APTOPIX Haiti Earthquake

From the Washington Post:

PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI — International relief organizations backed by American soldiers delivered hundreds of tons of rice to homeless residents of the Haitian capital Sunday, laboring to ease a food shortage that has left countless thousands struggling to find enough to eat.

But even as food-aid workers enjoyed their most successful day since the Jan. 12 earthquake, the increasingly prominent role of U.S. troops and civilians in the capital is creating high expectations that the Obama administration is struggling to contain.

The needs are extraordinary, and the common refrain is that the Americans will provide.

“I want the Americans to take over the country. The Haitian government can’t do anything for us,” said Jean-Louis Geffrard, a laborer who lives under a tarp in the crowded square. “When we tell the government we’re hungry, the government says, ‘We’re hungry, too.’ ”

Added Canga Matthieu, a medical student whose school was destroyed: “The American government should take care of us.”

“They’re well organized. The United States is the richest country in the world, and they can help.”

But help has its limits, U.S. officials emphasize in their public statements and in their interactions with Haitians. “You will have a friend and partner in the United States of America today and going forward,” President Obama said the day after the earthquake. But U.S. officials here make it clear that the American government is not responsible for rebuilding the ravaged country.

I know it’s a hard time to my Haitian brothers and sisters, and I know your country is poor, but it’s YOURS. I am proud to be a US citizen and I am pro-Obama,but do NOT let the US get it’s hooks into your country. Yeah, you may get more aid for the time being but…like I said it’s YOUR country.

Oh hell no…Haiti needs not be fooled by the US….We do NOT need to take care of them in any form or fashion…They need to do whats neccessary with the help they have received and will receive to get their own shyt together..They need to be taught how to cook as opposed to just being handed a meal…

Since the US has a reputation of helping other countries, I think it’s a good idea to help Haiti w/ everything they need for now considering the quake.

The U.S always wants to help others but can’t seem to help those in need in their own country. I thought the senate and white house was complaining about the deficit and how there is no money. So tell me where the f.uck they got all this money to send to other countries? We have diasters here apparently with no jobs and increasing rent and other things so why can’t we get some assistance for those on the streets holding cardboard signs? My God what such hypocrites. No money my a.ss…seems as if the government can pop all kinds of shyt out they a.ss when they want to!

as a haitian my remark is hell to the no! we may be poor but we are free. we may not have much but we have something that will never be taken away from us: our pride, culture, and our history. Dessaline and Toussint and the slaves did not fight the french, british, and spaniards so our country can be taken over again. i rather live as a poor free man than a rich enslaved soul. No thank u.

The best thing for Haiti and the US is for Haiti to recover and for the US to leave. Strugle is part of existing.

For all of you self hating Americans out there its a wonder YOU as a citizen and the US as a country is viewed upon so negatively in the world.

I do agree it is not in the best interest of the world for the US to govern Haiti, but my God why do you all jump so negatively at the sound of your own country.

This would be the first mistake that country makes. You do not want a country like the US to be in control. There will be no blacks left to make a choice for you. You people need to get your head out of your ass and start thinking and doing for yourselfs. The US/New World order is coming and you need to be prepare! Get real if you want the US to stay in your country. Don’t worry, the most high will take care of you. I promise he will do if you believe in him.

Hahahaha! This is funny. Maybe a small minority of Haitians would luv the U.S. to take control of governing or to turn Haiti into a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Virgin Islands BUT, I am a Haitian-American (U.S. Army vet) who has strong ties to the island and I can tell u that the majority of Haitians only want help for the long-term and help rebuilding and a more active partnership and nothing else. HAITI IS THE FIRST INDEPENDENT BLACK COUNTRY IN THE WORLD and we are proud of our heritage. My Haitian descendants fought that murderous, cowardice christopher columbus’s people and the other white europeans. We defeated Napoleans great Army to gain our independence. Haitians luv the U.S. and the American people and appreciate all the help BUT there’s no way in the world we will be occupied by any foreign country. We will struggle and live free rather then be occupied and live great. Freedom is what all men strive for. Us Haitians are proud of being Independent.

