OPINION: Black Voters Should View Gay Marriage As A Civil Rights Issue

From The Root:

This week the voters in the state of Maine will go to the polls to decide on a gay marriage referendum that is widely considered a test case for the rest of the nation. This vote is so important that Californians who successfully organized in support of Proposition 8, and thus outlawed gay marriage there, have moved wast. Groups dedicated to the defeat of gay marriage have set up camp in Maine to deny consenting adults the right to legally wed.

This is a national scandal, but it moves the issue to the forefront again and gives the African-American community a chance to reaffirm its support for equal rights by supporting gay marriage. Black communities have a long, sad history of homophobia which has led many black people to oppose same-sex marriage, sometimes on religious or moral grounds. But after having served as the moral conscience of the nation during the long struggle for justice and equal rights in the last century, black Americans cannot be absent from, or take the wrong side in, this latest struggle for basic human rights.

I do believe that when the comparison is made, it is not to the civil rights struggle we and our ancestors endured, it is made to a violation of rights as a human being. (not gay, btw) The idea is the civil rights of a person, not the civil rights of a people.

The point is that ANY time one person’s personal opinion prohibits another from doing something that is neither harmful to himself or others, it is a violation of their individual civil rights. The fact that your views are one way or the other on gay lifestyles, and gay marriages should not impact on whether two people can share the same pros and cons of a legal marriage. People are people period. And none of you, when it all boils down, has anything to say about the immortal soul of anyone but yourself.

I would really like to meet the person who set this entire gay rights equal to civil rights struggle. Only an ignorant person would agree to that perception. There is no way in he*ll that the right to marry in the SAME SEX is equal to a man being lynched JUST because of his skin color…There is no way that two people of the same sex being together is equal to little black children being bombed in a CHURCH, or not being allowed to attend school JUST because of skin color. The LGBT community needs to back off of refering to the two ’struggles’ as the same..its very offensive to those of us who have felt the heat of racism, OR like myself just old enough to remember growing up in ALABAMA and listening to as well as watching certain things happen to my grandparents/family members period, just because of our skin tones…

I agree with everyone. It goes against the natural law of the land. But what messed up and scary. At the rate of medical technology, such as cloning and so forth, it might only be a matter of time before people can procreate either asexual or through homosexuality. The last time I checked, I can tell a black, asian, white or whatever person they are just by looking at them. Alot of gays, I can assume they are by looks, but it is not 100%. Besides it is a slap in the face comparing this to civil rights. And it is just down right nasty.

    YOU CANNOT COMPARE THE TWO.
LIKE THE BROTHER NAHLII SAID, IT GOES AGAINST THE LAWS OF NATURE.
WE CONSIDER OURSELVES TO BE THE SMARTEST MAMMALS ON THE PLANET BUT WE DO WHAT MOST ANIMALS WON`T AND THAT`S MATE WITH THE SAME SEX.
IF GAY PEOPLE THINK THAT WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS RIGHT THEN TRY PUTTIN 200 ON A ISLAND FOR 100 YEARS.AFTER THE 90TH YEAR RETURN TO THAT SAME ISLAND AND SEE HOW MUCH THE POPULATION HAS GROWN.

In all honesty, one must look to the LAWS of nature (i.e. the universal laws of the ONE Whom create the LAWS as He Wills and enforce them throughout the universe) for the Absolute Truth and God never changes His Laws. I sware to you, until the heavens and the earth passes not one jot in the Law shall change until everything is complete. Now, if everyone was to accept homosexuality is normal human behavior and this behaviour became the law of the land what would become of our species? The pen has stopped writing and the ink has dried in regard to the cosmic Laws of nature so no I would not support gay marriage, however, I could care less what people choose to do behind closed doors. Never the less, it would be unconstitutional to not allow gay people to enter into a binding agreement, just do not strive to equate same sex marriage as equal to that of a man and a woman. This is my opinion based on the Absolute Truth.

What civil right are they missing? Gay people can can get married just like anyone else. No one has the right to marry same sex. Sounds like equality to me.

Even the most liberal state of all, CA shot this shyt down.

I’m offrnded that because I’m black I should support gay marriage. Are you f**king kidding me!? I choose not to support it because 1) It’s a disgusting and dangerous lifestyle, and 2) God tells us it’s an abomination! As if there weren’t enough good blackmen, and good blackwomen for eachother now you have to worry about the last good examples from each being snatched up by fags, and dykes sheesh! I don’t give a s**t what these degenerates do in their own homes, but I’ll never support or vote for the creeps to get married, now you weirdos enjoy that lake of fire!
