From the Washington Post:

All of this talk about a post-racial America where black people are seemingly thriving, partying at the White House with Jay-Z, and enjoying unprecedented access and opportunity is really starting to irk me because it is simply not the reality of most black Americans. In fact, a quiet storm has been brewing among African American leaders for months over the devastating effects that U.S. economic woes are having on blacks across the nation.

The issue came to a head recently when Tavis Smiley, appearing on the morning show of syndicated radio host Tom Joyner, openly questioned black leaders such as NAACP President Ben Jealous, the Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Council of Negro Women’s Dorothy Height about their unwillingness to hold President Obama accountable for these disparities and demanded that Obama develop an agenda targeted to address black inequalities. Impassioned by the debate, Smiley is hosting a national forum today in Chicago titled, “We Count! The Black Agenda is the American Agenda.”

Text continues after gallery …

But some are asking the wrong question. The issue is not whether the president should be focused on a “black agenda” vs. an “American agenda,” or whether Obama has a “special obligation” to highlight black issues in ways that his predecessors might not have. The real question is: Do we still live in a nation that is largely divided by race and class? A spate of reports and news articles strongly suggests we do, highlighting the facts that blacks have been disproportionately and devastatingly affected by the recession, foreclosure crisis and loss of wealth in the U.S. economy since 2007.

If Manchurian Bama gives amnesty to these 15 million illegal alien parasites, then black people better start getting on the ball for real, because less than slave wages will be order in for the unskilled black community, if any wages at all. Boycott, start with McDonalds and AutoZone, because pretty soon young black kids will have to fill out applications in spanish to work in those places.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

lol@Manchurian Bama…I think a lot of people might miss that reference.

Listen, I ain’t mad at these illegal Aliens. They are organizing, mobilizing and taking care of business. While most people play to win, were the only people who play to play. We just happy to be off the bench and in the game, but then we start playing not to lose. Anyone familiar with sports, knows you can’t play the game like that. I went to Miami for the first time, and driving through Little Havana????? Damn, I didn’t quite expect to see what I did. Everything was in Spanish. The billboards, signs on the buses, even a Wal Greens sign was actually in Spanish. People have come here and made major moves. It’s true that a lot of them have received specialty loans and grants, but lets be real, if received those same loans and grants now, how many people would driving around with new SUV’s, with fur coats, and eating in five star rest while the hood would remain in a degraded state? WE DON’T PLAY TO WIN, WE PLAY TO PLAY!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

@Mr_Nanastroker, Trust me brother, even though I probably should have prefaced my statement with the very FACT you mentioned, I still haven’t and never will lose sight of it. My thing is, no one is going to repair that but us though. I know you’re not on it like this, but there are many who believe that white will someday reverse this condition were in, if we just keep begging them enough. Although, they should (“you break it, you repair it) the likelihood of that happening is ZERO %. I know you agree, but this is why I keep saying we have to DO THIS ourselves, but before that can happen, we need a serious paradigm shift in our thinking.

honors to Marcus Mosiah Garvey, Noble Drew Ali, and Elijah Muhammad…. (peace be upon them all)

who all told us to love ourselves, be ourselves and to have something for ourselves

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

    @_A_
I totally agree. People in general (all races) are better at condemning others and pushing for large-scale social change, than ever taking the steps themselves (in their own minds).

With what we have against us, “looking at the man/woman in the mirror” should be the FIRST thing we do (individually) if we don’t like how the world treats us. What’s the point of fighting for all these new opportunities and equality, if mentally, we’re still ‘hood’ and can’t/won’t take advantage of them anyway? i.e. you can set up a new full-scholarship/grant agency in the inner city, but if kids just want to be Weezy and C-Murder instead of Obama, Oprah, Tyler Perry types*, no additional opportunity will ever be ‘good enough’. We’ll still be calling each other “White” or ‘not Black enough’ for trying to BE MORE than what we are.

I hate to say it, but a lot of us just LOVE to CLAIM the ‘strength’ of our forefathers, even though we haven’t done sh*t to further the fight and really haven’t STRUGGLED through anything that we didn’t bring upon ourselves.

*It doesn’t matter what anyone personally feels about them, the fact is, they are at a level where most of us wish were.

