gay_rights_are_civil_rights_button-p145698241730625735q37f_400

From the Washington Post:

Their refrain was as familiar to me as dining hall food, and equally as offensive. All too often, white liberal classmates at the University of Virginia would ask, “Shouldn’t blacks, more than any other group, support gay rights?”

I never understood my classmates’ need to align the historical struggles of blacks with those of homosexuals and then push their quadratic equation of oppression on me. Was not one point of Ralph Ellison’s “Invisible Man,” a classic text for college seminars, that blacks deserve an existence free from an assigned role? That they should not be pawns in any social movement? And even if they hadn’t read the book, wasn’t it clear that stereotypical assumptions based on race are regressive?

RELATED: OPINION: Black Voters Should View Gay Marriage As A Civil Rights Issue

Hearing that from my white peers was one thing — they and I often viewed race through different lenses, with mine being one shade darker than rose. But last month, one of our greatest civil rights leaders also sang the same cacophonous tune in an attempt to peg African Americans’ morals and opinions to our socio-historical identities.

“Black people, of all people, should not oppose equality,” Julian Bond, the chairman of the NAACP, declared at the National Equality March in Washington.

RELATED: Black Voters Drove Gay Marriage Ban? Online Debate Rages

To be clear, Bond has used this line several times, and when he says “equality,” he isn’t talking about the right to vote, the right to eat at a public restaurant, the right to attend an integrated school or the right to a fair trial. He is talking about the right to change the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples.

Gays have it twisted..at least they NEVER had been disenfranchised like our forefathers did 3 centuries ago; What’s so great abouit a man wants to bang another man, or woman to woman, then get married? they have their own clubs that ANYONE would go to, but not me: I like big butt with v****as, not dicks!

Exactly. Between drugs, too many young parents (who haven’t taught how to parent themselves), overly-liberal attitudes, irresponsible black men, and the lack of value placed on education, the black family has been decimated enough…we simply cannot afford to adopt another reason for further dissolution, even at the expense of other people’s “rights.” There was a time when a true minority were people who were victims of violence, who had a history of being disenfranchised politically and socially, and who were simply ostracized because they were born different than the majority. NOW, everybody with a hangnail on their thumb is a “minority.”

GAY RIGHTS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT. I DONT KNOW IF GAYS SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO GET MARRIED, BUT TO TRY AND CONNECT GAY RIGHTS TO THE CIVIL RIGHT MOVEMENT IS WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS. GAYS ARENT DENIED WHERE THEY CAN GO TO SCHOOL…GAYS ARENT DENIED WHERE THEY CAN LIVE…GAYS ARENT MADE TO USE SEPARATE WATER FOUNTAINS, HOTELS, ENTRANCES, ETC.

I def. agree w/ this….being gay and black is 2 different things….one is almost immediately disguished upon sight….the other may take further observation thats as far as physically. Historically…gays were enslaved and sold. True, they may have been persecuted…but black ppl were persecuted FULLY. Gay Straight or in between. I have no prob w/ gay ppl…but Stop using us as your “get outta jail free” card!

I must say you all bring up great points but yo all have no clue of the struggles that we as GAY people as u all like to put it go through. I am Gay black and I live in America and I did not choose to be gay nor was I abused or anything like that. I grew up in a loving home with both a mother and a father and I am still GAY. But youcan’t compare the two Civil right movement and the GAY right movement because they are on two different issues. When blacks faught for the right to be able todo the same thing as whites and Gay fighting to be able todo the same thing as the rest of the world they are two different things. We as BLACK gay men and women get percicuted more by our own kind than anyother race when will you all learn life is not about who you sleep with when you go into your own home where you pay the bills. I must say this as well if you dont like gay people then turn off the TV stop buying cloaths cause most of them are made by gay men we are not fighting for just marriage we are fighting for the right to be free just as those who faught to free slaves, we are in a fight to be able to marry whome ever we like just as those who faught for Black to marry whites, we are in a fight not just for GAYS but for everyone this is AMERICA and we too have rights we are people Black, White, Latin every race in America and like my grandmother told me everyone can’t tell the same lie and GOD makes no mistakes.

