i can definitely understand why many people are reacting the way they are by a non-black winning at a HBCU, especially if it were a white girl. However, it would be wrong for me to make someone feel like their wrong ,as much as i would want to, when they’re not because of something like that. If you were black and were attending a predominately white or Hawaiian school and won in a pageant, would that be wrong? If they are able to attend the school, if they were able to enter the pageant, and if that makes it a possibility to win, then i don’t think that it should’ve even been that big of a surprise. ok, let’s clear the air and talk about the facts…First, I am a student at Hampton University and the real issue here is not her race. First she is not an official student, she goes to a satellite school about 30mins away and the students here didn’t even vote for her and we don’t know her. Our main concern is: how is she going to represent us and she can’t even give a tour of our school or even sing our Alma Mater? No, we weren’t receptive of her when she won, which prompted her to pull the race card and eventually write Obama. I see in the letter that they call her little Obama, she is never on campus for us to even address her as such! So therefore, the position of being Miss Hampton University is to be the premier ambassador for Hampton University, there is no way that she can fulfill this when she never on campus.

I attended Morgan state univ – back in the day—- dont think it would have went well with us LOL….

And she thinks Obama should waste his time on this nonsense because she’s feeling a little of reality that black women/men have felt throughout their lives being treated indifferent when they have made an honest achievement.

My best friends goes to Hampton,They found out who won at my house and their reaction was “Who the f**k is she!” and they told me that the reason ppl are upset is not due to the fact that she won and she isnt black, ppl are mad because she DOESNT GO TO THE SCHOOL!! she takes courses at a off campus location and no one knows who she is, or have seen her participate in any school functions, or fundraisers like all the other contestants have. None of the student body knew or saw her until the day of the pageant!!! Of course there are some ignorant ppl on that campus, But you wouldnt want someone representing you if you didnt know who the hell they were or what they stand for. The huge uproar that it caused at the school came from those she is suppose to represent. If by representing them is saying “That my crowning was not widely accepted and many negative comments regarding my win have been shared throughout my campus.The true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African-American.” If thats how you are suppose to represent a Black University, by calling the majority of the school population rasict then u shouldnt be Miss Hampton.

Maaaan…I aint tryna argue about black white and bout whether or not this girl regularly attends the school or not. All i know is…

1. She was in the contest…so clearly she was eligible.

and

2. My girl looks RRRRRRRRRRRRREADY….and in the end pageants have never been about a whole lot more than looks anyway…and if I were to rank them by who I’d approach first based on looks….she’d be in the top 2.

I’m not sure about the facts of this case. From what I hear, most people aren’t complaining about her race, as much as they are complaining about her not attending the school. As I don’t know her status as a student, I can only assume that if she wasn’t eligible to compete they would not have allowed her to compete in the first place.

So I suggest folks calm down and give her the respect that she’s due as the winner of the pageant.

All I’m seeing is he said she said about her status at the school but even if she does attend an off campus location is she not still a student? So what about those students who go to UNC but don’t go to the Chapel Hill main campus? Does it mean that one of them would deserve to be Miss UNC any less? Same for any other school with multiple campuses. She may have some extenuating circ**stances that prevent her from attending the main campus.

If this is truly an argument, as the sis is stating in the letter she wrote to the President, it is a very weak one and has actually placed a very ugly disposition on her title already. Instead of her entertaining the race card after being so newly elected, why doesn’t she just and simply focus on some more positive issues right now. It is interesting that this is being played so hard on the race card in today’s society of ” equality for all”. The issue I see more here is that she is actually entertaining the weak minded as if they are children.

HBCU are a symbol of black pride and struugle. Hundreds of years ago WE were forbidden to learn anything prgressive let alone go to school. After reading most of these comments I find it ironic that not one that I’ve read addressed the real problem here. First of all, the school should have had clearly defined rules as to who is eligible to run for this position. Personally, considering the fact that she didn’t physically attend the University I don’t think she should have been eligible to run. Secondly, what does it say about the rest of the Black student population in this school? The fact that one off campus, non Black was even considered speaks volumes about the overall mentality of the University and it’s ability to prepare students of any color to compete in the real world. Thirdly, this student clearly isn’t ready for such a responsibility if her first thoughts are to reach out to the President for help in dealing with the opposition to her race. The bottomline is that we need to stop blaming and punishing the girl because it isn’t her fault for winning. It’s the Universities fault and the rest of the Black student body’s for making it possible.

