DiverseCollegeGrads

From Newsweek:

Barry Mills, the president of Bowdoin College, was justifiably proud of Bowdoin’s efforts to recruit minority students. Since 2003 the small, elite liberal-arts school in Brunswick, Maine, has boosted the proportion of so-called underrepresented minority students (blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans, about 30 percent of the U.S. population) in entering freshman classes from 8 percent to 13 percent. “It is our responsibility, given our place in the world, to reach out and attract students to come to our kinds of places,” he told a NEWSWEEK reporter. But Bowdoin has not done quite as well when it comes to actually graduating minorities. While nine out of 10 white students routinely get their diplomas within six years, only seven out of 10 black students made it to graduation day in several recent classes.

The picture of diversity—black, white, and brown students cavorting or studying together out on the quad—is a stock shot in college catalogs. The picture on graduation day is a good deal more monochromatic. “If you look at who enters college, it now looks like America,” says Hilary Pennington, director of postsecondary programs for the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which has closely studied enrollment patterns in higher education. “But if you look at who walks across the stage for a diploma, it’s still largely the white, upper-income population.”

The United States once had the highest graduation rate of any nation. Now it stands 10th. For the first time in American history, there is the risk that the rising generation will be less well educated than the previous one. The graduation rate among 25- to 34-year-olds is no better than the rate for the 55- to 64-year-olds who were going to college more than 30 years ago. Studies show that more and more poor and nonwhite students aspire to graduate from -college—but their graduation rates fall far short of their dreams. The graduation rates for blacks, Latinos, and Native Americans lag far be-hind the graduation rates for whites and Asians. As the minority population grows in the United States, low college–graduation rates become a threat to national -prosperity.

finances is always a factor. and many times they’re the first in the family to attend and the family can’t give’em the needed support and guidance.

also, all those whts that graduate dont’t earn their grades. i remember while taking tests in lecture halls i felt a stare then looked up to see the prof staring at me; all around me whts were passing notes and whispering answers. they cheat they a55es off! some profs are less inclined to give As and Bs to blks or latinos (they’re conditioned to). i remember having to take a few exams to the prof and question the grading.

There are numerous reasons, some of which Jack_Stephen1 touched on (finances, support, etc). There are not enough resources to help students find scholarships and grants or advance (AP) courses, which help accelerate their undergrad programs. Many of these kids are not college-prepped in high school—or even in grammar school. Not to mention, the academic cirricula in many schools is FAR lacking; a student who may have earned A’s and B’s in high school doesn’t always do well at the university level. Even if they do well enough on standardized tests such as the SAT or ACT, they may not be used to the rigors of academic life that college demands of them…it can be an issue of discipline.

And that is just a part of it. There are also other forces working against students; there is no sense of expectation by a child’s family, community, society to go to college. We do this to ourselves as black people; we place so much emphasis on celebrity, wealth and fame. Those things are nice to have and can be obtained, but whatever happened to using one’s mind? Whatever happened to having a Plan B just in case that modeling career doesn’t work out? Why can’t we exploit our intellect the way we exploit our sexuality? We have been so focused on wealth and not substance that we are taking the little bit of decision-making power that we have out of Corporate America. It’s a shame, really.

It is simple to understand why Blacks aren’t graduating from college as much as they used to do. Number one reason the U.S Economy isn’t as good as it used to be and therefore a limited number of jobs for graduating college students regardless of race. Now factor in racism as most know by now a white male with a convicted felon record is twice employed over a blackmale with a college degree.

Most of these kids are finding from their friends whom already graduated and can’t find jobs are converting to “Plan B”, hate to say it. But most of you don’t understand the dilemia of struggling Black youth today whom are growing up in a difficult time in U.S history. Used to be many Blacks whom got edcuation such as Dentist, Accountant or Lawyer went back into the Black community, opened a practice and prospered. Now the Black community no longer supports it’s own businesses or corporations like Walmart, HomeDepot, Kaiser Permente have taken over most of the business everywhere in America from small businesses. Then you have to consider college level jobs are scarce plus racism is at a high as whites compete for the same jobs too along with Hispanics and Asians. Black youth are most vunerable because Blacks don’t stick together and there’s no future in corporations or small business for them. So entertainment or sports is a good route because at least the Black community supports that and Blacks are excell above other races in both fields.

