Woman - braids pool

FROM WNYC.org:

Swimming is a great form of exercise, a refreshing summer activity and an important life skill. Yet African American women seem to be…let’s say less than enthusiastic.

“Oh no, black women don’t swim.” Michael Hawkins, an instructor at Hair Design Institute in Manhattan, often hears that from clients, students and some stylists when the subject of swimming comes up. “She’s not getting her hair wet. No that’s not gonna happen.”

Most African-American women wear their hair chemically straightened or relaxed.

To get that look, stylsts often use a chemical called sodium hydroxide to re-shape black hair into a straighter form. But pool water can be detrimental to that.

“A lot of the chlorine in the water, sometimes the salt or whatever works against the actual relaxer that you put in the hair. So over time you end up having breakage or hair shedding, coming out, things like that.”

Black females have too much fake hair to swim. Besides that, most are too body conscious to be seen in revealing attire.(for GOOD reason)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/AngryCornflakes/ AngryCornflakes

I wish these articles would say things like AMERICAN Black women cuz i come from an island where women swim all the time

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NorthPhillyMan/ NorthPhillyMan

They don’t want to get their fooking hair wet. Maybe if they took all of that bulls**t out of their hair, they could live a normal life and not have to act like lunatics about getting their (fake) hair wet.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/taurus216/ taurus216

    must have very dirty heads

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Johnny_Walker/ Johnny_Walker

Yea…I wouldn’t want all those chemicals in the water with me anyway.

For the guys: Have you ever seen an attractive girl and said: “Damn! Look at that hair!! That girl is hot!”

I never have…I wish women put as much effort in their bodies and BRAINS, as their hair.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CaliFemme23/ CaliFemme23

AngryCornflakes, Correction, how about these news articles and YOU BLACK MEN just stop generalizing american black women PERIOD, because NONE OF YOU HAVE MET EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US TO MAKE SUCH DUMB ASS A*SSUMPTIONS!
I happen to be an american black woman, it is the summer time, 100+ degrees where I live, and Myself, my daughters, niece and my sister SWIM EVERYDAY! Well looky there! Daughters, niece and sister! *GASP*! They are american black women too!!!! Can you believe it!?!

Johnny_Walker, “Yea…I wouldn’t want all those chemicals in the water with me anyway”
Did you even read the article before you put your foot in your mouth as well??? It’s called CHLORINE brother. The article clearly states…

“To get that look, stylsts often use a chemical called sodium hydroxide to re-shape black hair into a straighter form. But pool water can be detrimental to that.”

POOL WATER CAN BE DETRIMENTAL TO THAT….Meaning black women don’t leave chemicals in the pool because chlorine KILLS IT. So what chemicals are you afraid of being in the water with you??? The chlorine does the damage, NOT hair products. And correction AGAIN…How about you wish that THE WOMEN YOU MEET SPENT MORE TIME ON THEIR BRAINS AND BODIES than their hair…You haven’t met all of us, you can’t speak on all of us, just those dumb asses you know of with nice hair and nothing else…

For the ladies: Have you ever seen an attractive guy and said: “Damn, he looks like he’s intelligent!”

HELL MUTHAFCKIN NAW!!!! Black male and intelligent seem to be OXYMORONS these days….Hence johnny_walker and every other guy that commented….

@AngryCornflakes-I agree with you and still say they need to break it down even more. Im also sick of hearing their poor a$$ reason who why black women this and that. Im black and my reason for not swimming has NOTHING to DO WITH MY DAMN HAIR NOR MY BODY SHAPE OR SIZE. Plus you got dumb a$$ white people who DIED all because they want to swim in places(BLACK WOMEN)don’t swim and ya’ll call us everything put (black) women top of all things wrong…well put us last on not DYING from a DAMN SHARK attack and put WHITE PEOPLE A$$ FIRST and ask WHY DO MANY WHITE PEOPLE DIE FROM SWIMMING and lets us answer that question instead of posting Why Many Black Women Won’t Go Swimming? I don’t FU(KING swim because
    1)SHARKS,GATORS,SNAKES,etc in the fu(King water.
2)Public pools are nasty they PISS,HAVE SEX,and they BLOW THEIR NOSE in the water.
3)Thats my fu(king reason so STOP FU(KING USING THE BLACK WOMANS HAIR IS THE REASON WHY SHE DON’T SWIM. HELL ITS ALOT OF WHITE AND OTHER RACE OF WOMEN WHO DON’T SWIM EITHER. Just KNOW WE WASH OUR A$$/PU$$IE/BODY WITH A MOTHERFU(KING WASH-CLOTH AND THEY DON’T…amongst other things the WHITE RACE do and don’t do. Lets hear that for a change other than the sun bullsh!t you gave them a higher rate on.(JMO)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/jazzwatch/ jazzwatch