I am honored to be the winner of the Miss Hampton University Pageant that was held on Friday, October 9, 2009. On Sunday, October 11, 2009 I posted a letter to President Obama saying that my win was not widely accepted on campus. I have now come to regret writing this letter and disappointing the very students that I now represent. I took the comments of a few and blew it out of proportion. In reality, all comments that have been directed towards me and the reception I received at the Hampton University versus Howard University football game on Saturday, October 10, 2009 were genuinely supportive. Today, I met with student leaders and other elected student officials and they were also supportive. Hampton University has always promoted diversity. In fact Hampton University pioneered American Indian education and has embraced diversity since its inception. I truly apologize to all students, faculty, staff and alumni. It was absolutely not my intention to bring negative attention to the University. I deeply apologize for any misunderstandings that this may have caused and I look forward to working with my fellow students to promote the Hampton University legacy.

We as black people need to quit b***hin. We can’t have it both ways. Get over it! I went to a HBCU and it is what it is. If white people were complaining were protesting that a black woman won at a predominatly white campus, we would be crying foul play. The judges were from that school and she won! She has a right to her crown. This a the part of my race that disturbs me. We want to cry racism when it happens to us. We turn around and do the exact same thing! Stop the madness!

If that is the case, all HBCU’s schools should only let black people go to their schools. We want to be equal only when it is convenient for us. Our schools are great schools. Everyone that is not of our skin tone has the same views as racist people. You can not blame her for winning. Like I said, we can not discriminate against others because of their skin tone.

if she is a student of Hampton, satellite campus or not, then she is eligible to run. I have to say though, out of the crop of girls up there, she is the best looking by far. surely they have better looking black women at hampton than those four.

From reading the comments it appears many folks seem to not have ingested one crucial point, that being that the young lady in question IS a student except at the SMALLER campus rather than the LARGER campus. You know, how like UC is a school with various campuses(UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Berkely, UC Santa Barbara)?

Again, this young lady IS a student. She attends the SMALLER campus. She is ELIGIBLE to enter the competition let alone win it.

It never ceases to amaze me how intolerant folks are. So what if it’s a HBCU? So what if a non-African American STUDENT won? If an African-American woman won a pageant at a traditionally ‘white school’ is that wrong? NO. However, we evidently have many people within the population who are one-sided. “It’s not okay for US to be discriminated against but I can hate or condemn you all day every day”.

I’m glad that she won, we need to understand that this is a 2 way street. If a individual attend a university of their choice and decide to work run for office/beauty queen and the students body choose that individual then the rest should keep their mouth shut