    P.S

Stop finding negative reasons to down your own people. Our people do like knowledge and don’t like it less than anyone else. But you can’t build just go to school and then be faced with nothing for all your time invested.

I am a black man and I graduated college when I was 22 years old. My little brother graduated college when he was 21. I have another little brother who is attending college now and my beloved sister will be in college when she graduates high school. My older sister graduated college and is a teacher. We are a collegiate family and we are black and proud.

I followed the example of my older sister and my younger siblings follow my example.

you have so many excuses im surprised you can get out of bed.

the simple fact is many black youth are lacking the discipline to sit in a classroom for long periods of time learn, and after class is over stay in your room and study for a couple hours.

a degree takes commitiment and sacrafice many black youths are not ready to give up.they still want to have fun and keep that ignorant thug mentality.

many young blacks want to go to the grand universities but arent prepared for the course cirriculums in those institutions, they would fare way better in c**munity colleges until they can build up the tollerence to attend a university.

last unlike years ago when education was cherished in the black comunity as a equalizer these day many black people and communities dont enforce it to their youth, but if you can shoot a basketball or play football everyone loves you.

I went to college and I can tell you we had money and family issues and the loans that were available when I was in school there not there now the love black people showed for each other is not there now, even white teachers are not as helpful when it comes to nurchering young black minds…..And to simply say that black youth are the problem is wrong…..Lets be real there is no real commitment to developing black minds in this country the only institutions that have a desire for black youth are the military and the criminal justice system…..And they don’t recruit Asians or Whites..

Jack I feel you on the cheating thing. I’m in a master program and there is an older European women in my online financial management class who is supposed to be getting a PhD. This woman copied and pasted my paper and tried to claim it as her own. I reported it to the professor not sure what happened but she is still in the class. IT makes me wonder if this woman is in her 40′s and already has a masters and is still cheating obviously it is probably not the first time.

@deshawn121 – I’m surprised you speak of excuses when you yourself have so many yourself. The issue is not commitment, but lack of resources, support or even mentality at often times in the schools that house minorities.

The problem that causes a lot of miscommunication is that the statistics do not account for all of those that graduate. As stated in the article, 7 out of 10 within 6 years, but it does not account for those that graduate in more than 6 years. The ones that also transfer to different school aren’t counted in the graduation rate of a particular university, so the specific graduation rate is skewed by quite a few different situational anomalies that are often within the minority communities that may run out of finances for school or just find that specific university isn’t their slice of pie.

There are many different reasons for the way that the statistics turn out the way they do, but it is not attributed to just one specific reasoning. Yes, there are many different problems that need resolution within the community including those that prevent college attendance, graduation and even furthering life.

In my humble opinion, too many blacks aren’t putting in quality study time in the early years of life. They are faking their way through high school by cheating or getting by because they play sports. In addition, a large portion of the black kids comes from broken homes, drug homes, homes that are in complete chaos. These kids simply don’t have a place to study. And the smart black kids that pick up the high school subjects faster than the average kids, bomb when it comes to the abstract subjects of college. They never developed the study skills needed to conquer the harder subjects, and end up failing.

It’s not going to be easy to fix this problem because it takes a lot of effort from everybody to fill black minds with knowledge. Even so, we must encourage young kids to read, read, and read books from the front to the back. By the time a black child enters college, they should have already read over seventy-five books from front to back, and that doesn’t include the school books. When they come across a word that they don’t know, they must look it up, learn it, and commit it to memory. Moreover, kids must understand the concept of delayed gratification. This means they must learn how to work hard for something even though they may not see the payoff for years. Turn off the damn television.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/The_Golden_One/ The_Golden_One

I think it all depends on the college. The college I attend now is full of Blacks, Latinos, Asians, Middle Easterners, and white people are the minority in my school. We always have a big graduating class and more than half of every class is filled with people of color. So in my environment this article does not apply. However, finances is a BIG reason. It is hard maintaining grants, loans, scholarships, etc. I have lost a few grants while attending school all because of living situations, parents’ income… There are tons of factors as to why minorities are not graduating but I pray that this article sparks someone’s spirit to make sure that our people graduate college.