Carolinagirl, I’d seen MANY sistas swim in the pool and they’re quite GREAT at it, but you’re right about the public pools which is why I don’t go to them…rather o to a PRIVATE or pool that is in a apartment complex (expensive) where they won’t allow unruly people to swim at…….

For the guys: Have you ever seen an attractive girl and said: “Damn! Look at that hair!! That girl is hot!”

Yes! Right on! Reminds me of how my ex use to drive me crazy whenever she appeared in hair curlers and a beat up old t-shirt. I wish women would really pay attention to what men want. We don’t care about your shoes or your hair, but if that body is kicking…….

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/symphonee/ symphonee

What type of fuc*kery is this article?!! And some of you “men” just fall in line with this dunb sh!t!!

    Just to inform you as*sholes
    1. They are PLENTY of women who do not wear fake hair and have no problem putting on a bathing suit. They are women of all shapes and sizes, some in shape and some not, a good number of both will wear a bathing suit

    2. I have seen “grown men” who refused to get in a pool because they said it would mess up their waves.

    3. The chemicals in most pools clean out a good number of chemicals, so you won’t going swimming through it. You are more likely to recircle back through the trail of piss you left behind sir

    4. There are women who put as much effort into the inside as they do the outside. You may not be encountering them because they see you as the opposite. Besides communication is a big boy method that men use to tell their women how they feel about her lack of effort in her personal appearance.

    5. Once again the people in the offices of Blackplanet are laughing at how the monkeys lined up for the circus and did the tricks like they have always been trained to do. Some men will complain about us dogging them out and calling them a million different names and not standing by them, but the minute some asinine sh!t like this is posted they fall right back into the foolishness that divides us. To the guys who commented on this, please DO NOT get riled up when women dogg men out on a biased male bashing post because karma is a b!tch!!

I am a water baby and in 12 years of American living I NEVER could get an African-American in the pool. Not necessarily because of the hair issue but because many did not know how to swim or were not strong swimmers.

My Caribbean and African friends on the other hand were like me – some Summer you can’t keep us out of the water, especially the ocean. I live one block from the beach and cannot WAIT for Summer :) Mx

next… Why don’t they do an article or petition a hair care line(particularly a black owned hair line) to create a product that helps protect chemically relaxed hair from chlorine damage? Hmmmm…instead of reporting the same old boring story.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/devilishangelrjp/ devilishangelrjp

I don’t swim because I can’t swim. I have tried to learn, and I just couldn’t get it to work. Doesn’t mean though that I can’t wear the swimsuit, even if I don’t swim, though.

I run a travel & learning adventure program for girls 11-14 and all activities take place in waterfront locations. My outreach is with girls of color. (See http://OBGAdventureCamps.com) While the article has a tiny amount of truth to it, there are tons of us (with and without chemically processed hair) that swim regularly. The article’s author is 19 years old and it seems like she is speaking from her own personal experience/perspective and simply didn’t report the other side of the coin. Not reporting both sides seems to be a common error of many writers.
My staff of 2 and I (all swimmers) took 10 girls to the US Virgin Islands this past April and even the sailboat captain on one of our excursions told me she knew for a fact that people of African descent naturally have trouble swimming. I told her that her information was based on an old myth from an old (and inaccurate) report called The Negro and Learning to Swim. Even with a boat load of Brown Girls jumping off of the boat into the water and a staff member that is a triathlete and water aerobics instructor, the captain was committed to her position.
There are many sides to this OLD issue of Blacks and swimming. This is just one.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/choc68leggz/ choc68leggz

Wow at all the onesided assbackwards comments. Im a beautiful black woman, with natural hair, no chemicals, and I am a 100% avid swimmer. Who in their right mind believes all the negative articles about what black women do or dont do? Geez some peeps are so narrow minded its pathetic. Swimming has always been apart of my life and my children. And for the record, EVERYONE gets darker during the summer months, whether they swim or not. Swimming is the perfect full body exercise and it does wonders for strength training. For those humans who commented about the effect chlorine does to womens hair, that has chemicals, YES, Chlorine does strip the perm out, and NO those chemicals in the perms does nothing in chlorine, take some science lessons and know what you font. Remember, get your facts straight before you attempt to discredit ones lifestyle, and make yourself look more ignorant!

