The View co-host, Sherri Shepherd, became extremely emotional when discussing a controversial Texas law that requires women to have sonograms before obtaining an abortion, reports The Huffington Post.

In addition to the sonogram, the mandate requires that doctors show women sonogram images, play fetal heartbeats and describe features of the fetus.

Though Joy Behar called it “totalitarian,” conservative Elisabeth Hasselbeck said that it was just common medical sense that should be required of all procedures, comparing the new law to being informed about a cyst or kidney surgery.

“You would never go through any medical procedure like that…without looking at the scientific evidence,” Hasselbeck said. “Why you would ask for an X-ray for those things but not in this case?”

Barbara Walters claimed that the law is is unfair to women who may already feel a tremendous amount of fear and guilt when considering the procedure; Whoopi Goldberg agreed, arguing that the reasons for abortion range from women who do not want children to those who cannot afford them.

At that point, Shepherd interjected to point out the hypocrisy of conservative politicians who oppose welfare, birth control and make it a talking point to vilify Planned Parenthood at every opportunity, while simultaneously aggressively opposing abortion and casting negative judgment on women who “have to many babies” that they can’t afford:

“We stop at the picket signs and we don’t help you past that!” an emotional Shepherd said.. “I’m speaking as a girl who had a lot of abortions and I swear to God, if they had shown me a picture of the fetus… I would have put my child in a lot of situations that wouldn’t have been good because I didn’t have the mental capacity to deal with having a child.”
