Obama Addresses Black Unemployment at Press Conference
During his press conference last night, Barack Obama took a question from Andre Showell of BET.
Showell asked about African American Unemployment:
As the entire nation tries to climb out of this deep recession, in communities of color, the circumstances are far worse, the black unemployment rate, as you know, is in the double digits. And in New York City, for example, the black unemployment rate for men is near 50 percent. My question to you tonight is: given this unique and desperate circumstance, what specific policies can you point to that will target these communities and what’s the timetable for us to see tangible results?
Obama responded by saying that a number of his measures were targeted to help all Americans and that minorities would also benefit from these measures.
When we put in place additional dollars for community health centers to ensure that people are still getting the help that they need, or we expand health insurance to millions more children through the Children’s Health Insurance Program, again, those probably disproportionately impact African-American and Latino families simply because they’re the ones who are most vulnerable. They have got higher rates of uninsured in their communities.
So my general approach is that if the economy is strong, that will lift all boats as long as it is also supported by, for example, strategies around college affordability and job training, tax cuts for working families as opposed to the wealthiest that level the playing field and ensure bottom-up economic growth.
And I’m confident that that will help the African-American community live out the American dream at the same time that it’s helping communities all across the country.”

And to the Realest, you’re right. Whatever happens happens. Like for example when you sit on your ass, criticize the president and bring negative energy to a site rather than offer solutions or at least suggestions then that’s exactly what happens and nothing will change.
What the f**k?! Of course he dodged the question he’s a politician. But what the f**k do you want him to do?! When affirmative action was created (which helps latinos, blacks, and WHITE WOMEN!) white people were outraged (and still are!) when welfare was introduced (which actually hurt us more than it helped us) white people were even more furious, claiming all we do is ask for handouts. Can you imagine how much of a villain he would be if he designed programs to help black people?! Especially when white people are struggling so much harder than they have in their lifetimes (most of them anyway)!
Stop talking s**t about the president for doing what a president is supposed to do (Keep his country stable and make executive decisions that benefit the most citizens possible)
If black people ought to be mad at any black people it should be the black entrepreneurs for not producing more and hiring only black workers like Asians and whites do. Or mad at themselves for supporting all this bulls**t material stuff that they won’t see a penny off of instead of investing in the struggling black entrepreneur from their community that they hate on rather than help out! Get real! Obama is not the problem!

This man is the Prez of the United States, has an agenda to follow and cant do everything. You cant just sit back and think, ” oh since we got a black prez he gon help us”. He has to help everyone, no matter race or skin color. If you unemployed, like me for instance, keep it moving. Keep job searching and applying and something will come up. To sit back and wait on someone to help you is only gonna hurt yourself.

I too think black people should stop that whole “My President is Black” thing”. Barack Obama is not a “BLACK MANS” President but he is the UNITED STATES PRESIDENT. I dont feel as though Obama is going to single handidly change the black community. Its not Obama’s duty to change the black community its the black community who needs to cease the “Stop Snitchin” campaign, need to stop partaking in so many murders in our country, needs to stop sagging their pants around their thighs, needs to stop going to prison in big numbers, needs to stop having unwed births at 16 and 17 when you cant afford and needs to stay in school. Blacks lag behind whites not because of racism and discrmination like so many blacks claim but its because they arent motivated to live the American dream they are only motivated in fast money and cheap sex which leads to high AIDS rates and unwanted pregnancies. I feel that Obama ducked that question as well. Let’s be real, health resources, education all boils down to employement because with funding and income, you can supply health care and education resources, so let’s not forget that. I still say give Obama a chance, but how can we fix our own problems when not given the tools to do so. We not asking Obama to fiz all our problems, but to level the playing field so African Americans can receive the same opportunities as our white counterparts. Especially those with college degrees who work hard to earn them, and then we hear from employers, we are over qualified. All black needs employment and even those who didn’t go to college, job training is provided, and many of us have skills as well…Black people, don’t keep talking about we need to do for ourselves, the President is suppose to provide resources and solutions, not sit back and let the citizens do the work, that’s not a President then.

yes, he should advocate for us in ways… and he’s not wrong in what he said. his platforms include not only measures to make a more active and accountable government, BUT also for US ALL to do our own parts. he addressed it well in saying that he’s taking measures to aid communities to AID THEMSELVES! take charge of your own communities and what goes on in them. and where there are holes, fill them!
you can’t just go mr president, fix this for us/me and then sit back like okay, no worries, Obama got it… and our problems are a lot bigger than simple unemployment. more aid in literacy and education most likely would help toooooooooo!!!! as well as healthcare
