This week on Washington Watch, Roland speaks with U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, about the state of urban education, specifically in New Orleans.

What he has to say is SHOCKING:

Arne Duncan On New Orleans’ progress in education since Katrina:

“This is a tough thing to say, but let me be really honest. I think the best thing that happened to the education system in New Orleans was Hurricane Katrina. That e- — education system was a disaster, and it took hurricane Katrina to wake up the community to say that “we have to do better.” And the progress that they’ve made in four years since the hurricane is unbelievable. They have a chance to create a phenomenal school district. Long way to go, but that – that city was not serious about its education. Those children were being desperately underserved prior, and the amount of progress and the amount of reform we’ve seen in a short amount of time has been absolutely amazing.”

Text continues after gallery…

On New Orleans’ educators:

“I have so much respect for the adults, the teachers, the principals that are working hard. I spent a lot of time talking to students at John – John Mack High School there, many of whom had missed school for six months, eight months, 13 months after the hurricane and still came back to get an education. Children in our country, they want to learn. They’re resilient. They’re tough. We have to meet them halfway. We have to give them an opportunity, and New Orleans is doing a phenomenal job of getting that system to an entirely different level.”

    Another example that one should “put brain in gear before putting mouth in motion”. But before feeling all p’d off, take a moment to think a little about a possible deeper meaning. I think about the opportunities for improvement that are possible with a new beginning. Listen to “Tobacco Road” sung by Lou Rawls.

    “…it took hurricane Katrina to wake up the community to say that “we have to do better.”” There r several ways of looking at what the man said and all have some validity to them, but perhaps he said it with the intention of meaning something like this. “Before I hit rock bottom I didn’t care about s**t. I drank and smoked and f**ked around not giving a s**t about anyone or anything, including myself. But after my heart attack I realized how bad a shape i was in and suddenly a light went off in my head and I realized that I can change all this.” Suppose this man was thinking like that. Suppose he said that about his brother who, four yrs after hitting rock bottom from his heart attack was not totally healthy yet but had made great improvements in his life. And suppose he said of his brother that the heart attack was a blessing in disguise. If he had said that, everyone would be nodding their head in agreement and praising their stupid god for that heart attack. But this man said it about Louisiana instead of his brother and a hurricane instead of a heart attack and suddenly he’s evil eh? Perspective can be a beautiful thing, as can having all the facts before killing a man. :)

    cmon people. how many of you have been sitting around wondering “hmmmm how is the educational system in new orleans post katrina!?”

    these race hustlers throw these “issues” out there and try and guilt trip you into caring about issues that really aren’t that important in order to collect a pay check and/or keep their faces out in there.

    what’s important is getting the black family back together by stop having so many children out of wedlock, HIV/AIDS, violence, crack, and our self destructive entertainment industry. is Roland gonna ever speak on these things? don’t hold your breath.

    New Orleans is a city that needs Military control. I tried living in there but had to get the hell out of there. Blameing the politicians is useless because all politician are crooks. MOST OF THE PEOPLE IN THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS OR GOOD FOR NOTHING. The police do what they want becaue they gave up on the people long time ago. The young gang bangin criminal underground has takin over this city a long time ago. Those criminals evacuated to other areas and soon realize they were no longer in New Orleans any more because other places would’nt put up with their s**t so they all fled back to the N.O. Bring the ARMY jeeps with 50 calibur machine guns mounted and patrol magnolia and calieo. When you catch these clowns throw them away for good and get rid of that dumb as 60 day rule. The hard working people never returned to new orleans only the criminal return because they get away with that black bull s**t anywhere else.

    Johnny_BHM. Black bulls**t, no sounds more like white bulls**t, another kkkracher logged onto a black website posting nonsense. Did you stay in the N.O., I don’t know but if you did was it that bad or were you that b***h. Look I’ve never been there so I don’t know, but your dialect and way of talking about it is f**ked up and if its so bad you think it needs the military then don’t move yo fat ass back!!!!

