Police Honor Cop Who Arrested Gates
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cambridge police Sgt. James Crowley received a standing ovation from thousands of police officers Monday as he opened a five-day Fraternal Order of Police convention with brief remarks.
Crowley, who is white, sparked a national debate on race relations and policing when he arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. for disorderly conduct at Gates’ home in Cambridge, Mass. Gates is black.
More than 3,000 police officers cheered Crowley when he spoke at the Long Beach Convention Center. Dozens left their seats to take snapshots of him as he stood at the podium.
“The past month has been very difficult for my family, my friends and my colleagues back in Cambridge, and it’s no exaggeration to say that it wouldn’t be as easy for me to handle this without the support from the Fraternal Order of Police … and the support that the men and women who do this job have given me,” he said. “Thank you very much.”
Crowley declined to comment further after leaving the stage.
Crowley arrested Gates on July 16. The officer was first to respond to the home the renowned black scholar rents from Harvard University, after a woman reported seeing two men trying to force open the front door. Gates said he had to shove the door open because it was jammed.
He was charged with disorderly conduct after police said he yelled at Crowley, accused him of racial bias and refused to calm down after Crowley demanded Gates show him identification. The charge was later dropped, but Gates demanded an apology and called the incident racial profiling.
Crowley has said he followed protocol and responded to Gates’ “tumultuous behavior” appropriately.
President Barack Obama further inflamed the debate when said at a nationally televised news conference that Crowley had “acted stupidly.” Obama later invited Gates and Crowley to the White House for a beer to bring all three men together.

This situation probably could’ve been handled much better. By working some officers, I hear quite a few mention how they treat and talk to people when they get on the scene. Some are very rude, arrogant and take their badge a little too seriously. However, there are some citizens who takes matters into their own hands and can be very uncooperative with police. None of us were there, so there’s really no way of knowing what really took place and how. There are always two sides to each story.
Was Gates disorderly? According to all reports, Yes. Should he have been arrested? Probably not. A disorderly conduct arrest is a collossal waste of time for everyone involved and is usually meant to send a message that certain behaviors won’t be tolerated. In other words toput someone in their place. I don’t have a problem w/any aspect of this incident except the fact that black people are praising this SGT. He is a supervisor. His job is to stop the officers under his command from doing what he did. People are always running off at the mouth, part of the job is to ignore that. Discretion is the better part of valor
First off im glad this happen to Henry louis Gates because he is a upity harvard professor who down the work of progressive people like Al sharpten and Louis Farrakan. Im sure Henry louis Gates felt he is above many blacks and that he shouldnt be subject to this kind of treatment because of his success, but now he has an eye opener. He can now better understands how unjust the justice system is. This is the same justice system that would say a prayer to god before they hung a black person. It has always been bias.
As far as Sgt. Crowley, he is wrong for what he did and still his actions are supported by our justice system and go without consequence. The fraternal order of police has a hidden agenda and it has been proven. They dismissed the charges against Professor Gates so that indicates that the police wrongly charged him. So what is the punishment for the arresting officer? Not a damn thing! And why the fu*k where they having a sit down with the president as if this was an important national issue. I couldnt imagine bush having a sit down at the white house over an arrest somewhere in boston.

Lil boy i do my job and i’m damn good at what i do.Go look up the definition of the different stages of Disorderly Conduct in the law book and yes Gates broke one those sector codes.That officer did his job he was dispatched to a burglary in progress and that’s how he treated it b/c he didn’t know Gates resided there.Gates the one is started with that bulls**t about b/c he was black. That officer followed the correct procedure.Call me what you want to it don’t affect me at all. I’m still gone get out there and do my job correctly. This doesn’t surprise me one bit. It’s just one example of the “in your face” behavior rednecks have been displaying since Obama got elected. Note all of the gun toters at these town hall events on healthcare. The issue has nothing to do with healthcare ; it’s just because the face of our government is now black. All I have to say is sometimes I watch Tru TV, Spike TV and the like and see how when white folks get pulled over by the police they cuss the white cop out talk about his mother scream in his face. What happens to them? Nothin. When we get pulled over and address the cop in the least bit disgruntle fashion whan happens to us? Ask Gates…