To my Haitian brothers (for the record I’m not Haitian, but where ever Black people dwell, I see family) do some background research. You are free in name only. You may not be directly under foreign rule, but your country is being controlled by multi National corporations who play the tune that the “elected” officials dance to. This is nothing new or unique. This is going on throughout the Caribbean, Central and South America and of course Africa has been subject to this for a very long time. Unfortunately, the US will have an imperialistic presence in your homeland for a very long time in the future. The only truly free country in the Caribbean these days is Cuba, and my brothers there pay a brutal price for it by way of sanctions, but I applaud Fidel for maintaining the Revolution.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

Also let me add, I doubt this is a wide spread sentiment. I think this is meant to convince “Americans” this is what the Haitian people want, so its easier for the US to justify their presence there!

What you are saying is somewhat true, the U.S. has been meddling in our affairs for decades, in fact, the U.S. has been meddling in everybody’s business, the cooperations did have their hands in the government for awhile, Regardless, if the U.S. thinks they will just come into Haiti and just try to set up shop and build long-term bases, etc. they got another thing coming to them. They need to study history, we will NEVER bow down to foreign rule. AYITIEN YO AP TUN…LIVE FREE OR DIE!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/_A_/ _A_

@ImTheTruth45. Think about this. Typically, the US will only occupy a country for a few reasons. Its either replete with oil, if it serves a military need strategically or if they wish to take over the natural resources. With oil or natural resources, its not an obvious military presence, but rather a corporate one. Like I mentioned before, corps will go in and undermine the local crop, drive the farmers off the land, set up their business, and have a huge pool of unskilled labor who, due to a lack of jobs, will work for almost anything, guaranteeing big profits. Now these companies come in as saviors. Promising jobs, opportunities for a better quality of life etc. So much so, that the locals are welcoming them in. Planned obsolescence. The UN “peacekeepers” are there under the same guise as there to help the people but are really only there to protect theses businesses. My brother, its not about socialism, communism, marxism etc. anymore. The new program is Corporatism! Its done so slick, that you can’t see it coming until its too late. Even before the US got there, do you know who got there first with aid? China. If you look at China and what they are doing all over the world, they are in building up these countries. Out of the goodness of their heart? I think you already know about that. Check out the Lekki Free Trade Zone, and this will illustrate my point a little better. Be sure and read the “Preferential policies and incentives to investors” and you will see how these countries pretty much “surrender” to these investors. New Millennium warfare has taken on a new look.

Also, there is now a proliferation of “security” companies out of the US these days. Were all familiar with Blackwater, now known as Xe (pronounced Z), but trust, there are hundreds popping up, and since this tragedy in Haiti, many more. They are all or mostly owned by former CIA, FBI, DEA etc. and almost always hire former military and law enforcement. These are nothing more than extensions of the military. The US knows that putting 30k troops somewhere now, will raise eyebrows real quick, so they circ**vent suspicion by hiring these security contractors to essentially carry out the same duties. When the military comes in, we know what their aim is, but when a “security company” comes in, its not viewed the same. Again, the people welcome them with open arms because they think they are there to help, and are unaware of their true intent. Brother, I really wish you were right about the revolutionary spirit, but I have no faith. Back then, it was obvious who was to blame for the suffering, therefore the enemy was clear. Things aren’t that obvious anymore. That’s not meant to be disparaging to the Haitian people, because again, this goes on EVERYWHERE!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/paynekali/ paynekali

One of the reasons the U.S. (Bush family & friends) would want to “RULE” Haiti, is to get their/its’ hands on the “OIL” that is now visible after the earthquake that the powers that be has created…see HAARP! The same thing happen with Katrina. Why else would Bush Jr. come out of retirement to go to Haiti a country & people that he hate simply because Haiti fought to stay “free” they did not let anyone in to occupy (take over) their country. The French (U.N) are still angry that the Haitians beat them down so that they could remain a free country. Remember the only reason any political figure want to assist Haiti is because Haiti has a wealth of resources, in paticularly OIL.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/ImTheTruth45/ ImTheTruth45