I am also Glad that she won! Its another sign of barriers being broken. It doesn’t matter if she was on the main campus or a “Purple skinned” Online student. If she was enrolled at the institution and eligible to run, she had every right to. She was accepted at the College because she had the grades to get in. It’s not about color it’s about grace & poise. I’m sure the other young ladies had it but maybe she had more. If any of you posters were interested in the opinions if students that actually attend the school (instead of talking out your behinds)…you’d learn something new. Stop playing “captain save-a-Ho” and pay attention to the REAL criticism, the students didn’t want her cry baby ass to win because she has shown little interest in student affairs. 1) I think it’s hilarious they chose another student who isn’t Black to speak on the situation. The issue is not that this girl is not Black but that she doesn’t even attend the main campus but instead attends school in Virginia Beach at a satellite campus. There are so many rituals at HU that this particular woman has not been a part of and probably knows nothing of. How can you represent a University you have not fully been a part of? She hasn’t eaten in the cafeterias, hasn’t joined any of the organizations on campus, didn’t live in one of our freshman dorms, nothing. She CAN’T represent HU because she doesn’t even know what life is like at HU. How much will we give? It’s already enough that we have NO african-american females in lead roles on television. Jada Pinkett-Smith is a nurse, when others are doctors of the shows named after them. Multiculturalism is a way of the United States. Everyone is here. I would not expect a traditional all black school the select all black winners when there are other well qualified candidates. Tradition can survive-even with change. Write the President of the USA, why not? He’s the best. She should have asked from some support from the school before writing. Not only am I from the South but I am a alumnus of one of the H.B.C’s here. I find it rather disturbing that there is so much of an uproar about something as meager as this. I’m not mad at the young lady, she decided to give her tuition money to a black college (something that a lot of whites won’t do). If the college didn’t want her to win then she should not have been allow to compete. It’s comments like Tonya’s that reflect the underlying reverse racism that keeps a lot of black people from experiencing what this vast world has to offer. As a matter of fact, during my matriculation I witnessed goldigging females who were emulating European women and wearing gaudy label laden European apparel chase the guys who were in black Greek fraternities (that were started basically because some black guy was denied a membership) that had little to do with African culture (I know that some Alphas would disagree, yes I am aware of Tutankhamens mask….moving on) that drove cars…..made in EUROPE! I also had numerous teachers conduct lessons on how to look and act like a pre-programmed robot in (and I’ll quote one of them) a “white” world. To me college is college and for the most part they are ALL businesses that are a total rip-off and if you allow yourself to be limited by the lessons driven to you in the classroom then the reality that follows the commencement will be a total b***h……what I’m trying to say is some of you need to get your heads out of your arses and open up your mind! There were white people in the Civil rights struggle and there were white abolitionists and there were also black and Native American slaveholders (gasp!). People marched for equality and if anything some of you need to stop celebrating the King holiday if this type of thing is what makes your blood boil. She has a right to keep the crown just as much as some of you women have a right to get perms, fake body parts and such to “feel better about yourselves”. There are more pressing issues like that gang in L.A. that plotted to eradicate black people for instance!

First off, racism exists. No one is saying it doesn’t. However white people are not permitted have organizations that are designated as exclusive to white folks. Legally they can, but in the eyes of society, they can’t. Another words, if my grandmother started a “White Women’s Sewing Club”, she’d be run out of town as a racist. So far this type of “political incorrectness” has been aimed almost entirely at white folks, and probably for good reason. But the day is not far off when that’s going to have to change. In a multi-cultural, mult-racial society, we are all going to have to leave our personal comfort zone more and more often to allow others into our world.

This beauty pageant winner had the courage to go outside of her comfort zone, and some judges has the courage to go outside of theirs. The end result was that a white condidate won a beauty contest at an historically black college. Like the election of a black President, it couldn’t have happened too soon.

I’m an African American, and I can truly say that black people are as racist as white folks. We are as intolerant as they are. I’m very disappointed at my race so much. We just need to get over this race sht already. The majority of black people must of voted for her. I went to a predominantly white University and was the homecoming king. I got nothing but love from everyone especially the chicks. I’m black but I can’t stand black people in general.

It’s nice to read the responses and see that most everyone is on the same sheet of music. Heck, I was a founding member of the Alpha Phi chapter at my college, although it wasn’t an HBCU. The brothers and sisters were cool, the majority (white) were not so enlightened back in the early 1970s. But people have been doing this for a very long long time. I wasn’t nearly the first white Alpha by any means, even though we are far and few between. Its these kinds of acts between the races, the intermingling at a social level (beyond the inconsequential or trivial) that marks the real progress we make against racism. Here we meet one another on equal footing and allow ourselves to explore areas we might not ever open up to discuss otherwise, whether its a beauty pageant, pledging a frat and becoming a member of a stick, or just being at a pizza party or a concert together. I know much progress has been made at this level, because I’ve been in the middle of it for over 40 years. I have married black and fathered four chilren with this sister, to whom I been married for 31 years now. I look at the ease with which my children wander across racial lines and back, with very little trouble, we own a home in a mixed neighborhood and we all get along reasonably well. The two or three who don’t, just don’t, without any reference to race, they’re just private. Polite and courteous, but private. My kids have had more trouble with their fellow black peers for not being black enough, than they’ve ever had from any white or latino students. But even that’s changing from my oldest (now 30), and my youngest (now 12). She’s down with everyone. Anyway, it’s a shame we still have to have this sort of drama going on in 2009, what with a black president and all, but when you read our collective history back several thousand years, you see we have made considerable progress.

