From The Root:

This weekend Houston made history, electing Anisse Parker the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. The Texan coup was a clear victory for advocates of civil rights and marriage equality, but also stands to erode the consistent—and incorrect—presumption that black Americans are reflexively anti-gay. Parker won the runoff election with nearly 54 percent of the vote in a city that is 25 percent African American—against an African-American opponent, no less. Despite a series of mailings and smears targeted at Parker and engineered by conservatives, the 40 percent of black voters who were undecided in mid-October seem to have gravitated toward Parker and pushed her over the top. What’s more, late-stage polls suggest that 77 percent of voters “didn’t care about Parker’s sexuality.”

Black Americans should be glad of this outcome. Parker will, by all accounts, prove a competent and energetic executive and a Democratic foil to neo-secessionist Governor Rick Perry. And this victory is an opportunity to openly affirm the solidarity on civil rights and equal representation that has been the bedrock of social progress in the country.

I’m bout sick of this site and it’s race stories. My question is this, wasn’t there only a 16% voter turn out for the city anyway? I could’ve sworn I read that. If it’s true, than this really isn’t about race or sexual orientation at all. It’s about a city that does not care who it’s being ran by, and THATS what this story should be about. When only 16% of a voting population turn out for something that important, it says to me neither person running was a good choice to begin with. In THAT regard, the fact that she won says very little about her merit, her capability, or the peoples belief in her as a strong leader. Hell, someone made Sarah Palin govenor, too! LOL. Hmmm, I’m going to have to read on this some more. The more I think about it the more questions I have. Poor story Newsone, very poor.

There is absolutely NO reason that BLACK people need to celebrate this and I’m not saying that we should be angry about it either, but a gay woman winning an election doesn’t represent shyt for black people!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/E2THEB/ E2THEB

ok they elected a gay mayor in houston. what i dont understand is why news one has a photo gallery of 13 famous african american people who are or was gay? that is nothing for black america to be proud of, any race for that matter.to my black people, YOU STAND FOR SOMETHING OR FALL FOR ANYTHING. and it seems since there has been alot of acceptance of being gay. i wonder if the movies, television, and music has anything to do with it.<<<<—–some muslims believe that hollywood comes from holy wood which was the magicians stick in pagan times that put people in trances. is that whats going on today? its ok in the movies to be gay and cross dress so its ok in reality, its ok to talk and sing about it in music so its ok act like what we see on music videos. WAKE UP BLACK PEOPLE AND REMEMBER THAT KNOWLEDGE AND WISDOM IS THE ABSENCE OF ALL CONFUSION

NewsOne needs to be removed/dismantled, whatever. The articles are always race baiting: divide and conquer on the largest Black online community. It’s apparent that the staff is basically non-Black based on the topics that permeate this site.

Why would a gay ANYTHING in politics make others believe Blacks should celebrate? This gay woman won the election running against a Black person. Black doesn’t make a person a gay, and being gay surely is not equivalent to being born Black. You can hide your gayness; one cannot hide his/her skin tone (as we see with Tiger Woo). And, have you people forgotten that some gay people are Black and every other ethnic group in the world, including KKK members. Stop insulting my intelligence pushing this Gay Rights = Black Rights BS. Whoever wrote this article should be fired. You are an ignorant loser.

Why should we as African Americans celebrate this or be happy? I don’t want a gay individual running my city. I live here in Houston and I am a registered voter. I voted for Gene Locke. This city already has enough problems with homosexuals male and females and a very weak economy. I was not happy with the outcome. This is a negative look for H-Town.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/3RDWARDHTOWN/ 3RDWARDHTOWN

@blkman Ididnt vote for her we had a good Dem in the Blk man (Locke) so talk what you know. @ Purpl Flames we always have and will have hope what about NC?@Califemma I agree with you wholeheartedly about the gay issue but you should take som pride in a Black Prz=ez even if you doon’t like him.Y? Because it at least open the doors for Black man you might like one day damn! I agree with King and Tmac. H-town out

I’m confused why are we supposed to be celebrating again? What does black have to do with being gay? Please lets not bandwagon on an issue that does nothing politically to help our economy. We need more money, jobs and better healthcare i will banwagon on that.

Why does the media always try to compare Civil Rights and Gay rights as if the two should be linked together whenever either is spoken of? Let’s be honest about homosexuality. It is nothing more then a lust filled expression of ones desire to engage in an perverse form of sex. In other words “YOU CHOOSE”, yes “IT IS THE CHOICE” of two or more people that can and should NEVER be compared to the issues, struggle and/or pains that people of color have been forced to endure in times past and today. Never has a gay person been hung from a tree or burned alive for the entertainment of a town while men, women and children cursed, cheered and encoursged their deaths. No gay person has been seperated from their parents and sold for mere profit or been whipped and degraded while their family watched and prayed with hopes that their life would be spared. GET REAL! Black Americans being gald that this gay white women is mayor, PLEASE. Why should I/we care. Truth be told, I don’t understand why anyone should be concerned about the state of her bedroom as much as if she will lead Houston to a better economical and social state. If she is gay or not should not be the bases for her election, but the question should be “WHAT”S BEST FOR HOUSTON?” and GOD WILL DEAL WITH THE REST.

