We often see the images of starving children and impoverished families flashing across our TV sets. Many times, they are huddled in massive groups waiting for food handouts, safe housing or any other basic necessity. Whether it’s following a devastating natural disaster, civil unrest or sheer poverty, the scenes of chaos remain imprinted in our minds despite the fact that they are occurring in distant lands.

Until recently, most of us here in the United States remained lucky enough to never even fathom such desperation. But last week, when some 30,000 people near Atlanta, GA braved the tumultuous heat for hours just for a slim shot at housing relief, the rest of the nation watched on in horror as these acts of despondency occurred right in our own backyard. And just like all moments of human despair and misery, just a few minutes of that footage highlighted grave challenges that many wish would be swept under a rug somewhere.

The city of Atlanta is often referred to as the city of paradoxes. Comprised of the fastest growing millionaire population, it simultaneously has one of the highest child poverty rates in the country. Last week, just outside Atlanta in East Point, GA, these 30,000 folks gathered – many of them nights before – just to receive an application to be placed on a waiting list for Section 8 housing. The East Point Housing Authority currently has 455 vouchers that are all being utilized, so everyone who showed up last week can only hope to get on this list for a chance at affordable housing, and many will remain on the list for years.

The massive explosion of folks left over 60 in need of medical attention, and 20 transported to a hospital – including a baby who went in to seizure because of the excessive heat. There was yelling, screaming, pushing, cursing and chaos as the throng of folks fought to merely garner an application. And in order to receive these section 8 vouchers, a family must not make more than 50% of the areas’ median income, which stands at just around $31,847. In the end, about 75% of the housing vouchers will go to those who make less $9,500 a year.

Text continues after Atlanta gallery:

Now, let’s put this in perspective. Thousands convene in the extreme heat and fight their way to receive an application for just a chance at survival. This wasn’t a group of people fighting over mundane things, or even attempting to get a shot at the American dream. These were mothers, fathers and families who have fallen on hard times and make barely enough money to put food on the table.

How can we sit by idly and watch such catastrophic events take place? When Black unemployment rates are more than double the national average in many areas, how can we be complacent? When foreclosures have left our families homeless, how can we not speak up? When scenes of utter despair like East Point play out on our TV screens, how can we not do something? When the dream for freedom, equality, opportunity and advancement is yet to be fully realized, how can we not take a stand?

Join the National Action Network on August 28th in Washington, DC. as we RECLAIM THE DREAM that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned nearly 47 years ago. Enough is enough. We can no longer choose to ignore the harsh realities right before our eyes – for the tragic scenes like East Point, GA are now etched in our minds.

Join us on the 28th as we seek sustainable solutions to our housing crisis, economic woes and unemployment epidemic. Stand with us as we march for unity, freedom, justice and humanity.

Free housing for life or go to school, get a skill and a job and provide for yourself. We see the choice those in line have made. Section 8 was meant to be used as a temporary means of housing assistance to give women a chance to go to school get a skill, move out and provide for themselves. It’s actually used as a permanent source of housing FOR LIFE. And then we wonder why the many in the community are unmotivated.

Boy my people trip me out sometime. We always want to treat a symptoms but not never the root cause. People are wondering what’s wrong with black people. Why is there so much, crime, poverty, foreclosures, drop outs, teen pregnancies ect. ect. ect. There anit nothing wrong with black people. We are trying to accomplish something that has never been done in the history of civilization. Establishing a productive community without men in the home. The black community has a 70% illegitimacy rate. What’s wrong is your leaders are lying to you all and to many black people have bought into it.

Authoritative – The first principle is the man is the head of the household. He is in the home. You can not have a productive community, city nor country without men in the home. People want more programs, more police, more schools, more, more, more. However, None of those social problems will ever be solved until that first principle is addressed and solved. At some point, we will recognize this. Illegitimacy has to be de-incentivize. You have single unemployed women who are better off financially with children than without. That is crazy.
I’m not blaming this all on the women. The blame has to be shared by all. But the fact of the matter is, a man can’t get pregnant. Treating the symptom is much easier than treating the root cause. Treating the root cause is painful and difficult.