Though it was not necessary for some to be negative towards Churchill for winning because she has as much right to win as anyone else who attends the school, writing to our president was totally unnecessary as he has his hands full with real issues. Some of the issues that are addressed with the President even during his public speakings and from the general public have never been addressed with any other president as if his being president is not taken seriously. To actually classify herself as wanting to see change as the same level of changes Obama has made and is making is inconceivable. To even suggest that Obama has time to go to a campus to promote diversity is like saying that he has all of this idle time and yet we expect so much of him. Simply ridiculous!

And Keblethomas, you sound about as ignorant as they come. To actually state publicy that you’re Black, but do not like your own people in general is such an ignorant thing to say. Actually, it’s folks like you who do not or can not identify with your own race who suppress our people as a race. The pageant was on OCT.9!!!! She wrote this letter on Oct.11!!!! She didnt even give the “Main” student body a chance to get to know her, she smiled in their face and called them racist the next morning!! It wouldnt be a so called uproar or even written as a blog about her winning if she didnt write a letter to Obama saying: “The true reason for the disapproval was because of the color of my skin. I am not African-American.” If thats how you are suppose to represent a Black University, by calling the majority of the school population racist,and at your first sign of adversity you show strong signs of being weak minded, and fragile then you are a miss representation of the women at that school and shoudnt be Miss Hampton not because she’s white but because of her post win actions. If she was not qualified to win, then she should have not been allowed to enter the competition which obviously there is no rule stipulating that she needed to attend the main campus or eat in the cafeteria or join a club, take part in rituals, NOTHING!. They must have had the mentality of “Oh, she isn’t going to win, so who cares?” Well, she won, and now people care. Too late and too bad.

The student body didn’t vote for her. she was chosen by a panel of judges. Her race wasn’t the only thing that bothered some students. They were also upset because she didn’t attend the main campus of Hampton U. She attended classes at the school’s Virginia beach campus.

I go to a mostly White college and we have a chance to vote for our own homecoming king and queen. So that’s unfair of the university to let a panel of judges to vote for something the student body had no control over. Also if it’s true that she called the student body racist and made other negative comments shows her true colors. Basically she has this attitude of I have something y’all want and I’ll shyt on y’all because you couldn’t get it this year.

Here is a President who got involved in the professor Gates issue, Kayan West issue, and trying to lobby for the Olympics for his home town. Wow, I have never read so many close minded replies in one post. These comments are racist and I am ashamed that more people do not realize this. Sure, HBCU are predominantly BLACK but there are still other races that attend. If that were the case, I would not be going LOUISIANA STATE UNIVERSITY (LSU) because it sure is a predominantly WHITE college, although it makes teh effort of calling it a “multicultural university”. This is 2009 not 1909. How can we overcome racism as a whole when we cannot conquer it within ourselves? We get so hung up on color, that we forget the more important things — Like what’s on the inside of a person.

Perhaps if more men took care of their children by paying child support and spending time with them and more women stopped letting different men in and out of your bedroom while your kids play video games then your girls may someday be homecoming queen or even president. all this energy/time/brains put into hair & make-up but nothing is put into figuring out how to help/build up our communities and our youth. People are more concerned about black women winning a beauty pageant then having “bastard misfits” or having more love/respect for one another.
Being a 19 year old and started a before/after-school (“safe haven” u can call it) for many youths on the south side of Chicago. We also do fundraisers and raise money for children in need to be able attend programs that keep them out of trouble. I was able to put some of my friends on and we tutor, we go on field trips, I just took my group to the soul circus, we went to the science museum yesterday. These are kids from ages 7-15 and its crazy how many of the older kids have never stepped inside a museum (i can go on forever). Now we are in the process of renting out a building or space somewhere because we’ve had over 100s of letters from parents donating and wanting to enroll their children.

someone said that she does not deserve to win because she does not go to the main campus. how dumb is that reason. if she goes to an off campus, goes online, or goes to the main campus then she goes to HU. when she pays her tuition i bet it goes to HU, and when she graduates i bet it will say HU on the diploma.