@ Deshawn I have to agree with you we are making too many excuses. I met students from other countries some that could barely speak english but they were dedicated to working hard to get good grades.

A large number of the brothers I saw got caught up in going to parties, drinking, smoking and chasing the ladies.

They did not have the discipline it takes to study every day, complete their homework and make it to those 8 & 9am classes. I hated my 8am classes. In college you don’t have time worrying about your family or community not supporting you. This is your Job for the next four years.

@Shenan I agree that we need more discipline in the art of studying. Blacks need to show their kids the importance of getting a good education.

The majority of my instructors where always willing to help me. If I where a couple of points from receiving an A or B my instructor would give me the A or B because they knew that I worked as hard as I could in the classroom.

honestly college just takes too long. 5, 6 more years of school after i had just gotten through w/ 13? since i was going to be schooling/working forever anyway, i moved on and got married and had my 2 kids. though i admit it’s much harder now going to school this way, life is bigger than school and work all the time

Its sad when u look at it bcuz, education use to be dam near FREE, now everything has dollar tag associated with it, and for what? to be taught by an idiot…lol! It is so many crazy people out here making money on people for their financial gain. Now corporate america is playing the MBA game in order for you to make a certain salary and be secure in ur field, but its gonna cost u over $100k in student loans to get there…LETS GET REAL PEOPLE, school is a joke when u hit the college level. Pick up a bible and read it, u will find its the BEST education u will ever need – real talk!
It’s a lot of folk out here who are so called educated, but smoke dope, drink alcohol, and do the dumbest things, but they are EDUCATED…Lol

SOME colleges are good , but there many out there say one thing, but do little to help you get a job or just ignore you when you reach the end. And even if you do get that paper (like I did), there’s no guanrantee that you’ll land your dream job and had to repay that costly loan and the intersts. Also many foreigners get to go FREE or little cost and the goverment push them, while I spent tons of money and got back nothing; college to me was a MONEY PIT……So much for helping EVERYBODY in America…..

the mindset is what matters. at a HBCUs you will understand. some dont go there to graduate

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/deshawn121/ deshawn121

willylandis hit the nail on the head, we all heard the stories and seen th footage about HBCU’s.

jazzwatch has a point, if you are sacrificing time and money for a degree, GET A DEGREE IN SOMETHING THAT WILL MAKE YOU MONEY,many people dream jobs may not be all that valuable in the real world.

I know one thing doctor or health professional ,lawyer, accountant, It,mba in business, the odds are in their favor of having employment as soon as they graduate.

masculine you got some great excuses, good luck in life.

deletha j if you are looking at kanya and eminem for life lessons you are on a downward slope to poverty. success in music or sports is so rare that you would have a better chance of getting hit by lightning twice.

Worked my ass off since kindergarden, got good grades, went ot vocational school in addition to high school, good B average marks, never got a scholarship (or at least a partial one) had to a partial student loan (had to use most of MY money to pay for it while the foreigners go free) got the degree, still working a s**tty jobs and about to lose this one and start all over again….College experience to me is nothing just a MONEY PIT……if I wanted long winded preaching I would go to church instead (some of them are as crooked as college,too)…..

LET’S FACE IT THE SYSTEM IS SET UP FOR BLACK PEOPLE TO FAIL… I COME FROM A FAMILY OF 12… AND EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US IS AT THE TOP OF OUR PROFESSION… BUT NOT BECAUSE OF COLLEGE… DON’T GET ME WRONG WE ALL WENT TO COLLEGE AND GRADUATED WITH HONORS… BUT WE ALSO SELF TAUGHT OURSELVES.. BECAUSE WHITE PEOPLE NEVER TEACH A BLACK PERSON THE WHOLE TRUTH ABOUT NOTHING… BECAUSE THEY KNOW THAT WE WILL SUCCEED ABOVE AND BEYOND THEM EASILY… WE CATCH ON QUICKER THAN ANY RACE OF PEOPLE THAT I KNOW… AND ONCE THAT FLAME IS LIT.. THERE’S NO STOPPING A BLACK CONSCIOUSNESS FROM EXCELLING…