RECLAIMING THE WHAT? FREEBEE’S? ENTITLEMENT? REWARD FOR MAKING BAD CHOICES CONSISTANTLY? EVERY PERSON I KNOW OF ON SECTION-8 IS USING VOUCHERS PASSED DOWN AT LEAST 3 GENERATIONS! FROM GREAT-GRANDMA TO GRANDMA TO MOMMY! PEOPLE WHO REALLY NEED THE HELP CAN’T GET IT BECAUSE OF ALL THE FALSFIED RECEIPIENTS WHO LIE(S)(ED) TO CONSISTANTLY BE RE-CERTIFIED! HUD need’s to overhaul the WHOLE Section-8 Program, going back at least 3 decades, investigate all people who’s been on Section-8 under 1 name going back at least 60 years! Young families can’t get housing because you got old great-grandma still using the voucher in which she ONLY apprears when it time for recertification, then great-grandma goes back to where SHE REALLY LIVES! 3 GENERATION’S OF STEALIING GOVERNMENT HOUSING! OH before I forget, “There are People who is the receipients of Section-8, who in turn rent’s the apartment out to others & pocket the rent money, from the folk’s who ARE ACTUALLY OCCUPYING THE UNITS!

Ask yourself after 100′s of years in this Amerikka, why do we suffer and other nations that migrate here mostly do not?Do Asians,Arabs,East Indians ,Hispanic, ask yourself why have we not built up a power base in this nation as they have? They don’t spend their time playing basketball all the time, they don’t murder each other like dogs in the street, they have strong males where the female respects the man,if she does not she is banned from the tribe. We allowed ourselves to be tricked into trying to be a culture we are not, being Amerikkan,a nation of savages that breeds war and death around the globe,a nation that has proved and shown it hatred for Black and poor people,a death culture. The white man exterminated millions, and the killing machine continues on to this very day,and we are its victims.

@stevealex: Our people will always be victims keep in mind that most of us are still handicap or suffer from mental paralysis or dependency . The bad thing about people that try to talk about blacks it seems that don’t know there history. When you talk about robbing the blacks and turning them into dumb deaf and blind you also have to factor a new genetic make up that’s dormanted in most black in America so in reality you will still see more of our people going backwards than growing. The bad thing about our people is that we are chosen to do great things but lack the true understanding on how to get there as a people. Think about this there are many things that’s robbing our true vision the first one was BET now at first BET had shows that focused on growth you had teen summit, Donnie Simpson, Travis smiley and News for African people and it didn’t talk bad about no other culture BET was tune turning the mind than the garbage came out Money took the focus away the true value. Radio was more informative but now a days it’s worst than every the message of most of the rappers is garbage and no different than calling your mother a b@#$! in her face, but it’s okay. (There are many things that shift our focus) Black man and Woman are at each other throat ready to kill each other and literally not caring or thinking that they are the teachers of the youth and the elders or should I say most of the elders just stop fighting not thanking that they are the true wisdom that the most high speaks of when he says “Go to the elders when you are sick and let them prey for you” and ” Listen to the elders for wisdom” the problem with this is our elders been fighting for civil rights for so long that they forgot to teach the youth when they were coming up, so when you look though the eyes of a eagle you will truly see why our people are dyeing a slow death.

Side note: When talking about the problems of black people in America really seat down and research the problem from a historical standpoint and truly you will see all things that’s killing blacks day by day.

“…Stand with us as we march for unity, freedom, justice and humanity…” More useless rhetoric from Uncle Al. Its unbelievable to me that these people cannot find gainful employment making more than 16k a year, which is minimum wage. Even if they had no tangible vocational skills, eg auto mechanic, hair dresser, painter, carpenter, etc; there are PLENTY of retail jobs that pay least 7.75/hr.

Its my opinion that these people do not work by choice and rather sit at home living off govt tit than actually work for a living. We need less vouchers not more. Take off the kid gloves. Like someone else said Section Eight was created to be a TEMPORARY assistance program. Now you have people that live on that sh1t for their entire life.