OK WE GET IT, BLACK PEOPLE ARE THE MOST HOMOPHOBIC & HOSTILE PEOPLE, THE CRUELTY THEY HAVE FACED HAS HARDENED THEIR HEARTS, DISABLED THEIR COMPASSION, CRIPPLED THEIR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND OTHER PPL WHO FACE A STRUGGLE & HAS ROYALLY F**KED THEIR ABILITY TO BAND TOGETHER. BECAUSE WE’RE GAY WE DON’T DESERVE RIGHTS, BECAUSE WE’RE NOT DOING WHAT SOCIETY WANTS US TO DO, WE’RE NOT CITIZENS AND WE DO NOT DESERVE EQUALITY, MARRIAGE OR ANY RIGHTS THAT STRAIGHT PPL HAVE BECAUSE WE AREN’T WORTHY. IF YOU DIDN’T CATCH THE WHIFF OF SARCASM THERE…YOU’RE MOST LIKELY AN IGNORANT HOMOPHOBIC BLACK PERSON. BLACK PPL WERE TREATED HORRIBLY, YES THAT’S TRUE AND NO ONE IS( OR AT LEAST I’M NOT ) SAYING BOTH ( GAY RIGHTS & BLACK RIGHTS ) SITUATIONS ARE IDENTICAL ( EVEN THOUGH CIVIL PERTAINS TO CITIZENS, WHICH WE ARE )BUT WE ARE CITIZENS OF AMERICA & AMERICA IS SUPPOSED TO BE THE “LAND OF THE FREE”..RIGHT? HOWEVER, AS A GAY WOMAN, I AM NOT 100% FREE. YES I CAN USE A PUBLIC RESTROOM, SIT ANYWHERE IN A MOVIE THEATER, EAT WHEREVER I CHOOSE, BUT I CANNOT MARRY THE WOMAN I LOVE! YOU AS A BLACK (((((STRAIGHT)))) MAN OR WOMAN CAN DO THAT! YOU’RE 100% FREE!! AND NOW YOU’RE TELLING OTHER PEOPLE THEY SHOULDN’T HAVE A RIGHT?? THE WHITE PEOPLE BELIEVED YOU WEREN’T WORTHY OF FREEDOM, JUST AS YOU BELIEVE WE AREN’T WORTHY OF OUR RIGHTS… YOU’RE NO BETTER THAN THEY WERE. AS A GAY BLACK WOMAN, I HAVE TO FACE, BLACK, WHITE, LATIN, ASIAN PEOPLE OF ALL COLORS, ETHNIC BACKGROUNDS & CULTURES TELLING ME I AM UNWORTHY OF EXPRESSING MY LOVE FOR ANOTHER PERSON IN THE ULTIMATE FORM: MARRIAGE. OUR STRUGGLE IS GREATER THAN ANYONE ELSE’S.

first of all racism was taught to down grade a race or group of ppl,a child wasn’t born being racist, unless there’re pointed to that direction, now when a child grow up seeing a majority of natures life to know how to be fruitful,so know we’re trying to put a different view for the world to see and accept to make a new popular way so it wont be a shock to the mind(gay).we must come with a more psycology way for it,because growing up knowing whats nature fruitfull life order is which is already popular, expect more than what you can handle as a man and woman.

@-DRINKACIDandDIEHOE- and @Truth_009: ya’ll said basically what I was thinking. Everybody deserves their rights as American citizens (aka civil rights) but unfortunately there are so many closed minded people who don’t think so.
I don’t think it should be compared fully to the civil rights movement, let me get that straight now, but everyone has rights and to deny them of those rights is wrong. Period.

Soo many women are out there afraid of marring a man who is on the qoute “Down low” however thoses same men on the down low are just gay men who want the nomailty of a family and kids and are pressured by society to marry a women to have that comfort, but that same gay man can not supress his true feeling and goes outside of his home to be with another man and that same woman end up heart broken. Ppl if you let ppl be themselves there would be a lot les deciet in the world. Why does who someone else marry bother you soo much? A right is a right regardless of who or what a person is. Know one trying to use Black ppl rights as a pawn however there are black gay ppl that are still without full freedom so I guess you as black ppl think it ok to leave you black sister or brother behind because of who they wanna marry? And you wonder why other race view us as savages. Dogs care more about there own then we do. Were just do busy trying to down other and do the same to them as other has done to us. When will you realise GOD says he is the judge, I don’t remember anywhere in the history books it saying he gave you the right to decied someone else fate in life not even ur childern.

The bottom line is..if that is what you feel comfort in being this way then what myself and others feel shouldn’t matter. rather than forcing on or seeking acceptance on heterosexuals, and or comparing African American struggles of 400 plus years of oppression, with this social struggle. These folks should seek God’s love first and everything else will follow. I do not have to insult homosexuals on the differences of why our struggle differs, but in most cases I don’t that you are ,gay unless u tell me that u are.and this is where we differ. Until we resolve society’s problems with our people as a whole, then we should not stop and be used as convience tools of comparison. Gay or straight love YOURSELF.