This is so true! I went to the pool when I was in the 4th or 5th grade and the chlorine got in my hair and it made it come out. I never went back into a pool that had chlorine in it again. It really damages African American hair..

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Chocolate_Gul/ Chocolate_Gul

Dont blame the article, blame the people that are going psycho cussin & stuff over this subject. Just ignore the dummies.

Anyway, I don’t really mind about getting my hair wet while swimming. I just don’t want to wash it every time I go swimming! Can you say lazy!? I would probably go swimming every day if it wasn’t for that. My hair has never came out or broke off because of chlorine.

yeah yeah yeah.. y cant be people just get along on BP…well my reason for not swimming most of the times is because i drown last time so its a fear..and i told myself never again and like aries spears the comedian said once we know how to heat the water up nothing can stop us now…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Ree_ality/ Ree_ality

I can only speak for myself when I say I love swimming. I have not had a perm for about 6 years and even when I had one I went swimming. I’m just disappointed that a lot of the black men on here has such negative things to say about black women. I see many black men here on Black Planet that will only talk to white women, by the way not all white people can swim or other races for that matter. If your black chances are your mother and sister and aunts and grandmother are too. It’s one thing to like different races, but to dislike your own is sad. Get it together!!!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/MS_SC69_1/ MS_SC69_1

Some black women wear weave, so I am guessing the dont want the glue to come out. I myself dont wear weave, my hair is done weekly so I dont care if it gets wet.

SORRY ASS BLACK WOMEN CAN’T ENJOY LIFE BECAUSE IT’S ALL ABOUT THEIR FAKE ASS HAIR THATS THE PROBLEM WHEN U R FAKE THESES W***ES KNOW THEY HAVE A PERM KEEPING THEIR HAIR STR8 LOOKING SO THEY DON’T WANT TO MESS IT UP WHILE THE WHITE WOMEN HOP IN THE POOL AND ENTERTAIN US BROTHERS AT WILL THATS WHY NO ONE WANTS TO DEAL WITH A BLACK ASS WOMEN THEY ARE NO FUN JUST ALL ABOUT HOW THEY ARE PERCEIVED WHEN IT COME TO LOOKS I KNOW I WILL NEVER ASK ANOTHER BLACK ASS WOMEN TO A POOL PARTY BECAUSE THE POOL WOULD BE EMTRY THEY SIT NEAR IT NOT IN IT.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/odoggz/ odoggz

That’s at the pool. What about the shower, the river, the beach? I’ve had many black women not want to get wet in those environments either, so I just go SWIMMING without them, snorkeling, jet skiing, etc. Those obsessed with hair act like this with any water source.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/NoWeaveClique/ NoWeaveClique

Here we go again…another article that stereotypes black women and being anti-waterbabies. This is complete BS. I am of 2 parents who come from the West Indies and hence, the very same thing that “we” black women are afraid of is what surrounds these islands in the Caribbean. Every woman has their choice to go swimming or do water-related activities but if there are some women who want to avoid the work of getting their hair back to a normal state after being in the water, then that’s them. I had a relaxer for 7 years and my hair has always been mid-back length. I went swimming and managed to survive growing it out of that relaxer. The chlorine or salt if you are at the beach, only damages your hair IF you do not wash your hair and condition it as you usually do afterwards. Otherwise, the water does no damage. If your hair breaks or falls out, that’s on the person for not taking care of their hair. If one is so worried about that, put it in braids or wear a swimming cap. You know how many girls I saw do that when I was in Trinidad this year? Ok, not much effort there and I knew they were foreigners like myself. How about this for an idea? Try going natural…no chemicals. For me, it works cuz’ whenever it rains, I wet my hair and allow it to dry into it’s natural curly state with mousse/wrapping lotion or black gel…and when it’s a sunny day, I straighten it with a flat iron. Just a thought…