Welfare needs to be reformed. Enough is enough!

Affordable housing is needed throughout this country. People are not making “livable” wages anymore to afford the housing rates (to include rentals). Corporate greed has led company’s to move middle income jobs overseas where lax labor laws and poor wages are standards. With these jobs gone, it wipes out the middle class. It’s effects are taken hardest by minorities, because many are not privy to the left over top paying white collar jobs (e.g., CEO’s and VP’s).

Therefore, being a volunteer at a homeless shelter, I’ve seen the number of applicants (all races) skyrocket in the past few years. More people in family’s are living together and still working more than one job. Non traditional families are being formed. So, Americans in general do not have the wages to afford the asking price of housing and choosing not to buy period. It’s why the economy is having a hard time recovering – people must buy – but we just do not have the money!

This same news report could have been broadcast from some area such as Utah, Kentucky or West Virgina, etc, but the so called “examples” are always made from the underrepresented people in this nation.

This sh-t is not suppose to be happening in america. It is because of the money being spent outside of america and fu-king immigration. You want to know why people from other countries you mention are doing okay? It is because they take money that is suppose to go to you and give it to immigrants and give it to israel to build settlements and fences. I recently quit my $95,000/yr job because I got sick and tired of my tax dollars going for war, to immigrants who never worked a day in this country; to bailout wall street bankers and insurance companies who rip the people off; to watch people who come to this country from other places get medicaid, home care, public housing, my social security dollars, while my 99 year old grandmother in alabama can’t get no help at home because she ain’t no , fu-king immigrant and she don’t have medicaid. This country is fu-ked-up. It does not care about the american people. I cried the other day when I saw those people in New Orleans caught in Katrina. It took 4 days for this government to get food and water to those people. 4 fu-king days!!!! I didn’t cry when it happened because I was numb. I was so busy working my ass off 16 hour days, that I did not have time to feel. It is only since I stopped working that I have time to feel and see, really see, how really messed up this country is.

First of all i think that section 8 is a complete joke. when you make too much money, they want to remove you from the program. the way they do it is if you make some much per hour they look at the gross not the net. the gross we do not take home it is the net that they need to look at. as a disabled individual i was removed from the program because i bring in too much. i wish i could have taken the section 8 program and went to court on this but one day these rich greedy people will pay for the way they treat the poor and disabled

Excatly! Too bad no one is listening.

Recently for a project for school I went to a daycare center here in GA called Our House where they keep homeless children.

I didn’t know why their parents lost there home and I didn’t judge them because I had no idea why they were in the situation they were in and who am I to judge they? My house might catch fire or some natural disaster might tear down my home and I might end up just like them.

I personally would rather those kids parent file for Section 8 so they can have their own room and feel safe to have a home to go to at the end of the day. Instead of going back to the shelter of back out on the street.

So many heartless people in this world at would rather kick someone when they are down than trying to help them get back on their feet.

  • http://www.blackplanet.com/RadioVoice63/ RadioVoice63

Here are 2 ways to view section 8 housing vouchers, and the black people who apply for them.

The first way is the view the black applicants who apply for section 8 vouchers and whom live in public housing is as lazy, shiftless, ignorant, uneducated, criminal-minded, w**rish, trifling, dirty, disgusting humans. Who keep making babies they can’t care for, and who keep going to jails and prisons like those are their private country clubs. Of whom America should eliminate once and for all, by putting them on naval ships and transporting them to Africa.
Dropping them off with glee, in hopes that they stay in Africa and never come back.

The second way to view the black applicants who apply for section 8 vouchers and whom live in public housing is as hard working; semi-educated(but trying to go higher); morally conscience; concerned about their communities; able to develop a plan to eventually leave section 8 and public housing for good; simply needing temporary assistance with rent, because the income from their jobs is not strong enough to allow them to live in regular housing. These people are good people, who really are working their tails off to do better.