GAY BLACK PEOPLE ARE BE PLAYED OUT. THERE ARE TWICE AS MANY GAY WHILE PEOPLE AS THERE ARE BLACK. SO ALL THE RIGHTS THEY WANT ARE REALLY JUST GOING BACK TO THE WHITE SUPREMECY PLAN. WHAT WE NEED TO DO IS STOP TRYING TO SIMULATE EUROPEAN CULTURE.ALL THIS GAY-BI SEXUAL STUFF COMES FROM THE GREEK, AND ROMAN CULTURE. BLACK PEOPLE GOT NOTHEN TO DO WITH THAT. INFACT THEY ARE THE FIRST TO RAPE AND PILLAGE OUR CULTURE AND REPLACE IT WITH MURDER, HOMOSEXUALITY, THIEVERY, DESTRUCTION, AND MAYHAM. IM NOT PARTICIPATING IN GAY RIGHTS WHAT SO EVER, HOWERVER I WILL TAKE PART IN A BILL THAT HELPS ARE MEN TURN BACK INTO FATHER, AND WOMEN TURN BACK INTO MOTHERS.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ur_little_secretTS/ Ur_little_secretTS

I Can’t believe I’m hearing this….First tool in making a intelligent response to this: Remembering that all struggles in civil rights are the same, simply for the fight towards equality. Furthermore, we as Black Americans will not progress until we stop telling everyone else that there struggles in civil equality isn’t the same. The Holocaust, The Native Americans, Gay Rights, Immigration Rights (I hear a lot of us black people saying to them what was once said to us: Go back where you came from!)It pains me to read what I have read on here-str8 folks still feel like we want ACCEPTANCE from them! What we DEMAND from other humans like ourselves-is RESPECT!!!! Respect for our struggle, that is still going on a strongly and as painful as it was even in biblical times. I know a lot of you anti-rainbows feel like we should all disappear one day, but we just are not! We will continue exist as long as you keep having this underlined discourse for our communities…besides, you can’t kill us all. More importantly, stop making Gay peoples right to marriage about YOU-How many black people DO YOU KNOW that are married first, children after? Case closed. Better yet, blame it on the gays, you blamed HIV and AIDS on us, you won’t let the “DOWN LOW” thing go for crying out loud, finally we as black people can hate someone else and discriminate some other group of people they way its been done to us. Yea, talk about recompense…However, after saying all of that. I do believe that someone is using the struggle of Black America as a rude and offensive comparison to Gay Rights….only because each situation in civil rights should be treated individually, regardless of similarities.

Are they not Black, because they are not straight? No, seriously, is that what you think?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/StarrSantiago/ StarrSantiago

    Surprisingly, I agree with Rock42063…

I’m all for tax paying citizens exercising their rights, but as my mama put it “Everything in life isn’t meant to be fair”. With that said, I think it’ll be a while before gays are nationally given the right to marry. I also highly applaud the author of this article for saying exactly how I feel about this situation. All to often, Blacks are constantly are being pawns to everyone else’s struggles. A lot of this stems from our high rate of success and others envying and vying for that success.

The illegal immigrant community is infamous for trying to use us (the very community that they despise) for their own plight…and all the while by trying to take our jobs & housing away from us.

    Go figure :)

EVERYONE… please don’t take this the wrong way, but…
WE have two different cars here that need/ed to cross the same bridge in this topic. and i think the ‘WRITER’ is just saying there needs to be a different approach in taking a gain to the civil rights moment to gay marriage.
If you think about it… WE as black people alone STILL continue the struggle against small minded people just by our skin color alone. if anything being gay would be the next level. in truth there not too many people that can put 20-30 people in a room and pick out EVERYONE who was gay… but let there be only one black guy in a room with 20-30 people and let the stereotypes fly!!! LOL People are JUST STARTING to get over their own prejudices with black people… WE barely cross borders with white people to make black acceptable.
Slavery in any form has waaay more history being a problem/issue than with being Gay, not to mention these are much different times… DONT GET ME WRONG… civil rights movements pretty much start the same… but the path needed to take action is going to be much more different in this society. We are talking about a whole different level of Heter or Homo phobia here…

Ok some idiot made a comment about gay ppl trying to suduce them and that we as gay ppl need to talk to God, well let me educate you on something, first of all th typoic has nothing to do with someone trying to suduce anyone, and I’m so tired of you homofobs assuming because someone is gay that they want you, we like anyone else have taste and mojority of us if we are with someone we are faithful. Soo please stop assumeing we want you futher more knowone is wanting your approval on anything just the respest we deserve as a ppl. I don’t pressue being gay on you nor shall u have the right to pressue ur belife on me. Also this same person stated we just need to talk to God, I talk to him every night, morning and evening. Just as he doesn’t approve of me being gay he doesn’t of adultry, sex before marrige or children before marrige so should that be ban too? Yes let get to together and throw all the gays, unmarried sexually active ppl, men not providing for themselfs or family in jail! Oh wait that would be over 80% precent of america. I am American from the root of my hair to the bottom of my feet some of you make me ashamed to be black or even human for that matter, think about what you say before u say it……….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/lottahips4u/ lottahips4u

Oh my God i Couldn’t have said that better Stop using black people as pawns in the gay marriage fight it offends me when i hear people comparing black people struggle to gay people struggle and calling gay the new black how lame is that anything to justify the means now in no way shape or form do i agree with gay bashing but i also don’t agree with our struggle being compared to their struggle weather people like my comment or not we have no choice but to deal with our color of our skin where as a homosexual person could just not say what their bedroom preference is and at the end of the day it is a choice black people don’t have a choice but to be what we were born as black people and that can’t be hidden As i said once before i believe we all have a fight to fight in this life so while i don’t agree with homosexuality i don’t tear them down i take it as maybe that’s there fight to fight against within themselves as we all have something we are dealing with.

