protected many people from this vicious criminal. I wonder if his victims would feel they same way as some of you pathetic idots. I seriously doubt they would. How dare you celebrate this vial act. What kind of people are you? Of course there are bad cops out there, there are also bad teachers, bad clergymen/women,bad family members, there is bad everywhere. You can’t blame good people for what bad people did. If this were the case, I’m sure we could find something to hate each of you for too. Try taking a look in the mirror and see whats looking back at you. Perhaps you are celebrating this horrific incident because you yourself are a criminal. I can’t believe that a decent human being would act any such way. Hmmm, then again, you aren’t acting decent are you…
Mixon, who was released from prison late last year after serving a sentence for violating his parole for a San Francisco-related robbery shooting, was a suspect in the Dec. 30, 2007, murder of Ramon Stevens, 42, but witnesses did not come forward, investigators said. And now police have confirmed that DNA evidence from a state laboratory possibly links Mixon to the rape of a 12-year-old girl in February near the 74th Avenue apartment, Lt. Kevin Wiley said.
His DNA evidence is in the system because he was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon for an October 2002 carjacking in San Francisco
When you cheer think about Mixon’s victims, especially the 12 year old.
This site really sickens me. Tell you what, go out to Oakland and tell the Chief of Police ( that ‘ Brother ‘ ) you feel justice was served and make sure you cheer.
ALTHOUGH IT’S WRONG, IT SHOWS THAT EVERYONE DOES NOT JUST RUN SOME PEOPLE HAVE NO FEAAR AND NOTHING TO LOSE, AND THIS ISN’T ‘92 IF THERE ARE GOING TO BE RIOTS, IT’S NOT GOING TO BE PEOPLE FIGHTING TO TEAR DOWN THE HOOD, THEIR GOING TO GO HEAD TO HEAD WITH THE POLICE, AND IF BLACK AND BROWN DO IT TOGETHER, THERE IS GONNA BE MAJOR DAMAGE, POLICE NEED TO REALIZE THEY UPHOLD THE LAW, THEY ARE NOT THE LAW AND NOT ABOVE IT, IF THEY TREAT PEOPLE LIKE CITIZENS THEN MAYBE WE CAN ALL GET ALONG, BUT AS LONG AS THEY STEROTYPE AND MISTREAT PEOPLE, N.W.A’S ATTITUDE IS GOING TO REIGN STRONG F**K THE POLICE
im from east oakland, and the relationship between the police and oaklanders has always been rocky. it started with the black panther party, and it’s been that way ever since. on any given day you can be beat, robbed, or shot, not by your neighbor, but by the OPD. the biggest coke dealer in oakland, isn’t black && he’s not white..he’s blue.