THIS IS PART OF A GREATER CONSPIRACY TO LEGITIMIZE HOMOSEXUALITY AND THEY ARE USING THE BLACK COMMUNITY TO DO IT. IN NO WAY DOES MAKING SOCIETY ACCEPT SOMEONE AS A HOMO BENEFIT THE BLACK COMMUNITY AS A WHOLE. IF ANYTHING, IT CONTRIBUTES TO THE DYSFUNCTIONALITY OF OUR EXISTENCE IN THIS COUNTRY. ITS A SHAME WHEN YOU LOOK AROUND AND SEE DISGUSTING WOMEN HOLDING HANDS AND TONGUE KISSING IN PUBLIC IN OUR COMMUNITIES AND ARE QUICK TO DISRESPECT THE BLACK MAN. THIS SOCIETY HAS IT SET UP THAT WAY BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN MADE EASIER FOR THEM TO DO SO. EVERY SINGLE GROUP THAT TRIES TO ASSERT THEMSELVES IN THIS SOCIETY WILL ALIGN THEMSELVES WITH THE BLACK COMMUNITY. THEY WILL COME TO OUR COMMUNITIES AND TAKE WHAT THEY NEED BUT WONT BE WILLING TO GIVE BACK. IN NO WAY, SHAPE OR FORM DOES HOMOSEXUALITY AND THE STRUGGLE TO BE GAY COMPARES TO OUR STRUGGLE FOR SURVIVAL THROUGHOUT THE CENTURIES. THIS COMPARISON AND ATTEMPT FOR ALIGNMENT NEEDS TO BE PUT TO A STOP. ITS FUNNY HOW YOU SEE BLACK POLITICIANS AND SO-CALLED BLACK RELIGIOUS LEADERS CLAPPING HANDS FOR HOMOSEXUALS AND PRAISING NEW LAWS THAT SUPPORT WOMEN TAKING HIGH PAYING JOBS FROM MEN BUT NEVER REALLY DOING ANYTHING OTHER THAN TALKING ABOUT THE REAL NEEDS OF OUR COMMUNITY. THEY WILL SIT THERE AND TRY TO DEGRADE US BY CONTINUOUSLY SAYING THAT WE NEED TO BE RESPONSIBLE (SOMETHING MOST OF US KNOW AND RECOGNIZE ALREADY) BUT AREN’T REALLY DOING ANYTHING TO SPUR JOB AND BUSINESS GROWTH AND GREATER EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES IN OUR COMMUNITY. WE NEED TO GET TOGETHER AND STOP VOTING FOR POLITICIANS AND GOING TO CHURCHES IN OUR COMMUNITIES THAT SUPPORT HOMOSEXUALITY. ITS ANOTHER FACTOR THAT’S BEING USED TO UNDERMINE THE BLACK MAN AND CONTRIBUTE TO THE DESTRUCTION AND BREAKUP OF THE BLACK COMMUNITY AND IT WILL ONLY HAPPEN IF WE LET IT. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS ISSUE AND WE NEED TO GO AGAINST WHAT OUR CHILDREN ARE LEARNING IN SCHOOL AND TEACH THEM THE VALUES OF FAMILY AND HOW IMPORTANT IT IS FOR MEN AND WOMEN TO FULFILL THEIR ROLES IN SOCIETY. IT IS NOT OK TO BE GAY OR LIVE THAT LIFESTYLE. ITS A SIN AND ITS DISGUSTING. IF WE ALLOW THIS TO GO ON THERE WILL NOT BE A BLACK COMMUNITY 100 YEARS FROM NOW. I CAN ASSURE THAT THIS GAY WHITE WOMAN IN HOUSTON WILL DO NOTHING FOR THE BLACK PEOPLE WHO ARE LIVING THERE. ITS A SIN AND A SHAME WHAT WE ARE DEALING WITH IN THESE TIMES. WE HAVE TO BAN TOGETHER AND FIGHT NEGATIVITY IN ALL ITS FORMS. THIS ISN’T AN EASY STRUGGLE.

Now the question is can she hold it. In two years, a more conservative opponent will be picked to run against Ms. Parker and may win. She is going to have to mobilize the Black vote in Houston. 11% of the Blacks voted on November. She will have to reach out them.