    I’am a proud graduate of Jackson State University and 100% black man, not a thug or gangsta. We as black folk don’t like to hear the truth about ourselves and that OK. The one great thing that most great leaders was able to do was telling the people the truth even when they did’nt want to hear it. Unknown108 you must be one of those nig*as destroying the black communities across this nation. I bet you’re apart of the NO SNITCHIN MOVEMENT that allow crimminal take over our streets. I LOVE BLACK PEOPLE BUT I HATE THOSE DAMN NIG*AS. Cris Rock said they need a KKK for the black people. LOL

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MR_NANASTROKER/ MR_NANASTROKER

    U need’nt worry bout criminals takin over the streets
    it’s the Criminals you see but Don’t view them as criminals becasue the Media has hog-washed your mentality @ JohnnyBMH

    OPEN YOUR EYES and use the 3rd one also @ Johnny_BHM
    and I must add that the lunacy that this Nation has benefitted our past generations with I doubt that we can proclaim US as racist people
    BTW we have a KK 4 “black people”….you vote 4 them

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Splash_Waters253/ Splash_Waters253

    It don’t matter how much negativity those craKKKas give off regarding BLACK people because there will always be quite a few Willie Lynch horse trained coons that agree with this nonsense. As if by going along with these hick a.ss pilgrims will make you an exception and give u benefits, or have them look at you differently when all in all they won’t. Be at the wrong place at the wrong time and your black a.ss will see a night stick just as fast as rodney king did and even the young black violinist. Negros are hardheaded and are quick to come at US black people saying we are using the race card. It’s such a damn shame when its blatantly in your face or on the news, or written in an article as such. There will always be those idiots that agree and make excuses for the things they do. Let alone continue mutt breeding with the enemy. Now with tragedies like Katrina and whats going in Haiti, they are suppose to be good things for black people? GTFOH with that shyt! More power to you sold out coons! Johnny_bhm stfu!

    IM BLACK AND AGREE kATRINA WAS A GOOD THING FOR N.O. , MANY OF THE PEOPLE THAT WAS DESTROYING THE COMMUNITY LEFT. THE WARDS WITH THE WORSE CRIME WILL NOT BE REBUILT AND THATS A GOOD THING, MOST OF THE PEOPLE HAVE MOVED ON TO OTHER STATES AND DONT WANT TO GO BACK. IN THE FUTURE THOSE WARDS WIL BE FULL OF PEOPLE WHO WORK AND WANT A BETTER LIFE NO MATTER THE COLOR. NOW WE NEED A SITUATION LIKE THAT IN THE SOUTH SIDE OF CHICAGO, PARTS OF PHILI, KANSAS AND DEFINITLY DETROIT AND L.A.

    WHERE EVER THERE IS BLACK PEOPLE THAT HAS FULL CONTROL OVER A COMMUNITY SOME HOW CURRUPTION STARTS BREWING, SORT OF LIKE HAITI

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_BHM/ Johnny_BHM

    Splash-Waters253 it sounds like you are apart of the black community problem. Its sisters like you that don’t put high standards on the black men in your life. I know i’am a black man and I fight on both sides of this war. Being a successful black man i have to fight the white folks and their bullsh*t and this black bullsh*t. While in New Orleans I Had 2 cars stolen and home broken into and do you know who commited these crimes? It damn sho was’nt some white folks. Get you and your african-american sisters to start demanding those thugs you’ll harboring to pull up their damn pants, get a haircut, stop putting all that sinful ink on that beautiful black skin, raise his babies , stay out the streets and get a job. DAMN! DONT THE TRUTH HURT BLACK PEOPLE?

    Lemme get this straight… the man says the educational system is making progress (lord knows it probably couldn’t get worse) and some of you spin that into a vastly bigger thing than what was quoted. It took a horrific disaster for a lot of folk to wake up. Wow, what a concept. I applaud the man for speaking the truth.

    @deshawn121

    Your statement is false. The people that were destroying that community have gone back. Crime is worse than ever. Those of us that returned home to New Orleans after college to try to make a difference have not returned since Katrina. Too much red tape and too much bs. I would love to be home right now but I don’t have that kind of energy anymore. My little sister is still young, she went back. She’s making a difference. I’m proud of her but I worry 24-7 for her well being. The criminals have all returned.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NewOrleansSplendor/ NewOrleansSplendor

    @Deshawn121

    Also, the lower 9th ward was full of homeowners despite what the news said. Those people had been in those homes for generations. While it was a high crime area don’t assume that there were no hard working people living there. Most of the crime was because the 3rd and 4th generations wanted to be ganstas.

    @ 865blackprince, education and higher education are the key to preventing teen pregnancy, STD’s, drug use etc etc etc… These are facts when people are better educated they’re better informed and usually have the confidence to not give in to peer pressure. Usually…. I’m not from N.O. and don’t particularly understand the neccessity of such a statement from the secretary of Edu. I do think it could have been left at the situation is better than ever let’s be positive!
