From CNN.com:

A year after the election of America’s first African-American president, blacks in the United States are expressing optimism about racial progress not seen in a quarter-century, according to a new report by the Pew Research Center.

Thirty-nine percent of African-Americans said the “situation of black people in this country” is better than it was five years ago, nearly twice the 20 percent who said the same in 2007.

The optimism is not limited to the present, but covers the future as well.

A majority of African-Americans polled, 53 percent, said that life for blacks in the future will be better than it is now. Two years ago, the number was 44 percent.

The historic election of Barack Obama to the White House appears to have played a role in the positive sentiment.

Fifty-four percent of African-Americans said they think Obama’s barrier-breaking election has improved race relations in America. One-third of whites polled agreed, while 45 percent said his election has made no difference in race relations.

Personal finances have improved for blacks, according to the report. One-third of African-Americans polled rated their financial situation as excellent or good. In 2006, the number was 27 percent.

During the same time frame, economic fortunes for whites slumped, dropping from 52 percent then to 35 percent now.

Even with the upbeat findings, more than eight in 10 African-Americans said the country needs to make more changes before blacks have equal rights with whites. About one-third of whites agreed.

Yes, progress is being made. But it’s a long ways to go actually. Change doesn’t happen overnight. It happens over a period of time.

If only MORE AAs would get MORE opportunities and help in going to college and get good paying jobs so that there be less people (especially Black men) going to jail, less divorces, crimes. etc.. The foreigners are getting the opportunities to do this (can’t find a Black store owner or gas attendsant in my hood) and they’re wasn’t born here,so don’t believe this BS tatement… I don’t…

are they saying that because of obama? Or is this more liberal drivel from cnn? There are more black men in college now than in jail..which is impressive but as far as race relations it’s about the same..just not gettin hung.

[...] Blacks Progress Improving Under Obama!! Who do these people poll?? My progression has come about due to my own hard work and determination. Now granted I did vote for Obama, but my success is not due to his election nor would I think or do I think that his presidency predicts my future prosperity or success. Obama is working for all races in this country and he has made that quite clear, yet here we have a poll that speaks to blacks doing better under his administration. Now we will have blacks who only believe that they can strive to do better or will do better just because they have a black president. May the alarm bell please ring some sense into people who actually believe this poll!! He has done nothing specifically geared towards blacks as a whole that I have any knowledge about and I am sure he is going to stay politically correct and not do anything that will cause any race related controversy or should I say any additional negative controversy that he already has to endure. http://newsone.com/nation/poll-feeli…can-americans/ [...]