There are many black people I see everyday here in Baltimore, Maryland who are eternally lazy, and who have no intention of ever trying to work for a living. They sit around on these rowhouse steps and project porches throughout the city and cause nothing but chaos and confusion from morning to night. Fighting, cussing, shooting and selling drugs all day and all night long. Forever trying to show just how ugly and stupid they can be. Sadly a very large number of public housing and section 8 residents in this city are exactly as I describe.
(Just drive thru and see for yourself; but don’t slow down, and for God’s sake; don’t stare!)

However I would be be most unfair to conclude that it’s all-inclusive. There are certainly some black people who want the vouchers and who live in public housing, only because their current incomes don’t afford them the luxury to live elsewhere. They seek the vouchers and public housing with temporary motives in mind. They only want help with their rents, until they can do better and earn higher wages. They have solid plans to one day be able to give up their vouchers and their public housing, and manage their rents totally on their own.

What you see in Atlanta is the extreme; being exploited by the media to further cause hatred against blacks by whites and other races who see this misery on television, the internet and in the newspapers. The photo they used for this internet story is an example of this. Now I am sure there were some brothers and sisters among the 30,000 who were having civil discussions, laughing and talking while waiting in the long line.

Yet we see no photo of cordial behavior. Why? Because the media is subliminally putting the image in white people’s minds and other race’s minds, that black people are pathetic; always lining up to get something for nothing. Arguing and fighting even when they are getting a free hand-out from the government. The underlying message is that these people don’t know how to live or act civilized. Think about it.

But that how things are. It is meant for families whom incomes are very low. It isnt meant to be used for the rest of their lives. Yes times are rough but they are rough for 25 years? It is a disgrace that over 30,000 applicants were out there. That still doesn’t include the ones that is currently on the program. As for the “we have to help one another” No one will get themselves out of the hole unless they help themselves. The time it takes when one “apply” and actually get on the waiting list takes years. Not 1 2 or 3, it is dayum near 5. That time frame could be utilized to gain education or skill sets to improve one self. That what “adulthood” is.

AL SHARPTON IS A FBI SNITCH

Al Sharpton is showbiz — a former boy preacher, turned reckless demagogue, turning (he hopes) into an elder statesman of Black America. He has always loved the limelight and hung out with Al Sharpton is showbiz — a former boy preacher, turned reckless demagogue, turning (he hopes) into an elder statesman of Black America. He has always loved the limelight and hung out with celebrities such as Mahalia Jackson, James Brown, Michael Jackson and Don King. Say what you want about him, he’s certainly entertaining.
He grew up in a prosperous, suburban family (his dad was a landlord and businessman) and was a child prodigy as a preacher. By age 7, he was touring with gospel great Mahalia Jackson and Bishop F.D. Washington, the renowned Pentacostal minister of Brooklyn’s Washington Temple Church of God in Christ as “the Wonder Boy Preacher.”

At age 10, however, his parents divorced due to an affair his dad had with Sharpton’s half-sister (ie his dad’s step-daughter.) Sharpton’s mother was forced to go on welfare, and at one point they went without electricity for 6 months. Al became an ordained minister shortly after his parents’ divorce.

Al got involved in social activism during his teenage years, organizing several youth protests before he graduated from high school in 1972, and forming a national youth movement, named “National Youth Movement.” After two years of college, he dropped out and worked as national touring manager for singer James Brown, where he met his wife Kathy. (They have two teenage daughters.)

Since then he has led numerous publicity grabbing protests following incidents of racial attacks and police brutality (such as the police assault of Haitian immigrant Abner Luoima) and formed a national action network (called “National Action Network”) with 20 chapters around the country. In other words, like Pat Buchanan and Jesse Jackson, he is a political figure famous for incendiary talk and not much else.

    Quotes

“”He’s sort of a cult leader, actually.” — author Stanley Crouch
“…they will say that Al Sharpton cannot get the majority of the white vote. The fact is–no Democrat has gotten the majority of the white vote in many years. Bill Clinton didn’t get the majority of the white vote. The Democratic Party has been able to put together a coalition of a sizeable portion of the white vote, the overwhelming majority of black votes and Latino votes. That has been their winning strategy…” — Sharpton

BUSTED: Caught on an FBI Surveillance Tape Discussing a Cocaine Deal

The television show HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel showed a 1983 FBI videotape in which Al Sharpton is seen talking about laundering drug money with former mobster Michael Franzese, a Mafioso-turned-undercover-FBI informant posing as a cocaine dealer. Now you might think something like this might be bad news for a presidential candidate, but to hear Sharpton talk about it, there’s nothing unseemly about it.

