Countering criticism that he has done little to advance gay rights, President Obama commemorated the 40th anniversary yesterday of the birth of the modern movement by welcoming its leaders to the White House and reaffirming his commitment to their top priorities.

“I will not only be your friend; I will continue to be an ally and a champion and a president who fights with you and for you,’’ Obama told members of the core Democratic constituency as he and his wife Michelle hosted a cocktail-and-appetizer reception in the East Room marking the four decades since the police raid on New York City’s Stonewall Inn that spurred gay rights activism across the country.

Since Obama took office in January, some activists have complained that he has not followed through quickly enough on his campaign promises, including one to rescind the 1993 “don’t ask, don’t tell’’ policy that prevents homosexuals from serving openly in the military and to overturn the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act that defines marriage as between men and women and allows states to ignore gay marriages performed in other states.

“I know many in this room don’t believe that progress has come fast enough. And I understand that,’’ Obama said. But he added: “I expect and hope to be judged not by words, not by promises I’ve made, but by promises that my administration keeps.’’

By the time he leaves office, the president said, “I think you guys will have pretty good feelings about the Obama administration.’’

The crowd erupted in cheers.

He noted that earlier this month, he issued a presidential memorandum expanding some federal benefits to same-sex partners.

Critics have pointed out that it doesn’t include health benefits or pension guarantees. Obama also said the administration is working to pass an employee nondiscrimination bill and a hate crimes bill that includes protections for gays and lesbians, and he said it is committed to rescinding a ban on entry to the United States based on HIV status.

New standards for lamps called no small matter
Aiming to keep the focus on climate change legislation, Obama put in a plug yesterday for administration efforts to make lamps and lighting equipment use less energy.

“I know light bulbs may not seem sexy, but this simple action holds enormous promise, because 7 percent of all the energy consumed in America is used to light our homes and businesses,’’ the president said, standing beside Energy Secretary Steven Chu at the White House.

Obama said the new efficiency standards he was announcing for lamps would result in substantial savings between 2012 and 2042, saving consumers up to $4 billion annually, conserving enough energy to power every US home for 10 months, reducing emissions equal to the amount produced by 166 million cars a year, and eliminating the need for as many as 14 coal-fired power plants.

The president also said he was speeding the delivery of $346 million in economic stimulus money to help improve energy efficiency in new and existing commercial buildings.

Republicans took issue with Obama’s pitch.

“Conservation is only half the equation,’’ said Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Senate Republican leader. “Even as we use less energy, we need to produce more of our own. We have to admit there’s a gap between the clean, renewable fuel we want and the reliable energy we need.’’

Just days before the event was added to the president’s schedule, the House narrowly approved the first energy legislation designed to curb global warming, following furious lobbying by White House advisers and personal pressure from Obama.

I stand firmly behind Obama but I do not support gay rights, I support Human Rights. Humans should have the same rights to marry a member of the opposite sex and thats it. Obama stand up for what’s right and not promises.

This is what make Obama a wonderful person/black man. The fact that he realizes that everyone deserves God given right. We black people better be careful because when you discriminate it will come back to bite you in the ass….i believe that if you pay these high ass city/state/federal taxes, you should have the same damn rights as the next person. Damn black people…you can’t expect this man to perserve your rights only…he is the peoples president damn it. Get over yourselves!

I feel horrible for saying this cause deep down I know it’s wrong, but why would you lift a ban keeping people out based on their HIV status. I’m sorry but we have enough problems with aids and hiv in the u.s. I think if they have hiv they need to stay where they’re at, and the gay marriage thing is just gross how bout no on that.

Why are people so against this?

Homosexuality in and of itself is not a lifestyle (style of life); they don’t do anything that heterosexuals don’t do except of who they do it with. Is heterosexuality a lifestyle? Is autism a lifestyle?

For the record, this is nothing new. Homosexuals have existed LONG before the media focused attention on its issues, so if the country was going down because of them, it would have done so long ago. No one seems to talk about the failure of HETEROSEXUAL marriages and things that heterosexuals do to deteriorate society, since they ARE the majority, anyway.

There is nothing but fear going on in these comments. What happened to love? If you would just show love to everybody, hate, fear and disharmony will flee.

I can hear the same voice of fear shouting, “Please don’t let those n****rs come in our school!” and “N****rs go back to Africa!” and “Black people are supposed to be slaves and serve because of Ham’s sin and Ham’s curse upon Canaan in the Bible”. But we know the truth about those things, don’t we?

Plenty of people have tattoos, wear mixed and synthetic fabric, eat cheeseburgers and shellfish, are blind, wear glasses, broken limbs or [insert other human defect here] and still attend church services/enter the tabernacle and so-called Christians don’t make an uproar about that, if you want to take it to “homosexuality is a sin”. Romans 10:9 and John 3:16-17 are sufficient.

If God is so omniscient and omnipotent, LET HIM TAKE CARE OF IT! Take care of yourself, love everybody, put your confidence in Him (and NOT in man, including Obama) and let Him do the rest. In the meantime, everyone should have the same human rights, liberties, benefits and responsibilities and no one should deny or be denied of any or all of them.

First,I hate when people equate civil rights movement with this gay rights, it is totally different, so QUIT COMPARING IT. Two I’m getting irritated with people posting scriptures stating that “its okay ta be gay and that it is not a sin.” Apparently you don’t read your Bible. God is strict on what he feels about that. Lev 18:22-Thou shalt not lie with mankind as with womankind: it is an abomination. DO NOT TALK ABOUT MY GOD unless it is a correct statement, God is NOT smiling on Obama being okay with gay marriages. Oh, also if you need more scripture, one of the read Genesis 19 when the men in Sodom wanted the angels(which are men and so states they were men) instead of Lot’s two daughters. See what happened to them for that. DO NOT QUOTE scriptures about something u have NOT done research on. I am not perfect and I have my flaws but it would have been wrong for me ta know something in the Bible and not let people know, God would hold ME accountable for that. Being homosexual is a choice, but IT SHOULD NOT be okay for them ta be married, a marriage is sacred and recognized by God. He WILL NOT recognize same sex marriages

All I want to know is, why is it when someone disagree with anything that has to do with something gay, they end up being the worst person on earth. Being gay is a choice. I don’t care how much people say they was born that way, God don’t make gay babies. It was to much for schools almost teaching kids about being gay by having them read books like “Kings and Kings”. Its no future in gays being married, I mean what happens with the next generation. No kids or grand kids at all. I don’t have anything against gays, but straight people do not have to agree with everything yall bring to the table, so please give straight people their right to like or dislike.