Cheer for what? Celebrate a white woman winning an election? It is insulting to compare 400 years of this racist decadent society, to sexual selection. Enough is enough already and to Tyra and Wendy, get off the bulls**t!

black voters and black people period should not view gay marriage as a civil rights issue-gays/homosexuals have not had to have legislation passed so that they could vote; they have never experienced jim crow; they have not been stolen from their homeland and forced into inhumane chattel slavery for 300 plus years;they have never been lynched; they have never had their homes burned down or fire bombed! how the hell can any one say that the struggle of gays/homosexuals is equal to the struggle of blacks? just because a white woman who is homosexual won an election is no reason for black folks to celebrate-they should have been supporting the black candidate regardless of wether they are any good or not. homosexuality is a choice, a person aint born that way and to think so is b.s-being black isn’t a choice that is how a person is born, homosexuals can decide to change their lifestyle at any moment however being black is a lifelong struggle. biblically homosexualty is an abomination. i dont believe homosexuals deserve equal treatment nor should states change or stipulate their laws to legalize gay marriage. i could rant on about this but black people need to rethink what we stand truly for.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/mrlosa/ mrlosa

The celebration shouldn’t be be about sexual preferences nor race. This celebration should be because of her gender, A woman. Since the beginning of time woman have been degraded, raped, enslaved, and stripped of any rights by every race and religion of man. mostly because of religion woman have been put in check and taught they are slaves of man, the true ni**ers of society. I would like to see more straight woman ( especially of color) in office not only in the USA but all over the world. We need more women for decision making in office The outcome would be more peaceful and positive, and religion will finally be defeated. Plus it would be sexy!

Back to the subject. Stop comparing race to sexual preference! Race is not a choice, your lifestyle is! Jim cant screw john and have a baby so there for your future offspring are not in civil rights jeopardy, just you are. If your gay cool, stop trying to make everyone notice you and kiss your a** because you are gay. Gay is a choice like what restaurant you want to eat at! Not like black people where they were forced to eat at a certain colored only restaurants. Once again Blackplanet.com not everything is a race issue!

Now im truly saying this is a racist blog, “blacks” and “gays.” When did they start comparing this s**t together. Gay is not right and I dont care who doesn’t like what im saying. God created man and woman!! It’s just nasty, why would a man want to hold a man or vice versa? I’m not saying I have a gay-phobiabt its just not right!! But as for the governor, im sure she didn’t not get picked because she was gay but then again, who knows? But i guess they are comparing the two because there are so many gays in the black community!!

Stop being so zealot! So what if she gay! Everyone in the LGBT Community had to fight for their rights during the civil rights movements and Stonewall Riots of the 60′s. It the 21st Century, not 1958!
I use to be very homophobic myself growing up cause I use to be brainwash by all those Christian Funndies, the media, and even in my own community, until I became tolerant to the LGBT Community.

PEOPLE, ALL OF YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED TO BE SO IGNORANT!!!
I voted for Annise because she has experiences being both a City Controller, fight Metro cause their service is terrible, fight spending and taxes over stupid like the Stadium, that was waste of money and sitting so long for the City of Houston. Yes, I volunteer with her campaign and she was a sweet person brought us food for hard work. NOT CAUSE SHE’S GAY, CAUSE OF HER DEDICATIONS!

Hell, I was disappointed with Bill White cause he wasn’t doing a damn thing!!!

    People, just stop it!!!

Making these sexual deviants appear normal is part of european culture. Just look at the catholic church (homosexual cult) and the Greeks. Homsexuality is not part of African culture nor should it be. It is offensive for individuals to try to aline African people with the abnormal behavior. Homsexuality will never be normal. Not in the eyes of real Black people. Sure, many are so excited to be seen as accepted by whites that they will fall in love with a white rat just to feel good about themselves. Yes, Africans may love the sinner but hate the sin. However, Real Black folks don’t support gay anything, so stop trying to push this s**t down our throats.

Thanks Y’all,Amen! I’m glad somebody’s speaking their mind and not afraid of being politically incorrect. The world is out of control. In the last days perilous times shall come……II Timothy 3:1-7

It’s not only the Gay community that’s trying to identify with the struggles of Black people, it’s also some of the other minorities,…Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, dark complexed Indians from India etc., riding on the coat tails of black people until thay get what they want, when they get what they want they don’t give a damn about us. Some of them don’t give a damn about us while they’re trying to get what they want. And when you make them mad will call you the “N” word in a minute. I just move to Georgia from up North and it’s everywhere down here, the south period, all nationalities moving from their country to escape the struggles and problems they have in their country, moving to the state of Martin Luther King for equality and to be accepted, and it’s all because of the struggles of black people, it’s like a little United Nations down here. Everybody wants to identify with the Black race but don’t want to accept us as equals.