Now, to be fair, no indictments were issued and the sting operation was never completed. But those are pretty thin excuses for a president of the United States. (At least he didn’t blame a DUII on his political enemies.)

Sharpton got into this mess through his friendship with boxing promoter Don King, a longtime friend of his. Franzese, a former Colombo family captain, alleges that a South American drug dealer looking to launder money through boxing promotions approached him. According to Franzese,Sharpton was going to arrange a meeting between the dealer and King.

But the drug dealer was really an undercover FBI agent in a probe of boxing corruption. Sharpton claimed the tape was a “total attempt to set up and criminalize people,” that it was leaked to scuttle his possible presidential bid, and that HBO distorted the evidence by showing only selected portions of the tape. He also clamed that a second tape existed that exonerated him.

Sharpton sued HBO for defamation and asked for $1 billion in damages. (As if he had a billion dollar reputation before the tape aired.) HBO Sports spokesman Ray Stallone described the suit as “so silly that it is unworthy of comment.” Nothing has come of it since it was filed. Click here for sources

    Known Associate of Michael Jackson

Any leader needs to build coalitions among diverse groups and individuals. And no individual is more diverse than Sharpton’s recent ally, Michael Jackson.

They appeared together at a news conference where Jackson complained that his recent crappy album “Invincible” sold poorly because of a “racist conspiracy” by Sony Music to “turn the public against me.” Yeah, we were all with you Michael until Sony told us to drop you like a hot potato. Jackson went on to say “When you fight for me, you’re fighting for all black people, dead and alive.” When pressed about his color, Jackson (who reportedly has had numerous skin whitening treatments and nose jobs to appear more Caucasian) said “I know my race. I just look in the mirror. I know I’m black.” Click here for sources

    Reckless Blowhard

Sharpton made his name and his fame as the one to lead a protest movement after every racially charged incident in New York over the last 30 years (and many elsewhere in the U.S.) Especially early in his career, he seemed content and even eager to inflame racial hatreds at the risk of violence, as long as it gave him publicity and power.

Several of these protests escalated to the point of violence, in several cases by those who Sharpton championed. Examples include the Crown Heights riot of 1991, and a 1995 arson attack on a Jewish Harlem jeweler that resulted in 8 deaths. That attack came months after Sharpton made remarks about the “white interloper”. (He later apologized, saying that he wouldn’t use the word white again in that context.)

Two incidents however appear to have caused him to tone down his excesses and refine his image. First, in 1987, black teenager Tawana Brawley claimed that six white law enforcement officers — including then-assistant district attorney Steven Pagones — had abducted and raped her, scrawled racial insults on her body and smeared her with feces.

Miss Brawley refused to speak with authorities or the media, but Sharpton and her two other advisers were soon making wild claims. Sharpton compared then-state Attorney General Robert Abrams, a Jew, to Adolf Hitler. All three linked then-Gov. Mario Cuomo to organized crime and the Ku Klux Klan.

Within a year, a grand jury announced the story was a hoax and specifically cleared a Fishkill police officer and Pagones. Pagones sued Sharpton and the other 2 advisers for more than $150 million for defamation. At this point, Sharpton’s involvements is similar to George Bush and the Iraqi uranium purchase forgeries — it’s unclear if he was actively involved in fraud, or just recklessly willing to use information he knew was very shaky to make his political point.

The other turning point came in 1991 when Sharpton was stabbed by a drunk white man during a protest march in Bensonhurst; after that he began to mellow. “There are times [since the stabbing] when I’ve found him remarkable and responsible,” says critic Stanley Crouch. He recalls that after the murder of Yusuf Hawkins, a young black man from Brooklyn, Sharpton brought together Hawkins’ stepfather with one of the group of white boys that had killed his son. “This would have been more recognized had it been someone like Giuliani,” says Crouch. “After the Diallo verdict, he discouraged people from being violent,” warning locals in New York that violence would not only put them in harm’s way, but it would reduce them to the low level from which the unjust verdict originated,” he notes. “So you have these great moments.