SOME OF THE MEN WHO PUT DOWN BLACK FEMALES & WHAT THEY DO TO THEIR HAIR, IF U HAVE A DAUGHTER OR GET ANY IN THE FUTURE, TAKE OVER MANAGING HER HAIR INSTEAD OF HER MOTHER DOING IT & THEN MAYBE YOULL UNDERSTAND WHERE A BLACK FEMALE IS COMING FROM,,,AND DONT JUST PUT IT IN A BIG PUFF EITHER,,LOL,,THAT AINT GONNA WORK.
AND FOR ANYONE WHO DOES GET IN SWIMMING POOLS,,,ITS ALWAYS GOOD TO WET UR HAIR B4 U GET IN, CUZ U DONT WANT THE FIRST THING UR HAIR TO SOAK UP TO BE CHLORINE! BUT I WOULD JUST GO WITH A CAP LIKE SWIMMERS DO, U MIGHT LOOK LIKE A LAME, BUT YOULL BE A LAME WITH NICE HAIR AFTER THE CAP IS OFF,,,LMAO!!

Wow, it kills me how people continue to pretend that Black women don’t like to do various forms of exercise, due to their hair. I work in the gym, and Black women represent the smallest demographic of gym memberships. And those sisters that are in the gym, don’t have elaborate hairstyles.

Stop pretending like this isn’t an issue. There’s an epidemic of sisters that would rather buy fake hair and nails to cover up their issues, rather than take care of themselves internally and externally.

If you want us (men) to love you, you have to first love yourself. Like another commenter said, I would rather check for a sister with a basic hairstyle, but takes care of herself, than a sister with all the bells and whistles, but looks like she needs to get in the gym.

@ Old_School and bereal34 if the black woman didn’t put all that effort into “looking good” yal black azzes would probably be b1tching. There isn’t just negative articles about black women. • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-You should know that its alot of black women who can swim and its alot of white people who can’t swim either. Yet you want hear of them in the media put down only the black(WOMEN)race. I don’t have a problem in getting my hair wet…I have to wash it. Like ALOT of black women we have different reason in not getting in the pool or sea/ocean water. The public pools are nasty and the ocean and sea water is not safe as you can read the jellyfish is just for starters now ad sharks, snakes, gators, etc to the list. Only a fool would go in the ocean and sea and a dummy to jump in a public pool…putting your life at risk in 1 and taking in someone else piss in the other. I can swim yet you want see me in NONE of the places I just named and it has nothing to do with my DAMN HAIR. Now if you come by my house you will see me swim when im at home.

@kraycarr-So tell me why some black men don’t swim? Could it be that you don’t want your dicks to SHRINK up,your hair to mess up or is it you just don’t know how?

@SAMURA17ASSASIN-No what would kill you is NOT KNOWING THE TRUTH. You claim black women need to(Stop pretending like this isn’t an issue)Its not for us only for some of you black boys who jump on the white media news and net and run with everything they hear and read…we are not PRETENDING ITS CALLED BEING SAFE. You claim the(Black women represent the smallest demographic of gym memberships. And those sisters that are in the gym, don’t have elaborate hairstyles.)well damn how many black men/boys do you see in the gym? Im sure if you compare ya’ll to the white race in that area you would be just like the black women less and talked sh!t about with the title WHY MANY AFRICAN/BLACK MEN WON’T GO SWIMMING? What piss me off is boys like you think its true. While your a$$ is looking down on the black woman and ASUMING black women need to stop pretending and stop buying fake hair and nails to cover up their issues. I would like to see if you know what the issuse really is? I want hold my breathe…your sounding like a true slave mind n!gger. Who couldn’t handle the truth if it hit you in the face. I bet your 1 of those n!ggers who will smile and greet a white b!tch with fake nails, hair, and be fat as f**k yet you will love it. So shut your confused a$$ up and worry about why black boys like you hate on black women,so quick to prejudge them and asume sh!t?(JMO)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Old_School/ Old_School

    @CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

There are certain dangers when people swim in the ocean, but no one would swim in the ocean at all if it was as dangerous as you make it out to be. Jellyfish are practically harmless, and sharks can be found in only certain regions. Also, alligators and snakes are usually found in swamps, not in the ocean, you have no reason to fear them unless you’re planning on swimming in a swamp. Some public pools may be unsanitary but not all. Public pools have chlorine in their water to kill bacteria. Your fears and concerns are valid but blown out of proportion just a bit.

