From The Root:

“I don’t want our schools turned over to some socialist movement,” Brett Curtis, a parent in Texas told the New York Times last week. He said he would keep his three children home from school rather than have them listen to President Barack Obama’s speech to the nation’s school children.

Jim Greer, the Republican Party chairman in Florida, said he “was appalled that taxpayer dollars are being used to spread President Obama’s socialist ideology,” according to the Times. And a political commentator on the Rush Limbaugh show compared President Obama to Saddam Hussein and Kim Jong-il, the communist North Korean leader.

For the past few days as news outlets have reported on school districts and principals around the country being inundated with calls and e-mails from angry parents demanding that President Obama’s speech today not be broadcasted to their children, the story line has been that partisan politics was driving the controversy. What has not been as widely discussed, however, is how much the president’s race has also factored in the debate as the underlying force driving the parents’ outrage. It may be subtle, but the message is clear to any thinking person listening to the angry parents. Not only do they oppose a supposed socialist lecturing their children, they also don’t want a black man doing it, even if he is their president.

What’s most irksome about this fake controversy is the level of hypocrisy and intellectual dishonesty being exhibited by the parents protesting President Obama’s alleged attempts to indoctrinate their children using subliminal messages cloaked in socialist ideology.

I can’t beleive that people are finding this offensive. For pete’s sake the Prez is a father himself and he wants kids to understand the importance of school now and down the road. I think it was a great idea and i don’t have a problem with my kids seeing it if it was broadcasted. For those who find it offensive what the hell you going to tell your kids before they leave out of their home on the first day. Probably nothing. lol I applaud him for his efforts but to throw a fit over it folks is ridiculous and sad. I about died when they say he is trying to brainwash their kids. So telling a child to get good grades and stay in school is brainwashing and sending a hidden message. Please! I guess those parents want their kids to be stuck in the trailer parks forever not growing up to be better than what they are. I guess keep working on that pig farm then.

It’s sad when you feel President Obama’s speech is offensive. How in the hell do you no that it’s offensive when you hadn’t heard it. You take “young johnny” who curse you out, grows up to be a drunk, can’t read, remains uneducated, can’t find a job, etc., so to have the President of the United States tell your child to stay in school, etc., then their is definitely something wrong with the parent(s). We have some sick people out there!

My granddaughter just called me excited about the speech.

I did not hear the speech yet but I can only speak about my opinion of the matter. If the president is speaking to the youth about education, staying in school, and doing better so they can live a better life; and it just happens to enlighten many young minorities in the inner city, wouldn’t you as a racisit bigot have a problem with it as well?

It’s okay for white children to listen to speeches like killing obama, his wife and two little girls, blacks are inferior, blacks people are monkeys, speeches that are racist, that make it okay to treat blacks like animals, blacks should’nt have healthcare, whites are the superior race, whites own this country, whites were right to commit all the genocide they have unleashed on this planet, just like it was alright to turn lynchings into picnics for their children.destruction, persecution, killing all other creatures hunting them down,! But do not let our children be talked down to by a n****r,especially a n****r president that we want to kill.

This just shows how racist white america is. Bush could push his agenda of lies and deception and not one white person said a single thing. Obama just talks to school kids about the choices that they should make to become productive people in today’s society and there’s controversy. That’s bulls**t pure and simple!! I heard the speech and I still think that white people are full of s**t!

America! the beautiful? this seems pretty damn ugly to me..Funny, how none of these RW commentators or these same parents who have a problem with Obama speaking to their children, had a problem with Bush’s NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND program, which among many things, required schools to give access to names and phone numbers of students to military recruiters…How come no one was talking about indoctrinating our children then? The problem is, most things are not only race based in America, buy highly politicized, typically leads to high levels of hypocrisy, on BOTH SIDES!

Don’t be angry folks. We all knew this would happen when the brother was elected. Don’t be surprised. White folks have been acting this way for years and they’re not going to change, nor is this country going to change. We (black folks) are just as racist as they are. When Bush was in office, I labeled him a racist AND an idiot. White folks felt differently about him and that’s their right. Now, there’s a president that I like, support and want to see do well, and they don’t like him. I didn’t like Bush for several reasons and my reasons are no different than the reasons white folks don’t like Obama. I really don’t care how white folks feel about President Obama. I’m not seeking their approval, don’t want their approval, and most certainly don’t NEED their approval, so to HELL with what they think, say or do. As far as the speech that he gave to the students…my way of thinking tells me that ALL children should have been allowed and required to watch the speech, and if the parents disagreed with anything that he said, it’s up to THEM, as parents to educate the child on what they think is right and wrong. NOBODY can influence my children like I can. I watched the speech with my 9 year old daughter and had I told her that he was wrong about everything he said, I could have influenced her to agree with me. I, ALONE, influence my children, NOT the President. My point is, let the children listen to what the President has to say, discuss it with them, point out what you think was wrong with his speech and why, and educate your children. Why would you deny your child the right to listen to a historical speech by the President of the United States?

    Whats up my people?
The Presidents speech should have been a manditory watch for our kids.
I read the speech and love the message.I think that Mr. Obama was trying to set the pace for this school year. Its no different than what i tell my kids everyday. That if you want to be the best it takes hard work.We as a community have to turn the focus back to our kids.Turn off the Tv and as a Family strive to better ourselves.Who cares if some whites felt it nessary to keep their kids home. The question is did you and your kids watch it?
