derrion albert children and violence

Every time a soldier in Iraq or Afghanistan is killed, it makes headlines.  Whenever a police officer or firefighter dies, we hear about it.  If there’s an unfortunate shooting at a prestigious university or small town all-American school, society pauses and grapples with the notion of how this could have happened there, in middle America, far removed from the mires of urban life.  But what about the countless young children whose lives are cut short daily in cities across this nation?  Who hears their cries?  Who listens to the plight of suffering mothers and fathers mourning the dead?  And who will step in to curb the extreme rise in violence and utter disregard for human life that is so pervasive now in our community?

The world was recently fixated on a disturbing video clip which captured the brutal, senseless murder of 16-year-old Chicago honor roll student Derrion Albert.  Apparently caught in between two rival student groups on his way home from Fenger High School, young Derrion was beaten with wooden planks, kicked, stomped upon and beaten some more till his lifeless body was dragged away.  In what appeared to be an all-out ‘brawl’ outside of his school, the horrific incident was followed by more incomprehensible unrest at what was supposed to be a peaceful memorial for Derrion a few days later.

Watching this graphic video will make anyone shudder at the amount of young people involved, the extent of violence that erupted and the complete lack of respect for humanity on display.  Because this horrific incident was in fact caught on tape, the media and those who normally turn a blind eye towards the downtrodden had no choice but to take note.  But what we must keep in mind is that in addition to Derrion’s violent death, over 30 Chicago students lost their lives in 2008 alone, when some 290 shootings took place.  And this epidemic isn’t unique to Chicago alone.  The same week that the this brawl occurred, a 15-year-old in Arizona died after being stabbed repeatedly following an argument with another student.  And all across the country, young children – specifically children of color and those in poorer disenfranchised neighborhoods – may have lost their lives, and we will likely never hear about these young souls because their incident wasn’t captured on tape.

Now we must ask ourselves, what are we doing to curb this most pressing issue?  If children are in fact the bearers of the torch for tomorrow, what are we doing to train, protect and guide them to lead the way?  Why are more and more of our youth acting out in such vicious, destructive methods?  Ask any psychologist and he or she will tell you that the first place a child learns behavior is from their parents.  With more and more broken homes, and parents/grandparents struggling to make ends meet, young people often find friends and the streets as their mentor.  Turning to music and entertainment that also often times glorifies violence and the superficial, our neglected youth quickly adapt behavior they deem will protect them in neighborhoods where authorities sometimes fail to do so.  Attending poorly funded and inadequately staffed schools, these children grow up in an environment of hopelessness, anger and frustration which no doubt contributes to the rise in aggression so prevalent around the country.

The breakdown of a family structure, high incarceration rates and poverty unequivocally leads to violence.  Easy access to firearms contributes to violence.  An environment of crime, glorification of negativity and a lack of structure leads to violence.  Lack of opportunity and proper education sooner or later results in violence.  It’s a horrific cycle that must be shattered, and must be addressed immediately.  We are losing too many of our young – those like honor roll student Derrion who may have gone on to find the cure for AIDS, or created a new life saving vaccine.  Unfortunately he, like so many of our children, have been robbed of their opportunity.

Everyday, parents from around the world come to the United States with the hopes of giving their children better education, and a chance to improve their lives.  Let us not fail the millions who are already here and in desperate need.  We all need to take bold action this instant, for the cameras won’t always be there, but the tears and heartache of grief can be heard everywhere.

Just listen.

The murders in cities like L.A.,chicago and detroit will never stop.the gangs live the most destitute areas and have no reason to stop.they believe that killing gains them respect and makes everyone fear them.It also allows them to sell their drugs with scared to call the police who act like hitlers SS. When the police come in they let everyone know you called them which puts your life in danger.all black people know that the police job is not to stop crime but to contain it.no one even cares about the crime in these cities until it hits the news which is very seldom, because the white news media does’nt care about black stories where blacks are victims.again black teenager is doused with gasoline by two white teenagers and set on fire, what happens, the police charge the black teenager with assault because a cousin of the black teenager had a argument with the white boys.police taser 11 and 12 year old black children and beat them until the pee and deficate on themselves.14 year old black girl is beaten with fist by latino police officer for riding her bike on the sidewalk she was also kicked. Now you these are a few of hundreds of cases where white police kill and mame black people in those cities.the gangs know they have nothing to fear. White police being paid off black drug dealers, black people see these things, police even friends with the black thugs and hoodlums because they are destroying the neighborhoods there in. Black genocide is the goal and the proof is why white news media does’nt report it.white racist hate is the driving force and lone wolves are released by the republicans, blacks know that too. So what makes you think it will ever stop. Give it a couple of weeks and everything will be back to normal, and the white news media will go back to reporting on animals, celebrities, what the rep. Say about obama, white people having trouble etc. And as far as the murders of black women and children,it will just get worse.