    @goodman8282

I was referring to the articles on Blackplanet, not in the general news. Perhaps I should’ve used a different set of words. I’ve never disrespected you, so please don’t disrespect me. There are black women who don’t put a lot of time and effort into “looking good” and still wouldn’t get into the water.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@bereal34-I thought they freed all the slaves lol I guess you didn’t hear nor read that part. While your still living in the slave man mind and style let me clear the air Come closer closer closer now have someone help your black a$$ read this boy(NOT ALL BLACK WOMEN WEAR WEAVE NOR NAILS AND WE LOVE THE WATER JUST IN OUR OWN BACKYARD THE MOST WHERE ITS SAFE AND CLEAN.) Your the type of n!gger who will let a white b!tch piss and sh!t in your mouth then f**k a white b!tch in her a$$ and let her suck your dick and your boys then kiss her in the mouth smile and ask her to marry you? Question-Do you feel this way about your mama, sister, aunt, and grandma? Do they swim or they b!tches and hoes? Why are some black men mind-set like that of massa wife and daughter? They hate on black women for no real reason. Get yourself right before you go asuming dumbsh!t.(JMOARTY)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-I understand that rather than state a true reason the media grab hold to bullsh!t and act as if black women are the only ones who don’t swim nor don’t want to get their hair wet. Its not because of a perm because when you do swim or get your hair wet and you got a perm and its done right it will in fact make your hair straight while your in the water and out. Point is not all white people swim and some of them don’t want to mess their hair up either and some black men don’t swim. So why was this another low-blow to the black women? Instead of asking the question why some women and men don’t like to swim? And not ad a race to it. Thats like saying white people can play better basketball, football, and run track than black people and we know this is NOT true just like this bullsh!t reason why some black women don’t swim.(JMOARTY)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Old_School/ Old_School

    @CAROLINAGIRLSRDBEST

Well, maybe the author of this forum is using black women as an example because it seems like black women (out of all the groups of people) make the biggest fuss over getting in the water. I’m glad that you haven’t attacked me verbally like “Goodman8282,” but I did feel that you were a little vulgar with “Bereal34.” I don’t necessarily agree with his statements which were a little harsh, but you didn’t have to be so graphic! That’s nasty! Wouldn’t you agree?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-I forgot to state all those things you claim is only in a swamp you have been told wrong. They are in all those places I named and to keep from looseing any money is kept on he down low. Sharks attack people in water that you wouldn’t believe a shark would be in same as a gator and snake. And all public pool are nasty nomatter how much you or the owner claim its clean. People spit, piss, and blow their nose in the water on top of having sex. You might can cut back on the sex and pissing in the pool but,all the rest is still there and its nasty to me.(JMOARTY)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-No I don’t…it serve him well. Anybody who down grade the black woman should be more than talked about he need his a$$ kicked. He played pu$$ie and getting fu(ked. And keep in mind that when you put all in black women or state black women with no names it bring the term in speaking of every black woman including yours in your family. So why would you show any concern toward a boy who speak so freely about black women? I didn’t see the need in his computer yelling black women(b!tches and wh0res.)Yet if he had stated in away like you did with no disrespect…then I would not have came at him the way I did you. You feel me?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/missstrings43/ missstrings43

And I know this doesn’t pertain to the article but,….the men STILL call me high maintenance…

Whew! Too funny..just too too funny…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Old_School/ Old_School

    @CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

I don’t mean any disrespect, but I don’t know where you get your information. I’ve never heard of sharks attacking people in swamps, and snakes actually try to avoid people in general. Contrary to what you may believe, shark attacks are actually rare. The problem’s that the media blows shark attacks out of proportion. You and I are much more likely to die in an automobile accident than to get attacked by a shark, but that doesn’t mean that we should stop driving. You have your own personal reasons as to why you don’t like going to the beaches or the public pools, but you shouldn’t call people who choose to go to these places dummies. I’m quite certain that most people who go to those places are safety conscience. If I’m not mistaken, the conduct at public pools is heavily monitored by the lifeguards as well as other staff members, so you must be talking about a ghetto pool. Yes, Bereal34 was disrespectful and could’ve expressed himself a little better.

I just do not know how to swim.

Have had several lessons…and learning to float in NINE feet of water as the FIRST lesson was not my cup of tea. After sputtering (and yeah, I cried! I was scared as hell.) my premise REMAINS “H to the E to the L’s with the double-hockey sticks!

    No! Bye-bye…lol!