I am glad because black universities are close minded anyways, I see so many Universities that are very diverse with little to no discrimination, hopefully this keeps up so all universities will be diverse, hell I think I just might enroll there myself. Why is it I cannot take my black girlfriend someplace where there are black guys without dirty looks and getting hated on ? Yes there re plenty of famous black women that people think are beautiful, but overall the beauty of most “real-life” black women is ignored. That being said some people feel like out of all the places to ignore black beauty an HBCU would be the last place. I understand why people are upset, but it should have been more of a secret.Times are changing and I think HBCUs are trying to be more diverse, which means more things like this will probably happen. Again students there just probably feel like their space was invaded, like this was the one place we thought we had real chance (because @ other colleges only one of us would probably be included just as a token), and now you come along and take this too. I’m not taking sides because I do understand why the winner is upset and hurt though, let’s face it, it will sound bad if Hampton says, “Only African-American females allowed” If they did that, what happens when a mixed girl who looks white enters? However to be fair to HBCUS other schools have competions like this and exclude black people all the time, they’re just less direct with it. Truthfully if Hampton students/faculty really didn’t like this , then they should follow the examples of white colleges and keep their dislike on the dl and “discriminate” on the dl.

She has every right to win. She is a student there, so she can represent the college. What if students at a traditionally white college got upset if a non-white student won?

As a Grad/Professional student at HU, I wasn’t even aware of the elections until it appeared in the local news. What I am aware of, is an institution populated with students of various shades acting as if they are better than each other. This is my first opportunity attending an HBCU, and societal issues are now the least of my worry. We are not close to being a united people, so I’m sure it was easy for the young lady to win, considering the “black” females’ votes were probably so divided that their chances were limited. My hope is that when these younger individuals join the “real world”, and pursue their chosen professions, they will have grasped the concept that unity starts at home. Diversity is a great thing, but before it can be truly effective WE as a community have to respect each other. Hopefully, this will be an eye opener… “A divided group will always come last, even on your turf.” She won because she received the most votes…. Learning Opportunity…

This is pure craziness, we can say that a black woman can represent the United States of America, in the Miss America, and Miss Universe Pageants, and then turn right around and say that a non-black female can not reprensent Hampton University…..Thats Pure Racism being practiced by Black Students and Faculty of this Esteemed University.

Racism is all about who has all the power, we may have a Black president in the white house, but face it, the Black community has a long way to go before it can claim the kind of institutionalized power that the white community has. So when people cry Racism from the black community I think it’s misguided because the Black community may feel the division but there isn’t much they can do as far as subjugating the rest of America is concerned. That being said I have no problem with this young lady winning her crown, she seemed to have done that fair and square. I can see that the people that posted their comments are “irked”, “ashamed” and “disgusted” by the Black students response but are you really surprised? Much as I advocate for equality even I know that racial tension and the after effects of segregation have not magically evaporated over time. Maybe in a few more years when Black men and women do not feel the need to lay claim to the little they feel they have because they have been freed from the institutionalized discrimination going on today they will be happy for another Nikole Churchill. Till then I hope we grow in to a people able to appreciate and tolerate change.

Sad thing is are we really having this conversation? Isn”t there more important issues to deal with? We as a society are really lacking in the most important areas. Somehow along the way of trying to be accepted, we started to believe giving White people our positions and titles would be the way to go. Even in the day to day I hear some White people use the word n*gga with their Black friends, and for those particular Black people they say they don’t mind. We have degraded ourselves to join hands with these people. I just don’t think that’s how you go about obtaining acceptance and for that matter if that’s the type of “acceptance” we really want.

With that being said as long as this girl really deserved the title and they were not taking it away from an African American who righteously deserved it then I see no real problem.

I also want to add that after all these years, slavery, civil rights, to HALF Black president, by now we should know that White people will NEVER EVER EVER understand what it feels like to endure the amount of racism we have. There is no need to even talk about it with them, they just don’t get it and I don’t think they even try. I think we need to set goals and work quietly and systematically towards them, converse amongst ourselves and keep them in the dark as much as possible. Until we can have a meeting of minds amongst us we cannot expect them to understand us.