The Rev. and the Fugitive Sharpton tried to set up Chesimard, activists say
By Ron Howell, Newsday, Friday 21 October 1988

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who has worked as a federal informant, tried to set up a meeting with black fugitive radical JoAnne Chesimard in 1983, according to activists who said they were approached by Sharpton.

The black activists said they feared Sharpton was trying to deliver Chesimard into the arms of federal agents, but said they had no proof.

One law-enforcement source, who declined to be identified but has detailed knowledge of Sharpton’s activities as an FBI informant, said this week that Sharpton was working as an informant at the time he sought to meet Chesimard. The source said that one of Sharpton’s assignments was to try to lead agents to Chesimard, who escaped from prison in 1979 after being convicted in the killing a New Jersey state trooper.

It wasn’t a big massive operation. It was just a small shot, an everyday deal, the source said. I would equate it with setting up 10 traps a day trying to catch a fox . . . He said Sharpton was not a major participant in the search for the woman, who goes by the African name Assata Shakur.

A top FBI official said that Sharpton was not used in any manner to lure Shakur into a trap. This is the first I’m hearing of it, it’s bull———, FBI Assistant Deputy Director Kenneth Walton, who led the Shakur investigation, said earlier this week.

Sharpton flatly denied trying to make contact with Shakur.

Newsday reported in January that beginning in 1983 Sharpton secretly supplied federal law enforcement agencies with information on boxing promoter Don King, reputed organized crime figures and black leaders and elected officials. And in a two-hour interview, Sharpton admitted to Newsday that he had assisted the government in drug and organized crime cases. He said he also accompanied undercover federal agents wearing body recorders to meetings with various subjects of federal investigations. He said he had allowed the U.S. attorney’s office for the Eastern District of New York to install a tapped telephone in his Brooklyn home.

Sharpton has insisted he never turned over information on black radicals or on King.

This week, Sharpton denied assertions by Ahmed Obafemi, a long-time activist, and Kwame Brathwaite, an activist and photographer who says Sharpton asked him to set up an encounter with Obafemi. Both men say that Obafemi acted as the intermediary in the failed discussions with Sharpton to reach Shakur.

Sharpton called the men liars and said they were possibly police agents. He charged they are part of an element in the black community that has lost out . . . and that will fabricate any story out of jealousy because they have no following . . .

Obafemi, the national organizer for the New Afrikan People’s Organization, said Sharpton met with him in Manhattan at least four times in 1983, over a period of about two months. He said that Sharpton offered to donate money to help black revolutionaries running from the law and that Sharpton was particularly interested in setting up a meeting with Shakur, once referred to as the soul of the Black Liberation Army.

Sharpton told Obafemi he was representing two former Black Panthers, who wanted to see Shakur, according to Obafemi.

The ex-Panthers were supposedly trying to make useful contacts in case they had to flee the country someday, Obafemi said he was told.

The first discussion was that they were close to her, that they had been in the [Black Panther] party with her and that they wanted to talk to her, Obafemi said. I wanted to find out who they were, but he said they really didn’t want to be known.

Shakur was once a member of the Black Panther Party, but went underground around 1971 because she said she believed the group was being infiltrated by city and federal law enforcement officers.

The 1983 deal fell through at a final meeting when Sharpton insisted that money would be donated only if the two former Panthers could meet Shakur. Failing that, Obafemi said, Sharpton was interested in making any kind of contact with her or with any of her close associates also on the run from the law. Naturally, I never got back to him, said Obafemi, whose organization believes that blacks should have their own country within the United States and that they have the right to fight for it.

Obviously we had to feel that a definite possibility existed he was working for the government, and we would have felt that way about him or anybody else who approached us in that manner, said Chokwe Lumumba, an attorney and chairman of the New Afrikan People’s Organization.