The code of silence that is taking place in schools. Basically all the students know who the gang members are and are afraid. There has not been any police presence or trauma staff sent into the schools to help the students cope with these killings. If so, I haven’t seen it on the news.

Society is to blame for the creation of the so called Thug Culture where Corporations promote violence for profit to our youth. We collectively are all to blame for the violence and sexual depravity we see reflected in our youth. When a website that says it targets users age 14 yrs old and up, then it should be more conscious of what it promotes on it websites. Take a look at the photos and the ads for fling which is basically a user submitted porn dating site. Stop acting like we do not know why our kids are whiling out when we know full damn well that we are either directly involved in their corruption or passively allowing others to corrupt them.

Teen violence is a reflection of adult violence. They learn their ways from those closest to them, the messages in the music that tell them “you can do whatever U like,” and the videos and movies they watch. They imitate what they see. The solution will be that the adults in the Black communities will need to take responsibility and become better role models, show love, protect thy neighbor, clean their yards and streets, stop loitering and doing drugs/alcohol in areas where children are present – better yet, do your “dirt” in your house, not on the street – celebrate the children and teens who are doing the right things rather than glamorize the hoodlums and desperate-mode mentality. In doing this, in my opinion, we can make more areas that are predominantly Black more safe and instill values and life skills in young people that will mold our people into productive citizens in every city across the nation.

I vehemently disagree with the good Rev on the “poorly funded and inadequately staffed schools” as being the problem…even if these schools had all the money they wanted at their disposal and fully staffed you would have this same issue. The curriculum is the crux of this problem. Who cares if your school is freshly painted with enough teachers you need, if those teaches are teaching nonsense. Ways have to be developed to make people just as interested in school as they are in sports and athletics. Look at how they are marketed to our communities. Kobe, Lebron, Carmello, Jay Z, Diddy, Oprah, Cosby etc. are heroes in our community. Why? one simple reason. They all have money. Money is the standard by which we decide whether someone is “somebody” or not. Never mind the fact that all Kobe is doing is playing ball, or Diddy is making music or Cosby is writing jokes, and that these skills offer nothing to humanity. Also, if you stop and look at all the dudes in the world right now who play basketball, then consider there are about 300 or so jobs available in the NBA, Or how many dudes are rapping, vs how many are making a decent living at it..You actually have better odds at becoming a successful Chemical engineer, mathematician, or IT specialist. Our people (boys specifically) are turned off by the education process by the time they hit 6th grade. More money or teachers won’t change that!

One of he reasons why things wont change is because people don’t want to take responsibility for what they do.

The gangs feed off irresponsible black parents who have been having a huge number of kids in the last 25 years and have not taking responsibility for them. I know black males and females with eight or more kids. I know some people with 15 or more kids. NO they don’t have the means of taking care of them.

A large number of these kids end up not going to school, having kids at a young age and getting involved in criminal activity. This is the root of the problem. You can’t put all the blame on the schools or politicians because it starts at home.

@glen1 I don’t see how its the media fault and just because a few cops do some bad things does not mean black people should be killing each other. Where is the connection? Where are the black people who had these kids? What are your responsibilities as a so called parent?

I’m too desensitized by violence to care. It’s a way of life, and no amount of rallying and talking about ending it will change things. The love of violence is hardwired in some black folks and are indoctrinated to others. We are taught to believe that education is for nerds and weaklings and that thug-life is the best life. Bill Cosby will never be as respected as Tupac to many blacks. That will never, ever change. People of all ages in the black community will continue to die. Don’t blame slavery, the white man, or the “system.” Blame yourselves. Next story please…

We as black people need to step up and come together. What happened to “It takes a village to raise a child?” we need to get back to that mentality. Open and support our local BOB(black owned businesses), teach at our schools and take responsibility for each other. When we see that young black child in the streets acting foolish we need to put them in their place and then go tell there parents. Something has to be done, these kids our the future of our race!! Man when is everybody going to wake up and realize?! We need poor positive educational black programs on television. More after school programs for our children and activities. Keep them involved and busy, Going to school and making good grades needs to be a requirement!!!!

we as a community can’t put the blame on others, it is time we, you, me, us stand up for our kids. we are allowing our children to become mere statistic, as we idly stand by.
the major problem is lack of moral up bringing. we deny Christ in our homes. i am not speaking of the white mans Christ { one who holds a bible in one hand and a noose in the other } but of the true and living Christ – the one that saves from the uttermost, the Christ that is no respector of persons – the real Jesus. we need to talk about the sin nature,in all of our lives.let’s be for real – our children are lost because we are lost – we have no idea who we are – our identity in Christ has been stolen. but that is about to change, because we are going to make it change. all praying people need to pray and take authority over the enemy of our souls {satan, demonic forces} whether its parents, kids, police, systems etc.. we need to cast him out – we are not fighting flesh and blood but spiritual wickedness in high places. it’s not the people themselves but the spirits within or attached to them. sin is sin and as believers we need to take authority over it. we have the blood of Jesus, the word of Jesus and the Spirit of Jesus. the battle is not ours but his; lets pray in agreement with him so that this war for our souls is won.