@Old_School-I didn’t state sharks was in swamp water-I said, you can fine gators in water where sharks are seen at…and my friends daughter is 5mths pregnant from going to the public pool and having sex in the water and trust me its not a ghetto pool. And when I first moved to FL and went to the beach it was a snake on the beach this wasn’t no he say she say I saw it with my own eyes. Just like I saw sharks and gators here too. Its the owners of the places who keep things down-low to make money rather than tell the truth. Thats why so many people get attacked by these things and some killed because they lie and say its safe until something bad happen. You can’t say our chances of dying are more likely in a car accident when I have my eyes open for any and everything. Yet when your in the water those things come from nowhere and attack…so you don’t have no chance in moving out the way or stopping like you do in a car. So my chances would be slim to none on them both. As for understanding you I do and you didn’t disrespect me. I just hope you got the full understanding that many black women have our reasons for not swimming in sea/ocean and pool water and its not our hair.

You must take your region into consideration. The things to which you’re referring don’t usually happen in the mid-Atlantic region. Florida is a different story. The Florida coast, the Pacific coast, and the Hawaiian coast are known for shark attacks. I think that you’ve misunderstood me. Statistically, we’re more likely to be injured or killed in an automobile accident than being attacked by a shark. Why should those “reasons” be limited to black women only?

Shyt that’s a lie! I always been into swimming, be it the pool or beach. I don’t give a damn about holding on to a hairstyle.

By the way, please be careful about how you type your sentences because it definitely sounded like you said that sharks were found in swamps. It’s just a suggestion.

You will neva see a fake white black women in the water, she too busy looking fake white scares to go back to nappy…. We love our women of color natural. Women of color look beter with some curl, White people know that black women hates herself and are jealous of white women’s hair, Remember white people laughing at you not with you. All who’s guilty raise your hotcombs, I mean your wigs, I mean your hands… Stop copying other races then call yourself “pretty” no you not you just fake white. Natural women of color are more fun, they not always checkin their fake white look in the mirror. Find your own idenitity and leave the fake white shyt alone, Thats why Naomi is losing her hair. I bet if I told you that cat is in style you would wear your cat on top of your head to da club thinking you is cute. silly black women. There is only 1 white women stop pretending you can be like her. fake cracks

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/supernovaca/ supernovaca

I really wish these idiots stop saying what black women will do and don’t do. I’m a black woman and I grew up swimming I don’t know what you ass -oles are talking about not all races swim… Its simple some people swim and some people don’t some people are just naturally scared of swimmng pools or large amounts of water especially if they weren’t raised around swimming pools or didn’t take swimming lessons every summer like the kids in my neighborhood did so stop stereo typing its very upsetting to hear blanket statements….. you can’t speak for every black woman in the world dummy

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-I understood you and as you read in the same report FL,both South and North Carolina people have been attacked/killed by sharks and some are left untold because if people really knew the danger of being in water like that they would not swim and to keep money in the owners pocket they will keep things on the down-low. Trust me…I wouldn’t speak of these things if I didn’t know for a fact it happen and still do. All im saying is that many women both black and white other race of women too…will not swim because of the same reason a black woman want and its not ONLY because of our hair…thats the point im trying to make. On top of the fact im sick of the net posting all bad things and putting blame on the black(WOMAN)race.
Question-How would you feel if everytime you open up the net and everything posted is downing only black men? Keep in mind this is a black net that suppose to help and uplift the black race.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@mrbluesays-Don’t you hate the white women who do the same thing and they hate the black woman always have and always will? From back in the day when the white man would rather have sex/raped the black woman then go home to his wife. Honey I don’t know who told you black women was jealous of any other race of women…muchless hate ourself. Im here to tell you WE ARE NOT. Its sad you feel that way because truth be told you got white women who hate themself more than any other race of women and will change their looks to fit in the black womans world from her skin,a$$,tits, down to her talk and style of dress copying a black woman. Yes SOME black women wear weave and so do white women. Yes SOME black women wear fake nails and so do white women. Yet should you and other black boys, and the net throw stones at ONLY the black women as if blacks are the ONLY ones who do? Why is that?(JMOARTY)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Mb2dx/ Mb2dx

@/mrbluesays/ son you a f**king idiot! Nuff! There’s enough women of diffrent races copyig each other, white woman want to be black and vice versa! You ignorant as they come!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Old_School/ Old_School