Duh dumb dumbs … we know being gay is not the same as being black. However, it is history repeating itself in a different form. Discrimination, hate crimes, de facto and de juro discrimination, etc. Damn how quickly we forget. IT’s really a shame…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/TMAC_35000/ TMAC_35000

Yasmine086, nobody’s forgetting anything, especially that there was never any gays out fighting for black folks.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NICOLETI/ NICOLETI

Discrimination is discrimination and what they mean is we as black people should realize what it is like to be discriminated against by a nation and have it be socially accepted to be told that we are less than. Who is to say that gays were not out there in the civil rights movement fighting for black rights? I mean a majority of the white people that accepted and supported blacks back then were probably the gays, they were just in the closet at the time. If you let someone discriminate against another and do nothing about it…. where will it stop at. It is like a joke a comic once said, I think it was Chris Rock. When the 911 attacks happened people were saying things like “We proud to be Americans, F you terrorist” Then it was “F you Middle Easterners and Mexicans” He said he started to pay attention because he knew what was eventually coming. That train is never late he said and it did come and is in the station as we speak. Blacks with college educations are the hardest hit by economy right now. Going to an HBCU might make it 70% harder to get a job, just because they see the name of your school on the application. If we sit back and let one group be discriminated against we open the door for more possibilities in the future. No one is saying that being black and being gay are the same thing. If the nation tells you you can not marry someone based on their skin color, it would be clear cut dicrimination. Yet we sit back and say it is not when they say it about a person’s sexual orientation. It is discrimination and you are a black man/woman should know how it feels to have a nation hate you for something you can not control. You did not choose to be black and they did not choose to be gay. It is not a choice, if it was then at what age did you choose to be straight. I mean were you masturbating to a pic of someone of the same sex and then decide that you were only going to get excited for people of the opposite sex. Where you ever attracted to same sex people and then decided to not persue those feelings. If it is a choice for them, then it is a choice for us as well. I know I never wanted to muff dive and I was born Hetero.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NICOLETI/ NICOLETI

It was law that a black person could not marry a white person. Should we revert back to that law, since it does not stop black people from voting, going into certain restaurants, going to integrated schools, or have somewhat fair trials. I mean it is the same difference.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/airforceboston/ airforceboston

i personally don’t think they have anything to do with each other but the fact its a form of discrimination. but that’s where it ends a persons skin and sexuality is two different things. when i go out everyone knows im black but a gay person lets people know if they are or not. and marriage has nothing to do with civil rights its a religious act and last time i checked religion is suppose to be separate from the government so its wrong to force churches to do something they don’t believe in. and last but not least blacks was killed and still are killed over thier skin color as there is a number of laws to protect them

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/toodelicious4u/ toodelicious4u

Damn! I didn’t even know that gays and lesbians existed back in the Billie, and Langston days!!! Back to the point…. This articles statement about blacks should strongly support the gays, is a bunch of bullshyt! Just because we struggle to get to where we are doesn’t mean we should support everyone else choice and decisions! That’s just as dumb as saying that, because whites finally came together and started supporting minorities that, they should support everything as well! Its dumb and it’s two different situations!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/toodelicious4u/ toodelicious4u

This is for NICOLETI!!!!! I understand what you are saying but, WE cant support every new decision that comes along! All because a person dislikes something doesn’t mean that they’re discriminating against it! I work around racist people a lot but, they don’t walk around all day say’n she don’t deserve a position with the company because she’s BLACK!!! One point you made was in fact right! WE don’t choose what race we want to be so yes, We have no choice but to be black! However, a person can make a decision on their sexual preference! You don’t come out ya mama’s belly say’n ‘I wanna be gay!!!!’ You have to grow and experience life before you can make that decision! Therefore being gay is a choice!

And what pisses me off with the ignorance of black folks is that white ppl (illuminati, freemassons, devilworshippers) are responsible for this brain washing of today’s society. Did yall know that while they were elimanting black men from the strong black families of our african ancestors that to strip them of their manhood, whites also raped black men therefore pumping that homosexuality into the minds of strong black men that we had for leadership back in the day. Bravo! When ppl used to say that this was the white man’s Yall done let these white folks win all these yrs and now the 1st black as the president will still be under the white man’s power to lead and destroy and dumb black folks still have not gotten a clue.