    Hey My People:
PlEASE DON’T BE IN DESPARE! Help is on the way. Our freedom fighters in the past did the best they could. They help to get us what they call “Civil Rights”. There is a new much needed movement that is blowing in the wind. It is called the “Equal Rights Movement”. Civility can no longer be accepted by the Native African American community. With hope and lots of prayer, my new book called “IN FEAR, NOT INFERIOR” will drum major intense dialogue and force accountability like never before. We as a race have been crippled by the lack of this movement. I am hopeful that our people will experience a playing field that is equal. Help is on the way. We will communicate and fight until our ancestors are proud. Please keep you head up.

_A_ makes a marvelous point all the funding in the world wont ensure a world class education if the structures are not in place to motivate our children. Internal and external structures. The home and community have to encourage and inspire our youth. One method would be to make redemption real in our communities. Since we have one of the largest rates of incaration in the country, we can also have one of the largest rates of success if we give those young people coming home a real chance at it. Make redemption real so that those young men who return to our communities can be real parents earning a real living and tell their children from where they came. Help to create the success you desire and remember its never to late to be all you can any thoughts

I Am More – is a nonviolent peace and love fest for social change, which is mobile, a community development project designed to stop the violence in our community by creating mass media events, packed with workshops and proactive community support. Proactive, because for the first time we are using tactic’s designed to stop crime before it happens, through the use of “Soul power” a spiritual movement, using people power, the power of unity, using the power of education to destroy old mind sets, creating new economic empowerment, promoting nonviolent idea’s and a new mind set of creative economic life skills, which will be passed on from generation to generation.

Most of the crimes committed are crimes for money, crimes related to drugs or sex related for money. This program taken from a walk in our past, back to the days when Atlanta was the murder capital of the world, radio station WAOK held Road Shows in the projects and hard hit communities of Atlanta, these show’s united the community. At least for that day, that week, we did not kill anyone; but we all went to the Road Shows and gave our support.

We are going a step further; using the power of education, the collective power of a united people power movement, local government agencies, the local churches, nonprofits/for profit business, the Arts, local artist and powerful speakers all united together to work with the community in the fight to stop the killing and incarceration rates of our youths and poor populations in our communities. This is a fun filled event where local music artist, promoters, movie makers, radio and community leaders all come together to reaching out to local talents, singers, dancers, actors, writers, church choirs, groups and powerful speakers from all walks of life, speakers from local government to jump start our communities involvement in local government, all speaking out to stop the violence and to tell our children to stop going to jail, but rather to go to school; to put the guns/drugs down and to pick a real trade, income producing skills or start a business to create real economic power by collective economic income producing programs/services and events that help build up the community not using crime as a means of economic support, which is systemically killing the economic growth on our communities.

We are seeking your input and idea’s to better represent the victims of crime, for those who want to speak out or give testimonials (note we do not want to bring more hurt on those families or the families of those incarcerated; but we do want to work with them) please contact us and we ask that this email be forwarded to Sonja Brown of Fulton County, we will host a meeting on 13th August 1300 hr, and I will send further information about the meeting and location by email on 5th August. We are seeking other Fulton County Department and The city of Atlanta workers and government elected officials to speak to the public on all the efforts/program or projects of the county or city to bring helps’ needed to the community, to build a partnership with the community, teaching of your department and its usefulness to the community, teaching how local government works; many do not know that help is there for them.

