From the Shreveport Times:

JACKSON, Miss. — Miss. Gov. Haley Barbour’s proposal to merge the state’s three historically black universities has sparked debate over the racial undertones it presents and raised further questions over the state’s historic underfunding of those colleges.

U.S. Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., lead plaintiff in a lawsuit that sought to rectify inequalities between Mississippi’s institutions based on race, said Barbour’s proposal goes against everything the state has been trying to accomplish since agreeing to the Ayers settlement.

The Ayers settlement was the result of a 1975 lawsuit that alleged Mississippi through its funding process discriminated against Alcorn State, Jackson State and Valley State.

According to the settlement reached in 2002, the Legislature is to provide $503 million to the historically black schools over 17 years.

“In the eyes of a lot of Americans it appears that the black colleges are being attacked once more,” he said.

some of these schools should be shut down. the students would be better of going to a juco for 2 yrs then transfer to nationally accredited school.

I actually think that they should merge, that being said the funding that is split between them all should all be poored into one cup and all the administrations need to sort out the new structure of positions they assume. And it should start with which school is the most productive

merging is at the interset of the school. so many hbcu have funding and money issues due to poor administrations

deshawn, I can understand money issues; however, the governor is also proposing to merge University of Mississippi, with Mississippi University for Women and Delta State. Those three schools cater to CAUCASIAN and Alcorn State University, Mississippi Valley and Jackson State University cater to AFRICAN-AMERICANS. Know the HISTORY behind a story before making comments, deshawn, Da J Rock and Jack Stephen.

The schools should not merge. The schools MAY need better administration; however, should not merge. What is YOUR MOTHER or YOUR FATHER or YOU worked at the schools and was laid off because of the merger.
