US-troops-set-out-on-a-pa-001

Most Americans forget that there’s a war going on outside – or rather more than one.  In the midst of chasing after celebrities and keeping up on the latest gadgets, we’re often pushed into some sort of forced seclusion that bars us from the ongoing reality of two active wars.  And for the last 18 years, a ban on coverage of dead soldiers brought back home only further masked the harsh truth of conflict.  Dating back to the 1991 Gulf war, the bodies of young men and women killed overseas were blocked from media coverage – that is, until now.

After lifting the media coverage ban earlier this year, President Obama himself made it a point to stand throughout the midnight hours last week as the newest casualties of the Afghan war were lifted off of a cargo plane one by one at Dover Air Force Base.  Saluting each flag covered casket as it was carried out, the President witnessed first hand the human cost of war, something our previous President never did.  And the American people were also able to observe this somber ceremony where 15 soldiers and three D.E.A. agents were brought home for their final resting.

Following the deadliest month of the inherited war in Afghanistan, where some 55 Americans were killed in October alone, President Obama faces an extremely complex and no doubt intense decision as to how we should proceed.  Is it best to pull out our troops immediately?  Should we send in more support for the ones that are already there?  And what exactly does ‘victory’ in that region mean?  Conducting routine war council meetings with the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and regularly listening to the advice of generals on the ground, the President is once again assessing an issue from all possible angles – including the human angle.

“It was a sobering reminder of the extraordinary sacrifices that our young men and women in uniform are engaging in every single day, not only our troops but their families as well,” stated the President following the ceremony at Dover.  Admitting that this very evident human sacrifice was going to way heavily on his decision in Afghanistan, Obama once again broke from the past.  Refusing to dismiss the conflict as something in a distant land removed from American society, the President brought home the rough reality of this 8-year-long engagement and how any future action will directly impact people’s lives.

Breaking with his predecessor’s tradition, Obama has not only taken a hands on approach with honoring fallen soldiers, but he is proving yet again that constructive, well-thought out decision making yields the best results – and not arrogant, ego-driven rash behavior.  When more and more of our dead children are being flown home, it’s amazing that some would criticize the President for not making a quicker decision.  Instead of recognizing the complexities involved in such a matter, these critics want nothing more than to use any excuse to attack Obama and divide the country at a time when we need to be unified more than ever.

I support Obama, and whatever final decision he will arrive to because I know that it will not be done in haste.  I know that he personally stood for hours and saluted fallen men and women, met with their families and did not return to the White House till 4:45 AM that day.  And perhaps, most importantly, I know that he wants all of us to be aware of the daily sacrifices being made, and to be well informed of what we in turn have all inherited.  It’s time to get out from our seclusion and start paying attention.

Well think about this, if nobody was over there fighting in these “WARS”, he wouldn’t have to stand outside and salute dead bodies at all because it wouldn’t be any… clown

What that guy inherited is a Yeoman’s work.
Then is this new Nobel Prize which I see as another means of putting extra pressure on his efforts. The call “bring our soldiers back home” I readily understand. But the USA had for generations set the super giant army in motion. How many millions, we can all guess. Then, the super killing machines, costing many billions of dollars ?.
We in African are still suffering from the trauma left behind by the USA, at the request of the money makers, That we are almost no contributors to welfare of the world today !.
But bring this millions of people back home and what will they do?. Even when asked to sleep and be paid, these are human-beings, and no man wakes up in the morning, eat and go back to sleep. Should they be discharged how do they live? What will be the load in the job market and the social environments?. And do Americans care about the chaos left behind in the name of democracy. Look out to the Black Continent, Latin America etc.
Meanwhile, we can say he is being sacrificed for the misdoings of his white great grandfathers.

I like listening to you Rev Sharpton…and I respect you…however this is a war the Obama said he supported and voted for. He also said this is the war that he would fight and win….so this is for all purposes … his war.

Rameses as far as Africa and black people and America….America wasn’t the only country getting slaves from Africa….it is what the whole world was doing…THE WHOLE WORLD…it was common practice…so why is it the Europe and all the south american countries pretend that the US and onle the US had a slave problem…what I do know is that the white people in the US are the only white people in the world that had a civil war that liberated African slaves (Abraham Lincoln)… Ask any European that practiced slavery of Africans if their country has yet elected a black man as president…not one of them can say that they did…so Americans (black) stop being so hard on this place that we are making our home….not too many other places can say that they do it any better.

    @ IvanRoss
The big difference between America and the other countries that slave traded was not the fact of slavery but the TYPE of slavery. Also it wasn’t the whole world but the western european nations or so called “western society” that participated in the slave trade. The most damaging thing done to black Americans during slavery was not the slavery in and of itself but the systematic destruction of our culture. This was an American idea which was the main thing responsible for America’s successful slave trade and also why black people in America have had such a hard time in recovering. If you do your research you will find that revolts were both more frequent and more successful among the other countries slave groups.

