The measure takes pains, however, not to fuel the push for the US government to pay reparations to the descendants of African slaves.

“Nothing in this resolution (a) authorizes or supports any claim against the United States; or (b) serves as a settlement of any claim against the United States,” it says.

It is LONG overdue. Should have been done back in the late 1800′s. It is America’s first step to REAL reconciliation. This has come from a White American, not Black people demanding human rights. It means more. As for anyone that thinks Black people today are owed nothing for 240 plus years of free labor, is wrong!! How much of America’s wealth is built upon that free labor?? Think about that before you speak about us being owed nothing. White Americans who founded this country profited greatly from our ancestors blood, sweat and tears. Imagined a country where Black people were able to amass capital from the very beginning…free from slavery and segregation/discrimination. Look at the gains we made in spite of all the obstacles. We would be running corporations and governments all over America by now, not just a Black president. The world would be a VERY different place.

I think that restitutions and reparations for slavery should be every African-American be given a 20-year tax break from any income tax. That way all hard working African-American citizen will benefit from this and no one will be given a handout.

Well it was the opposite. The North had a good economy. Think about it this way as to why we might think that they think they’re superior to us. Picture this: You have to the muscle to move in on somebody’s property(ie Native americans and Latins we can argubly say), take over his house and claim it for your own for quite a long time. I’ve heard that we should get no reperations because slavery was “legal” at the time…what a joke!!! I also heard that the imprisonment of the Jewish people was “legal” as well as the improsnment of the Japanese people in America during the 2nd World War and not to forget the Native Americans during the occupation of their lands all of which included rape, murder and other inhumane acts that resulted in the theft of self respect, liveyhood and basic human rights of others. Ok, seriously though, the apology is just strange….really strange. Why now? Is it because we have a president of color? Is it a true realization that it [slavery] was wrong? Or is it because the economy is so extremely shi**ty that the powers that be want to do everything in their power to keep people “in line” on some level. Keep them pacified so to speak. Okay, I’ve read through these posts and these are my thoughts: The Africans that traded slaves to Spaniards and Europeans had NO idea those men, women and children were going to be treated in such a cruel and unusual way. Yes Africans had slaves, but they were truly indentured servants, working off debt and treated like family. So I’m really not feeling the blame being pushed back on the victim. Secondly, reparations will never come. IF it was ever offered you would have to prove a direct family link going back to Africa. The fact that you are black or you great grandparents were slaves will somehow not be satisfactory. Think about it… I am not impressed with the apology. There have been other “apologies” and after a while, “I’m sorry” loses it’s sincerity. Like if you hit me and you say, hey I’m sorry, I might forgive you. I will say an apology is a start however, many of us we always feel differently about this, because the ones who they need to say sorry to is not around to hear it. We have fought for many things as blacks and it takes us years to get them. Look at the pictures here prove it all. An apology is a start and the reality of the fact is that the black race has come a long way since slavery. Slavery was a terrible thing, but it produced some of the most prolific black people in history: Frederick Douglass, Harriet Tubman, Crispus Attucks, and Sojourner Truth. At this point we have to continue to move forward. Obama is in office and that shows that change has come.

I am pleased that the Senate passed the resolution unanimously. An apology for the African Holocaust – slavery in America – is in order and has been wayyyyy before apologies to any other ethnic group (minus Native Americans) or country. There is a stigma on the people who are descendants of African slaves in the form of racial discrimination, and the blanket stereotype across the world that we are inferior to remind us of our ancestry in America.

These are major issues we can possibly face everyday and, therefore, affects our day-to-day life in a negative way. Too many of our own people have this attitude and belief that we are inferior to any ethnic group, and therefore act accordingly; i.e., high illiteracy rate, poor communication skills, no social nor work etiquette, and the preference for non-blacks as mates, business partners, where they spend money, etc. It’s sad.

I have been to several parts of Africa and there are many people who live well even better than an average American. (we have done enough conferences and symposiums,etc.) proactively ,planned ,implemented,reassessed, fine-tuned and included our youths ideas then prepared!!, all on board after having reconciled our differences and priorities with some representative covenant ,incorporating kwanza principles, doctrines of the oic program ,transafrica, lessons from martin,malcolm, marcus, dubois,naacp,urban leaguether,tavis initiatives and other serious well thought out socio-economic,health care,financial/cultural educational( empowering support components)action plans. showing we love ourselves and reconnecting with our motherland AFRICAN roots (will require some major reprogramming,lol) and encouraging our youth to do also is the real reparations reward we provide for ourselves and CAN provide in tandem with us the village, filling in the gaps in our kids (and your neighbors kids!!)education! now those type of tutoring/enhancement workshops and conferences we do need! mostly about grass roots scrifices from 35-50 y/o bros and sis!!A can do focused energy on implementing FOR THE BENEFIT OF OUR YOUTH WHAT EVER SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE YOU CAN BRING TO THE TABLE FOR JUST 5-10 HOURS OF THE 168 hrs. I really don’t know whether to accept the apology or not. What’s done is done and you can’t take something like SLAVERY back or apologize for it. We are still going through a period of slavery.
