This situation probably could’ve been handled much better. By working some officers, I hear quite a few mention how they treat and talk to people when they get on the scene. Some are very rude, arrogant and take their badge a little too seriously. However, there are some citizens who takes matters into their own hands and can be very uncooperative with police. None of us were there, so there’s really no way of knowing what really took place and how. There are always two sides to each story.

Was Gates disorderly? According to all reports, Yes. Should he have been arrested? Probably not. A disorderly conduct arrest is a collossal waste of time for everyone involved and is usually meant to send a message that certain behaviors won’t be tolerated. In other words toput someone in their place. I don’t have a problem w/any aspect of this incident except the fact that black people are praising this SGT. He is a supervisor. His job is to stop the officers under his command from doing what he did. People are always running off at the mouth, part of the job is to ignore that. Discretion is the better part of valor

First off im glad this happen to Henry louis Gates because he is a upity harvard professor who down the work of progressive people like Al sharpten and Louis Farrakan. Im sure Henry louis Gates felt he is above many blacks and that he shouldnt be subject to this kind of treatment because of his success, but now he has an eye opener. He can now better understands how unjust the justice system is. This is the same justice system that would say a prayer to god before they hung a black person. It has always been bias.
As far as Sgt. Crowley, he is wrong for what he did and still his actions are supported by our justice system and go without consequence. The fraternal order of police has a hidden agenda and it has been proven. They dismissed the charges against Professor Gates so that indicates that the police wrongly charged him. So what is the punishment for the arresting officer? Not a damn thing! And why the fu*k where they having a sit down with the president as if this was an important national issue. I couldnt imagine bush having a sit down at the white house over an arrest somewhere in boston.

Lil boy i do my job and i’m damn good at what i do.Go look up the definition of the different stages of Disorderly Conduct in the law book and yes Gates broke one those sector codes.That officer did his job he was dispatched to a burglary in progress and that’s how he treated it b/c he didn’t know Gates resided there.Gates the one is started with that bulls**t about b/c he was black. That officer followed the correct procedure.Call me what you want to it don’t affect me at all. I’m still gone get out there and do my job correctly. Mandingo…I agree ith some of the things you said but you seem to be taking the middle ground. Trying not to take a side. The fact of the matter is that both Gates and Crowley have the right to make comments that the other disagrees with but Crowley took it to another level when he used his position to unlawfully arrest Professor Gates. It’s an abuse of authority. For him to arrest him when he stepped outside of his private residence is just cowardly and unjust. In a world without racism or prejudice the day will come(hopefully) when an officer will ask us to step outside to talk and low and behold we’ll actually have a conversation. Because I’ve been in that scenario when a officer ask you to step outside of your home because he “wants to talk” and as soon as you step they slam you against the gate and arrest you. Even when your the one who called the police. This is where Crowley was the racist. RACISM-POWER, PREJUDICE AND MONEY. Up until that point they were both just being prideful and jockeying for position/power in a verbal manner. Crowley made it a physical thing and that is WRONG.

So let me get this straight… Crowley did the right thing, and even had police officers who are minorities stand behind him and hes still considered wrong in what he did. Yes all parties involved with this situation were in the wrong… Yes including Obama. Crowley was wrong in the fact that maybe the situation could have been handled more tactful and diplomatic.Walking away while giving your badge number is a big no-no in the police world. Gates is wrong in the fact that he out right used the race card and made a big scene when all he had to do was listen to the police officer. I grew up in a police household, not only was my father the only BLACK high ranking officer in the police department, but he was also one the first African-Americans who began what is now the AIRFORCE OFFICE OF SPECIAL INVESTIGATIONS. So i know what police procedure is. Even when Gates played the race card, he backed up the police officer in his account of the story. And then the president to get involved to say that the police acted stupidly, presented a biased opinion towards police that basically put blacks and whites on the fringe of a race war. The incident should have been handled in a better manner. having all 3 people at the white house for a beer did not squash the situation. Neither man, sees wrong in their ways. But we as african americans need to stop with the white and black… crackers and n-word comments. There are bad white people just as much as there are bad african americans. Im not going to say get over racism,because according to certain people on this site, that is the wrong way of thinking. And I agree with that train of thought. Whites who are racist or prejudice represent an irresponsible percentage of the White population who continue to hold America’s progress hostage. Celebrating this officer is only providing him with a false comfort zone that pretends that he is a hero and not a racist. Henry Louis Gates wealth and standing in society exposes the hate that Whites possess when Blacks are wealthy, educated and live in homes just as good or better then theirs. It exposes the assumption that a Black man can’t possibly live in a nice home like that. White America is still very mentally and emotionally childish and unbalanced.

Good example: I had a client last year who needed some help, he just happened to be a blk cop married to a white woman, he had a bad attitude and most likely did some questionable things in his life, karma came back to him, one of da guys he had put away, broke loose from prison, ran into da officer in San Francisco’s pier 39, shot him at point blank range, he survived it, now he is a paraplegic now! Sad, but da good news he is alive, anyways while at his home, he was rude wit me, but da wife was just da opposite! I left their home and never talked with them again. Be careful wut u say n do to people, u will never know how it will affect u lata…Same thing goes to da police precinct in Boston, celebrating treating da blk professor at Harvard like crap.