    @ _A_

Yea I understand the point you are making about the military contractors like Blackwater. Spent 8 Years U.S. Army (from 01 to 09), just recently got out actually. I know how they use the contractors to do their will (i.e the Horn of Africa, Afganistan, Iraq, the Philippines, etc.), and yea my people will accept the U.S. as well as the rest of the international community and we look forward to the future efforts to help us rebuild BUT u might be able to pay the government and pull strings but just look at the voice of the people cannot be silenced. The Haitians are a peaceful people and are a needy people especially post-earthquake but ive been to Haiti plenty of times, trust, the Haitian people wont lay on their backs and let foreigners take over. Occupiers threaten to embolden rebels groups like Fanmi Lavalas, FRAPH, and the guerillas in the Northeast. The U.S. and international community definitely doesnt want another hornets nest especially in this side of the world. Regardless, I pray hard for a better tomorrow for Haiti, for the Caribbean, for the world, for us all.

This is some bull$hit, they really don’t know that the US is responsible for the earthquake, and now that they have found oil and natural gas there, they will stay there until they rape the land of all its natural resources and just like Africa and its diamond situation, my people in Haiti will not see any revenues from the land their fathers conquered. And that don’t even sound like a real person from Haiti talking anyway, that to me sounds like some more propaganda reported by the news media to influence public opinion, just like with the soldiers in these wars, Joe Lieberman and John McCain went over the fight zone and the soldiers told them “NO” on more soldiers and when those two a$$holes went in the media and said the soldiers said “YES” to more soldiers.

With the US being there, it’s only going to make things worse. Then they have all these middlemen collecting money on the behalf of Haiti with these benefit concerts, they are collecting the money and the bad thing about it is that, you can’t tell if the money is getting to Haiti or not and they are trusting the money to people I wouldn’t even trust with 10 dollars, like Bush and Clinton.

Ok I feel as though we should not take over anyones country, because we have major issues of our own to address, and to really take care of. I do think that the prime minister needs to get the help that he needs, take notes, look at the rebuilding process, start to make moves. I believe that is what leadership is. He has to take ownership of this earthquake and become the leader that he was elected to be. However I think that it is excellent that the americans are countributing in the way they are. Just think we all need to come together all over the wolrd to make this a better place. Think, would you want your mother or any of your siblings starving to death. Its the thought that counts, about how people are reaching out to help one another.

MR. 225 I soooo Agree. And there is nothing Ignorant that he said… This is another Ego trip/fight for the US WTH do you not get we are in the slums right now now jobs we have homeless we have children without insurance we have crime. Really now. And FYI there are other countries in Hati helping not just the US. I didnt even see this much out pour when it was in our own back yard. So why all the defense? Why is the US always trying to dominate? Give the money yeah ok then get back to your own home! which come one people all that money that was raised dont you think we can do that here and give to those who need also?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/GiGi_Ambition/ GiGi_Ambition

ANd Don please tell me why should WE be responsible for the rebuilding of their country? You know since we can’t do that for ourselves and all. And why do we need an allegance? Are we superior? I mean if this is for a future deal or battle if they take a good look at the history of USA then I think they may just say thank you for the help but…. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO TRY AND GOVERN US NOR MAKE US FOLLOW YOUR WAYS I mean since the Americans did come here insearch of freedom from just those actions. I mean I dont know I maybe wrong. Oh and please tell me what it is we are to be learning from this?

  • http://www.facebook.com/Haitian.Pride1804 Haiti Pride

MOST Haitians, I would say about 99% DO NOT want the U.S. to take over the Haitian government. We love our independence and shed too much blood for it. Defeated the French, Polish, and Spiniards and liberated ourselves and helped liberate the Dominicans. We will NEVER surrender our independence. We would rather the U.S. and the rest of the west leave us be. If you want to help great, if not that’s fine. We have been here for centuries, we have fought in the U.S. Revolutionary War and have helped during the World Wars. We want nothing to do with the west.
