“Cotton-picking” is a common phrase that people most of the time don’t really think about when they say it. This more like an “oops” moment. Now if he had said, “Obama should go pick cotton” then there certainly would be a problem. But in this case, I think he was just using it as an adjective and was unfortunate enough to use it on a Black person without realizing how it could have been perceived.

The term “cotton pickin” was used often by members of my family and later (even now) as an adjective to describe frustration about any particular incident a person was describing. Example: “Ow, I just hit my cotton pickin’ little toe on the night stand.” Mr. Rick Sanchez, who hails from the south, with the same verbal understanding of the words did not, I repeat, did not mean anything racist in using that comment to describe his frustration with people who were criticizing the President. One of the reasons the Black community is in the disarray we find ourselves in today is a lack of passing along information like this to our younger generation. Origins of terms like ” he/she sold me down the river”, “that takes the cake” and other now seldom used terms should be explained and passed on to the next generation so that when they hear them for the first time, they’re not shocked or take a misconstrued account of what the person using them is actually saying.

What I’m about to say is NOT to be taken as being disrespectful to anyone, but some of you need to go back to school and study history particularly black history and sociology.

The (expression)… cotton picking… has NO relationship to expressing any form of racial bias, racial overtone, or intended in a racial context. Pete Sanchez has been a staunch supporter of President Obama from the time he declared for the presidency, so let’s get that out of the way.

For those of you who might be unknowing, the expression (cotton picking) is just that an expression that many people use regardless of ethnicity to mean dismay, surprise, or even disgust or anger at something that happened or being said. That is the typical use of the expression.

For example, if I said, “I wish Digg-it-Up would become more educated and get his cotton picking facts straight.”… does that mean he’s young and stupid or does it mean he might be confused about the use of colloguial expressions used by people other than himself who might be older or otherwise exposed than him?

My late father used to use expressions like, “Get the sam hill outa my way!” or “Those neople over there are idiots talking all that cotton picking mess.”

Why do some of us like to waste time on nonsensical stuff like this? And, why do some of us on this site allow ourselves to be easily drawn into debates that have no substantive or redeeming value? Some of us live to pick at (anything) that comes across the screen that confuses the mind. So what does that say about the (individual) who repeats the same behavior day in and day out in these News One threads?

Are some of us cotton picking tired of the stupid stuff?
