Social and economic gaps between whites and blacks persist in the United States despite an atmosphere that led to the election of President Obama, an Urban League report said.

Blacks remain twice as likely to be unemployed, three times more likely to live in poverty and more than six times as likely to be imprisoned compared with whites, according to the group’s annual State of Black America report issued in March.

The report urges Obama to tackle the critical challenges of the times, including unemployment, home foreclosures, education and an overhaul of health care.

“As the Obama administration ushers in a new era of hope, change, and to some extent, unity for this nation, many are asking whether racial barriers have now been erased in America,” the report said. “Are discrimination, division and inequality antiquated relics of the past? For a quick answer to that question, one has but to review some of the sobering statistics.”

They urge Barack to do more? How about blacks doing more!!! What ever happened to marching and protesting against injustice. Our black leaders before us didn’t mean for the fight to stop with them, but it has. We have gotten some rights and feel that it’s enough, well guess what people we have no overcome. We have dropped the ball!! The ones before us got it started we haven’t done much in the way of keeping it going when it comes down to daily issues that effect black families in all different areas. We may get mad for the moment but when is enough really enough? When does it matter enough to start sticking together and standing up for what is right. I guess until the cruelest acts are commited upon your family or maybe you that you will feel that we all need to band together and march and protest. Protest everytime there is an injustice to say we will not stand for this BS but untill we do we doing just what they want us to do. Blacks will continue to be imprisoned for false crimes, we will continue to do hard time for crimes, when the ones locking us up is the head leader or knows who is. However, i can talk about their wrongs all day but what is still the most shocking to me is….We black people know what’s going on and we either to lazy or to stupid to do anything about it.

It is my honest belief that Obama isn’t going to do anything to either address or fix the problems in the Black community. Even if he revamps census records, healthcare, education and job creation Whites will benefit from it more due to the fact that Blacks tend to need more specialized needs tailored to their community, culture and lifestyle which the powers that be aren’t willing to accomodate. It’s not enough to say that we are lazy or incompetent as a group because we aren’t. We have our unique “issues” and many of us hoped that Obama would understand that. Even if he does understand that I don’t think there is much he can do because of a strong resistance that is influential upon his ability to make decisions. The only thing that he can do that may make a difference over time is appoint new judges and revamp the judicial system. Perhaps over time we can get them to interpret more laws in our favor. Other than that he isn’t king anything special for Blacks and I’d bet that we will have the same problems when it’s reelection time.

lh1123, I somewhat agree with your view but I think you are being a bit harsh on individuals. A lot of us are not empowered to make significant changes on our own. We need our community leaders and our local governments to step in and make significant changes. I live in Trenton NewJersey, 95% Black run government. They are compacent, lack of ingenuity, almost no interest in the city that they are elected to serve. Basically, they are self serving leeches! Trenton is the capital of NJ, yet, it is a TOTAL disgrace. So, I ask you , how can I, make a significant difference in my community with no support whatsoever from my Local governent? Not being controversial with you, Id really appreciate a new idea. Ours havent worked so far.Poverty, joblessness, drug dealers, slumlords, mental illness free to roam around unchecked, dirty parks and communities, broken utilities, you name it, we have it. All this with no voice in our own communities. Not just mine, all over Black America…
