U.S. Lifts 22-Year Ban Of HIV/AIDS Carrying Immigrants

The US has lifted a 22-year immigration ban which has stopped anyone with HIV/Aids from entering the country.

President Obama said the ban was not compatible with US plans to be a leader in the fight against the disease.

The new rules come into force on Monday and the US plans to host a bi-annual global HIV/Aids summit for the first time in 2012.

The ban was imposed at the height of a global panic about the disease at the end of the 1980s.

It put the US in a group of just 12 countries, also including Libya and Saudi Arabia, that excluded anyone suffering from HIV/Aids.

The BBC’s Charles Scanlon, in Miami, says that improving treatments and evolving public perceptions have helped to bring about the change.

Rachel Tiven, head of the campaign group Immigration Equality, told the BBC that the step was long overdue.

“The 2012 World Aids Conference, due to be held in the United States, was in jeopardy as a result of the restrictions. It’s now likely to go ahead as planned,” she said.

In October, President Obama said the entry ban had been “rooted in fear rather than fact”.

    ok so Obama is now allowing in people with diseases, im starting to believe that he wants to destroy this country, how the hell are we going to provide for undoc**ented citizens medical bills and now new immigrants with diseases bills? do he really think he can keep taxing people over and over to pay for every one problems.WHERE ARE WE GETTING THE MONEY FOR THIS?DOES HE EVEN NOTCE THE ECONOMY AND JOB SITUATION?

    WTF!! NO let me type that out..WHAT THE FUKK! He’s going to let more people in with the disease and we cant even afford to treat the MILLIONS that are already here! And its already been said that the FIVE DIFFERENT strains are becoming untreatable as it is. Good gawd what is this man thinking?!

    cali its a sad fact but there will be people living next to us all that are new immigrants with problems we wont even know about. the hospitals and clinics you go to will be over run with undoc**ented people and newly doc**ented immigrants with serious issues and no money,those hospital fees are going up.I didnt want to believe the republicans but Obama is the most left president ever. how are you worrying about immigrants over your citizens needs now

    Deshawn121, Im with you. I just HOPE Obama has a really GOOD reason for lifting said ban…I hope its not just on some hold hands, “We Shall Overcome” type s**t. His putting US in further danger of this disease better not be due to his goal of better nation relations. I dont think anyone can point out the good his actions on this are doing…SMH@ all the people who voted this kat in!!
