Mom and Dad need to do a better job of raising kids. Stop letting Mtv and BET set the standards. Stop jumping on websites like this to praise nicki minaj and lil wayne. Fathers need to BE THERE, and present what they want their sons to become. Mother’s are great, but can not do that alone. Yes black male teachers are much needed in the schools, but home needs to be engraved first and foremost. If home is solid, then not too much in the streets can feter a child.

If true this is a sad statistic to report on, but even at this day and age, very believeable. Unfortunately a lot of times education isn’t stressed in some black households for obvious reasons such as: no positive role models, parents who either don’t care or aren’t there to provide the resources to ensure their child(ren) gets an education. Some black children themselves aren’t motivated enough to finish school for various reasons.

At the sametime a lot of brothers are getting their GED

Back in the day students received a diploma if they successfully completed the 12th grade. Now students have to complete the 12th grade and pass the high school graduation test. These test are normally given in the 10th or 11th grade. The rational for some students who drop out of school is… “Why bother to continue school if I know I cant pass the test.”

Another issue is parental involvement tends to decline when students enter high school. Big Mistake!! This is the time they need you the most. We want them to be responsible, but we still need to be visible in the school, and check behind them like we do our younger kids.

We need to police our own kids by monitoring their choice in friends, their facebook page and etc…. Often times we make the mistake of trying to be their friend instead of being their parent. I have a girlfriend who is a correctional officer who has questioned several inmates about why they are in prison and their response overwhemingly has been, ” I wish my parents would have been harder on me.”

Where are the parents for these young men. Most of you are guilty of neglecting your own child.

whewww all that talk seriously made me horny! You know, I don’t think many black women would agree with your talk. They site that they are going to school at great rates, more than men, and getting employed more than black men now too, so it’s a black male problem and they don’t give a feck. I see a lot of programs aimed at advancing black girls, because many deem black males too much of a headache. We did a mock-interview run for a while, and I asked some people to send some kids from highschools and not one scout came back with a black male child!!!! They claimed the black boys didn’t seem to give a shiite so they didn’t bother to try to convince them. This is truly the nation of let a black man die. It seriously pains me that even when I try to connect with the young, black children, there is just such a gap between us, that they die off from all of the programs I’ve ever participated in, to help them get ahead. I guess, when you return to the hood, you have much more heavy worries than trying to truck it to my locations, in hopes of bettering yourself. You’ve still 10 years more of hood life before you can use things I teach, to help you escape your situation. That is what many youth tell me and I become sad, myself, at that point. I have a kid now, I got him bussed to a soccer camp, all the summer, and he stayed with my coach. He LOVED it being away, but now that he’s back in the hood, he stopped contacting us, he’s back to his ways. I just don’t know what to do, for this kids, anymore. Shiite pains me.

You hit the nail right on the head! God bless you for being a black woman and being able to see that. Many of our people have fallen for the REVERSE PSYCHOLOGY they’ve been dropping on us and actually believe that our kids[especially black males] really desire to grow up and be nothing. They fail to realize all the things that silently put us under attack and manipulate our judgment.

My word as bond, what’s wrong with these kids today is that they see how we are living and they realize their future aint hitting on sh*t. It don’t take long to be a black male and realize you got a rocky ass road ahead of you. One where you will be hated, doubted, not much expected of, feared, singled out, outcast, blamed, suspicious, rejected, looked down on, thought less of, not understood, etc.

The plan is to wear down your mind and hit you with that negativity so much that after awhile you begin to believe that you are all those things. If you grow up in an area where many men have been defeated and have fell into the trap, it will be hard for the young male to believe he has a future unless he has a great source of support emotionally that is strong and encouraging, because if not seeing those around him will constantly remind him of what his future may be and when he begins to meet all the resistance prepared for him he’ll start to understand what happened to those other black men he saw and may go to sit on the sideline with them. Defeated.

I mean go to any hood in the States, hell even go to any hood in the islands (I suspect Africa too) and you will see black men failing/lagging in the system. The first thing I would like to state is that Black Planet does not focus on anything positive. I have noticed that more than half of the articles are negative. We need to know the truth,but there should also be good things posted instead so much hearsay I am very disappointed.

In regards to our educational system this has been going on and discussed for quite sometime. I believe that part of the problem is more then half of the families in low income areas are single-parent households with no father present. I am a prodigy of that but I had my mother who I loved and feared,so I would do no wrong. Today,things are different and much more difficult. I think we as a people need to pull together to help one another. This is the reason why we continue to come up short. I know that years of slavery,manipulation and everything else has done damage,but until we start working together things will never change. We don’t even recognize each other in the stores. No hello,how are you,none of that. My hope is that someday things will change and we will learn to like and love one another.

We are living below our potential. I grew up in Detroit,MI and watched people from the middle east move in and buy up all of the convenience and grocery stores,as well as the gas stations in a all black neighborhood. The Arabs all lived on the other side of E.7 mile and State Fair near WoodWard. The worked together and built that area up. There were churches and Arab supermarkets and everything else.

We need to do this but it can not be achieved until we are as one. Then our children will see and learn this behavior and it will spread and become natural. This will break the chains that have held us back as a people for so long.

Our children will have hope because there will always be someone there to support and show them the way. They will have examples to follow in regards to school and family. There would be few single-parent households and more male doctors and lawyers.

Our people keep hearing those same stories of ‘this hood’ and ‘that hood’, this rapper being shot and ‘that’ man going to prison, as well as the FIRST lesson in black history that children get, (Including myself when I hit school WAY back when!), is SLAVERY! Blacks need to stop blaming the ‘white’ operated school systems for their not doing well, but themselves. I went to all white schools and encountered severe racism that nearly cost me my life. Later Blacks and Mexicans were bussed and every Black and Mexican was put into the ‘retarded’ classes, as myself. The white teachers to my face, told me they would not teach me and I had several teachers who refused to even allow me in their class due to my race. I was even called ‘Picaninny’ by one of them. I taught myself, when they refused to teach me which was ALL THE TIME. When they put us in the ‘dummy’ reading classes I taught myself and was NUMBER 1 in my state for reading more than 24k words in 2 months. When they put me in dummy math classes I became youngest nursing student at age 11. When the tried to put me in dummy English classes I wrote nearly 2 dozen books/screen plays (not published) and later in college was accepted in Phi Theta, Alpha Eta and Honors and later tutored ENGLISH, ESL, math, Spanish and other subjects.

I DID NOT allow racists to prevent me from learning nor allow MIS-EDUCATION to make me INANE.

I feel Blacks and others need to STOP blaming the white race for failing and they need to build their OWN schools and TEACH themselves. SOULSACRED…..you hit the nail on the head. I have worked with SEVERAL teachers who are mainly white females. You have your few black females in the mix, but still. I have seen NOT ONE black male as a teacher, but I only saw ONE black male as a principal.

No one can do as much for a young black male as a grown black male. We can try our best, but it still may not fully measure up for him. I know of many black men who grew up without fathers and still managed to be successful, but the pain of not having a direct male role model in their lives is still there. I know this only because they have expressed it to me.
