I commend DL for being man enough to shed some tears knowing the criticism he will get from men especially black men. I also commend the teacher for stepping up and showing some optimism and hope for DL.

What I dont understand is why cant our Black Men and Black women step up and support our youth in what they do and what they want to accomplish in life despite of pitfalls and negative influences in our environment. I think it is disheartening to hear that DL and I and others have family members who doesnt believe in us and want to see us fail more than anything in the world.And we wonder why our community is becoming the nightmare our ancestors were afraid of.

This is a nice lesson here on how the development of the self esteem is absolutely paramount when we talk about teaching children properly and effectively…Fortunately for DL, all it really took was one teacher with some kind words, but for way too many others, it takes a lot more..Mothers, Turn off the TV and Video games and spend “QUALITY” time with your children..Quality time does not mean taking them to McDonalds, quality time is when they are actually learning something that will help them later in life…ALSO, research these foods that our children are eating daily..Some of these foods that you may consider “treats” are actually poisoning your child…don’t take my word, do the research…High Fructose Corn Syrup, partially hydrogenated oils, Trans fats etc…

This is complete bulls**t!! I went to Avalon Gardens with DL/ as he’s called and he wasn’t into s**t in the 5th grade. He was a Jehovah’s Witness delivering watch tower pamplets on Saturdays.When that show aired I had 5-7 homeboys calling me saying WTF!! DL has gone too far this time and it’s time someone said something. We didn’t grow up in Compton and he wasn’t in any gang. He had good parents as most of us did. Our neighborhood had the largest all black scouting program west of the Mississippi!! With all the parents particpating!!!!Troop 639 had great black leaders including a gentalman named Harper Center and a forth grade teacher named Mr. White, who by the way didn’t have children our age and were very involved in the community. DL/ Darryl coundn’t be involved because of his religion. DL/ Darryl came from a good home with good parents. I’m tired of him talking like we grew up in some eastside bario. We had good schools and good teachers(like Mr. Boston) who I’m sure didn’t remember DL/ Darryl because he wasn’t a problem child as he claims and I am sure that DL/ Darryl had to prep this man for hours to get him to ready for the show. There were plenty of good strong black teachers that he could have talked about on the show.
I am tired of him thrashing our community, his parents still live here, if the community was so bad why didn’t he move them away. This community is still well cared for and looks good. As the older people die or go into nursing homes, a lot of the children are moving back. The only black toxic group, Community Coalition For Change, exist in the community. This group is the watch dog for businesses that cause toxics in the community that has been causing cancer and other dieases to people. This is the only group that has closed a toxic waste station down in America. From this group’s work there is $15,000 given in scholarships every year to students from Gardena and Centinel high schools.
He was a ‘wanna be’ gang member. In the 10th grade he started to ditch classes tried to be a gang member. He never fulfilled that roll because it wasn’t in him and his parents kept a close watch on him. I know, because I went to school with him from kindergarten through high school. I don’t even remember seeing him drinking a beer. I have total respect for what he and his what has to be one of the greatest managers have accomplished, but you don’t have to pretend you came from something you didn’t. His parents I’m sure were greatly disappointed that they weren’t his choice as his greatest influence. Darryl please be real to yourself and to your hood. My wife managed a club called the Golden Tail (in El segundo,CA.) in the late 80′s and at last call she would let you tell jokes. We watch you grow into a great comic. You worked hard at your craft!
