I have a low-key program for children in my community and I also have lots of kids come from dolton & roseland to come and hang out and do homework. To sum it up, i have seen nothing but positive changes in my kids. All of them changed their ways and are performing great academically now. IM ONLY 19! I just love interacting with people but this is still not enough. I am only 19 and I dont have kids because I dont want any and I’m not ready nor am I married. I should be focusing on my own problems and my own life. Its not fair that I and people like me have to go to greater extent and do stuff like this because people cant be a parent. How come this girl didn’t have enough self worth and sense to not put herself in such a dangerous situation. THIS IS NOT HER FAULT BUT IT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED.
Knowing this is a rough area why weren’t there patrols outside of the school?
What would make these young men behave in such a way. Having mothers, aunts, neices, sisters, and grandmas…but they stood by and watched…even participated?

It yakes a village to raise a child and when wretched heinous things like this happen, it doesn’t just fall into the laps of the criminals and the victim. It also rest on the shoulders of all of us.

They all play a role in life and where we go none of us are blind and none hard of hearing. That’s great to have something for the young folks it is a wonderful thing and no these artist and entertainers shouldnt be role models for our children. This one incident can go so deep but it is how deep can you really take it can you make any connections. Stop defending the issues at hand really. They all play a role people. As far as the videos there is music played behind each scene.. we have influences every where Rap music is one of them, Classical can be one of them. A particular movie can be one of them. The bible can be one of them. To understand that is to understand the mind and human emotion. In which I study.

One…STOP PLACING THE BLAME ON MUSIC
Or if you ARE going to blame it on some outside influence, then let it be more than just rap. Include television, movies, radio talk show hosts, athletes, and s**t, blame society as a whole while you’re at it. I’m almost 100% sure that any person commenting on this topic has listened to rap at one time or another, and while I know nobody personally, I am certain none of you all has been convicted of rape, as I am sure that many of you can differentiate between a reality and something that is simply said on a track, show, or whatever. It’s like mom used to say “if your friend told you to jump off of a bridge, would you?” Now let me be the first to say that while YES these things may have had some sort of influence, it was minimal at best, and ANY sort of guidance or parenting is generally going to refute ANY influence that rap or ANY media outlet can have…it’s entertainment people and should be treated as such and I do believe that is the point that has been forgotten. The problem arises when Scarface (Al Pacino), Gucci Mane, and a drug-addicted, man kissing, mumbo jumbo talking illiterate sounding idiot like Lil Wayne become deities and idols to many of the PARENTS of these children, and in turn the children themselves. What happened to being a damn parent?

