I guess black voters learned a lesson. Don’t vote for someone based on the color of their skin, vote for them if you believe they hold the values you do. On the flip side, he is the President of the United States not Black United States. A lot of our problems can be solved within our own home. It’s the parents responsibility to ensure their children understand the importance of school and how it will pay off during their adult years. It’s the parent’s job to ensure their children don’t go after the fast money that can lead to jail time and ruin their futures but to focus on the long term goal of steady income and good credit. Obama is not Jesus or King of The United States. These problems existed long before he took office. Funny how he has not solved in 11 months what we collectively won’t attack together as a group. Perhaps that same energy used to elect him should be used to help each other. I think this will bring remarkable progress to our causes.

Healthcare will help the black community, but eating right and prevention is on us not the government. Better schools will help the black community, but pushing our children to their best potential is on us not government. Fair sentencing will help the black community, but protecting and encouraging our children that shortcuts and instant gratification can lead to destruction is on us not government.

I know I could do more to help the community, and I dare say millions of us could do more too. It’s not necessary money. Time is just as important.

In a recent interview, Obama said that the stimulus money used to save the jobs of teachers, firemen, and cops, also benefited the black community. Is that statement a lie? No. But the more intellectual question is, exactly how MANY African Americans did it benefit? The US Dept of Labor says that the majority of African Americans work in retail and manufacturing – not the aforementioned professions listed by the President. So, where is the help for those people?

When you say Obama is doing a good job, exactly what do you mean? What has he done that’s so great? Did he close Gitmo? No. Did he bring the troops home? No. Is there going to be a public option in the final health care bill? Don’t count on it. Is mandating insurance coverage, without including a public option, going to drive up the cost of insurance premiums? My money says it will! And finally, have you read the health care bill that passed the Senate? Do you understand the nuances of it? I doubt it. If you did, you wouldn’t be so quick to ride Obama’s jock.

I’d be more concerned if he was doing something to hurt Black America, but no reasonable individual can say that he is. The issues he’s chosen to deal with this year are relevant to everybody, including black folk; so I wouldn’t call him indifferent to black folk just because he hasn’t chosen to address uniquely black issues. In fact, I would question what issues Black America has that are both unique and completely under the control of the president. Most issues that the president can deal with like the unemployment rate, crime, public health, and crime are issues that affect everybody, thus his policies should reflect that.
