From the Buffalo News:

Four years ago, Evita Broughton celebrated Kwanzaa for the first time with her family – lighting a candle each night and discussing the respective principle.

But she hasn’t celebrated the holiday since.

“It felt like a school project that lasted seven nights,” said Broughton, 27, of Marietta, Ga. “I didn’t feel like I had that connection. I tried to share my experiences with others but no one else was celebrating it.”

Kwanzaa, which runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1, may be a mainstream holiday with greeting cards, postage stamps and public celebrations, but experts say its popularity is receding.

It will not be getting a boost from the first family. The Obamas do not personally celebrate Kwanzaa, according to White House aides, though a written message from the president is likely, in keeping with the practice of his most recent predecessors, Presidents George W. Bush and Bill Clinton.

Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Maulana Ron Karenga, a professor at California State University, Long Beach, who is also executive director of the African American Cultural Center in Los Angeles.

The holiday was a way for African Americans to honor their culture, but it was also part of the black power movement of the era. The big boom in Kwanzaa came during its first two decades, according to Keith Mayes, author of “Kwanzaa: Black Power and the Making of the African-American Holiday Tradition.”

But he said participation has leveled off. Based on his research, he estimates a half-million to 2 million people in the U.S. celebrate Kwanzaa, out of about 40 million Americans identified by the U.S. Census as black, including those who are multiracial.

im sorry I just dont feel the connection with Kwanzaa.those principles should not be just celebrated during late dec to jan, it should be a everyday ritual for success in life. the lighting of the candles remind me of the jewish ritual. how can you tell us its ok to seperate yourself from Christmas because to you its the white man holiday and it dont relates to you, well thats your opinion and im a christan and i feel comfortable celebrating Christ life and death.Kwanzaa is the result of just one mans opinion and definition of Christmas.

How come people from Africa dont celebrate Kwanzaa? they think its idiotic.

Most of these holidays in my mind are bogus anyway, because their sole purpose appears to be sparking consumerism. Outside of the purists of the various religious observances, most of these “religious” holidays are used to get people to buy something, just like the non religious holidays. The problem with Kwanzaa is it appears to have started as a counter to Christmas and not a genuine observance.

Who are this so-called experts? If they are going to tell it tell it all! No popularity has slipped as much as the falsehood of Christmas and against all odds too. The media is bombarding us with all these so-call sales, when in essence things are marked-up 40% to 60%. In fact the people who can least afford to celebrate it. Are the very ones who participate in it the biggest. So think about it, it would not be in their interested for Kanzaa to blow up. they will tell you right after the first of the year how much the Christmas Spirit has fell off by the profit reports from the retailers. It all about the money, and since we do not produce or manufacture anything. They need us as consumers to boost their profits which they never invest any of it back into our communities. Economic slavery is just as bad if not worst than mental and physical slavery.

I’ve been celebrating Kwanzaa for most of my life and in my experience it’s the anti-consumerism holiday. It encourages creating gifts or buying things that edify you educationally, not purchasing electronic Also, the celebration of Kwanzaa and Christmas is not mutually exclusive. It’s a cultural, not religious holiday and as someone stated earlier, the principles should be celebrated and practiced daily, but Kwanzaa gives us a chance to celebrate and reflect up on how we apply them in our lives. You all should try it if you haven’t before bashing it based upon what you may have read or heard. If you feel the same then, cool, but it’s actually been a valuable part of my life as I’ve matriculated through undergrad and as I finish my graduate degree. Peace

Kwanza is a sad attempt by blacks to distance themselves from what they consider a “white” religion Christianity. It was created by some radical whitey hating assclown and most realize that now. Happy Birthday Jesus!!!