@Johnny_Walker. You had me until the wanting to be Obama, Oprah or Tyler Perry. Honestly, I see no real difference with those three, and the previous three you mentioned. Listen, the three you have mentioned have become successful using this worlds barometer. That won’t do for us. The fact is, only a certain amount of blacks will be ALLOWED to reach that level. What has those three done for the betterment of humanity? I’m not talking opening schools, donating $$$ or even graduating from Harvard. How has that benefited the community at large? We need to start thinking self first then OUR community. Everyone else does this, so why are we the only people who consider ourselves successful, when we “get out” of our community?

*Again, in my view, this is a sign of us being hoodwinked on a grand scale. Why should anyone desire to be on the level of the three you mentioned? List the reasons why you think this should be the goal of young children?

From a broke black african american i think that even white people know

they aint focused on trying to just help blacks or even thinking about

history that has occured where their ancestors created unjust decisions

that lead to racial tention being of their background they will and

probably do think nothing of the the black community and thrive solely to

make it better for their PEOPLE because if they cared any they would

willingly expose the past and give blacks some type of appreciation and

dedication to the fact that they had ancesters of black african american

negro natives captive as slaves living humans used as animals we do not

forget history being taught everyday if we did there would be no recession

an its obvious that as an AMERICAN COMMUNITY that whites and blacks racists

none racists should be taken to court and trailed for their un or in or en

remorse of their past ancestrial actions that occured they either are scared

or they dont excuse my language give a damn which in some terms lead to

civil terrorism which is where gangs and rich white people get their fuel

for decisions made but to be more simple white people thriving to

discriminate their past laws created for blacks which in black negro eyes

isnt enough to replenshish the history created by slavery meaning we need

representatives of presidential council to work as race representatives to

also assist with people races genders and ages as its own problem in nature

to be dealt as a purpose to get proper info into a state which would break

it down to a community to a nation wide comming together to a better but

less than perfect nation which would be pretty close too perfect well being

    of society

    THANK YOU

THE PEOPLE WHO READ THIS AND ACTUALLY LOOK AT THIS AS A MEANS TO ASSISTING

THE us U S AMERICANS AND THE GOVERNMENT OF THE UNITED STATES OVERCOME

IGNORANCE OF RACISM AND PAST TENSION OF SLAVERY AND UNJUST LAWS WITH OPEN

OBSEREVATION OF PRESENT BEING ON GOING HISTORY TO BE TRAILED IN COURT TO

BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR US THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN THE FUTURE

    THANK YOU THANK YOU

(I BOWED TO SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SPEECH THAT SHOULD BE READ ALOUD TO AMERICA)

Even devout Muslim immigrants understand that the best jobs require more “American” dress, including tie and LEATHER shoes. As long as parents are allowing their kids to grow up with no respect for their appearance and no desire to go to college for ACADEMICS, we’ll be at the bottom of the totem pole.

My family started out in the ghetto. All of my siblings have jobs in offices now making high 5 figures to low 6 figures. And I am the most radical brother ever. I guess I’d rather have the money and the respect – they don’t have to like me or even think I belong.

we have been getting the message OVER AND OVER AND OVER time after time but the ill-effects of centuries long oppression still amounts 2 the few lapdogs they post as BLACK LEADERS that play against the people’s will

because if you keep the people WANTING & NEEDING you will 4Ever have Politicians, Churches, Police, unjust & immoral Laws 2 reprimand the people with

but the day of the coming of the lord is the day when US-BLACK-FOLK will be T

In order for Black Americans to get ahead and out of the invisible chains that holding them down mentally, emotionally and spiritually they have to help themselves. We won’t get ahead if we just talk and talk and don’t make an example for our children and future grandchildren to get ahead of the game. Yes, it’s all play and play for Black Americans as someone said but it can be turn around to play to win. The hustlers that hustle on the streets could have work in corporations or run their own legit business seriously. What they needed is a push (or reality check knock upside their heads) to turn the negativity lifestyles they’re living to something positive. Life in the game does not last long because it’s either jail, death or deadend jobs with not much pensions and even a home one can say they personally own.

Tavis Smiley and others like him who think president Obama should have a Black Agenda need to listen to his victory speech again. He said that he would be president to all Americans. He did not say that he would promote special programs for Blacks. Those Blacks who refuse to behave in a manner to achieve progress for themselves and their children have chosen their miserable condition. The laws of Nature will eventually extinguish them. Society does not owe the miscreants anything.