I WENT TO AN HBCU IN THE SOUTH LOUISIANA TO BE EXACTLY WHERE RACISM IN THE SOUTH IS VERY PREVALENT. I WENT TO COLLEGE AND GRAD SCHOOL GRADUATED BOTH FULL SCHOLARSHIPS AND ENTERED THE WORK FORCE AFTER YEARS OF TRYING. I DIDNT GET MAD AFTER THAT FIRST YEAR AND SAY SCHOOL IS FOR SUCKERS OR BECAUSE IM BLACK OR THIS AND THAT. I DID OTHER JOBS AND OTHER THINGS TO BUY MY TIME. NOT JUST ME MANY OF MY CLASSMATES I GRADUATED WITH ALOT OF THEM ARE DOING WELL FOR THEMSELVES ACROSS THE COUNTRY. WE ALL GREW UP POOR IN THE SOUTH IN THE COUNTRY, THE BAYOUS, AND THE GHETTO. WE NEVER STOPPED. REGARDLESS OF HOW PISSY THE SITUATION GOT AND HOW DEPRESSED WE WERE. AFTER 3 YEARS GOT THE JOB OF MY DREAMS IN MY FIELD. LIFE GOES ON I STILL HAD TO WORK SO I TAUGHT FOR A YEAR OR TWO. TEACHING OTHERS IN BAD AREAS THEY CAN DO THE SAME. LIFE IS NOT SUPPOSE TO BE EASY. I SACRIFICED GOING OUT TO THE CLUBS, FOOTBALL GAMES, HOMECOMING, MARDI GRAS, FRATERNITIES. I WENT TO SOME BUT MAJORITY OF THEM I DIDNT CAUSE I HAD PRIORITIES AND I KNEW I COULDNT BLAME NO ONE BUT MYSELF IF I FAIL. NOW SOME PEOPLE ARENT MADE FOR COLLEGE THATS FINE. THEY CAN STILL KICK ASS TO GET WHERE THEY NEED TO BE AND DO IT LEGALLY. THE ONES THAT WENT TO ALL THOSE EVENTS I MENTIONED BEFORE. TOOK 6,8, AND 10 YEARS TO GET THROUGH UNDERGRAD AND SOME NEVER MADE IT.

Neither of my parents graduated from high school. My mother never even made it to High School. They couldn’t help me when the help was needed. I am the fourth child of seven. Directly in the middle. The second oldest was the only one other than me to graduate. My brother right above me passed away when I was in the sixth grade. My oldest brother went to the gang life. Second oldest was in a boys home which pushed him to graduate. After he left there he started partying. Never went to college. I took a year off after graduation and then went to a community college. It was all I knew. I’m the type to pick up things real quick. Never had to study in high school so I wasn’t prepared for all the work that I would have to study. this wasn’t the reason for my drooping out though. All these things made it hard but the reason I dropped out I had no control over. The nursing home I had to train at a couple times a week I could not make it to. I had no car, my dad worked at the same time and buses didn’t get me there early enough. No one I trained with at that location could pick me up. So even if I didn’t drop I would’ve failed. Even told the teacher of my issue with the location but she couldn’t switch my location. Now I have a two year old, I’m happily married and he makes enough money to support all of us. I still have a mind that hungers for knowledge so even though I’m not in school I still research things I’m interested in. School at this time wasn’t God’s plan for me. Maybe in the future. Right now the plan for me is to be a mother.

Blacks don’t graduate or attend college because of the vicious cycle devised by the WM. It starts with children having children, single mothers, no grants, loans that students have to pay on for years, if they do graduate, racists instructors in college, racist counselors in high school that (forget) to tell students what classes they need for college, low playing jobs, no financal training and can just cloth and feed their children. Shall I go on????? If it hadn’t been for my parents drilling into me and my brother from kindergarten that we were going to get a college education, we probably wouldn’t have one either. And they started saving for our educations when we were born. I got an Associate Degree, then went into the military in the 70′s and they paid for the rest of my education and now I work for the government. I thought that was the least I could do so my parents could save for their retirement. Now, who wants to get shipped to Afghanistan to get an education? My brother did the same thing. It’s a different game now. I feel sorry for those coming along, but they can do it if they really want to. Never Give Up!