    @CAROLINAGIRLSRDBEST

Yes, I’ve read the report too, but the point that I’m trying to make is that shark attacks are still extremely rare despite the fact that they might be underreported. People can still enjoy the water and be safe at the same time. Please read the report again.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/twelvetwelve/ twelvetwelve

I hate straightened hair. If I want a woman with noodle strand hair I’d date somebody who grows it naturally. Keep trying to look like white girls you’ll lose your man to one.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-I read everything along with other reports and talked to people who know for a fact and witness the things we are speaking of…its just not reported to the public. It happen alot more often than you are lead to believe. So why jump in the water if you don’t know whats right there waiting to kill you? You only got 1 life and your body parts/life are not worth loosing all because you want to be like Mike and just do it. Don’t get me wrong im NOT saying don’t go swimming…however im saying WHY (I)along with MANY other BLACK WOMAN don’t go swimming and its NOT because of our HAIR…its other reason as well and we ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES CONCERN OVER HAIR and our life. Thats what im saying so know that I understand you. Yet you missing my point YES some blacks(BOTH MEN AND WOMEN) don’t swim/nor do they know how YET you got the same thing in the WHITE RACE as well as the other race of women/men. Yet you want hear the net report nor ask the lame a$$ question they do when it come to the white race of people nor will they report the real truth on things dealing with the black race. Just look at the question they ask and the reports they post up. Now ask yourself if its painting a picture to uplift us or down us?

I’ve been done with the hair subject ever since you’ve brought up the shark attacks. You have the report, so you can choose to accept it or not. Have you always had this attitude towards swimming in the ocean?

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nonbaglady/ nonbaglady

    We don’t swim? Really? Hmmm . . . interesting . . .

My entire family swims. Both my brother and nephew were lifeguards when they were young. You really can’t stereotype an entire race like that.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/nonbaglady/ nonbaglady

As far as ocean swimming . . . here in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the ocean has one of the highest concentrations of Great White Sharks outside of South Africa? I’ll pass, LOL!

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@Old_School-I agree we both was threw with the hair yet somehow you missed the point when you I gave my reason on both. And I agree again you can choose to accept it or not…its your choice. To answer your question no I have not…I used to love the ocean and going fishing was something fun and it relax your mind. All those things change when you see things you think shouldn’t happen nor suppose to be there. So by all means you swim all you want in whatever water you want to thats your choice and right to do so…no hard feelings oook booboo. :)

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/Old_School/ Old_School

This is bullshyt and racially stereotypical… Besides have the writers of this article ever heard of swimming/shower caps to cover hair? They obviously haven’t…

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/warmheart4u/ warmheart4u

I get so freaking pissed with some of the most ignorant statements that are left by stupid a s s black women hating men. Yes, chlorine is detrimental to our hair when it is chemically processed, but almost all of the black women I know swim, except for those who don’t know how. I would love to go natural, but I would like to loose about 25 pounds before I go that route again.

I also hate when stupid folk always talk about how black women don’t exercise cause of our hair. Well you know what, that salt in sweat is detrimental to processed hair too. I work out 5 DAYS A WEEK and sometimes 7 days, if I have the time. I LOVE working out, and will forgo dryer and somewhat damaged hair for a fit and healthy body. Believe it or not, there are quite a few beautiful black sisters that work out on a regular at the gym I attend as well. The ones with natural hair are cool, but the other sisters with processed hair complain about their hair not being as healthy, but they too are opting for a better body image and health.

I live in the “shark bite capital of the world” (Daytona/New Symrna Beach)and your shark excuses are silly ans simply not true. The fact is Blacks women simply don’t wanna get their fake azz hair wet. I have been to pool parties whereas female getting their hair wet is akin to throwing holy water on a vampire. Which makes me wonder why the heck did they come to a pool party? Mostly it’s because Black females are image conscious and don’t wanna be seen in revealing attire. That’s why when I do see Blacks on the beach, the females are wearing a big t-shirt over their ample guts and Black guys are darn near fully dressed. Ironically,NONE of them actually swim. Not so much as an actual “stereotype” as it is truth.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST/ CAROLINAGIRLSRDABEST

@AfricanSpeech-I agree with you and I don’t believe they have either.

@geode07-KML at your comment is that gut thing/damn near fully dressed and none swimming including you?(You are black after all.)

@Old_School-Even though I can swim just know your not the only one who can not swim and I want come up with any excuses as to why you can’t nor will I bash you nor give you a title…like Newsone done us.
