Black Soldiers Misrepresented In Virginia Textbook

The Washington Post reports that a textbook given to fourth-graders in the Commonwealth of Virginia details that thousands of African American soldiers fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War — a claim rejected by most Civil War historians.

“Our Virginia: Past and Present” is a textbook given to children at Virginia public schools for the first time this fall, the Post reports. Virginia is a state that, like Texas, can boast a deep history worth teaching.

Of course some of that history is shameful, and true local patriots believe that misrepresenting that shame only perpetuates an affront against the entire Commonwealth. Hence Virginia education officials are asking teachers to pass over a passage that would not withstand the scrutiny of a few fact-checking Google searches.

The Post reports that College of William & Mary historian Carol Sheriff called out the textbook’s author, Joy Masoff — who is not a professional historian — on including an account that has been debunked by historians.

The claim endorsed by Masoff and, now, elementary school textbooks adopted statewide, stems from the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a pride organization that boasts that many black soldiers fought on the side of the South. The group also disputes that slavery was the primary point of disagreement that sparked the Civil War, claiming instead that the South fought “to preserve their homes and livelihood,” the Post reports.

The same shameful agenda that was done in the past regarding improperly representing Black males continues to be done today when it comes to all Black Soldiers, male and female!!

    i believe it cuz theres still blacks fighting against each other till this day. there will always be a sub group of blacks that hate OTHER blacks, its part of the reason why we are here now. i think our problems as a people STARTED in africa. we’ve always had sell outs, now we just call them black republiklans.

    Black people have always been fools in this country, fighting for that WHITEMAN,now they fight with the same devil they should be fighting against.All these blacks serving in the military now and back then, hasn’t changed a damn thing for blacks in this country.And you serving still don’t make whitefolks love, and/or respect you,to them you’re just a warm body serving their purpose.After all the rich whites, and alot of the poor ones feels,it’s better you then them.

    This is in part true…There were thousands of black soldiers for the confederacy, BUT it wasn’t due to sheer pride and joy. They were FORCED, meaning join or DIE. Some were simply nurses aide’s, attendants etc. Others joined the confederacy in order to be able to travel with white people from state to state without being ‘captured’ so to speak, where they then indeed did try to escape. But the BULK of our black people were LIED TO. They were promised land, money and above all, they were promised to be reunited with their wives and children who were sold away to other states/plantations if they joined the confederates.

    I mean black people do some strange shyt at times, but does anyone really THINK that as bad as slavery was, that there were actually THOUSANDS of blacks fighting to remain enslaved? Fight for the side that is raping, murdering, beating, dividing and destroying us? That just doesn’t make a bit of sense….

    what?! nothings changed. blacks will still defend these racist mofos at every turn while saying “theyre not THAT racist, they only say that blacks are the reason for the financial crash, the defecit, the murder rate, etc”. and blacks will actually agree with them against their OWN intrest. it was only 150 years ago and the symptoms are still popping up to this day.

    they are practicing what the romans and greeks did….when they conquer thier enemies they change up thier history so they will lose what they know about themselves and identify with their conquerors and become easily controlled…

    this works on MOST OF my fellow blacks very well due to the fact that they are susceptable to swollowing everybody elses bullshyt….why are blacks so easy to brainwash i dont know….there big noses must be too heavy for them……their brain having problem balancing that big azz nose and lip prolly….

    it wont work on me tho…i rather chop my nose and lips off than be brainwashed….

    Hey Cali, you remember the mut from La. you had a disagreement with? The one with the rebel flag on her page? And she had the nerve to comment about her black ancestors fighting in the civil war due to pride. Perfect example of the ending result of us(well part of us) not seeking the truth. That was hilarious to me.
    If you were to take any group from there origin; after so long they will forget who they are. Then to make matters worse, the oppressor knows just what to do to keep them in the dark. Well, that and the fact that we just don’t like to read. It’s amazing the very thing that they use as a means of mental and spiritual control has all of our history in it.