Ok..first of all, to Miss HU, I think she needs to MAN up and just deal with the criticism. I mean, congratulations to her and all that — but I don’t think it warranted a “pity” letter to PRESIDENT OBAMA. She should have known that there would be haters considering that Hampton University has a 96% African American population. She should have expected that when she put her name in the hat for this. So given that, I am assuming that the African American contestants felt like they were entitled to win. Just like Hilary Clinton and John McCain thought they were entitled to win the presidency because they were white. I will quote my daughters roommate here who attendS Appalachian State University where the student population is about 90% white. “She pays $13K a year to go to that school so she is entitled to everything that school has to offer”. Well, the same applies to this young lady. Just because she is not black, doesn’t mean she’s not entitled to run for Miss HU or any other office she has interest and will be of service. If she attends HU, that chick is paying over $15K a year to go there. I think she is entitled to run for MS HU if she wants. Apparently, HU thought enough of her to select her to represent the school. So don’t hate on the woman (but Ms. Hampton — if you want to represent the school, maybe you shouldn’t go crying to the president whining about not being accepted). If you are going to represent like you say, then do so by trying to make a positive change on welcoming diversity. This is the perfect opportunity for you to do so. It’s not up to President Obama to do that for you. You and the students at HU have to work together and do that yourselves.

I would just like to add that the crowned the first African-American Homecoming Queen this year at Appalachian State University (again, a population that is about 90% white). I am calling all statistics class students to find the probability of her winning based on the number of students who voted, the number of black students who voted divided by the number of black students who ran and therein lies the answer to the the question how in the world did she win in a predominately black school. Then after you find the answer to that question then the second question is did you vote. If the answer is NO then please stop complaining.
Obviously the number of students (non-Black) + black students was greater than the total number of students per black contestants who actually participated in the voting process divided by the total number of black contestants. Of course if you add these two totals to the total number of students who did not care until this particular non black candidate won and the total number of students who still don’t care then you will get the total number of students in the entire school. The young lady that was crowned queen surely didn’t elect herself and we as a people need to embrace our culture and the many hues of color we possess as well as the cultures and other peoples of color. At 55 years old I lived through the Civil rights era and find that we as a people haven’t grown. The subject of color amongst our own race is never a pleasant one. We need to rebuke discrimination. Grow up, people, because we need you to be the leaders of tomorrow and not the whining babies of today.

We have chilren dying and girls getting pregnant like it a f*ckin cult. Children and in that state especially have problems turning fractions into decimals, do not know what an adverb was,didnt know what a “democratic party” was and dont know how many sex chromosomes are present in a sex cell AND THEY WERE IN a VA COLLEGE AND PRODUCTS OF a VA School Systems.

I think what alot of people outside of the HBCU ciruit fail to realize is The students had absolutely no say in who actually won, unlike crowing mss homecoming and stuff this pageant is acutally a real pageant that has a real panel of judges. THis isnt a real popularity contest in , “well i like her so il vote for her” . Also she isnt even a pyshical student ( like a student who physically goes to the school) she takes classes over the internet wtf lol

Some of these attitudes will continue to keep racism alive and well! I doubt seriously that this 20-something young woman has been discriminating against blacks for centuries. Why would she even go to Hampton University if she had THAT issue? There appear to be many people who are trying to work together, but some attitudes will continue the divide unless there is a willingness on ALL sides to STOP generalizing!!! AND it looks like President Obama will be the commencement speaker this year!!! Woo hoo!!!

Its a college pageant so that means anyone who goes to school there can or should be able to compete in any activity. Racism will always exist in each race. If it was an all black event catoring to us then i can see why people would get mad but since its a school event then there is no reason for this nonsense. There is no such thing in my opinion a black school, a white school, a mexican school, and ect…. school is school. Yes there are places where one race may congegrate more than others, its a public place so anyone is allowed unless its a private event or private. The reality is there will always be ignorant people in this world. As a black woman, it is nice to have events that is specifically for us and by us but i also like to be cultured and be around and be part of multicultured events.