Lumumba had been informed in 1983 by Obafemi about Sharpton’s proposal. The attorney said his organization was more interested in getting information about Sharpton’s motives than in receiving money from him. I can’t say that we were able to make any definite conclusions about whether Sharpton was acting as an agent for the government, Lumumba said.

Both Lumumba and Obafemi denied knowing where Shakur was at the time.

Sharpton’s first broached his interest in Shakur during a chance encounter with Brathwaite, a black nationalist, Brathwaite said. Brathwaite said he happened to run into Sharpton one day in midtown but he could not remember the month. Already acquainted with each other from entertainment circles, the two men started talking and Sharpton said he wanted to make a donation to Assata, Brathwaite said.

A day or two later, Brathwaite told Obafemi of the offer. I told him to watch out, said Brathwaite. I knew that authorities were trying to find out where she [Assata Shakur] was and that they were trying to get close to somebody who was close to her . . . And then I just knew that he’s always been a hustler.

Last year, Newsday disclosed that Shakur was given political asylum in Cuba and was living there with her daughter, now 14 years old. She is probably the most sought-after of the 1970s radicals linked to bank robberies and police killings over a 10-year span.

The specific amount of the contribution Sharpton said he was prepared to make in 1983 on behalf of the ex-Panthers was not discussed, Obafemi said; but Sharpton said the prospective contributors gained the money by ripping off the system, Obafemi recalled.

He said that at least two of the meetings occurred in a luxurious apartment at 30 Lincoln Plaza, near Lincoln Center. That was the building where, according to a law enforcement source and a report published in the Feb. 2, 1988 edition of The Village Voice, a federal agent using the name Victor Quintana set up an apartment in 1983 or earlier to lure boxing world denizens suspected of illegal activity. Quintana in that year ensnared Sharpton into working for the FBI, New York Newsday reported in January.

The Village Voice article reported that apartment was on the 29th floor, but Obafemi could not recall the floor on which he had his rendezvous with Sharpton. Sharpton lives in Brooklyn and Obafemi said he did not explain why Sharpton had access to the apartment. He made me think it was his, said Obafemi. I was saying (to myself), ’What kind of money must they have to have a spot in here.’ He had the keys and everything.

Sharpton denied this week ever being in the building.

Obafemi said that up until 1983 he knew Sharpton only as the head of a youth organization, the National Youth Movement, and as someone with vague connections in the entertainment world.

Obafemi is the ex-husband of Nehanda Obafemi, once known as Cheri Laverne Dalton, who is still wanted by the federal government in connection with the notorious Brink’s robbery which took place seven years ago yesterday. She is allegedly connected to the group of black and white revolutionaries convicted in the Brink’s heist. A guard and two police officers were killed in that incident, which took place upstate near Nyack.

In 1983, Obafemi was busy trying to gain support in the black community for the people arrested in the Brink’s case. In October of that year, several blacks and whites were convicted in that robbery and in the highly planned breakout of Shakur from prison in 1979.

The law enforcement source implicating Sharpton in the hunt for Assata Shakur said that Sharpton was also, secondarily, trying to help agents get other fugitives, especially Mutulu Shakur, who was still on the run at that time. Mutulu Shakur, no relation to Assata, was later apprehended and convicted in connection with the Brink’s robbery and the escape of Assata Shakur.

here they going thinking blacks want a hand out, african american unemployment rate is up these people with housing demands not being met,and this supposed to be a land of opportunity.Yea for foreigners and whites. These land robbing devils continue to add fuel to the flame i was just reading an article of a black college student being denied of housing, see without proof you will never be able to prove this form of ignorance dont exsist.OH btw al shiety and them want to do something now, lets rewind and come again where was ol slick back when that man was found hung in missisipi,or when the guy that shot up the brewry because he got caught taking beer allegedly.Which never makes sense to me that a black man will steal beer ,it will seem more believeable to me if he stole weed if thats what was sold its hard to get that.Hey there is not much I can do if anyone serious about saving our own you know where I be.Keep your eyes on wolves in sheep clothing, and the mother land become our father land they want nothing to do with african americans unless you are rich we are on our own.Last of a dying breed