The other countries saw fit to abolish slavery on their own. America being a new upstart needed slavery in order to become the super power it is today and so the founding fathers wrote slavery into the constitution in such a way that they expected it to atrophy over time and fall out of use at the point where they thought we would no longer need it. They underestimated the power of capitalism however which kept it in practice until the civil war.

I should also add that the civil war wasn’t really about abolishing slavery as much as it was about preserving the union which was threatened not by conscientious objections to slavery but by a debate over which capitalistic ideology should prevail. That represented by the industrial revolution, Eli Whitney, and the cotton gin or that represented by the plantations of the south. As you know after the civil war sharecropping took over in the south which is socially identical to what was already going on in the north and still remains to this day. As basic as I can put it we have economic slavery now where you go to work for the bourgeoisie to make money so that you can purchase goods and services from the bourgeoisie. If you barely make enough to live then the reality is that you don’t really need the money right? They can just give you what you need to do the job which of course was much more obvious during the industrial revolution when people shopped at the store which was in the factory where they worked. Now things look on the surface to be a lot different but the realities are largely the same.

We are the 1st to have a biracial/black president without a black majority but I would attribute that more so to a perfect storm if you will than a racist free majority. First off the Democratic nominee was going to be the winner without a doubt by the time it all played out. The Democratic party also happens to be the progressive/civil rights party. President Obama was a hell of a candidate and the best available on any criteria you want to use all the way down to looks and speach patterns. If there was ever a time for him to run it was then. He had an oppurtunity that wasn’t likely to come along again this century and he took it. Good luck and much support to him, he needs it with all the racist wingnuts out there.

Well put BombayStilelnc and thanks for addressing IvanRoss the way that you have. To the article, I’m getting a little tired of the usage of the word “inherited” All issues, problems of the previous administration are inherited by the next admin, its the nature of the job and you know that going in. Funny, how Dems/Libs didn’t talk about all the problems Bush inherited by the Clinton administration which included a recession with the burst of the NASDAQ bubble just to name one. In my view, the biggest issue isn’t whose war this is, but rather, the promises made by Obama during the election. If I recall correctly, he promised these troops would be returned within 6-18 months. Crazy as it sounds, but McCain was not willing to commit to a time line due to the complexities of the war, and in hindsight turned out to be the right move strategically, but the wrong move politically. Obama capitalized on the willingness of the Amer people to have this war ended asap, so he wrote a check that appears to have bounced. Politricks is all about trying to and staying elected, and Obama has proven further, that politicians will say/do anything to get elected. As for Mr. Sharpton, I respect you greatly, but I now fear that your willingness to speak truth to power will now be tempered somewhat out of fear of speaking out against a Blackman. While I respect that, I have mixed feelings about it. If Obama’s policies turn out to be just as harmful as the previous admin to the masses in general, blacks in particular, how long will you deal with this President with kids gloves? MR. Sharpton, keep in mind, you are indebted more to the people than to Mr. Obama, but the nature of politricks has a way of making people alter what they originally set out to do.

First of all I have done my research…. The American civil war was about preserving the union, but it was a union that was broken because of slavery of African people. It could have been easy for this nation to say to hell with them n!ggers and then proceeded with a perfect union WITH slavery. In this case yes Americans fought a war in the name of slavery.

Next, are you familiar with where the term lynching came from? In order to learn how to keep slaves in line, American slave owners had to reach out to other African slave owning cultures. Thus they sought out (Willie Lynch) a British slave owner in the West Indies on how to break and de-power Africans. This was done by turning light skin against dark skin, female against male and young against old Africans and of course LYNCHING any African slave that showed true rejection of slavery or any other type of disrespect. There were many other cultures that did this, and Americans learned from them.

Also check your history and see that long before Europeans had African Slaves, you would see that Persians (Iran) had African slaves as well was Mesopotamians. Many other Asian and South Asian cultures had African slaves. Even Africans had African slaves. And there is no such thing as humanitarian treatment of slaves, (in other words no one practiced good slavery). So you see as I stated, America didn’t invent slavery nor did they pioneer the horrible treatment of Africans….The world did that.

    @ _^_

Not really sure, but seem like your points align with mine in terms of the wars and American politics….again not sure, maybe if restated I could understand the difference.

But none the less, very good discourse here, cheers to both of you gents.

I concur “Instead of recognizing the complexities involved in such a matter, these critics want nothing more than to use any excuse to attack Obama and divide the country at a time when we need to be unified more than ever.” But that is secondary, isn’t it? Obama does not speak until he knows what he is talking about – that’s what he told a reporter and that’s what his actions prove. General McCrystal even said that the discussions with Obama have help him and given him insights.

Don’t forget Iran is next door. They are not conforming and they insist on testing missiles. When Israel takes action – America will be nearby and better able to assist.