SECOND…
At what point do we again become SOMEWHAT responsible for OUR OWN WELL BEING?!?!? Let me clarify again, this was a HORRIBLE situation and NOBODY deserves to get raped (which means that all of you cynics out there talking about how the boys should be “sent to prison and raped themselves…shot and killed with a bullet to the brain” or whatever are being a bit contradictory). With that said, the girl was under-aged, alone, and drinking…NOT A GOOD COMBINATION. This girl had no business drinking, particularly with strangers. In addition, who drinks when their parents are on the way to pick them up??? I am NOT saying that she deserved any of this again, but at what point does your better judgment take over? Stop treating these kids like idiots, many of them are smarter than ever and can take SOME responsibilities for themselves (not responsibility for being RAPED by any means, but again why drink and be alone with a bunch of males?) By no means was what happened to this girl acceptable, but I think we could ALL agree that if she was not drunk and alone then the chances of something like this happening drop dramatically. I mean how many of YOU walk around in urban, crime-ridden neighborhoods late at night by yourself holding wads of cash in your grip…none because it’s not smart. This also goes for those out here screaming that “THE LITTLE GIRL SHOULD BE ABLE TO WEAR WHATEVER THE F*CK SHE WANTS” which is all nice in theory, but in fact it CAN make you a target contrary to what you all are saying. What I’m saying is that things like this CAN be avoided, not every time because we do not live in a perfect world, and there are preventative measures that you can take to minimize the chances.
THIRD…
When did we as adults, people, and members of a community begin to stop caring ourselves?!? SO many adults could’ve done their jobs and prevented situations such as these. As someone pointed out, security was let go a half-hour before the event even ended??? If this is true, it seems to me to be a problem. The same goes for malfunctioning cameras on school grounds…again only speculating. I am SURE there were chaperones whose responsibility was the well-being of those children. I’m praying that nobody in their right mind purposely purchased alcohol for these high-school students. In doing so, not only are you setting a terrible example as a role model, but you are also leaving the door open for situations such as the one being discussed. I’ve seen adults and college students, myself included whose judgment has been clouded heavily by alcohol (thus it being a drug), so I can only imagine the effects that it may have had on the little girl involved which is part of the reason she had no business drinking. As for the not-so-innocent bystanders, they should be ashamed of themselves. So should anyone believing this “snitches get stitches” bull. Most don’t know, but the whole “stop snitching” crusade was actually meant for CRIMINALS snitching on OTHER CRIMINALS and doesn’t have much of a damn thing to do with us so stop following mindless nonsense.
In closing…
This was a heinous act and had no business happening, but the fact of the matter is that it DID and until we start approaching these things from ALL ends of the spectrum chances are they’ll continue to happen. There is PLENTY of blame and responsibility to go around, from the parents, to the adults who have stopped caring about their own neighborhoods and communities, to school officials who allowed these events to occur on SCHOOL GROUNDS (as stated in the video). The girl, who is not at FAULT, could have taken some steps that could have possibly prevented the situation…and if you don’t believe that, then you definitely live in some fantasy world. It is time for ALL of us to stop pointing the finger and start taking some responsibility rather than putting it on everybody else. Society didn’t get like this overnight. Many people point to the lack of male role-models, the lack of parents, and the lack of ANYbody who cares anymore…which is true. But at the same time, going around and SLEEPING with these “thugs” is not going to help the situation. A leopard doesn’t change its spots folks. Yes it sucks that some men (if you can call them that) do not believe in being a father to their kids, but it is the way of much of America nowadays, and until people stop SLEEPING these lames and having their offspring, nothing is going to change. To the guys, if you do not want to be a father, WEAR A RUBBER and take ALL necessary preventative matters to do just that…PREVENT IT. In addition, IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO BE A PARENT…STOP HAVING CHILDREN. These kids are not accessories used to accentuate the color of your boots and outfit. They are human beings who did not ask to be brought into this world, the least one (really two as it takes two to make one) is to make sure that you have instilled the proper values in YOUR child and given them to proper tools NEEDED to be successful in life. Yes people this means having TWO parents (yes single parents can be successful, but it’s about maximizing potential) At the end of the day, f*ck music, television, the news, media, and whomever else you want to place the finger on as the influential driving force behind the destruction of our society, we must remember that PARENTS still hold THE MOST INFLUENCE over ANY child, regardless of how much we’d like to THINK that this has changed…marinate on that and good day.

It was not a typo it was a clear drop from an outstanding and meaningful point to an uneducated move with language of terrible slang. you are CLAIMING people can’t look at it from different points of views and what you fail to realize is that people who are debating consider many other possible options. When you draw a conclusion you focus on the strongest of what you believe and draw the line. Ms. Feather you are correct :-) as I said before free had some really great points some he didn’t post but he is very educated! And like I thought got upset at the end lol but very passionate about the issue at hand. His posting actually made it all the way to church and I hope goes further. We should stand up for our young ones as we were once there and made bad choices paid for it and learned from it. I deal with rape victims all the time and I truely hope she can recover and not hold it against the future people to come into her life she is still above all innocent.

Many times it is not how you were raised it it what you are curious to see. Parents play a big role but I see many who didn’t have that guidance and make it far. Media is a form of communication and it plays a big role as well. Our parents assist we try things.

Back to the issue you at home. I just received a e-mail from a young lady that my group and I have been working with who went through the samething it was not in the new due to the “no snitching” rule. What she said touched me. One of the people who had done this to her had a younger family member that was rapped 2 years after the fact and tried to take her life. They are now both very good friends. Now the touching part was that she forgave the person who did rape her. She will never forget but she forgave. I thought that was so strong of her! I hope that this young girl can move on and live her life the way God intended.

Yall done strayed so far from the topic I don’t even know what to say. I will say this though; these cats need to get what they deserve. They did what they did, they knew it was wrong and I don’t give a damn why they did it. I love to see my people engage in educated reasoning. I agree with DaintyJen on all aspects. She was not saying rap music isn’t the reason, the true reason is people bringing children into this world and not handling their business. Regardless of how ugly it is out here, when a person decides to have children they need to realize that it isn’t about them. These are children committing these crimes. In this case, male teenagers performing violent sexual acts against female teenager. Then there is the lack of emphathy with regards to the on-lookers. That says a lot!!!!!! It simply means we can not isolate the behavior. There is a psychological problem here across the board. Parents are not raising their children with morals, principals and values. Video games promote violence and parents allow their children to play these games. Society promotes sex and encourages females (particulary young)to present themselves as sex objects through music, fashion and videos. It is hard to get children to do what their parents ask them to do, it is easy to get children to imitate their parents. Teach your children by example. End of story!