The Road Show – We are reaching out into the community hosting these events giving local artists a platform to sing, rap, dance, act or speak to the people positive change and efforts to speak out to stop the violence and to stop our children from going to jail for violent crimes, for gangs or money. The Road Show is the platform from which we all come together in that community when all the nonprofits and for profit businesses come together with the public to share their services, goods, foods and helping programs. This is an economic empowerment event which reaches directly into the communities with deliberate income producing opportunity for everyone in the community. A platform for local businesses to reach out to the communities they serve, stopping the robbing and killing, creating jobs and positive interaction of local venders with those living in the areas they serve. Linking the schools, nonprofits, churches and other medical and community development programs directly to the public who may or may not know of the programs/project or services they have in their community.
Many of these programs will bring much needed help to those who need it most. This is also a fund raising event to build programs that help provide services to stop the violent crimes committed in our communities, programs such as this Road Show, its classes and generating funding to create programs to fight incarceration by education and economic empowerment, to funds for lawyers to help those incarcerated or at risk of incarceration to proactively help reduce the rates of incarceration of youths.
Many of these families are too poor to afford lawyers and legal representation and state lawyers can only do so much. We will host these events in every local park in every community to jump start our economy at a community level. Producing income from the ground up is our goal as each community will be promoting its goods; housing and services to the public, increasing relationships and links for networking and income producing partnerships. Partnerships will grow and develop as we host these events from community to community. Our message to our youth, is LOVE, to love one another and do unto others as you would have them do unto you, to use their skills, education and talents to produce income, not drugs and guns, to stop violent acts of crimes to produce income, let us teach you how to produce income by legal means, teaching income producing living skills, business education at street level, home ownership as well as family and community building. Train our people to “Stop going to jail”.

Workshops and local competition of fine cooking, as we host cook off competitions of local shops, restaurants and competition of local hair shops, clothing shops and local designers fight for the right to be called the BEST. As they host fashion shows showing their work, show casing their skills and locations. This will promote community involvement as they get their hair fixed and work the runways. This is a media event folks will not forget and we are deliberately creating economic opportunities for the poor, and income producing events for the middle class, local businesses and venders. We are training and teaching the people how to make money, using this event in allowing them to sell food, goods and services at these events which will create a burst of income for these families and communities; depending on how many days we will host the Road Show in that location, will determine how quickly we can jump start that communities economy. Producing income from the ground up is our goal. Here it is, hair shop owners, clothing store owners, the modeling agents, the competition between the African braid shop and the Dominican braid shop that take us into creative economics which creates a learning environment for local citizens to learn by doing the secrets of the business world. This is a fun day of events and a powerful showing of how creative income events work. This is community policing, take charge of our community.

Linking and Networking: By hosting an event this large we are building a massive linking and networking platform which will create thousands of partnership and linking relationships. This is the backbone of creative funding and mass economic growth. By planting seeds of hope, seed money and changing economic growth patterns, we change the mindset of the people, as people are educated in how to make money, this opens the doors to more idea’s which opens the doors to new creative funding opportunities. This is the key; we have created an income producing event deliberately created to produce income at hood level and at street level; events that brings income, hope and faith to our communities. Workshops’, training classes, music and movie producers and promoters everywhere creates an environment of social change where anything can happen. A person’s life can change overnight, changing his/her economic outcome forever. This is a festive event and a think tank event where like minds and creative idea’s flow. By networking with local businesses and nonprofits we form a powerful partnership at the community level which creates income opportunities for all involved; by linking to law enforcement, city and county workers programs, we create an even stronger bond and community partnership between the people and our local government. By forming this bond with local law enforcement it helps reduce crime, as police learn the families and the names of the children/people they serve it changes everything. Because in my grandfather’s day they knew every child on the block, they whipped your behind if they saw you out in public acting out and would then take you home to your mother who gave you another whipping and told you to wait until your father got home! This is what we are teaching this new generation. We are teaching them Extended Family Living Skills, Economic life skills, creative funding and classes to change the total mind set of those generations affected by our drug sales, sex for money and the negative side of the hip hop culture. Education is our most powerful weapon in the fight to win back our youth. We will win them by proactive programs that teach them that crime pays but there is a cost-the unseen costs are greater than the rewards.

This is just an overview of the program and proactive approach we are taking to take back our communities. This is an ongoing project that will take place year round in every community. We will video our efforts and all events and we will rebuild our communities and revive our people, fighting crime and violence; fighting unemployment and incarceration at the source, the very origin of the problem; we will change the mind set of our people, changing it from the negative GET MONEY BY ANY MEANS, to the positive mind set of LOVE YOUR FELLOW MAN, GET MONEY BUT DON’T LET MONEY GET YOU.

contact info: Lionel Gantt @ 2601 Creekveiw Dr Mariatta GA 30008, ganttlionel@yahoo.com 404 839 6511 please come join us in our and help get your church, organizations, donors and Radio stations involued to help us Thank You for your support.

geoggapeach69, It is with heart felt love that write unto you now. We are hosting with the SCLC chpt. of GA a Stop the Violence and Incarceration movement in Atlanta on the 30th July 2011, it is stories like your own that we hear everyday in the hard hit communities of Atlanta and the surrounding counties and small town communities statewide. We believe that we must start at our own people 1st then work with others. I Am More – Stop the Violence and Incarceration Movement has proven to be effective and a powerful factor in unitifying our people. I would ask for your help and input in this movement for non-violent social change, this is more than a civil right and equal-right movement, as we are fighting for the nation of black people living America.