    Wether the American-Wars in Iraq,Afghanistan,Yemen,Somalia,North-Korea,
    Pakistan,Vietnam,Cambodia South-America,Palestine And
All the Other Places The United States has Sent Its Military Killing Machine To Mercilessly Bomb and Kill Innocent Civilians,Women And Children And The Elderly,And Not Forgetting The Ethnic Cleansing Of The Native American Indians And Mexicans Etc,Inherited By President Obama Or Not Is Not Really The Point Mr.Al Sharpton. The American People should Not Be adviced By You To Simply Sit And Wait To See What The President Does Next But For All Americans To Voice Their Disapproval Of What The American Military,Who Are Controlled By The Neo-Cons,Who Controll The CIA,Pentagon,FBI,Blackwater And CIA Secret Mercenary Agents, Are Doing Around The Globe. To Be Quite Blunt Mr.Al Sharpton,The Whole World Is Tired And Fed-Up With American Military Adventures,Military Campaigns And Expeditions And The Interference,Destruction And Occuppation Of Other Peoples Lands And Its Bombing And Killing Of Innocent Civilians,Men,Women And Children. Why Do Americans Sit Quietly While Its Government Funds And Arms Israeli Jews To Bomb And Slaughter Innocent Men,Women And Children In Palestine. You Have Also Failed To Mention To The American People Why The American Military Have Yet Again Invaded The Poverty Stricken Island Of Haiti Which Has Just Suffered Its Worst Disaster In Its History.America Has Now Used This Opportunity To Send 7 Thousand Troops To Haiti And Preventing The International Humanitarian Aid And Assistance From Other Countries From Landing On The Island. What Is That? Look,America Plus Germany And Europe Are Quickly Arming Israel With Nuclear Sub-marines And Weapons Of Mass Destruction In An Area Of The Middle-East Which Is Already On Fire Which George W Bush The Younger Deliberately Started,And Now You Encourage Israel To Pour Petrol On This Fire.So My Question To The American People Is This:Are The American People Going To Sit Quietly And Watch A Few Neo-Cons Start A Third-World War? Starting A Third world-War In Order To Control The Worlds Natural Resources And Killing Billions Of People And Destroying The Whole World And Its environment Is Not A Good Idea. And That Brings Me Back To My Second Question which Is:Is It Now Too Late For The American People To Bring Back Its Attacking Military War Machine? What America Is Doing Today Is Nothing New.The Greeks Did It With Alexander The Great. The Romans Did It With Their Caesars And The British Did It With Their British Empire And Now America Is Trying To Repeat History. Its Quest For World Domination And Empire Building With Its Own Population In Dire Crisis Of Unemployments,Failing Banks And Institutions And Homelessness And Foreclosures Of Homes And Businesses And American Families Losing Their Loved Ones In Miliatary Campaigns Abroad.Millions Of Americans Voted For Obama For Change -But The World Is Caught-Up In The Old Battle Of Christianitys Crusade Against Islam Centered On The Holy Land In The Middle-East.But The Only Significant Difference In This Present Euro-American Christian Crusade For World Domination Is The Acquisition By The West Of Nuclear Weapons And Weapons Of Mass Destruction And Once You Push That Red-Button There Is No Turning Back The Clock And If American Dares Use This Option Again Then It Will Find Itself The Ultimate Target Of Other Countries Who Will Not Wait To Be Attacked Before Launching Their Own Nuclear Weapons On America Itself. This Is The Dooms Day Scenerio. All Living Things Will Be Wiped-Off The Surface Of The Earth And None Will Be Victorious. This Will Be End As We Know It.So Mr.Al Sharpton,Don’t Wait And See What Happens Next Because It Will Not Be Pleasant And This Is The Time,The Final Hour To Warn Americans Of The Dangers That Lies Ahead Behond The Horizon And Continuesly Arming A Dangerous And Inhuman Israeli Military Regime Who Already Posses Nuclear Weapons Is Just Damned Irresponsible And These So-Called Zionists And Neo-Cons Cannot Be Allowed To Bring The World To A Miserable End.

Most people voted for Obama because they thought that he was goijng to end the wars. Instead, he extended them to Pakistain now. It is stupid to say that Iran is right around the corner and that we will help Isreal. Isreal, remember when their ppl called Obama the N word. The Zionist could careless about the Americans, especially the African-Americans. Iranians are afraid that Obama will invade them and take their resources, as they have done in Iraq. The only reason why they want weapons is to protect themselves. This is the reason why I am against the war, it only breeds more wars and more violence.
Americans need to wake up and take care of their own people. As I visited North Carolina over the summer, I was stunned to see the homeless families in the streets. Plenty of people are now using food banks and job banks. I could see so much stress in their faces. I am tired of my tax paying dollars going towards these wars. I want to see my dollars at work in my own home, Not Isreal!!!!
